How I Got My Porsche Cayman 981 GT4

- I have family commitments coming up, meaning I won't be out and about in the Porsche Cayman 981 GT4 for several more days to come. Many of you were surprised with this purchase, not least of all myself. I wasn't looking for a 981 GT4 to purchase... this just happened before I could stop myself.

I'm the lucky chap who managed to buy Max's Cayman 987 and, after my first 3 weeks of ownership, I wanted to say what a fantastic car it really is! It's brilliant condition, handling and performance are a great testimony to the love, care and attention Max gave her. Whilst Max has gone on to be the proud owner of a 981 GT4 this was my first step in to the world of Porsche - it's very early days but I don't think that I'm going to be disappointed. The styling of the 987 has always caught my eye and I was keen to get a Gen 2 manual and so Max's car ticked all the boxes for me. I'm planning a trip down to the south coast soon which should give me the opportunity to more fully experience just how well she handles on different types of roads - can't wait!
Hi Guy! Great to hear she has gone to a good home. I've said this publicly elsewhere... there is no better value for money Cayman than the 987.2, preferably in S guise. Is my 981 GT4 more than 3x the fun, I don't think so, but it was a journey I had to make and I don't regret it.
Your car was also my first Porsche, and I couldn't have wished for a better experience. It was supposed to be my forever Porsche... hence all the money spent on getting it just right. Once again I'm glad you're enjoying the car, and you're lucky to have Michelin PS4S all around, as the Cup 2's can get dicey this time of year on my GT4. They will be swapped to PS4S when they wear out.
Who knows, maybe we can meet one day and feature your cracking Cayman on this channel with some fresh ownership perspectives!

The color is so sick the 981 gt4 is awesome and personally I totally prefer the twin pipes in the middle I think the dual pipes and the rear diffuser in the 718 gt4 and gts are a big let down look at the rear of the 911 gt3 looks very much like yours and like the cayman T rear anyway enjoy

Well presented and I had the same experience. Was looking to replace my car and was realistically looking at merc c class convertible or Audi A3 convertible and just came across the triple black 987 cayman for half my budget on a new car, thought the price was too good to be true and after a week still there and then just booked a viewing and after going 50 yards down the road, knew I had to buy it and the rationale part went out the window and emotions took control. Usually a recipe for disaster but in my case best decision ever and hope that works out for you. Look forward to seeing your car in real life one day

Congratulations! This somewhat happened to me back in February. I was thinking about moving my 718S Boxter in another year or so. I was passively wanting a GT4, but not aggressively pursuing. One day, my sales rep called and said they have a new GT4 and GTS in. Did a demo drive and bought it on the spot. Craziest purchase I have ever made, but I’m super happy!
I’m very happy for you, plus it’s super cool you got to own the car from NEW!! There’s no making up for that feeling and knowledge of where the car has been, and how it’s been treated.

Beautiful colour Max, Porsche seem to nail it on the vibrant colour front. I like you was very much colour focused when I was looking for my 987.1 Cayman S, and in the end it took me about 6 months to find the Artic Silver manual 6 speed that I now own. Watching your Pinky Lai interview confirmed to me that this was the best colour to show off the car’s lines. It will be interesting to see how the car copes with the likes of speed humps etc., one of the things that put me off a GT4 as a daily driver.

I have a 981 Cayman at the moment and I love it. I've owned performance Audi's/Mercedes and neither compare to my Cayman. I'll be aiming to get a 981 GTS/GT4 at some point in the future but for now I'm really happy with my 981 - I'm only 29 so still a long way off of affording either mind you!

Max, your enthusiasm was the reason I bought my 981. This car looks fantastic in this epic voodoo blue colour and its a manual. Well done and well deserved, if residuals hold out you'll barely lose any money.
Only downside is on British roads its largely 1st & 2nd gear fun, the rest is overdrive.
Hope you're enjoying the 981... from what little driving I have done so far, I'm not having any complaints on the gearing. I suspect it's more of an issue when you're giving it some and want to keep the revs high. I don't plan to track this car... I wonder if I will be that bothered with the gearing... I know most GT4 drivers keep banging on about the gearing... let's see how I get on with it as time goes on...

The long gearing is a thing in all Porsche's, even in my manual 2.7, when the cars singing I'm topping 70 in 2nd. Overall it would be much more involving if the gearing was a little shorter, and for me being involved is what Porsche's are all about. If tracking was the main reason for owning a GT4 then a PDK would be better, but on the roads manual is way best IMO.
Interested in your comments on the Emira, I've succumbed and stuck a deposit down but asking myself in reality is it really going to give me anything more that the 981 isn't.
PS; did you lose much on your 987? Betting you didn't.
Congrats! I have a very similar story in 2018. Long story short...was going to trade in my 2014 911 Turbo at my local dealer for either a new 2018 911 Carrera T or 718 Cayman GTS. They had a Carmine Red 2016 GT4

Gorgeous blue. Looking to get a 981 but can’t find any for sale in this colour
Voodoo Blue was paint to sample, and probably around an extra £7,000 at the time, so only a few would have specified it on a 981. Shark Blue on the 718 is the closest colour match.

I think the future values are debatable. It's all up in the air at the moment, excuse the pun.
If taxation on ICE cars is increased too much, values may drop, as everyone moves into EVs.
Maybe the synthetic fuel work Porsche is doing may secure a future for ICE sports cars?
I really don't know, everything seems to be up for grabs at the moment.
Anyway let's all enjoy ICE whilst we can.

I’m literally in the exact same position mate! 😂 had to sell my cars to refurbish the house and now I’m on the hunt for a GT4! I had a C63 and an M3 before but after test driving this, none of those even came close to the driving experience!
Any tips on finance? I’ve never actually financed a car before but with this I would definitely need to and it would be a new experience 👍🏼
No tips on finance from me… though you could try Oracle Car finance in the UK

Explaining for the wider community here... I'm not the type of person to constantly wish for something outside of my affordability range. That's not a recipe for a happy life. So I didn't keep hankering after a 981 GT4.
This car came up for sale out of the blue (literally), it triggered something deep in me, and the rest was history as they say.
speaking of your kids, which one will get your car when you leave this earth? My son is not into cars, if I had a cayman and died, he would just sell it.

Hahahaha, good point. I make Cayman content based on whoever contacts me. It just happens that more GT4 owners reached out to me recently, and Eddie as you know is always around with his Carmine Red 981 GT4. Never thought it would be a car I could/would own based on the price.
