  • The 981 Cayman GT4 versus 718 Cayman GT4. It seems like it's a never-ending debate about which car is the one you want to own.
    The 981 GT4 is the first Cayman GT4 and is seen as more analog, raw and less refined.
    The 718 GT4 is the second - and last - generation of the Cayman GT4 and is seen as the more advanced, powerful and desirable of the GT4's.
    Thanks to this video, any potential GT4 owner will not have to rely on professional car reviewer's opinions or the buzz on the forums. Finally, here's a video that's all about giving you the answer to the question of 981 Cayman GT4 or 718 Cayman GT4.

    Udo gets it. He’s a real one. Great perspective about ownership. There’s always something newer or “better,” and being satisfied with a great car and saying this is “enough” and enjoying it for what it is can be difficult but is ultimately the key to happiness. At least until you’re onto the next experience. PS Will, you weren’t kidding, you squirm like crazy as a passenger 😂

    I have zero interest in either car, and this, in my opinion, has been your best content yet. Udo gets it..... "the more experiences you can have, whether it's in 1 car or 10 different cars, it doesn't matter" Both yall have different tastes, and some of the same. Some people like to drive them. Some people like to buy them and shine them. Every owner's experience is different. To each their own in every facet of Porsche ownership. That is true Porsche experience in a nutshell. Fantastic video!

    This has been a fantastic video. I'm in the middle of trying to decide between the 981 and 982, labouring over the seat issue and the noise comparisons (probably the two most topical issues whenever someone is trying to choose between these two). In the end both cars have their own character and individuality. I'm still torn but it's great to know other people suffer from this as well. Cheers

    This has to be one of the most thorough yet enjoyable GT4 generation comparison videos out there. I can't believe I sat through a 30min+ youtube video! I credit that to how both your passions for Porsches makes it easy to express how you feel about the cars. I particular liked the part of the vid where both of you reluctantly appreciate the auto-rev match 🤣. I'd love to see more of these comparison videos!

    Great video on not only the comparison of the 981 vs 982 GT4, but why these platforms fit in the ownership spectrum. I currently own a 982 GT4 from new but have owned many others and all have their place whether they are 30 years old or 1 year old. As for the debate about buckets vs sofas - I have the buckets and they work for how I use the car, but if I were to drive it as a daily I would not want them. Just my own personal experience and I’m athletic and ride bikes like your buddy in the video. But if you are driving it for fun and have something else as a daily then they are great.
    Thanks for continuing to put out the great content.

    Both are great cars. IMO the buckets complete the GT experience. I wouldn’t own one without them. IMO the 982 isn’t worth the 20k+ premium. Super happy with my 981 GT4. The 981 to me will be more special being the first and with limited production.

    This video has been a game changer for me. In the coming months I’m going to have some money to buy a dream car and the GT4 is top of the list. I don’t earn a lot and don’t have a lot of money so £50,000-£70,000 in the UK is a HUGE amount to me. I didn’t want to get the 981 and be thinking “what if”. I want the 18 way sports seats and steel brakes as well. As a cyclist who’s now 48 and had spinal fusion comfort has to be a thing.
    After seeing this I know I can save some money and still be happy. A 981 GT4 without buckets and ceramics. I’ll be looking at sub £60,000 ($76,800), there’s one on at the moment in white, from a very reputable seller at what would be $69,000. This would leave money in the bank so I don’t have to worry about fuel, servicing and repairs.
    Thank you both! You’ve answered a question I’m sure many will ask over the years.

    I loved this video. I have a 718 GT4 with the buckets and I think there are pluses and minuses for each generation and the various options. I felt like I was in the car and loved the conversation. By the way, my understanding is that the 3.8 can be upgraded such that the HP and torque is very similar to the 4.0. The 3.8 is a great engine. P1 Design inserts are top notch and I plan to get some as well. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

    • @chrisr5084
      @chrisr5084 2 місяці тому

      I would say its a bit more than that. The 4.0 has a tuned intake with multiple resonance points. It was certainly derived from the 3.0T but its a thoroughly tuned engine. I believe it's only real drawback is noise and environmental regulations which have affected the exhaust design. Install a good exhaust such as Kline and you're good to go.

    I had sofas in my GT4 and opted for the buckets in my GT4RS. I thought I made a mistake on the spec when I first got the 4RS, the buckets were absolutely brutal. $2500 later, after custom P1 inserts and the dealer installed reclining risers, the buckets are now 80% as comfortable as the sofas. They look cool, help with resale, but depending on body type they could not be for you. I’m 6’, lean, athletic FYI.

    Great video my Man Udo and Will. Porsche is one of the few companies that can keep the modern cars still feeling visceral as the classics with the option to stay manual! I noticed it was interesting that it one may not feel the speed you are traveling as much because they are so well engineerred and catches you by suprise. In addition may need a track to get that vibe you can get at lower speeds on public roads with the air cooled cars. I like the idea that the GT4 can do both track and street well. Heck just do what you feel like doing with it (within reason on public roads LOL). There is no right or wrong. Would like to hear your thoughs guys about visibilty and seating position 911 vs cayman body and how that comes in to play. Very tempting to come to the dark side (lots of Vader references Udo). Looks like Udo and Will may already be there.:) May the Fuchs be with you.

That car is just so usable power-wise and tossable, plus the engine sounds way better than the 718 GT4 (w/ OPF's). I didn't get one and went 911, but maybe someday.

  • @warrenlucier5796
    @warrenlucier5796 7 місяців тому

    I think both of these (981 & 982) are great examples of the Cayman platform and would like to have the displacement bump in the 2010 987.2 Cayman S I have. I don't know if the changes made to the rear suspension are transferable to the 987 gen car or not, maybe or maybe not. The 981 GT4 got the 911 S 3.8 and not the 911 GTS 3.8 with 408 HP and the 982 got the 9A2 911 3.0 with larger cylinder bores and the 3.6 (9A1) crankshaft 81.5 mm. In the 997.2 gen 911 there was a 3.6 with the same bore and cases as the 3.4, but had the aforementioned crankshaft. To get the 4.0 from a 3.8 (9A1) you require the 3.6 crankshaft and a piston set with the wristpin height revised to have the pistons @ deck. There are 2 options for those who want to spend the funds required to change the gearing in the transaxle. Option # 1 is those offered by GT Gears, input and output gear sets and option # 2 is offered in the UK with a different ring and pinion set vs gear sets. I'm personally good with the current setup, but if I wasn't I pursue door # 2. The low end pull is due to the crankshaft and probably the camshafts too, but I don't know the specs on those.

    What are your thoughts on Singer and other Porsche coachbuilders? Is this a taboo topic or simply spoken in "hushed tones" due to the astronomical prices they garner?

    If you drive a car that revs to 6,000 rpm and 2nd gear will get you 60 mph at that 6 grand limit people will not say the gear is too tall.
    If you have the exact same gear ratio but your engine will turn 8,000 rpm
    2nd gear will still do 60mph at 6g and 80mph at 8 thousand rpm, its the same gear with more rpm but people will cry "it has tall gears". Nobody ever explains this and it leads to a false perception of Porsche having bad gearing.

I’ve had a 981 gt4 and I found that 6 months it it was super boring on the street. Gears too tall. Only fun at the limit, which you can’t approach on the street. For reference my Cayman GTS 4.0 is my first Porsche and have never experience the older. I do admit I am the clean and shine love to look and admire in the garage at the moment. Good to hear both perspectives on each car. Thanks for sharing. Also, I found this video to be interesting a while back when I was brushing up on the GT4. ua-cam.com/video/5zUJae9DSCQ/v-deo.html
    Also, the ability to really enjoy the GT4 on the street varies by region. The Savagegeese are in the Chicagoland area and there's simply no point in having such a car relegated to a densely populated road system.

    I don’t agree with the opinion that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
    I ride a KTM 1290R Gen 3 it’s fun at slow speeds too, far more reliable in “moments” because it’s as instant acceleration to get out of harms way as opposed to being a sitting duck on a low powered bike where braking is your only option. PS I ride in Bali Indonesia on a 110cc scooter and in Tokyo on a 250 Kawasaki Ninja(they’re fun but I miss my 1290R when I am).
    For me I hate having to take a run up and long slow acceleration to overtake poor drivers - it’s a far to long exposure to increased risk IMO
    I would never hear the end of it from my wife if there were carbon buckets in our daily driver.

    I don't have one but if my significant other had a problem with buckets I'd get the other seats.
    But after watching this and struggling on which seats in a Cayman GTS or Carrera T I may just go with the 18 way as a daily I'd get heated and cooled seats.

    I have a 981s and a 993 and I'm thinking about a 991 or 992 to replace the 981s.

      After publishing almost 200 videos about Porsche ownership, not to mention having owned 12 or so of them, I disagree with you about whether or not I classify as an “enthusiast.” I’m a driver, a collector, a caretaker and am engaged member of the Porsche community.
      I have put thousands of hours into this channel…and make very little money out of it. I do it because I love the cars.
      Whether or not you like my style is another story…my personality, delivery, etc. isn’t for everyone, which is fine…but I can assure you that I wouldn’t do this (including putting up with criticism from randoms such as yourself) if I didn’t love the brand. 😄
      With all of that said, thanks for watching as much as you did. Maybe go check out The Smoking Tire or Jay Emm? They are great channels and maybe more to your liking 👍🏼

      I don’t think I would be so quick to jump to that conclusion 😄

    • @Nord_Mann
      @Nord_Mann Рік тому +1

      @@Rennthusiast it’s not a hasted conclusion. I’ve owned 14-15 different P-cars over the last 9yrs and driven pretty much everything Porsche has pumped out since the 930, except for the new 992GT3RS. I still own my first Porsche, a -90 C4, which I’ve had outlawed inspired by Frank Cassidy’s Black Betty and did 12 full track days in it just last year. So the knowledge and history is there.
      As for GT4 I’d choose a 981GT4 over a 718GT4 if manual, as I really didn’t like the drone at certain rpm and hated the gearbox in the 718manual making it a 1 spd gearbox with 5 overdrive gears if you were to avoid jail time reaching redline in any gear above 1st.
      991 was the last interesting 911 for me as the look, size and quality of the 992 is just putting me off.
      The 992GT3 is so clinically capable with it’s RAS, wide rubber and trick suspension that it is definitely demanding illegal speeds to be interesting to drive on roads. The 992 GT3RS will just exaggerate these attributes to a stratospheric level and render it just silly to pilot around on roads, and let’s face it, most of us haven’t the cash to keep tracking a 992GT3RS every second weekend through the year with all costs accrued in doing so.
      Then enter the 718 GT4RS which has Porsches best motor stuffed in the back, the loudest cabin in any modern Porsche, the shortest gearing in any Porsche road car, and the best part of it, it’s not just another 911. Outside of petrol heads, nobody sees a difference from 996s to 992s. When the 992 came out in 2019 and I got to drive it in C2S/C4S guise, I felt no urge to trade my then 991 Carrera T in for one of them. 992 was a big disappointment to me. Same was the 718GT4 and the 981GT4 got away from me at the time they were new and I wasn’t really ready to give up on the 911 platform at that time.
      After having owned the GT4RS for 8 months now, and finally after winter got to track it proper in April, I can say there’s just no sports car out there delivering the same outright fun and hooliganism as the GT4RS does. You just can’t buy another car built in more than seriously limited 2-digit numbers from any manufacturer giving more laughter and joy.
      Both of you have got to go try the GT4RS. It’s the benchmark of petrol hedonism. Nothing will become the same again. And don’t ever think the UA-cam videos does the IRL in cabin experience justice.
      The GT4RS is simply the GOAT Porsche not looking at lap times but joy behind the wheel. Have fun!

Of the 981/718GT4 in manual I’d choose the 981, as long as it has digital radio as my country, believe it or not, has made the wise decision to shut down the FM waves. That’s on par with the wise decision putting road blocks closing off fully functional roads.
