Came here from Phoenix Az - love the meadow branch neighborhood- walkable to downtown- green loop trail - so many independent restaurants- everything five minutes away if you live in 22601. We have lived in Sterling, Reston and Centerville - cannot beat Winchester for money, walking and quality of life.

It’s frustrating to see what’s happening to Winchester. Since 2021, city folk have been moving into our small town, drawn by the promise of a quieter, more affordable, and slower pace of life. At least, that’s how it started. But it didn’t take long for big developers to swoop in, buying up huge swaths of land to build cookie-cutter, cheaply constructed homes. These housing developments look like any other planned community in the country-soulless and devoid of character. They don’t reflect the unique history or charm of Winchester, Virginia, or the Shenandoah Valley-not even in the street names.
Before long, the newcomers started complaining. They wanted the same big-city amenities they had supposedly moved here to escape. Now, our roads are clogged with commuters, but the infrastructure hasn’t been updated to handle the traffic. Schools are overcrowded, grocery store shelves are picked clean, and what was once an affordable, historically rich town is quickly losing its identity. Winchester, known for its ties to country music legends, Civil War history, and the Apple Blossom Festival, is becoming just another generic pit stop off the freeway-filled with oversized gas stations, corporate-owned fast food chains, and rising taxes.
The unique spirit of this town is disappearing, replaced by the monotony of "Anywhere, USA." I’m already counting down the days until I can leave this so-called big city and find a quieter place. Somewhere with a tight-knit community, far from the hustle and bustle. Of course, I wouldn’t mind a Whole Foods, maybe a Starbucks or a Chick-fil-A. I can't live in those old outdated houses either. The cost to fix wouldn't be worth it. Hopefully someone can build a few new houses with my neighbors very close to me. Like those homes I saw Near D.C.

Winchester is full of old people and children. Not meant for regular young adults. Better off renting in the real DMV or CA or NJ or NY or Maryland or Houston.

In 2014 we retired and moved from Ashburn in Loudoun County to just outside of Winchester about 10 minutes in Frederick County. We live in a fairly new subdivision which started at around $400k for a 2400 sqft house with an unfinished basement on ~.25 acre. I have and still am watching the builder putting up homes that are $700k and up and I have yet to see a country inspector. Our home which was built in 2012 had several blatant out of code issues which we had to get fixed and we had to replace a sewer connection lateral to the main. Over the last ten years we have put ~$30k correcting the original building problems. Water is very expensive here much more than Loudoun and as more people attach hopefully it goes down but I am not holding my breath. Healthcare here is horrible and many of us go to NOVA for anything serious which is about one hour and a half depending on traffic. Since there are not many good physicians they think they have a captive customer and poor quality of service is routine. Traffic is getting worse since this area is growing so fast but not yet as bad a NOVA. Winchester City proper is more expensive to live with higher taxes and mostly Democratic Party whereas Frederick County is Republican. Shopping in town isn't too bad but there is no Wegman's or anything close to it. Property taxes for personal property is very high and if you have or buy a new car it will shock you. The country is rapidly getting to be another Washington suburb like Loudoun. Overall, we like it here but it is not a great as we thought it would be since the reviews I read were very positive and good healthcare which is why I decided to fill in some blanks that folks like this realtor doesn't mention. Downtown Winchester is a tourist trap IMHO and it loses its sparkle after a few visits especially during Apple Blossom week. We stay away when that madness is going on. No place is perfect but since we are 75 years old I sometimes wish we had stayed in the Ashburn area for much much better doctors and healthcare. The Valley Health hospital here is a joke and all they care about is bottom line for profit. They don't treat or pay their folks fairly and moral there is in the toilet. I spent one day in the emergency room and it was way understaffed and fortunately my chest pain was just heartburn. You cannot really go to far out because you will not have good internet or natural gas. IMHO.

Sorry for your bad experience but have to disagree- my multiple experiences with Valley Health have been outstanding. I can’t speak for a new build but get a 20/30 year old home in 22601 and you are set.

@@kerryanne You are an exception and good for you. If you read any of the health site reviews about Valley Health they are not good. I have managed to find a few good doctors here after much trial and error. I have talked to folks who lived here back in the 1990s and they said it was a different group in charge of the health care. When Valley Health took over they only care about profit and many of the good doctors left. I have a heart valve replacement coming up and I will be going to UVA Charlottesville. I have told my Wife if anything serious happens to me just let them stabilize me here if needed but then medivac me to Fairfax Inova or UVA depending on the issue. Do your own research and see for yourself.
