I'm a large jazz fan and really loved Mood Valiant, but this album seriously disappointed me - in the exact same way as the top comment here. Teaser songs were good, doesn't feel like this album comes together cohesively.
Exactly. I just ended up over listening to the newest ones and yeah just hard to really “feel” the album but yeah still great songs need some time to miss them I guess
Don't you see that HK is just a proof of divine intervention? Every member is so unique, skillful and perfectly fit. Its a dream team: their sound is legendary, their lyrics is transformative, and they are paving the way of love in the dark jungle of ignorance we live in.
I might have missed it but did you discuss “long cat?” It is the silliest song and my surprise favorite. It reminds me of the songs you create for your pets that are personal, unique, and often only sung in solitude. SO SILLY AND CUTE
Hiatus Kaiyote are one of my fave bands! I've loved them ever since I first Nakamarra on a college radio station so many years ago. Love Heart Cheat Code the song is honest to gosh one fo the catchiest things I've heard in some time. The band has always had this vibe of like what a funky jazz band from the future might sound like, and LHCC really exemplifies this mood for me. Anyways, keep it up, handsome. Been watching your channel for years and this might actually be the first comment I've ever left on it. Sorry, I know that probably makes me a bad fan by the standards of UA-cam and the relative business of what makes for a viable channel, but as a fellow Elder Millenial and lover of music, I salute you and the work you do. Even when your takes are extra spicy, you're still serving up mad promotion for a lot of music from across a wide spectrum of sounds and styles and artists, and for that I love and respect what you do. Also, Longcat SOTY, no contest
The LHCC album didn’t hit as much until I saw their live concert. Once I saw them play live, I went back to the album and have been obsessed. It’s definitely an album you have to listen over and over to appreciate its work.
You have every right to be proud! Your country makes some of the best music in the whole world! As an American, I have a lot of respect for Australian musicians and artists!
This is honestly album of the year for me. I still think Choose Your Weapon is their best work since Tawk Tomahawk and Mood Valiant didn't do much for me but Love Heart Cheat Code is just a joy to listen to from start to finish, especially since I didn't listen to the singles beforehand so the whole thing felt fresh from start to finish.
sometimes i click on a fantano video just because the album cover looks cool as fuck and i'm put on to something i would have never discovered otherwise thanks melon
@gusstabithc he had a weird bee in his bonnet about it from the getgo; he started by calling it 2nd rate flying lotus worship before absolutely dismissing Nai Palm's vocal skills. The worst part was he basically said "if you strip away everything that makes this sound unique, you have something less inventive underneath", which objectively proves that the review and viewpoint was rigged from the start, because of course if you strip away uniqueness, it stops being unique! It was such a weird thing to say and whenever he brings up the backlash now, he forgets that he said those things and tries to retcon the criticism, stating that it was just about production values etc, when clearly he was in a strange headspace that day and had no intention of giving it a fair review. Was a big stinker alright
I feel like this album is missing some of the big swings the band would take in their earlier work. Melon says they've gotten more coherent but to me it's just safer and this is arguably their safest most homogenous album yet.
im a biiiig fan of HK admittedly, but i do kind of agree with you. with this album and with mood valiant, they release the best songs as singles way ahead of their album release, then the album comes out and the songs i havent heard are mostly filler. Love their funk sound but yeah, i wish there were maybe 2-3 more songs like Cinnamon Temple on this record. And "All the words that we dont say" from Mood Valiant, i really really appreciate when they bring all their technical skill and sound into something completely energetic. when u see they can go that hard, everything else feels like theyre not giving it their all. regardless, big fan of them and always love seeing them live
I just saw them last week in DC and they were absolutely stellar. As someone who has just heard their songs in passing growing up, it was a great show. Crowd was also very good 💗
You know what I’ve always thought though in every review you’ve done? How some songs you might hate for album cohesion or underwhelming vibes or not pretty and maybe too intense etc… how some of these songs may be more for the live experience. I would like to hear reviews of live performances from you lmao
I love Hiatus Kaiyote but I feel like they kind of spoil the anticipation and end up with something that might've come off as a bit underwhelming to the group's standard. I'm more charitable for the final record, but I honestly feel the materials in this album could've benefited even more from extended individual duration and just a bit of add. songs. You know, make it into a full-scope record like CYW. Plenty of interesting ideas that feel cut short by the intent to make a more pop-ish record in terms of listening duration. Overall, I think it's a plain 8.0 album for me, or "a strong 7 to light 8" score (visually coded to "light 8") if goes by Fantano scoring metric.
This album has somewhat lifted me from my depressive episode the same way Deerhoof’s “Actually, You Can,” did years back. I will see them in concert so I may support them for this blessing!
What I like about Fantano, it's it's clear that HKs brand of neo soul is not really his bag, but he recognises their undoubted quality. I love them and would say this is a strong 8 would be a 9 but as he says a few slightly underwhelming tracks
I've listened to the record about 6 times so far and on first listen, I'd probably have given it a 5, now I'm at an 8. I thought Mood Valiant was a bit loose groove-wise (understandable for 2021/pandemic era but still), and this really feels like the band is back in their pocket but with a new set of colors. I loved How to Meet Yourself, because meandering, sentimental, and lush is something HK does really well, it's the jazz in them. I thought the overall arc of the album was unexpected, and I'm not sure yet if that's good or bad. Cinnamon Temple and White Rabbit are really fun songs, but I wouldn't place them at the end of a record like this. They're memorable and interesting, but I don't think they work as a conclusion for the album.
Pls listen to kosmonauci „sorry nie tu” its one of the best albums of the year in my opinion but because of origin country and genre this album is very little known to people. You won’t regret it.

I was hoping you could review the upcoming dr. Dog album. The singles have been really great and it’s looking to be great release with a very pure sound. It comes out July 19.
I absolutely loved lhcc but mood valiant will always kinda be my number one from that band. there are always certain songs from each of their albums that I come back to and mood valient has the most of those but yeah for me this project is about an 8.7/8.8 some of the tracks are a little to “noisy” for me and im much more a fan of the soft synths and dense harmonies so yeah great album overall
actually, this was a great score. it was not an spectacular album but it does resonate with you, and it's special because of it. All of them are really good musicians and artists too, their music will always deserve to be listened because it's magical.
