- In this episode, I am exploring the area around Koidu, Sierra Leone's diamond capital. Everything revolves around diamonds here, and almost all inhabitants are working in the diamond mining or trade. Its very hard work for very little money. By far the majority of the people are using hand tools to dig up the diamonds, except for a few large corporations that use heavy machinery.

I was in a community college back in 1989, and in my history class was a boy from Sierra Leone. His whole village had pooled money to send him to our little college so he could get a degree in teaching to come back and be a teacher in his own village. He was living with a pastor of a local Seventh Day Adventist church, and he and I got put together for a project. I learned so much! Sadly he didn't get to finish his 4 year degree, his parents passed away and he had to go back home to care for his siblings. I often wondered what became of him.

It is what it is. The obese kitties are a necessary part of any trade. You are willingly typing your comment on a Chinese made device marketed by an American obese kittie company and can't for the life of you see the relationship to your comment.
Not just corruption by the few my friend but the exploitation of Africa and its people by large western corporations. Coupled with this Africa's immense wealth is also shared between the elites who govern and close circles of family and friends.
Some are platin slaves, some are gold or silver slaves and some are just plain slaves in this world and then there are those who are chosen to run it all.
1000 carat diamond and the country is famous for the corruption and poverty. Corruption is the true Cancer of the world.
Blood diamonds was made famous by a Leonardo DiCaprio movie. The reality of corruption goes far beyond humanity where only a few stand at the top. Sierra Leone have two types of population. The ones that have, and the ones that they don’t have. Thank you Noraly for sharing this brave video.

For some reason, I had expected a much more advanced development. There were no beautiful buildings nor expensive homes, at least not what we were shown. And the undeveloped roads...not what I had expected at all from an area where so much of the world's wealth is centered...

It was the same in America before there was social media! I live in a city called Port royal, South Carolina. Back in the day, all of the rich people all over the world, had a little 5 to 11 year olds shucking their oysters for them, they were sent. This picture of the little children of Irish heritage no doubt? Definitely looked like it! We’re standing in the freezing cold water in boots of leather all tore up in mud. Their little fingers/hands disfigured from oyster knives. The exceptionally wealthy have done this forever. It’s just after around the late 40s word-of-mouth was traveling too fast for them to keep up with these escapades in America.
The sad truth is that it´s often the western world that has fuel these tragic events..... One man's loss is another man's gain.... What (mostly) the western world has done to Africa is beyond sad. Slaves, diamonds etc..... But things are going in a better direction now. Africa has started to negotiate lots of stuff when it comes to trading etc as a whole continent now instead of as separate small countries. They have realised that Africa must save Africa. The western world that has ripped them of freedom, money, minerals etc for hundreds of years won´t never help Africa. They rather trade with China and other countries that actually help them and pay for stuff. So hopefully things will be better from rather recently.....

In 1967, a friend of mine served in Koidu as a Peace Corps Volunteer. His task was introducing new rice varieties and fertilizers to the area. He was personally devastated when people dug up his demonstration plots in search of diamonds. Those roads have not changed one bit in the last 55 years. Noraly is one helluva cyclist.

I was born and raised in Sierra Leone (Lebanese), and I have witnessed the bloody war in 1991 which was terrifying. I still remember the sound of the gun shots and God saved my life at one point where was running for my life an RPG rocket was aimed at my escape root where I flew up almost two meters from the ground by the impact of the explosion and fell down to the ground, thanks to God the wall barrier was between me and the rocket grenade it was a nightmare. Watching this video brough me back good and bad memories. I wish Sierra Leone and Sierra Leoneans the best that life can offer and most importantly peace within the beautiful people of Sierra Leone. You wouldn't be as wealthy as you probably are (compared to global standards) if it wasn't for the exploitation of those people. Our wealth is only possible with their poverty. I used to hate it but now I actually like it since I don't want to be poor either.
It's just sad all around the world 3rd world countries with so many rich resources, but the GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION is so oppressive for the people that the poverty level is sooo bad and make this oppressors feel like Gods!👹👺
When i lived in Ivory Coast I loved it, to go at the edge of the rain forest in the evenng to watch the sounds, seeing birds and bats flying. It was so wonderful!

This episode had brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me of a documentary film I watched before, where people are used as slaves to mine diamonds, amd if I can remember it right, also the film of Leonardo de Caprio's Blood Diamond... The irony of diamond as jewelry but not knowing how it came to be... Luckily, I don't consider diamond as girls best friend and I am not jewelry wearer. No jewelry, no make up for me. I am happy without them.

I could feel the sadness as you rode through the mining area. Too many people died for diamonds, not that's just so sad and even now they are still working hard to have money to live on. I was in Sierra Leone 1973/4 (2 holidays) we stayed on Lumley Beach Freetown.Met a Lebanese guy who was nice to us but did try to sell us diamonds.The hotel manager told us that he would sell the Diamonds to us then inform the customs at the airport that we had them,they would find them and take everything of value from us and return the diamo ds to him to sell again.

This adventure in Sierra Leone has just reminded me of a book I once read called 'A Long Way Gone' by a former child soldier Ishmael Beah who found himself forced into the thick of that bloody civil war. Ooh reading that book makes you shed lots of tears 😭😭

Speaking of corruption, we just found out here in America that the justices in the highest court in the land were taking free vacation trips on super yachts to Africa and Caribbean countries from people who had cases before the court. But it feels so good to talk about corruption in small West African countries.

Forget what you read online, Sierra Leone is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, more peaceful than the United States and the people are among the friendliest people in the world. We have some of the best beaches in the world. Come and discover for yourself.
There was a history in sierra leone before the civil was broke and it was not bc of diamonds, it was because of the war in liberia spilled over to sierra leone, mining distrikt it became about war because ppl saw a way of extracting it free of charge, and its not the locals faults its greedy europeans who made it worst

Just a fantastic episode. There’s a different kind of vibe or intimacy when the route gets tight and challenging in spots and you’re moving and interacting with locals in their day to day. Just love it.
This was one of the most depressing episodes due to the pervasive feelings of desperation. The evironment is blessed with immense wealth, yet the people live in relative poverty and seldom have electricity. I had no idea that Sierra Leone was a center for diamond production.
Any African country that has or has had civil war has natural resources. Remember Africans hardly wear jewellery so external forces and money are the motivation.

Sadly It's frequent throughout many African countries, in Nigeria I would see big, western-run oil rigs, and only a hundred metres away, a village of mud huts & thatched roofs with no clean water.
Its worse when you know Sierra Leoneans who were dispaced in the Charles Taylor-Liberia era, later killed either by war, mutilated or survived only to be killed by HIV/Aids or Ebola. THe Sierra Leone episodes are a rollercoaster of emotions for me since I was there in '91-92. Missionary, not mercenary...

I remember when I was sent away to school, I couldn't sleep. My mom made a recording for me of the bush sounds at night. I slept like a baby after that. I miss hearing the sounds of the bush in Sierra Leone.
