Over 40 years ago I had the pleasure to sit down and talk with Miss Bailey after a dinner speech she gave to us at the Las Vegas Hilton. My girlfriend's father was the guest of honor and I had the opportunity to speak with her after her speech. We sat and talked for over 30 minutes, everyone else left the room. We spoke of the old family core values, just as she speaks in her interview here. I was a young man of 26 and she respected my youth and values taught by my parents of the Great Depression, Appalachian Generation (KY hollers). She mailed an autographed picture and a copy of her book "Hurry up America and Spit". Very lovely woman, kind and considerate. Later that week I did spend time have another dinner with Dick/Pat Van Patten and Lyle , wife, but nothing compared to the Pearl Bailey conversation.
No communication, no authority, no obedience, no compromise, no family ....so true, even more so now in 2021. "You must stand like an Oak and bend like a Willow".....such wise words. I miss the older generation of people from way back.
Pearlie Mae was an ambassador for all of human kind. The idea that she is forgotten today is a loss for all of us. Listen to her words and the love and hope in them and you will see the truth.
May Mrs. Bailey continue to rest in peace 🤍🙏🏿 I love that she was always learning and reinventing herself. She was beaufiul. Continued prayers to her family
Loved Miss Bailey! When I was 14 years old my grandfather took the family to see Pearl Bailey in Hello Dolly. That was in May 1968. That was my first Bway show and the beginning of a life long passion.
Amazing! A friend of my mother's, more like an older aunt to her really, was in the chorus of that very show. Last year, I helped her sort through her things, and I found a signed picture of Ms. Pearl Bailey from the show--and she let me have it. It's now one of my most prized possessions! Wish I coulda been there in '68 to see!
@@mishlake1 In 1975 Pearl Bailey was passing out autographed photos of herself on the 5th. floor at Saks Fifth Avenue. I was staff & didn't think of asking her for one. I can still see her & hear her from that time. Such personality, ETC.
What a extraordinary woman, she is a legendary icon. It makes me sad she died later that year on August 17, 1990 of Atherosclerotic coronary artery disease at age 72. She was so amazing and full of wisdom. RIP Miss Pearl Mae Bailey🌹🌟👠👡💐 (1918-1990)💐🌹
I loved her when I was a kid. Listening to this interview, I now know WHY I loved Ms. Bailey--I caught her beauty and her inner spirit. Both spoke volumes to me--even as a little child.
Pearl was an upbeat very great actress, singer and comedienne that excluded love for everyone. A great little book on her life is The Raw Pearl. She had many obstacles in her life but managed to overcome them and remain positive throughout her life. Greatly missed.
So sad, he lost his love . She was so optimistic. I wonder was her knee operation had anything to do with it.. was she doing it and passed from complications??? I am so mad at that... She needed to go on... Sad
I miss this. And I was born this year. But I do. Dick Cavett ALWAYS struck me as the most respectful interviewer of this century. He had a way of speaking with people that made them open up about the most personal of things. Even Edward Murrow on Person2Person didn’t have that kind of connection....
Preach Ms. Bailey. Wow she had so much wisdom I've always liked her read her Autobio and cook book. She w as s full of wisdom and it is true of children today not having breakfast or dinner at the table with their parent it's other distractions, cell phine, video games. God Bless Ms Bailey and her husband Mr Louis Bellson they made a great couple it was beyond black and white it was mutual understanding, musically, professional and just love.
Wow. Pearl Bailey talking about treating people nicely. Well...Diahann Carroll said she wasn't so nice to her. And...Maya Angelou's son said Pearl Bailey wasn't so nice to his mom. Interestingly
Love Pearl Bailey amazing woman American treasure.💜inspertional.For all people. Will for ever be miss .Much love always. You earn heavenly wings .Rest in Jesus.
That marriage advice she gave is a GEM! It would be even easier to apply today in this Information Age. You wouldn't even need to take a class in a building! You could both take a separate class online and share that experience with each other every night just to have something to talk about! That was rich what she said! I'll be using that one if I ever decide to stop being single. 😉
PEARL BAILEY was a talented singer and actress but she talked too much on her ABC show "THE PEARL BAILEY SHOW" and got it cancelled ... she needed to be controlled and was not near the end. Her solo performance on "THE BOSTON POPS" was perfect ... no talking.
I knew her when I was a kid, long story. She sent me books, including a children's story called "Dewey's Tale" and her autobiographical stuff, but NOT "Raw Pearl" or the cookbook she wrote. She really was an egomaniac, but a character, and I didn't understand what she was going on about at the time, the politics, religion etc. What I know now is that she's not given tribute whenever black entertainment history is being chronicled because she was a staunch Republican, so she gets buried.
@@divingduck1970 I'm sure being married interracialy angered those same folks. I think she is a hero, and wish I found out about her while she was alive. I find her most Fascinating and modern
No! She was born in Newport News Va. ( Sebrill/Courtland) Pearl Bailey is my Mother's Cousin. I never met Pearl Bailey Herself but I did meet Her Sister Virgie @ Davis Family Reunion in Virginia when I was about 9 or 10. Virgie was very close with my Mother's Sisters in Virginia.
Hard to believe she was gone later that year, so vibrant and full of life here.
I'm thinking the same thing. She is so full of life here. She was an amazing woman!
@Isaiah King Heart Attack
@Isaiah King after a knee surgery she had blood clots and yes cardiac arrest ❤️
Jawara k. Adams Trumpet same shit that happened to Dorothy Dandridge
How many months after this interview?
Pearlie Mae Bailey left so many pearls of wisdom that are still relevant in 2022 and beyond. God rest her soul!

Pearl Bailey has been one of my favorite people since Carmen Jones. I'm going back to school in my mid 30's. Her words have made me feel better.

Yes! Was very hopeful and optimistic even still.
This is a BEAUTIFUL tribute on what would have been Pearl's 100th birthday, 3/29/2018.
Man Pearl’s skin was made of black diamond I swear it STILL looks amazing! She looks amazing
Absolutely
Mrs. Bailey was beautiful throughout her life
WONDERFUL WISDOM...loved her!!! She said, Get broke or Get sick...see who your real friends are....so true! Love and respect for Miss Pearl Bailey!

We need a Miss Pearl Bailey movie. She is just really awesome my friend.Miss Queen Latifah would be the right person to play her man
God bless her.
I spent Saturday with Pearl's autobiography and there is a movie in there you would need a young Pearl but Queen Latina is her mature self! DO IT!
I adore her!
She had a baby marriage, an abusive marriage and then an extremely fine marriage to drummer Louis Nelson! And that was well before 1968!
Say send Latifah a copy of The Raw Pearl
I’m not trying to hear nobody else portraying Ms. Bailey in a biopic but Queen Latifah. Their resemblance and demeanor are uncanny.
Been saying this for years.
Facts!!!!
Yes !!! Queen Latifah look just her
Or Megan The Stallion too
So true!

“It ain’t how good you are but how long you last “
I love her and sadden that she died not too long after this interview. Forever love for Pearl Bailey.

I enjoy this interview so much RIP Ma Pearl Bailey ❤️❤️❤️
I hold fast that “Too Marvelous For Words” is written about Pearl Bailey....she was a grand lady ❤️❤️❤️
So much life and energy Pearl Bailey had before she passes later that same year of arteriosclerosis Harding of the arteries.RIP Pearly May.
She was one of the inspirations for me to go to college when I did. Very inspirational.
We lose our legends so quickly. smh rip queen

Javi, its crazy to believe she passed 11 months after this. She is so lovely. Qué Triste !

I loved her in Fox in the Hound
Omg yah I just realized she was the voice in that movie. Oh my goodness. Such beautiful lady ❤️
Pearl Bailey is proof that legends never die. Her spirit lives on...Death always knew he couldn't really stop her.
So sad. This interview was recorded on July 4, 1990 and she died on August 17, 1990.

What a Wonderful interview, what a Wonderful Woman/ Lady Pearl Bailey was, very smart , wise and entertaining.:-)
CLASSIC!!!
thank you for this video
I would like to see Queen Latifah play her life. She looks just like her.
An amazing talent and lady!!
It is so apparent that Dick Cavitt really admired Ms. Bailey so much.
She was just priceless!!
We all can learn from her! I can see her heart! ❤

Strange there hasn’t been a musical or movie about her life story!
Because there's no drama....
An American treasure
Her house is a monument in Philadelphia she was a head of her time
I always thought it was cool that they named the school in American Dad after her.
GOD she was wonderful

Wonderful wise woman.
Queen Latifah would be wonderful playing Ms. Bailey.
She seems like she was a kind woman.
That's 1989 cause Whitney Tippett died in 1988 and she says "she passed last November", VERY good interview though :)
Unless Miss Bailey got mixed up with the date of Tippett's death of course
is this queen latifahs grandma or what??
3:40,4:20,& 4:50 Cold Hard Facts!!!
She looked good!!!!!-
I remember calling it the "cloak room." hahaha
Love her.
I was just graduating high school.
Miss Pearl....beautiful lady and brutally real soul. We need more Valkyries her.
Anyone here after hearing RuPaul say she would play her in Snatch Game?
She called Hollywood Sodam and Gomorrah!!! Whew chile!!
Big Mama
Rupaul said she would do Pearl for Snatch Game. Would be great.
Pearl bailey in the past. Queen latifah in the future
Pearl died the year this was recorded.
A little over a month after this interview she passed away.
She had a good career , she had an interesting life but was VERY competitive and not very liked by her peers :(

Can you clear why Angles are Female for men to please? what about woman, who would please them in other word.
looks like an snl skit
Despite her jovial appearance here - she was supposed to be an absolute monster and sheer terror to work with.
Now where did you hear that?
Not true!!! No not true😣
Looking around he’s telling the truth. She and my grandma were cousins and she and my grandma didn’t always get along..
I think she probably just demanded respect. Think about the times she had to work in and was in an interracial marriage
Of course anytime a Black woman demands you treat her like a whole person... She is considered difficult.
Angela Bassett should definitely play Pearl Bailey
Queen Latifah should
@Alain Quartermaine 😂
Here because of RuPaul.
