They wanted to bring back the old territory days with indies instead of wrestling promotions so they could be seen as the NWA of "modern wrestling". But they just couldnt handle the fact that Nick Aldis, Jacob Fatu, Hammerstone, etc look more like champions than any of aew's chumps could even dream of.
Wrestling as a sports based program might work but it has to be run in a very methodical way by somebody completely devoted to it and incredibly smart.
WWE said it's not a sprint, it's a marathon NXT was chugging along jogging and losing every week almost, but at what cost for AEW AEW already blew out and gassed out, already using all the shortcuts like former WWE stars like Big Show, Christian, retired legends Sting, Jake Snake, Celebrities Snoop Dog, Shaq, Tyson, and they're already out, they already did all the gimmick matches exploding matches, football matches, Matt Hardy's deletion, Bullet CLub, it's all forgotten in a day
I honestly get the impression they're under a ton of pressure from TNT. I don't believe for a second they're happy with their numbers hence why they're hot shotting Tyson at the last minute.
Tony Khan should've just bought MLW from the start, rebranded it as AEW, brought in the big names like Jericho, allowed JR to scout talent, and let Court Bauer book the shows with the big budget. Imagine the MLW roster (including guys like Jacob Fatu, Hammerstone, Dynasty, Hart Foundation, etc) at that time combined with some of the big names in the wrestling industry on TNT television booked by Court Bauer. The roster, the show, and the ratings would be on a whole different planet right now. Plus, Jacob Fatu would be AEW champ by now...
So ultimately Jim was right in alot of aspects of AEW while the basement dwellers decided to ignore all the warnings that a 40+ year Wrestling veteran tried to give them because their favorite wrestlers are Twinkle Toes and Off Brand Hardy Boyz. And now the dynamic dude is starting to see issues with the booking.
I think it's probably more accurate to say a lot of those fans genuinely like the way AEW does things. (and incidentally, many of them probably aren't/wouldn't be fond of the old school style of wrestling Jim does like.) AEW isn't really my thing, but it's undeniable they do have their own niche audience.
@@Tim85-y2q that I can't disagree with. But it's why alot of people said that the audience that they're trying to attract there is already there. One of their biggest problems with booking is that they have 2 UA-cam shows that are a total of 4 hours of squash matches. Guess that's what happens when you have a shit ton of people on your roster.
The Dark shows are actually better than Dynamite as well as they have less of the Elite on it 😂 Some of the guys actually look like decent prospects but we will never find out as the will just get stuck in stables on the main roster and get the occasional TV title shot.

The saddest part that Jim always glosses over, is that Meltzer treated ROH the exact same way he treats AEW. He despises Vince for never catering to him and giving him star treatment that he will cheer for just about anyone but WWE.
Meltzer treated SMW and OVW the same way he treats AEW. Guess who used to get booker of the year in the 90s? Guess who also was one of Dave’s closest associates?
This is why Wrestling NEEDS territories. The more minds floating ideas around, under diffrent circumstances, with different talent keeps creativity flowing. It gives you more angles to borrow ideas from. Writers block is a thing.
I think it will be interesting to hear what people say about AEW in 5 years when people start getting released. AEW has many problems, and while many segments are entertaining in themselves the show as a whole is definitely bipolar. There's no sense of progression through out the show like how it was back in the 90s. Both WCW and WWF when you watched an episode of Nitro or RAW there was a sense of progression. Like in Nitro it was talking about what the nefarious NWO will do next or what will Sting do to stop them while in WWF it was about Mr. McMahon trying to screw over Austin. Each episode there was a main thread that united the segments. You still had your underneath guys having matches and even angles but the announcers always let you know about the big picture. If I was Tony Khan the first thing I would change is the in-between segments. The connective tissue of the show. Have the show open not with a match, if you have to do a match make it a quick one but Open the show with the champion and his crew who is Kenny Omega right now doing something heelish. Q1 Have him let say come with the Bucks and Good Brothers and laugh at the audience for thinking that the Bucks. Say that when you are BC you are for life, then have Moxley with Eddie Kingston come in and tell them they will have a match with the Bucks & Omega and they are like fuck yeah 2 on 3 sounds fun, then when they accept have Kingston say we forgot to tell you brother but it aint a handicap match we got a surprise partner for tonight. Boom main event planned. Q2 Now during an interview segment have Cody talk about QT and w/e but he is then asked by someone hey did you hear what Kenny said about BC and have Cody be like nah man those days are over I'm now focusing on my Nightmare Family and dealing with QT then he is asked if he is the Third Man Mox was talking, and Cody is like you think?. Again you are keeping people talking about the main angle and have people think, will Cody in the future come back to the fold or not. Next Segment a midcard match with the announcers talking about who will be with Mox and Kingston. Q3 Another interview segment with the BC talking to someone backstage and being asked if they are worried about this third man and they are like no way we have all the gold why we worried. Then have another match. Q4 Weekly Interview segment with Sting and he is asked hey Stinger are or Darby involved with Mox and they be like we respect him but we have nothing to do with that and he talks about his feud with Archer. Another match starts. Now we are backstage one more time and The Sydall brothers are asked if any of them are going to help Mox and they are like we havent heard anything but we want to help anyway we can. Q5 Chris Jericho segment backstage they sell their match with the Pinnacle and during said segment Jericho is like after we are done with the Pinnacle we are going after the Bullet Club cause we are in the need of some gold. Pinnacle match with some job guys quick and easy. Q6 Have someone at the door of Mox and Kingston locker room have good ol Marvez knock on the door and have him asked who they got for the match tonight and Kingston answers and they are like dw bro we got you soon enough. A womans match happens next. Q7 Start of the main event have the BC come in first and be like who is it! Who is the guy who has your back Mox. Then Mox and Kingston come in and they say well this guy is someone you know and everyone knows in fact he is known as someone who outworks everyone, queue Christian Cage theme. There we go, it's a bit obvious but this makes sense if they want Christian Cage and Kenny match in the future. While I'm sure this is not the best way to book AEW I feel that at least there's more connective tissue in between segments now. It's not simply separate segments but all part of a main story. Someone much better than me at this could book a much better show but my point was to show how a much focused show would look if AEW simply focused on their main angle more instead of doing too many mini angles.
WCW was a mess too, which is why TimeWarner unloaded it after they bought Turner Broadcasting because they didn't want a loss-making entity. WWF was actually run in a way that they always made money, irrespective of domestic ratings, and they had far bigger distribution overseas than WCW so their global audience and revenues were bigger. Even WWF's decision to tape certain episodes that WCW took advantage of ultimately came down to money and savings, and WWF was rewarded with money while WCW had bragging rights which didn't matter to begin with.
AEW needs to realize too that CM Punk ain't walking through their forbidden door until they get their booking shit together, because if its just about throwing a ridiculous amount of money and creative control at him, he would already have done it a long time ago. =).
I watched AEW for a little over a year. I haven't watched any wrestling since 1998. I figured I could get back into it fresh with a new promotion. I will admit I was loving the presentation and people such as Cody, Dustin, Darby, Jungle Boy, and yes even Orange Cassidy. About six months in I started seeing the cracks. I should have noticed earlier but again I was what I consider a new fan since my 20 year absence. I just told myself they would learn from their mistakes and it would get better. Almost like a bad relationship. Instead they just got worse. Jericho looks and performs shittier as the weeks went on. Storylines that didn't make sense kept persisting. Lance Archer which I consider an undertaker type wrestler not getting a proper push pissed me off. Cody feuding with everybody. The women's division being a joke. The list goes on. I finally gave up on AEW and will not be returning. I truly hope some of the actual talent they have goes on to bigger and better things. Because this promotion is a joke. They insult their fans and many are too blind to notice. Just wanted to give some perspective from an ex fan of this promotion. I have a lot more gripes but nothing that Corny hasn't already covered.
Tony Khan will have no choice but to add the "Executive Producer" roles to retired or seni retired legends Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Sting, Paul" Big Show" Wight & Jerry Lynn. The currents AEW "Coaches" such as Dustin Rhodes, Christopher Daniels, Billy Gunn, Matt Hardy & Awesome Kong will need to be on the creative team. In short there way too many experienced veterans in the Pro Wrestling business in AEW just have this promotion ran by Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega along with Nick & Matt Jackson. Also Tony needs to buy Impact Wrestling (and Axis TV) merge rosters, thus creating three AEW shows: (1) AEW:Dynamite, (2) AEW: TNA Impact, (3) AEW: Dark Elevation This give AEW the ability to spread out the roster.
In the defense of potheads, I've been disappointed with AEW since day one. At best they're off a step, think they were better off with Gedo's booking. I'm honestly kind of hoping the "open door" brings in the Gedos so the booking improves. But no pot does not cover the lapses in logic and over booking. They take 3 extra steps to get to the same place.
Don Callis also tanked Impact Wrestlings numbers with his shitty booking. This is the same dude who booked a legit Killer like Karrion Kross as a lackey for a vanilla midget like Austin Aries. No wonder him and his misses bolted for the WWE.
I remember buying that AEW PPV for the exploding ring match, when it ended I knew I had wasted $60 and pretty much decided AEW wouldn’t get another cent of my money
AEW has really exposed a lot of the wrestling media, there’s been so many of them claiming it’s great and defending all the horrendous aspects of it... Very few people like Jim and Brian who have spoken the truth throughout, it’s kind of crazy so many of the wrestling media seem to actually like poorly booked terrible indy trash and really brings their already tenuous wrestling knowledge/opinions/tastes into question big time Guess it doesn’t help that 90% of them don’t have any real credentials and are just self appointed members of the “media” and nothing more than fans
I have these hopium dreams sometimes, that Cornette, Bubba Ray, and Mark Henry all get together and start booking AEW. Imagine what could be done if (1) someone separated the talent from the cosplayers and (2) the storylines maintained integrity through an entire match, let alone making sense over the long angle.
The only reason this program is still on TV is because I'd say about 150k fans watch it to listen to jims reviews. It takes me half hour to watch as I mostly fast forward. It's so awful and stupid. Meltzer and alverez have done their best to promote this and say how great it is. But in all honesty you can't Polish a turd
Brian is super correct about the consistency in territory stuff. I was watching a Jim Duggins Mid- South match literally yesterday and the Announcer called Jimmy Cornette "a mama's boy" and brought up Krusher betraying the US for the USSR during a match that did NOT feature the midnight express or Krusher or Volkoff. They just wanted to remind me, the viewer, of what was going on in the wider world of Mid- South
They have Arm and Tully and JR. They could form a booking committee with Tony Khan and perhaps Jericho, Christian, Big Show and Billy Gunn could help them. The EVPs and some top talent can still have creative control. Serena Deeb could have some responsibility on the booking of the women's division, maybe AEW can hire someone else with experience to help out. Then the show would at least have some cohesion, rather than everyone doing whatever the hell they want.
Im listening to this in February 2022, it's shocking the circumstances that have made AEW come a long way from this point. Cody's quit. NXT was completely gutted to the studs. WWE lays off waves of talent leagues ahead of the AEW roster at this time. Crazy time to be a wrestling fan!
Anime used to be good in the 80s,90s, and early 2000s. Seems to me the two fandoms and media overlap in so many ways. The modern fans do act alot alike and have ungodly shit taste.
I mean there are plenty of great animes today but you're right - there will never be another Akira, or another Ghost in the Shell, another Fist of the North Star, another Neon Genesis Evangelion, another Berserk, another Death Note etc. And even if it hasn't aged well by today's standards, there will NEVER be another anime that leaves such a monumental mainstream impact as Dragon Ball Z did.

Q1
Have him let say come with the Bucks and Good Brothers and laugh at the audience for thinking that the Bucks.
Q2
Now during an interview segment have Cody talk about QT and w/e but he is then asked by someone hey did you hear what Kenny said about BC and have Cody be like nah man those days are over I'm now focusing on my Nightmare Family and dealing with QT then he is asked if he is the Third Man Mox was talking, and Cody is like you think?. Again you are keeping people talking about the main angle and have people think, will Cody in the future come back to the fold or not. Next Segment a midcard match with the announcers talking about who will be with Mox and Kingston.
Q3
Another interview segment with the BC talking to someone backstage and being asked if they are worried about this third man and they are like no way we have all the gold why we worried. Then have another match.
Q4
Weekly Interview segment with Sting and he is asked hey Stinger are or Darby involved with Mox and they be like we respect him but we have nothing to do with that and he talks about his feud with Archer. Another match starts. Now we are backstage one more time and The Sydall brothers are asked if any of them are going to help Mox and they are like we havent heard anything but we want to help anyway we can.
Q5
Chris Jericho segment backstage they sell their match with the Pinnacle and during said segment Jericho is like after we are done with the Pinnacle we are going after the Bullet Club cause we are in the need of some gold. Pinnacle match with some job guys quick and easy.
Q6
Have someone at the door of Mox and Kingston locker room have good ol Marvez knock on the door and have him asked who they got for the match tonight and Kingston answers and they are like dw bro we got you soon enough. A womans match happens next.
Q7
Start of the main event have the BC come in first and be like who is it!
