- A quick play of Rainbow Islands, the sequel to Bubble Bobble which was ported to the C64 in 1989 by Graftgold and released by Ocean. It scored a fantastic 92% in Zzap on it's initial full price release (£9.99) and an even higher 96% when it was rereleased on the Hit Squad label for £3.99 a few years later.

This game was so much fun. I used to play it on the Atari ST and now its a favourite on my Pi emulator. As a sequel to Bubble Bobble they did exactly what they needed to, everything was more vibrant, cute and totally mad like an acid trip! Good choice.
Awesome I haven't tried the ST version, I expect it's great as it seems to be great on everything 😊 Thanks for watching
Played this loads on the Amiga. This version looks to be good too! I see Jason Page did the music on this version as well (as on the Amiga). Semi-relatedly, I used to work in the same building as Mr Page, chatted to him on a couple of occasions, nice chap.
He's a bit of a legend on the C64 mate, would have been awesome to meet him. I read a whole article by Andrew Braybrook about the Amiga version, it was a great read. I should revisit that.
Wouldn't of expected this to be Bubble Bobble 2, from bubbles to rainbows. Can definitely still see the similar fun formula in the mix though. Wonder what the vehicle themed boss on the 2nd island would of been? Well played and nice video Richard!🕹🌈 🏝🍀
Thanks mate hopefully I'll see the world 2 boss one day 😂👍
Forever one of my favourite Commodore 64 games ❤❤
Absolute gem 💎 mate
@@retrotap that music on the high score table too... Ooooomph!
@@SuperJim it's a jolly number 🥰
Love this game! Looks (and sounds) really nice on the c64. For a minute I really thought you were going to cheese the spider boss by sitting in the corner!
Have a fab weekend.
Thanks Ed it is a gem 💎 of a game this one. I was pleased to find a way past the Spider, but it'd be nice if I could beat it with skill rather than sneaky tactics 😛 Have a great weekend too 😁
One of those that's great on every system just like bubble bobble this would be great as a follow up on razas challenge but was not a fan of the 3rd game parasol stars. That spider boss was a pain in the ass for you 🤣 great stuff Richard buddy 🙂👍
Thanks mate yeah it would make a nice challenge wouldn't it? I don't remember Parasol Stars much but thought the story about the C64 version was interesting. Yeah struggled with that boss but found a way in the end 😂
Absolute classic this. Great for sibling co-op leading to inevitable tantrums and meltdowns when the other player messed up 🤣
Todd mentioned the mysterious second tape in the box. No idea what it is other than seemingly a cheeky second homemade copy of the game, perhaps we made to lend to a friend.
Nice vid, definitely up near the top of the C64 games for me 🙂
Thanks yeah I tried the tape but no joy 😂 I bet this is great 2 player, almost worth those tantrums 🤣
@@retrotap Todd can be very stroppy when he loses 😂
@@retrotap ask him about monopoly some time 😄
@@garethyates oh I definitely will 🤣
There is some brilliant versions of Rainbow islands on all platforms mate 🙌
Cool and fun game Richard 🕹 😎 👍
Yes Stew seems that the great gameplay of this translated well 🥰 Will be trying a few more ports I expect.
This is an awesome game! I haven’t seen the C64 port from memory but I’ve played the Master System one and the new port they did for the Mega Drive Mini 2!
I'll have to check that Mega Drive version out 👍
Wow this looks brilliant on the C64 Richard. I used to love this on the Speccy, that was a great version aswell but if ciurse not as polished as this.
Great vid mate👍
Cheers Lee, yeah I enjoyed this I will load up the Speccy version at some point soon I think.
Top Game ❤👍
It's great fun 😊 Gameplay that doesn't age
I like this more than Bubble Bobble. I have it on the C64 Addicted To Fun compilation. Played it a lot on Sega Saturn but never finished it.
It's a great game mate - never seen the Saturn version, I expect that's arcade perfect?
What a game this is Richard buddy 😄 again I think its great on every system I've seen like bubble bobble. Im sure if you collect all the different colours of diamonds you get a bonus stage, I think, have you ever played puzzle bobble?
Cheers mate, I think I've played it on the Master System & Amiga and they were great. The bonus stage makes sense thanks 👍 Yeah I have played Puzzle Bobble, mainly because the Mrs loved it in the PlayStation (called Bust A Move wasn't it?). There's a great version of that on the C64 too - I did a vid of it a while ago.
@retrotap that's the one bud, I loved bust a move 2 on the ps1, funny enough I got my mrs playing that a few years back and she enjoyed it. You should give the megadrive rainbow Islands a bash bud, it plays brilliant 😁
@steve36207 I'll check that one out, thanks mate
@@retrotap 😁🕹👊
Love this game just as much as I do Bubble Bobble , This looks like a fantastic port, I originally had this on my Speccy And now play It on my PS4 , I think the arcade version and NES Versions Among other ports Actually changed
the music Because it sounds too much like somewhere over the rainbow from wizard of oz 😂 Well played Richard, You seem to struggle on the first boss but got there eventually 😂 The game is actually A great choice it's being pride month, It's being the first game to have LGTB plus representation , You playing as the same characters As you did in bubble bobble , Only this time you have transitioned into your true human self from a dragon, Plus the games full of rainbows 😂Happy pride months mate we've gotta Represent.
Ha what a great spot buddy, didn't think of that at all! 💖 I might give the Speccy port a go too, I like seeing how those two differ. Yeah typical struggles for me mate with that first boss but I found a way in the end 😂
I saw this game a while back in fact I have it on emulation console might need to give it a crack intresting use rainbows rather than bubbles.
Nice one mate, would love to see you take a run at it
