Living In A Travato | Making Travato Beds Comfortable | Travato 59K

  • When you choose to live in a 21 foot camper van, a Winnebago Travato 59K in our case, you have to do things to make it as comfortable and efficient as possible. Not everyone would believe that we could sleep on these beds for 3-4 months at a time but thanks to a few changes we can easily do just that. When you’re living in a Travato you have the choice of a 59K or a 59G. In this video we not only show our bed modifications but also discuss why we thought the 59K was a better fit for our travels over the 59G, even though the under bed storage of the 59G fits our lifestyle a little better.

      Thank you Patrick. We are stubborn and persistent and it’s good to be growing for sure. Now folks are recognizing us when we go to a campground. That’s a strange feeling. The van is comfy the way we have it set up. Hope you’re doing well.

      Wow! That’s pretty sweet to say! Thank you! If there’s anything we haven’t covered about living in the 59K leave us a comment about it and we will try to cover it. Next week the topic is about staying connected in our Travato. We’ll talk about our WeBoost, WeBoost antenna, our Verizon 8800L with the unlimited data and how connecting a Roku to the Insignia TV makes it almost like being at home. We have a Facebook page, facebook.com/Van-Trekking-Lifestyle-806161653088289/. If you ever want to chat about the van or ask questions just reach out to us there. Thanks again for such nice words.

    What I like about this video is that you both are in it having a conversation about the journey and I can genuinely tell that you two are an amazing couple. To make a journey for three months and she’s somewhat claustrophobic that says a lot about how well you two get along. Very genuine but also shows that it’s completely worth it to take trips like this. The bed information was great because I agree, and say that two things are important, comfortable shoes and comfortable bed. Great work Owen!

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  5 років тому

      Aaah shucks :-) We both totally and 100% agree about the comfortable shoes and bed. At our place in our journey we have reached a place where comfort trumps everything else. If it’s not comfortable it has to go. Life’s too short. Thanks for letting us know what you like so we can do more of these types of videos. You are truly part of our Trekking team!

    Outstanding video. These are the videos folks are looking for. The information factor is important. You guys seem to have found a good fit between the "travel" part and the "technical this is how we live" part. I'm a little more interested in the technical at this point but after I get into this thing it will be the travel...lol. Its the circle of RV ownership...Thanks guys.

      Down to 41 here in Montana tonight so sheet and blanket plus another blanket might be needed. :-). We love ours too. We just finished the notes for a video about our first year with our K and we are so very, very happy with that purchase. We’re parked in a Walmart parking spot, I’ve got the passenger seat spun around and working... it’s almost like being at home except you can park it anywhere and go anywhere (within reason). :-). Glad you love yours!

    Just watched your video on how you sleep in the Travato. Very nice glad you showed how comfy it is when you don’t out the whole bed together because of the bathroom. I videos from dealers on line when they show you the bed how lay it down then you have to pick up the bed to get to the bathroom if it’s in the back.

    We currently travel in a partially converted Transit van. We use it to take scooter and motorcycles with us sometimes, and use it as a cargo van for hardware store trips. But when we are ready to switch to an rv it will probably have to be the Travato 59k. I love the open floorplan without big monuments in the way, and the rear bath with doors (I'm also claustrophobic). I'm totally hooked on vans (or class B) and don't think I'll go back to other types of motor homes or trailers. Thanks for the helpful bed video.

    I agree, the “G” model feels claustrophobic in the rear. There is hardly any living space never mind sleeping space. Even the bathroom seems smaller. In the “K” model, everything seems more spacious! I don’t mind the Desi and Lucy sleeping arrangements at all! My husband might not agree but we’re doing this is for me anyway! This is all my fabulous idea! 😂 This in my opinion is the best floor plan for a couple. So a regular twin size bedding for the driver’s side and twin XL size for the passenger’s side? Curious being that you travel for months at a time, how do you manage with the small refrigerator? Did you buy a separate refrigerator/freezer?

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  5 років тому

      Glad it helps John. As you can see from our channel, we’ve put 14,000 miles of travel being in our Travato and we’d be the first to say it is NOT perfect... but when you look at dollars spent vs. functionality and quality it is really, really hard to beat. We are loving how nimble this is... the turning radius, the ability to drive anywhere and the ability to park anywhere. You get that with other B’s too but for the money spent to get into this lifestyle it was a great decision for us. Good luck with your decision making process. If we can help with anything just ask.

    One of the things that sold me on our 2018 Travato was how comfortable the beds are. We downsized from a 28 foot Keystone travel trailer and the bed in that thing was second only to sleeping on a concrete slab.

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  3 роки тому

      We’ve had our share of concrete slabs. If it doesn’t give you the comfort of a good night’s sleep and it is too big to park anywhere... well, you made a great choice downsizing. Like us you probably figure out pretty soon that you don’t need all the room and stuff with you. Thanks for being with us!

    Thanks for your video, great information. After the topper and other bedding how high off of the floor is the top of the bed? Did the added height make it more uncomfortable to use as a seat - as in using it for dinette? Would also appreciate knowing the stock height of the bed before additions.

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  3 роки тому

      When we sat on the bed we always sat with our backs on the back part of bed and legs stretched out in front of us other times I would just cross my legs. I’m sure it would make using the dinette harder for shorter people. I’m sorry I don’t know the height of the bed before additions, we don’t have the Travato anymore. Thanks for the question.

      It’s not the same mattress, the mattress in the Revel is like a puzzle bed with two bolsters at the top. I’ve seen the mattress in the Travato G, but I’m not sure what size it is. Most RV mattress are not very comfortable so your brother might want to buy some kind of topper. I know the G’s bed can fold up so he’ll have to keep that in mind.

    How do you support your backs when sitting on the edge of the beds with your feet on the floor? Do you use the table that sets up in the middle? Thanks!

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle
      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  5 років тому +3

      Hi. That’s actually a problem. Even before adding the extra height of the mattress topper and pad you couldn’t comfortably reach the floor so your feet kind of dangle. If your feet reached the husband pillows would provide decent back support. But we don’t sit on the beds. We swivel both front seats around and when we are sitting we sit there. When we are lounging we really lounge laying down on the bed. We actually left the big table and the support legs at home and opt to use the two front “tables” instead and safe the storage spade. Works for us but it might not for everyone. Thanks for connecting with us.

But, to answer your question we've run the a/c off the generator many, many nights as we've boondocked. It is loud but sometimes that's a blessing in disguise. If you're looking at used Travato's with just and your dogs and you need to work from it, I'd look closely at the 59G model. Big enough bed for you and a work area and storage. We love our K but we waffle back and forth between that and the G. Also, if you buy a new one, don't be fooled by low hours on the generator. A good rule of thumb is to determine how many months old the van is and multiply that by 2 and that's the minimum number of hours the generator should have if it's been exercised properly. Have fun dreaming, looking and planning... that's one of the most fun parts of this journey. Thanks for being with us!

      Forgot to answer your question about 2nd B choice. These days there are a lot of choices similar for the Travato available. For us there are two that are on our list that we keep an eye on besides the Travato. The Winnebago Revel because of it's 4WD and the Leisure Travel Van Wonder because is the extra living space, safety features and garage for bikes and toys. Both are much more $$ so they stay on the wish list. 👍

    Hi, At night have you had the air conditioner on all night? If so is it because you are connected to shore power. Down in South Florida you might need your air conditioner on all night!

    Hello, I see the video is four years old but nothings changed with the twin beds…
    How thick is the topper that you use?
    What do you do with all that bedding if you want to use it as a couch for people who visit?
    Thanks

      We used a 3in twin topper on the beds. We kept them made up durning the day so we didn’t have to store the bedding anywhere. We didn’t mind sitting on top of the blanket.

    good info!! looking at this unit for it's openness now. Question, how big is Maggie and is she able to jump up on the bed, or do you have a little step for her? My 2 Havanese boys are bed hogs and need to be up there with me :) not sure if they will be able to reach...

    • @VANTREKKINGlifestyle

      Maggie is about 30-35 lbs. It is hard for her to jump up because she needs a little run and go, but she does it. It is easier for her to get down.

    We picked the K for the same reason as you. Really appreciate your full description about the bedding. We hadn't thought about the dip in the longer bench so will get a topper for at least that side. I also hadn't thought about needing the twin L so will check tomorrow to see if our sheets fit before heading out. We also wanted to keep the beds made up so we have bottom and top sheet with duvets and I bought a queen size French cotton coverlet and cut in half lengthwise it is a perfect fit. Thanks much!
    We are also wondering about the sewage hose and whether you are using the 10ft that comes with the van or a longer Rhino one? If using Rhino, how do you store it?

      @VANTREKKINGlifestyle  5 років тому

      Well first of all that you for the nice comment. We are glad you’re enjoying the videos. That gap may not bother you like it did me. We have a great mattress at home and this one is well not so great. It is now with the topper though.
      This is what we use for our sewer hose. You can park close enough to dump to usually get by with just this one. It will fit in the outside tube with the connector on. We store the elbow in a bag in the back wall storage. We also store an extra 5’ there too Hanging on the wall and a connector just in case we can’t quite reach. It goes in a dry bag that seals and keeps odors out.

      Hi Owen, Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean in the first sentence when you say "this". I've been looking for a pic or link but don't see anything. Would you mind clarifying? Also I did go out and check our under springs and they seem to have a tighter fit. So we might be okay with the mattress cover but really appreciate the idea of the topper. We bought our sheets at IKEA and they do have the longer length which means it will be too long on the shorter mattress. I think the XL is the European standard so perhaps that's why their sheet fits.
      One more little tip about the under storage, we had a variety of things we wanted to store under and wanted them to be separated. The little food shopping fabric pop-up boxes from our local grocery store fit exactly and add no extra weight. And we found a tip early on that worked for the foldup broom, it fits perfectly inside the passenger table without inhibiting the table pull out.
      Thanks again
