Watch the old movie sometime. It is pretty incredible. This was one of my favorites as it addresses so many different issues (domestic violence, loneliness, poverty, social standing, etc)

Maybe I’m the one lonelier than Blanche, as it seems I’m the only one here, who’s not writing a school paper on this play 🤣.

Me too, I came here because I really likes they movie. I felt very sad for Blanche.
Like with all writers who's names are taught by default in most schools, people make MANY interpretations about their works. But when it all comes down to it, I think "A Streetcar Named Desire" has a very uncomplicated and simple message about intimate relationships with toxic people. The scene where Stanley screams Stella's name is pretty much the only moment he's painted in a somewhat sympathetic light, he's otherwise short-tempered, rude, controling, manipulative, abusive, violent, petty, pretty much all the qualities of the textbook 'abusive boyfriend' character. He's the closest thing to this play's 'main villain'.
That aside though, reading the full play is VERY time consuming since it's so long. I did read it, but with just how long it is, I can sometimes lose track of how everything went. This video is a VERY helpful refresher. Thank you very much

I forgot how depressing this story is. All the women are victims of Stanley and Stella is now alone with her sister thoroughly traumatized and broken from the rape.
This book is so confusing because my opinion is constantly changing about Blanche. And the way she speaks in metaphors and rushed and in long boring speeches is so annoying because I just want a simple book to understand.
The scene where Stanley gave Blanche a bus ticket back to Laurel as birthday gift is just a pure comedic one
Looking at how adaptations of 'A Streetcar Named Desire' have changed over time has been so interesting, from the original script to the Marlon Brando film, and to newer remakes of the play, what a journey it has been. Blanche killed her husband. When he found out she was a whore. She also has a flashback when the phone rings, which is a call to her husband from the hotel uncovering Blanches’ “reservations” at the hotel. Exposing the truth causing her to kill him to protect her innocent school teacher reputation.

This video is too literal ! You just need to read the title of the play to understand what it is about. Stella the younger sister is still sexually viable and so regardless of inheritance she has the power over a man to be desired. Blanche regardless of her refinements is no longer viable and cannot even have control over the most base of men but he is what she secretly desires to conquer. Stanley represents sexual desire and the dilemma for her is insurmountable. It’s a tragedy to the extreme.
9:35 it should be important to note that Stanley didn’t plan to do what he dose to Blanche it’s only when she start’s acting afraid of him and what he might do to her if she walks by him dose he get the idea to rape her also, please don’t be mistaken that I’m justifying his rape i’m not I am merely explaining his thinking as a character

Actually there are earlier moments in the play that foreshadow Blanche’s rape. It demonstrates Stanley’s animalistic nature.
That does not exscuse what he does. He never should have done that, period. There is NEVER a excuse to sexually assault someone and we need to not encourage that. Blanche was the VICTIM in that situation, it doesn’t matter what she said, that she was scared, or how she reacted. It did not give him an excuse. If anything, it’s an example of one of the disgusting ridiculous reasons a person thinks excuses them to take advantage of someone, which happens to many people, mainly women, in real life.
I really hope you aren’t trying to defend Stanley in this situation because that’s what it sounds like and I honestly believe anyone defending Stanley’s or any person’s choice to RAPE someone is not a good person and clearly doesn’t understand what a truly awful person he is or comprehend by choice how horrific sexual assault is. This isn’t an opinion, or a debate, this is about basic women’s rights.
Stanley was in the wrong he abused his wife, raped her sister, disrespected her privacy, shared details of her life she did not give him permission to share, shamed her for her way of coping with a traumatic event, ultimately broke her mentally, and got her sent to a nut house for hysteria. which, I don’t know what mental health information they had then but it’s worth noting Hysteria isn’t even real. It was something made up my the mental health community in the olden days to punish women for feeling upset, angery, or to ignore the actual mental help they truely need.
Even if they didn’t know that when this movie was made. Blanche still didn’t deserve to be sent to a nut house and Stanley still did everything else he did. This is a story about how a man can abuse a woman. It’s a cautionary tale, Stella, for Blanche and her sake should have gotten out. But she didn’t and now, she has to live with a abusive husband and the harsh reality that SHE played a role in her sister’s mental decline at being abused by him. Because yes, Blanche was also abused by Stanley, just in a different way.
He’s the bad guy, he gets NO excuses, especially for sexually assaulting a woman for ‘acting scared of him’ honestly dose that even make sense, you don’t rape someone scared of you, you back off, get help, or confront the person. There’s no logic to Stanley’s choice.
A very unpleasant tale but well narrated

When Stanley threw meat at Stella what did that say about his character
His animalistic nature (show of physical strength) as well as traditional family dynamics (Stanley is bringing food home for Stella to prepare)
Also, when he says 'meat!', there you can see the sexual innuendo Stanley is hinting at Stella. And fun fact, there was a real life Stanley Kowalski who Tennessee Williams knew, but he based the behaviour and mannerisms of the character on one of his own boyfriends who was as violent and toxic as Stanley is shown in the play

@@angienoexistedisagree. Brando is the only good actor, Viven Leigh is cheesy, melodramatic, not my vision of Blanche. I think Cate Blanchet in Blue Jasmine was a better ‘Blanche’.
@@djslybaconmarlon brando the only good actor ? yet kim hunter was doing the same method as him and nailed it (hence why she took the oscar home), I don’t see what is it that he did that set that much of a difference in comparison to her. about vivien, you truly are saying that, precisely, being melodramatic and cheesy is off with the role of blanche ? she is exactly that way, theatrical and submerged in her world of ilusion where everything has a nice tint to it, let alone the movie, when you read the play, the way she talks, behaves and is described is melodramatic, it feels as if you’re watching somebody play a part in a stage bc that’s exactly what she does in the story, she doesn’t come off as naturally as stanley or stella, that’s why vivien’s classic acting fits the character so well and helps to stablish that division between her and stanley (brando). i genuinely couldn’t think of a better interpretation to the character for how loyal it is to the source.
Blanche was a horrible person, and deserved to pay for all her misdeeds. No free rides, "lady."

I believe Blanche turned horrible to most when people miss to remember that she was a caretaker for her family and she lost everything, later including her husband in a very tragic way, her job and her reputation. Those are quite unsettling events that lead to be a survivor of trauma. She did the best she could.
