- A dusty relic becomes a beautiful musical voice.
Very satisfying.
Note: this relatively short video shows the results of many hours of careful work.
Sorry about having to reupload this, if you were watching the first time. It had 6 minutes of black screen,

Got to love it when the old amps get to show off their stuff again. No fancy IC's, servo's, relays, or psychoacoustic trickery needed. Of course, a top-notch tech and an owner who cares surely helps.
Well said.
It is always great to see you restore these classic amps and the finished work.
Of all the beautiful restorations you’ve done, this one might be the most beautiful. The lead dress is spectacular!
I’d be interested to know the brand and spec of the ceramic disk caps you’re using. I have not been thrilled with any current production disk caps, particularly in the signal path.
Thanks again for all your vids!
omg the harmonic tremolo at 4:58 is glorious!
Sounds like my Red Witch Lyria!
Those Vishay caps sound amazing. I like to use them in old fuzz builds to.
"Fender Fest" sounds like a party that I would definitely want to attend. Thanks!
DITTOS on that festivity!
Looks freqking BRAND NEW! There are just oodles of warm midrange frequencies that you just can't get in the blackfaces, generally. GREAT JOB on this JEWEL!!
It's all in the details, and you sir, do the details well...!!
Love the tones you can get from that amp now. Thanks again Lyle for such awesome skills and that Floyd snippet. Now i see why everyone wants that amp 🤩🤩🎸🎸
Love seeing such a lovely old piece of gear treated with the care it deserves.
Mahalo Lyle! Can't wait for the Fenderfest. Aloha!
I recently acquired a 1960 Super that has the same tone stack, and it's sort of between 6G4 and 6G4-A. I found that it has some resistor values in the PI that stray from both schematics. Seems like Leo and the gang were definitely doing some experimenting in 1960. I think I'm likely going to need to replace many of the Astrons in my amp as well.
Beautiful soldering, Lyle. Pretty much indistinguishable from factory. Thanks for setting the high bar for all of us. (:
I never realized until just now how great soldering work can make even new parts in an old amp look "correct"! Thanks!
The world needs more Lyles 🙂
It's always nice to see how other people build. I can appreciate the detail and continuity.
Take a look at the 6G8 Twin schematic and you’ll see that circuit. It’s the only one Fender did that matches that transition circuit between the 6G* and the 6G*~A amps. It seems to appear around October/November 1960 and is gone by January of 1961.
😁👍👍
REALLY looking forward to the "Fender Fest"...!!!😉👍👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
Very nice, sounds great, love that vibrato circuit 😊
That Tremolo, just Wow!
So beautiful to eye and ear.
Beautiful piece of history and equipment.
Yet another work of art, Lyle!
Tech question- I made 4 amps with this tremolo circuit. Sold the 1st 3 and the one I made for myself has a depth control that is out of hand. Anything above 1 on the dial makles a pulse that would kill a speaker. There is no good info on tweaking these circuits on the internet. Any thoughts on a good starting point? PS- Thanks for the video on tweaking the EF86 in an AC15 (plate vs screen voltage)
A beautiful amp now sounding it's best.
Did I detect some PF there? Lol
I sure did! 🤩 dark side
Boy, that amp sounds wonderful!
Hey Lyle. Would really love to see a parts list on this one. Really love your work. I
you know someone saw that bundle of wire on their table and said: huh, I wonder where that was supposed to go?
Thanks for the update on this amp. I have one which I am in the process of restoring. Where do you get your replacements for the astrons?
I’ve been using the Mallory 150 capacitors. Any particular reason why you prefer the Vishay Roederstein? I like that the outer foil line is present.
Did I hear some Pink Floyd on that Vibrato channel?
Breathing nicely ...
Fast Breathing.
Have you pickups arrived yet Lyle?
At least with the classic amps like tis you do not have to contend with lead free solder. Some of those wires look quite close to the sheet metal screws.
That's beautiful. I've wanted a pedal that perfectly emulates the lush harmonic tremelo on these brown face amps. Anyone tried anything that nails that effect; other than spending +$3,000 on an amp like that?
Strymon Flint gets dang close. Shame it has a hiss like 99% of current digital pedals…
The Harmonius Monk is the best one I've heard.
Would love to hear what the amp distortion sounds like.
You will, just not in this bench mic audio.
What brand and model of ceramic disk caps did you use for the lfo/tremolo?
Vishay 562R 1KVs.
@@PsionicAudio thanks, they looked like real quality yet slim/small enough for that circuit
The "Fender Fest" would be interesting if all the amps were with the same gain and EQ settings, played with the same guitar.
Due to the very different circuits the amps cannot be set “the same” aside from the Twin and Super reverbs.
Did you get those Vishay caps from Mouser ? Do you have a P/N for them ? . . .tks for all the assistance you have given us over the years 😎
Mouser and CE both stock them. Vishay MKT1813 in 400V and 630V.
