Have never watched it before
You left out the uncertain fate with Jerry and Quacker when Tom lowered the umbrella at the beach.
Too much darkness in years
Its better having a true enemy than a fake friend - Tom and Jerry
Amen
Well said.
Real Shit! 💯
I laughed when Jerry held a paper that said, "Is there a doctor in the house?" 😂😂
In a similar Bugs Bunny short, Bugs turns to the Doctor and says:
What's Up Doc?
@@williamjones7163 Bugs Bunny: Is there a Doctor in the House? x2
Audience Member: I'm a Doctor.
Bugs Bunny: Eeyeeeh, What's up Doc?
Yeah i know how funny it is about Jerry peak inside didn’t know Tom was in there

Which cartoon was that?

Oh, Hair Raising Hare. That featured Gossamer. I. E. the red hairy monster who wears those sneakers. 👟 👟
bro every cartoon from the 1920s to the 1960s had many dark moments
yes> Cause every classic cartoon back then had thier own roller coaster of emotions from happy to Tramatic then scary and Sad and Finally happy again.
It goes past the 60s. The 70s, 80s, 90s, and even modern cartoons have dark moments.
@@jcoolguy1548 true there are cartoons in the 90s like the cowardly dog that still had many dark moments
That train ending disturbed me when I first saw it, and I was an adult, imagine seeing it as a kid.
Unfortunately, I was a child when I first saw that. Watching that did give me nightmares for a long while.
I saw it as a kid and didn't understand it
It hit real hard knowing the scene a few years later, and then getting into a nasty irl breakup in 2023
Didn't even noticed the meaning of the train tracks until a few years later.
Holy crap.
For me as a child, I was confused at first and didn't know what to make of the ending. Fast Forward, at 10, I not only felt like crying, but I was going insane over the cliffhanger. I'm surprised they actually redid this and to be honest, I've never felt more sad and distressed for Tom and Jerry than I ever have in my whole life.
Right? It's a lot like that Popeye cartoon - one of the older black and white ones - where it ends with someone committing suicide by shooting themself.
Old cartoons had so many dark moments but as kids we didn’t notice some of them
Ever seen the 1970s PBS children's classic ZOOM?
They had a "Play of the Week" called "The Bridge" (1972) that is WAY OUT THERE. and it was written by a young girl from Houston, TX.
I know what you mean!
Facts
I honestly thought the kittens in the bag was darker because of the whole innocence factor!
True true
Fluff, Muff and Puff were their names, I believe hearing him say
@@motherlove202 from "The Aristocats," I believe? I could be wrong....
Those kittens look like the same ones who tormented Tom and Jerry behind Mammy Two Shoes' back.
@@WWChampion16 possibly....
The Hannah-Barbara style was the golden era of Tom and Jerry's animation history
I grew up watching Tom and Jerry. It was a cartoon that I love for it's slapstick gags and a large amount of violence that they got away with back during the '40s and '50s. As an adult, I have to say that after 8 decades, these classic shorts still hold up really well. Heck, I'd even argue that the slapstick holds up better than Looney Tunes. William Hanna and Joesph Barbara did a really fantastic job with the comedic timing of the gags and they established the one single rule that the title characters aren't allowed to talk with a few exceptions of course. Overall, Tom and Jerry will always hold a special place in my childhood as a timeless classic and will always be considered one of the greatest cartoons of all time.
Definitely, the clips from the 60s look so uninspiring compared.
Yeah I never enjoyed the Chuck Jones ones. They were violent in an over-the-top unnecessary kind of way like the humour in it is for the sake of being flashy and juvenile. At least the Hanna Barbera ones (the classic ones) usually held some sort of deeper meaning, art styles, music and voice acting.
The part with the lion was admittedly hilarious. The owner limps back to Tom, takes a moment to take a sip from the thermos, proceeds to count to ten in the raspiest voice possible before braining him with said thermos.
Clubber had absolutely zero redeeming moments in his brief 3 existence. No wonder he got removed from the show.
Yeah I love the part when Clint gets attacked by the lion 🦁 when gave Jerry gave Tom a water bottle instead of the gun
@@vanessasandoval96 The Guy isn’t called Clint Clobber. The design was similar to Clint’s. Wrong guy.
Fun Fact: Tom's owner in the Gene Deitch cartoons was ironically named Clint Clobber.
I think that name was coined by Tom & Jerry fans.
I’d like to see Clint arrested for animal abuse
I heard there was a lot of complaints against the creator those cartoons. Unfortunately some of them were even threats that's just how hated that character was in the franchise.
Actually Clint Clobber was a Terrytoons character, which I think was created by Gene Deitch when he worked at that studio.
@disneyfan8178 That's true but rather or not Gene had the rights to the name in the Tom and Jerry shorts is another matter.
I know we’re supposed to root for Jerry, but sometimes I really wanted to give Tom a hug when I watched Tom and Jerry as a kid
Tom is the victim, Jerry is the real bad guy
Nah, I don't think they want you to root for Jerry. I think it's up to the viewer who they want to root for. For me, I was always on team Tom.
One dark Tom and Jerry moment that lives in my mind is from the episode "The Missing Mouse". Towards the end of the episode, Tom tries to kick out a white mouse and then it explodes; afterwards, Tom says, "Don't you believe it" in the most disturbing and souless voice ever. I'll never forget it 😅
Every dark moment still revealed a life lesson throughout the episode though. ❤
You never grow too old for tom & Jerry. I loved it as a kid in the 80's and I still love it today. Number 2 on this list is one of my favorite episodes.
Almost every cartoon has a dark moment.
Not almost. Every
Fact
Exactly
No
SpongeBob doesn’t. It’s comedy gold
I actually remember watching these shorts as a kid and thought nothing of it. But recapping as an adult is quite sad. Now I wanna rewatch Tom & Jerry again.
I'm genuinely surprised the final scene in "Southbound Duckling" wasn't the number one choice.
For the uninitiated, the short involves Tom going after Quacker with Jerry intervening. By the end of the cartoon, Quacker and Jerry are relaxing on a Florida beach, when Tom pops up behind them, slamming a toy bucket over them and trapping them. As we hear Quacker demanding to know what's going on from under the bucket, we see Tom pull their beach umbrella down with an evil grin, hiding what he's about to do. That's how it ends.
Basically, it's HEAVILY implied in this cartoon Tom caught and ate them both.
Still the darkest moment I've ever seen in a Tom and Jerry short, particularly considering it's how the cartoon actually ENDS, meaning there's no last minute save.
Tom and Jerry Is One Of Those Classic Cartoons that I watched 24/7 on Cartoon Network like Looney Tunes The Flintstones and Scooby Doo I was considering watching the 2021 movie but I have a busy schedule so many things to watch
the darkest moment in tom and jerry is when you realise most kids today don't know who tom and jerry is...
As a kid I didn’t see the last one as them ready to off themselves but it taught me one thing never fall for a gold digger
0:01 I remember being shocked by this episode when I was young Thanks for meaningful and valuable video as always 😂
I'm impressed by how many of these episodes I actually remember, and boy some of them are DARK
That’s because that Jerry tested Tom’s patience one time too many and is glad that Toodles is on his side again. It took me forever to understand this cartoon, but it’s the end that counts the most.
Anger management wouldn’t go over well for Tom’s owner, given how much violence he resorted to in his three episodes: “High Steaks,” “Down and Outing,” and “Sorry Safari.”
There was a character similar to Tom's mean owner in the cartoon called "Dicky Moe."
This character was a sea captain who's obsessed with capturing a gigantic white whale, whose name is Dicky Moe, which is an obvious reversing of the name of the titular whale in the classic novel "Moby Dick" by Herman Melville. The obsessed captain is apparently based on Captain Ahab, the mad seaman who's determined to capture and KILL Moby Dick, as revenge for his having lost a leg to the elusive white whale.
In the cartoon, the mean captain hires Tom and Jerry as sailors to accompany him in his search for Dicky Moe. As might be expected, he treats the cat and mouse like slaves, making them do the hardest labors on the ship, yelling at them whenever they mess something up, and generally making their lives miserable.
I don't quite remember exactly how the film ended. All I recall is that somehow, the whale floats away with Tom stuck on him, while the enraged captain chases after them, screaming "Come back here with my whale!"
I think Jerry survives unharmed.
Heavenly Puss still scares me to this day especially with the images of Hell and what Tom has to go through, and Blue Cat Blues hits me very hard when Tom and Jerry lost their love interest in favor of their rivals and they wait for a train to commit suicide, I feel extremely bad for them, and I went through a similar process, they’re always my favorite cat and mouse rival duo, but sometimes it’s not all fun and games.
Witch Hazel sounds exactly like the one from Disney's Trick-Or-Treat when she took Huey Dewey and Louie for a joyride after finishing her brew potions to bring along and possess different objects like the jack-o'-lantern and the ghost trio themselves. absolutely amazing,
That's because June Foray did both roles and the witch and owner in the Tom and Jerry short that was on the list.
@@stephenholloway6893 what about the one from Looney Tunes?
Yes but her debut short. That was Bea Benedict.
I remember seeing some of the Tom and Jerry cartoons and but I never knew that most episodes can have a dark side. But heavenly puss was the one of the darkest cartoons I saw when I was a child.
I love how the background music keeps changing
Any moment where the characters are contemplating Suicide is to dark for kids.
I've seen them all at the age of 8 to 12, and now I know why I love dark shows and dark animes. Thank you, Tom & Jerry. Thank you
The Gene Dietch episode Buddies thicker than water I really liked the episode as a kid
However the ending of the episode was dark becauze while yes Jerry did the right thing and left tom outside in the cold
You then realized he was willing to let him freeze to death and then the triumphant ending music was playing as Jerry was creepily smiiling at the camera before going back in the apartment and started sleeping peacefully in the next shot
Idk playing it repeatedly made me realize it but holy shit it was another death episode for tom 😂😂
I was actually talking about this since yesterday. One of the darkest moments in Tom and Jerry was when they was on that railroad track.
Just when I started talking about it, I see notifications for it. Why am I so good at predicting the future?
LMAO I do that w/ MUSIC sometimes....random song pops into my head, and some time in the near future, after it popped into my head, it plays on w/e I'm listening 2 at the time
@@The_Legend47 Good point, 47.
@@IAmTheRawls that is pretty much the **extent** of my "future-telling abilities," though LOL
@@The_Legend47 Reminds me of what some people say about it.
As dark as the Tom & Jerry shorts were capable of being it doesn’t take away from the fact that Tom & Jerry were nominated for 13 Oscar’s & won 7 in the animated short category.
Plus winning 4 of them in a row.
That train sound in the end haunted me for years when i was a kid
My favourite show.
Such a childhood
Always loved watching it from around 2011-2014.
Good old days.
Its humours amazing but exploring the dark tones can sometimes be interesting.
As a kid we usually routed for jerry but when we grow up we begin to feel bad for tom, ngl ive always been a tom supporter.
Good vid btw!
*interesting
Before I watch this I'm just going to leave this comment:
in one of the Tom and Jerry's , (it's the one where Tom dies and is not going to be let into heaven) and that's when you see a sack full of kittens going past the Saint Peter angel cat... when I was a little kid I understood what it meant and it made me cry my eyes out to my grandmother and I guarantee you that's going to be on this list but I had to say it before I watched it just because that was the saddest thing I've ever seen in Tom and Jerry and it made me FREAKING BAWL😱😫😭😭 but then again this is like 1981 and I'm like 4 years old LOL
It was shocking to watch this especially how Tom's owner is abusive
The Chuck Jones cartoons a few years later were much better than those, but they couldn't beat the Hanna-Barbera originals.
@@raymondhopwood9393like the Tom and Jerry kids? What a show.

You forgot to mention Spike he was a bully and a half I hated him when I was a kid and I still hate him how he treated Tom
Didn’t expect tom and jerry to have dark moments 😪
You clearly haven't seen The Fast and The Furry. Tom straight up murdered an old woman and her dog, and didn't show any remorse for it. He is one bad kitty.
You're probably a Gen Z
Poor Tom.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I think the darkest moments were when the series had occasional insensitive humor segments against certain groups of people. 😨 I used to watch Tom and Jerry all the time, and they aired the uncensored episodes on TV up until the early 90s or so.
Even Chuck Jones 's version of Tom and Jerry has one creepy things
I love this cat & mouse duo
Blue Cat Blues stopped airing I think in the mid-2000s. It only took adults 50 years to realize that the characters committing suicide via train might be a bit much for kids.
It’s wild that some of Gene Deitch’s shorts(especially Tom’s owner) made it to Cartoon Network for a time
You misspelled "Gene"
Even though when you become an adult you realise what a massive jerk Jerry is, it's interesting to see in this list that some of the darkest stuff doesn't come from him. Sometimes it happens to him as well as Tom.
Not really
I liked how you evolved more with sound effects added for commentary even more to make more sense.
The kittens in the wet napsack at heaven's door was pretty bleak for a cartoon. A low key hint at animal cruelty even if we didn't get it as kids.
Number 6 is quite disgusting, even by my standards.
Some of these are sad and tragic
That guillotine was traumatizing...even to this day i get nightmares from it.
These new kids would probably think this show is boring. Smh
@WatchMojo You should also do top 10 best Tom&Jerry Episode. The show is so ahead of its time, unmatched illustration, animation, music, plot even to this day.
The one that ends with Tom & Jerry both sitting on Train Tracks waiting for the train, was The Darkest episode I saw growing up.
Never noticed with the witch episode that the tombstone number eight had the name "Butch" on it. The same name as a black cat that appeared in some of the other Tom and Jerry cartoons.
Some of these were some of my favorite episodes too
Love Me, Love Mu Mouse is one of my favorites
In Two Mouseketeers the sound of Tom's tail being cut off still cracks me up! Schlouk!
One of the darkest moments for me was when Tom was drowned by the giant octopus.
When looking back on some of these moments now as an adult, all of it was anything but a harmless game of cat and mouse.
Good thing everyone is a toons here meaning no one actually gets hurt physically
You don't realise how brutal the franchise is till you get older
indeed. The guillotine one was traumatizing...even to this day i still get nightmares from it.
Tom: OUCH
“Saws it in half”
Jerry: 😲 is there a doctor in the house?
3:28
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
T&J had many dark moments...every time Tom ripped up that book.
When i saw blue cat blues, i was very young. I just watched the whole episode asking myself when the next funny episode was, since all i cared about was something funny to happen in tom and jerry so i didnt show much emotion, but now that ive grown up i feel insanely bad for tom.
I think I've seen all these episodes. I didn't realize they were dark, especially as a kid.
The last episode was very dark.
You mean when Tom got his heart ripped out and hit rock bottom, drinking, and then waiting for a train?
@@Dbzmaster159
Yes.
@@jaylene.turner6524 It's not the last bro. Tot watchers is the last one.
I'd just like to say this about blue cat blues. It's doesn't really make sense. I mean Tom's been hit by bowling balls, anvils, safes, pianos, been sawed in half, blown up by fireworks, and even beheaded. I highly doubt a train would've got him.
Tom over there looking strung out in the thumbnail 😂 🤦🏾♀️. He hasn't 💤😴 for days
Sounds dark at what I’m about to write, but my favorite is Blue Cat Blues. At least both Tom and Jerry are sad together than being sad separately. Sometimes a little bit of a cry isn’t always so bad. Depending upon what it is.
Oh hells yeah! Another Tom and Jerry list. Thanks WatchMojo.
Can't imagine why the producers would make moments like these in a wacky sitcom
I was really young when I watched these cartoons, and I didn’t understand most of the jokes, I just enjoyed Tom and Jerry beating each other up. It is a bit dark now that I look back, but I kinda enjoy dark humor so…
Now for Top 10 T&J episodes where Tom gets the best of Jerry
This brings back memories 😊
Tom wearing a wig was priceless after his injuries.
Please do a top 20 version of this list soon. And the same for Looney Tunes.
Blue Cat Blues is the most darkness one of all time.
I'm amazed Tom & Jerry: The Fast and The Furry didn't make the list, or even the honorable mentions, since it shows Tom at his most ruthless, cutthroat, and evil. If he were sentenced for his crimes, he'd be facing death row for his actions in that film alone, including straight up murder.
Don't let that puddytat fool you; He can be down right evil when he wants to be.
"Blue Cat Blues" is the only ep from here which I haven't seen on TV. Dunno it was even aired or not
It rarely aires nowadays. But to my knowledge it's not forbidden to still air.
The toodles story actually makes sense, felines of all types nurture other young as they are coming into season and then when ready to mate, they either eat it or it starves cos she can't mother it properly. It's why there are so many videos of felines being "nice" to young of their prey species. I worked on a farm that had loads of feral cats and we'd see them with chicks and ducklings all the time and once found the remains of a puppy where a cat had nested with her kittens and never found where she stole the puppy from. So, it's a kind of joke around that I think
Man jasper pie knows how to find dark moments 😂
I think the bag of drowned kittens from the episode Heavenly Puss will be on here
English isn’t my first language, so I couldn’t understand any scenes with dialogues, all I knew was Tom was going to have troubles with it, so by the time I finally understood all of them, some were genuinely sad
I didn't think much as a child.😅
TOP 10 Ugliest Robots
Their feud definitely needs to come to an end. No more destruction and mayhem.
Tom by the train was sad. 🎉
Possibly the greatest double act in entertainment history. Deep down you knew they were friends, but it was always far better when they were feuding.
Heavenly Puss and Blue Cat Blues were definitely not ones to shy away from more serious subject matter. Love Me, Love My Mouse was like Hanna-Barbera's take on that one Looney Tunes short where Sylvester wanted to eat a mouse but his lover wanted to raise it as her own child (even though Sylvester would eventually come around and look after it).
I still love my Tom and Jerry shows classic and new
Grimm as the are, almost every episode in this list was my favorite😅
Seriously, Jerry’s robo mouse’s injury(just one arm injury) is less painful than tom’s robo cat’s injury(like it’s a half full-on bodycast), why did jerry had to be punished in that short
What about when Tom & Jerry were on an island populated by cannibals and by the end, they were being chased by said cannibals to be eaten?
Jerry even dressed as a cannibal til the real ones arrived and wanted to eat both of them.
I watch alot of Tom and Jerry cartoons, but I never seen the early 60's ones with the guy master for tom
I thought there would be Rock n Rodent were Tom gets woken up by his alarm and gets a black eye as well, gets droned underwater, gets Beeten up by a dog and runs through the wall.
The one where Tom goes to hell is by far the darkest moment for me.
i'd like to see a Top 10 or 20 of Tom and Jerry shorts

I’ve always hated Jerry. I remember wishing Tom would finally get him.
High honorable mention: CANNERY RODENT and JERRY, JERRY, QUITE CONTRARY.
Both are from the Chuck Jones "Fat Jerry" era.
"Year of the Mouse" was also from that era and deserves HM, for the way Jerry and that other mouse psychologically tortured Tom throughout the episode. I liked the ending, at least.
