Very underrated game. Hilariously intense for what it is -- the video doesn't do total justice to playing by yourself with headhpones on. It is a very spooky experience lol
One of that games that you want to play with friends
Fun, brutal and fun x2
True so good ! I wanted more games like this...
Picked up 4 copies of this game for like $10 back in the day on a whim and now it's a favourite fallback with me and my friends that invariably ends up in all of us screaming constantly. Awesome little gem that I almost never knew about.
@@KommandantWaffle Because it's been available to play on Steam for years.
I never found friends to give my extra copies to, but I had fun with the game until my pc stopped running it properly.
One thing I wish was covered is the campaign mode. Default single missions swing wildly in difficulty as demonstrated. The campaign mode does a better job adding complexity through multiple ships, ramping up to this level of difficulty. It makes the game more accessible and interesting. The campaign is rerolled every week, so that you can actually learn what to expect to help make it further. Game is a blast with friends but is extremely intense.
Yeah, the game needs charges that collapse rooms to seal breaches or grenades that exploade to fill a room with a solid substance. To take it a bit further the player could have a class giving access to additional skills or equipment.
One of the best parts of this game is that the flashlight doesnt suck.
99.9999% of all games ever released have that shitty tiny little flashlight that makes you go tunnelvisioned.
It also has a range of more then 5 meters, which I very much appreciate.
Yeah this game is intense even by just watching, I love how the music is incorporated into the gameplay by how close the xeno are close to you.
Yeah, it's those little things that really heighten an experience ^^
I remember discovering in System Shock 1 that the beeping of your low health meter is synced to the rhythm of the level music, and it blew my tiny teenage mind xD
Been playing this since 2017, it's one man and he's very passionate. I love this game
amazingly brutal and good game I've played a long time ago, glad you got to check it out. 4 things related to how the game works that I wanted to point out for anyone wanting to play that's important to know: in multiplayer specifically, if you die, there is an option where you can get "reinforcements" as in players respawning (as long as 1 person is alive) ... you still come back with 0 upgrades, and the respawn timer is long enough that generally speaking if you died once, it's a major hurdle to still win the map (I mean... it's a major hurdle regardless... but you are starting on a map with 0 upgrades that has already had extra time for more breaches to happen). also of note: getting mauled to death the second you get touched is not singleplayer only, multiplayer it is still very much instant death. it doesn't matter if you have 3 other guys right there shooting the alien, once you get hit you are already dead.
second, not all armoury's are the same! there are different ammo types, you start with "light" but you can find armouries with better ammo that does more damage, etc.
third: breaches can spawn a space beast (those are the bigger aliens that will instakill you on contact) while you are directly underneath, killing you instantly. there is a sound notice to let you know one is about to spawn, so make sure to pay attention to it, because having to walk right under a breach is something that eventually WILL happen practically every other, if not every, map.
lastly: the small aliens (they attach themselves to your face, don't remember what they are called ingame), bullets (from sentries or bounced back from a laser grid) and walking through a laser grid, do not instakill you, but instead deal damage by disabling upgrades you have (and then killing you) should you ever find yourself in this situation, repair stations are around to repair you, but they only repair so many "points" at a time and you may run into situations where you are damaged enough you need 2 or 3 stations to heal back to full.
I could've sworn when I was playing earlier I had been attacked multiple times by the bigger space beasts and I was able to shoot them off of me a split second before they could kill me. Maybe it was one of the other players saving me?
@@Trash-O-Negative You can be rescued by players but they have to shoot the beast off you- and not shoot you into them
The ammo now upgrades with science by rescuing scientists
Lag can also glitch you to look like you're dead.
The small little bastards are fittingly named Astro-Creeps xD
So glad you played this game! It's a real hidden gem in my opinion.
The music is absolutely phenomenal. And once you get a good feel for the game, and start turning up the difficulty, you just get these really intense long missions, with really tactical decision making.
In my first mission, I legitimately died to the first alien, lol.
This looks like a game that's wayy too tense for me to play, but would be really entertaining to watch a stream of.
I can confirm. I played it a few years back, and it was just too stressful for me to handle.
Goodness gracious, somehow knowing the number of *dirty xenos* made it so much more terrifying when seeing the excitement marks. 😂
A meta progression wouldn't have to break the randomness and challenge of the game. They could create special rooms and weapons whose stats can be changed, and that aren't guaranteed to spawn. You'd invest points into things like their chance to appear, and how good they are at what they do.
I for one am glad you got mixed up on what the armory is; what you described with a player coordinating others is a great feature that you didn't happen to come across during the playthrough. I'm glad it got mentioned 😁
When you click so fast that there isn't even a thumbnail yet.
Still isnt one half hour later lol
Wait, you clicked so hard your thumbnail disappeared???
Man I played this with my best friend years and years ago and we loved it. Forgot all about it, and only remembered it thanks to you uploading this. Thanks Splat
OHHHH WOOOOOW!!!
This game...I played it years ago. Me and a buddy spent SIX HOURS straight just glued to the screen. At first trying to understand wtf is going on, then surviving, then beating missions!
Excellent, excellent game
Hal Apone in the memorial segment and Hadley's Hope in the premade maps. This game pays such a great homage. Game over, man! Game over!
Move it, Spunkmeyer! We're rollin'!
Me, when I see the Space Beast: "I feel terror and fright"
> "...a cold war between you spraying bullets and the aliens trying to get to you."
Pretty sure that's a very hot war Splatty.
Man, "Alien" really hit all the right buttons to keep being relevant for so long.
Scary man-eating creatures hunting you in the darkness are timeless
Ridley Scott set out to r...pe the audience. So we're all still collectively reliving the trauma
Nice! Glad you got your first win while showing us how it's done. That's good content, right there.
This is one of those games where the experience is much more fun with friends that scream loudly under pressure.
*heavy Ordo Xenos breathing*
This is brining back those 1980s movie style of fear! Nice!!
What a bizarrely astroturfed and inaccurate claim. Are you supporting the dev on Patreon or something?
@@Kalalification why are you so upset about someone's opinion, did one of the devs sleep with your girl or something?
@@Kalalification Schizo moment
@@Kalalification did you remember to take your meds?
I played this game for 30+ hours and I can really confirm that the atmosphere is just amazing when you play by yourself. Pure fear and panic...
That's not something you can really experience by just watching a youtube video, I think. Definitely recommended.
To this game's massive credit, having watched the video i have absolutely no clue what the aliens look like.
Yeah, the art direction is really good in that the way the game is played, it almost never gives you a chance to get a good look at them.
A horror experience very quickly loses its potency once you've clearly seen the thing you're afraid of, so this game has really taken that to heart.
“Spacehulks corridor crawling carnage”, you my good sir are quite the wordsmith :-)
> "This is the most contact I've seen in a long time."
"SAFE"
Oh SAFE are the laser walls I didn't realise I thought it was just being ironic.
This review is perfect. ♥
By the way: The Map Room was an Early Access community suggestion that went through a whole brainstorming session. :)
This game is so much fun. I rarely play it, but it's always a bucket of laughs when I do. Missions never take too long either
The brutality of this game is very much on point with its theme imo, if maybe unfairly so for solo, I can only imagine the thrill of going through missions as a group. A game simply well executed imo.
I think this game would benefit from a light filter of pixelation and a significant reduction of the muzzle flash.
Yes, but you enter panic mode significantly faster when the monsters are sprinting towards you while you shot like a maniac and think "I really hope that I'm hitting something". XD
You can reduce it in the options iir, but you get used to it. The strobe effect really adds to the intensity if you can handle it.
@@Mfunn Alien Isolation is the only Aliens game ever made, this game is a ton of fun but with the xenos being made of papier-mâché it doesn't feel as "Alien"
@@Jrock420blam well man, when you have the gun that is the size of your torso and shooting micro rockets, I would be surprised if somehow didn’t kill the aliens.
@@anonymousguy720 good point, it's more similar to Doom on the hardest difficulty than it is to Aliens if you think about it
I must thank you for your warning about feeling anxious. As somebody who suffer for anxiety and loves games it's one of the things I can't handle and have to be aware off.
Appreciate your work Splatty, thanks mate.
Splat: so what is Space Beast Terror Fright?
Me: a mouthful
That warning for epilepsy on the main screen really gets the point across! lol
There should be a game reward category for its ability to make you shit your pants, this one would be a nominee for sure.
getting a shot flying up to the ship and after flying away and seeing it explode would be nice
Fantastic gameplay and talk + review.. you made me rediscover it. I played it with 2 friends yesterday for hours...thanks man :D
Have you considered running this in multiplayer with some loyal space marines (fans)?
This game is too intense for me but it definitely delivered on what it set out to do.
We need that in VR. URGENTLY
They might need to rethink some of the bright flashing lights to make this work in VR, but I agree the experience would be terrifyingly awesome
Lol... I initially thought it was Campaign of the "Weak" and thought, "Now THAT's my kind of campaign!"
A note, by default, every time you interact with something the game rolls for a power outage, this is one of the settings that you can change at lobby setup. I believe it's set to a 1/20 chance, with the available range being from 1/4 to 1/60 or turning the system off entirely, there's also an option to have it on a timer with min/max options, both outage methods can be active at the same time.
It's been a couple of years since my last session, so I could be wrong, but that's what I remember.
Splattie has loved Alien/Aliens since he was a kid. Me too but they gave me nightmares.
I wouldn’t play this game alone.
Great game from the look of it.
There's only one problem though and that's that I can see some really terrible dreams in my future after long play sessions...LOL
Thanks for the nightmares Splat...LOL
I like how the gun manages to look like something from halo, doom, and aliens lol
This game looks AWESOME! I am digging this and I really do not like 1st person shooters much anymore (Believe or not, I got burned out on them after DOOM2 [1990s]) but I will play them from time to time.
This is definitely is going my wish list!
"No touchy the alien!".
Commander Shepard would not like that ;-)
it was a mistake watching this as I was going to bed... now i'm twitchy and my wife is going to capitalize on that... thx. 💀😄
21 datacores, 20:47 - You're gonna be sprinting all over that ship like you running from weyland after stealing all of his secret data.
"Game Over, Man! Game Over!" - Pvt Hudson
Looks like a fun throwback to a classic. On the list for later. Gas money more important.
I've become too addicted to roguelites with some kind of meta-progression, because I usually fail early and often. X) Helps it to not feel like a total waste.
I did not even see the xeno's thanks to that muzzle flash.
Others have said it and so will I, this game is INTENSE! I've had it a while and I'm kind of afraid of playing it...
IDK nothing..but even before the 1:00 mark..i was already sold :)
Oh it was a BIG fan's of the Aliens franchise that made this lol. "Space Beast" was a fictional book written by Morse (the only survivor of Fury 161(Alien 3))
I really love the recoil. It seems like it's got some kick to it, but it seems like you have to learn to control it. The game is very immersive, but also a bit simple, and could be refined further.
Ah Splat I'd love to see you steam on Twitch with some other peeps- seems like it could be chaotic fun :D
I'd love for there to be some story to this, because it looks really fun. I'd just like something to latch onto. It wouldn't be hard. Just a narrator telling us stuff about the aliens, the spread of the alien hordes, throw in a few levels that aren't space hulks, a few objectives that are slightly different, and give us an ending. That's it.
only a small number of epileptics are photosensitive, most people with epilepsy could safely enjoy this game
Reminds me of that Jason Momoa movie Debug. Except they're a group of Space inmates who's "community service" is clearing out derelict ships. Low budget film, but I think fun for Sci-fi enthusiasts. ***there is a hint that a "rape" occurs during this move, for peeps who can't handle the thought, just FYI.
That muzzle flash is ridiculous, kinda hurts the eyes
Oh no this game really is hard you get overwhelmed and eaten for sure however i fully approve of this game!
Looks like Space Hulk mixed with Aliens (AvP2 design and graphics) and a few spare parts from Halo weapons. That said, the gameplay looks decent and the design feels more inspired by that stuff than actually ripping it off. Kind of a classic throwback sort of game.
Well this game looks AWESOME.
Thanks for showcasing! ^^
Even as a viewer I got jump scared by the aliens. x)
"Game over man! Game over..." :-D
Damn this game doesn't mess around
This puts the sh*ts at GearBox to shame, a better alien game than Alien!
This is a one man project, too!
Oh man, one of the first games I bought on steam haha
This game looks brutal 🤣
Love playing this game with my friends. Great fun, reminds me of what a Classic Space Hulk game should feel like. Shame that it seems like development for this game frozen. Who knows, maybe there were some major updates since last I played but the game could use some more TLC.
Woohoo, second.
Nice gameplay n love all the indie games u r covering. Found ur channel a few days back, now i have a daily check-in channel. Stay awesome n keep playing.
I've bought so many games because of Splatter! Welcome to the club :)
I think there may actually be a way to fix breaches.... those repair kiosks. Red Computers
I think the muzzle flash isn't filling up the FOV quite enough. You can still see half the screen.
Very interesting I'll have to check for 4 player let's play
The customs maps though haha, 100% Full Mast, hehe
This game still exists? I'm impressed.
@@Dermetsu It is a way of saying it hasn't been forgotten.
Oh god that muzzle flash is too much
i wish it had more of a story type feel
this looks cool, art style reminds me of classic Doom and Duke Nukem 😎 but updated
For something that sounds like a bad translation this looks really good
Splatty got splatted a lot.
Why did you send marines on space hulk?
There are brothers-terminators for sach tasks.
Looks good! Looks like it's doing the anxiety thing too good for me though xD
Looks pretty fun
Game over, man! Game over!
I was asking for this game at one of the last streams, lol)
The game cultivates a landscape of fear.
looks scary and cool
GAME OVER MAN! GAME OVER!
Man, my brother sent me this YEARS ago
Yeah, it's a _very_ multiplayer game, the game's really designed for more than one player ! And the random datacore amount and breaches really dictate a run' success or often inevitable failure.
AvP 1/2 vibes!
space terror beast fright
jesus it is like the hive
You gotta use the laser doors yo
Ha, bought this the other day. Good luck.
