10cc: Dreadlock Holiday 10cc. Wall Street Shuffle 10cc: The Things We Do For Love The band name refers to a metric volume mesurement for engines (10 cubic centimeters).
I was about 4 years old in the UK when I heard this on our little radio on a foggy dreary morning in 1975. Although I didn't understand the song's meaning, I found it melancholic, mesmerising and somewhat like an otherworldly angelic or spirit choir in the background. A very haunting memory of childhood. 52 now and still love it. Be quiet. Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry......
10cc where absolutely brilliant the video behind them was fascinating about creating the sounds especially in 1975 far ahead of all the pop groups at the time.
How do people not get that this song is about coping with societal pressures while being in love? If he shows too much weakness she won't want him. Big boys don't cry. He is trapped in a box.
The entire song's production was built around the towered harmonies - 256 different voices bounced very craftily - to get that "stadium / grand hall" vocal effect. And this was back in the analog days.
He is actually totally in love. He is trying to tell himself that he is not in love. He is trying convince himself that he is not crazy in love with this girl. Yet everything he does in the song shows that he madly in love with this girl.
That’s Gospel About The Secretary Being Used For The Line “Big Boys Don’t Cry! You Want To Watch The Video Of The Making Of This Song It Tells You How They Got That Amazing Sound!
He doesn’t love her. He likes being with her but he won’t commit to her. He would commit to her if he loved her but doesn’t love her, think of it like this, they had a one night stand, and they had an incredible time. She loved it so much that in the back of her mind, she might be in love with him, and when he gets the message, he’s trying to tell her I don’t love you , we’re not lovers. That’s why the lyrics are so cold.
This is my favorite 10cc song! I love it as much today as I did the first time. It's the ultimate denial song. He says he's not in love but, every action says otherwise. The things we do for love is my second favorite song by 10cc.
3:46 “Don’t feel let down… Don’t get hung up… We do what we can… Do what we love…” Those were the lyrics cut from this point in the original version of the song. Too bad. They were beautifully sung and suggested a feeling of helplessness. The song is a true masterpiece of 1970s talent.
Eric Stewart wrote the song after his wife told him he didn't tell her he loved her daily. He said it wouldn't mean as much if he did. He then went on to write this song.
The commenters below have the right take on the true meaning of the songs lyrics. Take it from a seventies white boy that the guy is trying to hide his emotions and love for the lady.
Big fan of 10CC here, so yes please more. Most of their songs have some deeper meaning, sometimes just in a humoristic way, sometimes in a kind of philosopical way, but a lot of time they realy just tell a story, and on occasion based on true events. You should try blackmail, a more humoristic song, about, well a blackmail, but with a plottwist.
Fun fact which has been used in the past in relation to the bands nam. This may be a myth but those of us around in the 70s listening to this band heard the reason for the name was ….. it was 1cubic centimetre more than the average quantity of human male ejaculate. If this is not the case it should be as it has been the backbone of many an anecdote. Have a great day.
He wrote this in reaction to his wife, [ they were together forever ] complained to him that he did not tell her that he loved her enough. As in actions speak louder than words.
He's deluded. He's trying to claim he isn't in love, whilst everything he does shows that he is. Great reaction. Love 10CC, they consisted of 2 great writin partnerships. I'm not in love was by one, but my favourite was by the other. You should try "One Night In Paris". A very different song, but just as smart & clever. Other good songs are: "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" & "Life is a Minestrone" :-)
Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.
I hear it as a heartbreak song. The woman no longer loves him and he's heartbroken along the lines of MacArthur Park. The singer is struggling to contain the pain over his loss. That's why he's crying.
I used to listen to the song in junior high school all the time back in the 70s. Loved it! Still love it. Yeah the whole point of the song is that he's in denial about being in love. It's kind of psychological picture of someone who won't admit they still love someone. About 10cc they were real big in the 70s with this one hit. I don't know any other songs they did that were popular though.
Hope you don't find this too rude but it's said 10cc got their name from Jonathan King who released their first records. King had had a dream about a successful band called "10cc". However, popular belief is that they adopted the name because the average male ejaculation is 9cc and the band was above average with 1cc more than that!
This is a good song but my favorite song of theirs is called "The Things We Do For Love". It sounds like a choir backing him but all it is is the band dubbed over and over again to make 3 or 4 guys sound like hundreds. Oh, he's in love alright. He protests too much not to be :) The "Big Boys don't cry" line was the voice of a secretary from their studio they got to say that line.
Now you HAVE to watch 'The making of 10cc's I'm Not in Love' to find out how 3 guys from the 4 piece band, singing "ahhhhh" became 624 voices for the backing track. At the end you have the full version ( this one has a terrible edit at 4:53) with just a black screen. Best listened to with headphones in a dark room. The bass and the little chimes just before "Sshh, big boys don't cry" (their secretaries voice), takes me back to Cornwall 1983 when I saw them perform this live. The sun was going down and the crowd, in a farmers field, all stood in silence taking in the magical atmospherics. I'll never forget that moment. 🤔
When i heard this song as a kid i didn't know the true meaning of it until i experienced relationships. Now being 52 and listening it and hearing it on movies like G.O.T.G. its adds more meaning to me
I like you and long ago subscribed. Don't ask where The Band's name came from..lol ( look it up haha ) You might be surprised...you WILL be surprised.. TEN C C were 4 Master Musicians who were big in The UK in The 1970's/1980's and all their songs are very different from each other. Their variation was amazing and partly due to having 2 great pairs of songwriting teams in the Group with different styles. The EXTENDED version of this is TWICE as good....:)
"10 cc" is a quite pragmatic name. A founder of the band has found in a study this was the median volume of seminal fluid excreted by males during a romantic intercourse. Ten cubic centimeters.
@@mcasualjacques It was the studio office secretary doing that line. Are you talking about the singer lip-syncing for the video? Because that's not him.
That'll be a great poll..who thinks he's actually in love and who thinks hes really not..an age old agrument that is as old as the song😁..personally I think he is..one of those glass half full or half empty type questions
He's not being 'cold'. He's just trying to play it off as being cool. He loves her.
You are very observant to see the whole point of the song, the fact that he is VERY MUCH IN LOVE! Others didn't seem to get that.
Yup. Pretty obvious, T$.
@@mglaid1989 Exactly! Esp a picture of her hiding a stain lol.
He's in denial. Absolute masterpiece.
Gets me everytime. Everytime.

I am in love, . . . with this song!

Great description Gavin. We would have heard in in mono on the radio and yet it still sounded amazing!
Very mystical and haunting song about a guy that's talking his self out of love so he won't fill the emotiona of love
Subscribed hes in 😍
Excelente! Escuché este tema cantado por Peter Godeno y es igual de genial! Like!
Cute reaction
Oh he’s in love alright 😃. He got it bad 😂😂
Great reaction. Yeah. He in love.
I will never forget when this somg became a hit. This spmg is still epic.
I love this reaction, gorgeous...hehe
One of my favorite songs 🎵
Seven in 75. This song haunts me.
You got it girl👍
10cc where absolutely brilliant the video behind them was fascinating about creating the sounds especially in 1975 far ahead of all the pop groups at the time.
Love this song. Brings back a lot of memories from my past.
Right? I was 13 when this song was released back in 1975. It haunted me then, it haunts me now. If I’m not mistaken there was a 90s remake.
he is very much in love, he is trying to convince himself otherwise, he is as good as cooked. lol.
How do people not get that this song is about coping with societal pressures while being in love? If he shows too much weakness she won't want him. Big boys don't cry. He is trapped in a box.

You explain it better than me. Thanks
Good job, girl! He's so in love he's whipped! And that's the whole point of the song.
Love 10Cc. He is still in love, The song is amazing, listen to how they made that song. You’ll be amazed
What's life, you have everything and you don't have love?
Now you need to hear the uncut album version which is almost twice as long and much better than this edited version!
And where is that version, bro?
He is in love... that’s the point of the song.
She should listen to I'm Mandy Fly Me

It's the ultimate denial song. He says he's not in love but, every action says otherwise.
The things we do for love is my second favorite song by 10cc.
Hello, Tysheen!
Recommendation: "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" - you won't regret reviewing it.
But watch out for the sharks...!
He's not wanting t admit he's in love.
3:46 “Don’t feel let down…

Those were the lyrics cut from this point in the original version of the song. Too bad. They were beautifully sung and suggested a feeling of helplessness. The song is a true masterpiece of 1970s talent.
The song is beautiful. he is in Love , just like I was.
He really is in love. He is trying to talk himself out of being in love.
Great song. Great reaction. ☮️💟
You nailed it. He is very much in love, but he has lost her. So poignant. Heartbreaking.
Eric Stewart wrote the song after his wife told him he didn't tell her he loved her daily. He said it wouldn't mean as much if he did. He then went on to write this song.
Remember this in 1975 when it was released, were deep girls.... how many men have wondered what if ? years later, there is always 1
All of the background voices were actually recorded by each member of the band. No synthesised pads were used.
They did an amazing number of voice overdubs for this One Song!
The commenters below have the right take on the true meaning of the songs lyrics. Take it from a seventies white boy that the guy is trying to hide his emotions and love for the lady.
Hi Tysheen; 10cc Multi tracked Vocal Harmonys, Tracks were Mixed with all hands on deck, this was Hot Analog Recording at it's best.

Rubber bullets and the things we do for love are also good songs.

I agree on he's still in love, and just trying not to be obvious.

Tysheen , your reaction to this beauyiful song is almost as beautiful as the song itself , thankyou

You got it,...a lot of people don't. You could try 'One night in Paris' or 'Goodbye stranger' by 10CC...both are great.
Oh my gosh Tysheen...where have you been all my life?....Love your react.
:)
Exactly. Your first reaction was wrong. He's still so much in love, but trying to tell himself for his own sanity that he isn't.
Love this song
This song teaches a great life lesson, ignore words and actions are truth! He’s so in love he’s afraid!
I hear it as a heartbreak song. The woman no longer loves him and he's heartbroken along the lines of MacArthur Park. The singer is struggling to contain the pain over his loss. That's why he's crying.

Denial ain't some some river in Africa! If you listen closely, he's denying his deepest feelings... "Big Boys Don't Cry"
This is a good song but my favorite song of theirs is called "The Things We Do For Love". There’s a video on UA-cam about the method they used to make the sound of this song .

Love this so much please Daryl Hall stop loving me stop loving you 💖 💗 ❤
Just a cool different song
He is not only in love....he is in denial.
I love this song
He is in love but in denial
He's been hurt and he is tying to protect himself from being hurt again, or from hurting someone else.

His wife complained to him one day that he didn't tell her he loved her enough, so he wrote this song.
He’s lying to himself so as not to get hurt.
He’s in denial... he loves her 😍.. another unusual song of theirs is Donna, haven’t seen a react to that yet
50 Great "Ten c c " Songs and all different :)
back in 76 in sounded even better on an AM radio but youre a cool chick lol
please do . the things we do for love. Song
Typically 10cc I love them so much great reaction thank you💯! To hear an other side of them you could listen to Baron Samedi or Art for Art sake
wow i never knew the woman voice saying "don't cry big boys don't cry" was the singer's voice modified through special effects
Wait, what? It was their receptionist, they dragged her into the studio from the front desk.
@@allenswanson2423 maybe the singer was just mouthing the audio or doing backing vocals
@@mcasualjacques It was the studio office secretary doing that line. Are you talking about the singer lip-syncing for the video? Because that's not him.
@@dggydddy59 ah i like this better, so he was mouthing along or adding his voice to it or whispering very low
I find it Typical the gals 'get' the real meaning of the songs but the boys have no idea hahaha - that he IS in love but is deluding himself
i think he is in love...just trying to hide his feelings he has her picture and wont give it back.

Total denial
Try to catch their spin off group Godley Creme, many amazing songs there too ❤
Looks like he is saying what she told him
You need to react to Steve Holy - Just A Kiss. It's much better than the last song you reacted to by him.
Watch the documentary on this song - ua-cam.com/video/3oxe4mlsQos/v-deo.html
It's a great song but this is edited even shorter than the usual radio version - give the full version a go in your own time, it's a real trip
