    I would recommend going over the verbal statement and action of the umpires to the players and coaches as the play is concluded. Example the fake tags by the fielder at second base...or the catcher blocking home plate without the ball.....

    In case play number 7, if it was 2 outs does the run score? Obstruction before the interference.

    On Case Play #5 (9:17) regarding R1 stealing 2nd and F6 applying a fake tag. The answer is that R1 is awarded 2nd since the fake tag occurred before he had reached 2nd. I have seen fielders slap fake tags on runners *after* they've arrived at the bag, however. If that were the case, would R1 be awarded 3rd? To me, the point of having an infraction for a fake tag is that it could make a runner needlessly slide and perhaps injure himself. But, what if the runner *already* slid into the base on his own accord and *then* the fake tag occurs? No argument can be made that the fielder caused the runner to slide. What then?

    caseplay #3 - you got the correct answer c) in the video, but when you sent the test scores out by email you had c) marked as incorrect and said b) is the correct answer.

      If a runner is not able to complete their awards, a substitute can enter the game and finish legally moving around the bases.

    In the last case play you say the the BR reaches both first and second safely. And then is thrown out at third after obstruction. You say he is awarded first and then any other bases deemed proper. IF he had already reached second base safely wouldn't it be he is awarded at least second and any other bases deemed appropriate?

    • @williamknudson8414
      @williamknudson8414 Рік тому

      It is likely the batter-runner had not even obtained first when the play was killed by F6 maliciously contacting R1, and nearly certain that they had not yet obtained second, so awards are made based on bases legally obtained at the time of the play being called dead. At least, that's my understanding of the situation.

  • @ts4426
    @ts4426 Рік тому

    Case play 3, the umpire deems the runner wouldn't have made it to 2nd base but you said they would award 2nd base bc of the fake tag on a return back to first base. Which is true?

    • @UmpireClassroom
      @UmpireClassroom  Рік тому +1

      Both.
      Remember, NFHS obstruction automatically awards the next base to the runner. So, for this reason, we want to use some judgement in calling obstruction.
      However, judgement does not matter with fake tags. A fake tag is ALWAYS obstruction at the high school level. Because this runner was returning to first, they are by rule awarded the next base, which is second.

    Caseplay #7: apply the same logic as last week; isn't this a case for no-calling the OBS since R2 was not trying to score on an infield ground out, and BR interfered causing an immediate dead ball which would prevent R2 from advancing?
    I get that if you call the OBS then by rule you have to award home... but just last week you strongly advocated "fixing" the NFHS obstruction rule by not calling it when no base award is warranted

    • @UmpireClassroom
      @UmpireClassroom  2 роки тому

      I get what you're saying, but the idea here is more to focus on an umpires understanding of how obstruction rules are enforced, not necessarily judgement of what is obstruction.

    Caseplay #4: support awarding R2 third when the obstruction by F6 clearly had no bearing on the 1-5-3 double play.
    apply the same logic as you applied last week... what was R2 hindered from doing? how was the pattern of play changed?

      We would have to use judgment on this play of course, but remember in OBR, this would be obstruction on a runner that a play is being made on. Which would make it an automatic dead ball and would award R2 third. The difference in high school is we still get the out on the Batter-runner.
      Of course, you mileage on what you may call obstruction may very, but, for this case play, the question is to determine base awards knowledge and automatic v. Delayed dead ball.

      @@loubradshaw3873 E awards R2 third as well. I have A as the correct answer. F6 obstructing R2 as he was already being put out at 3B had no bearing on the play

      @@UmpireClassroom no, this would not be properly ruled type 1 obstruction in OBR. this would be type 2 and the out would stand.

    In case #2 you did not award the runner 3rd base. In case #3 you awarded the runner 2nd base. Both cases involve fake tags which you said in another comment is an automatic base award regardless if the umpire believes the obstructed runner would have advanced to the next base. So I don't understand why the obstructed runner was awarded just 2nd base and not third in case#2 while the obstructed runner in case #3 was awarded 2nd base.

    • @UmpireClassroom
      @UmpireClassroom  Рік тому

      In both cases, the obstructed runner is between first and second. They are always guaranteed one base from their last occupied/legally touched base, which is first base.
