Pierrick really amazing. I'm a character designer and I love animation, and you, my dear, are one of those responsible for that. Your content is really awesome!
Thanks, Pierrick. With each of your rigging or animation tuts I feel myself educated on how to eat spinach, but you explain how to do it the right way - and now it is my favorite food.
This is great! Been trying to make a transition to Blender from Maya recently but was scratching my head trying to transition Richard's space switching workflow for Blender use. This was just what i needed, thanks!
so useful and well taught. i unfortunately have to finish a project, and cannot start immediately. but i am so much looking forward to doing the whole course! i bought it and is sitting on my desktop. thanks.
I'm actually rooting for this course and saving to buy this course even though this course is really cheap compared to many courses I've seen but since I'm from india it's cost pretty much And learning blender and getting to know recently like interpolation curves, dope sheet, drivers, shader nodes, rigging and so much more it's kinda overwhelming All I wanted to do is make a little short film but it seems the process is not easy as it seems and I'm kinda reconsidering learning the blender itself or drop it where I am This kind of thought is really really depressing I don't know what to do I like blender and it's community and I wanted to be a part of them but I'm panicking more and my mind running loose,I'm already stuck in a tutorial cycle and I couldn't able to do anything all I do is delete the default cube Hmm pray for me guys to give me strength,I'm really scared in learning the blender and the progression is really aweful
Dear Jostas and everyone in that situation (me included!) There are serious courses like this one, but the are also very heavy and should be intertwined with small fun projects. Grant Abbit has great courses and projects for beginners and people who are happy doing stuff that doesn't necesarilly need to qualify for a AAA Game. Just enjoy and don't put too much of a burden on yourself. Give yourself time to find "your own way" of doing things. Just watching lessons is not the way, and the lack of results while still busy on the subject creates anxiousness. Lots of love and best of lucks. Looking forward to hearing from your best efforts :-)
Fantastic! I've learned a lot just by watching this sample video. I'm excited learn and improve my 3D animation skills through your new course! Thank you so much for this! I can't wait to start! :)
Thank You for a kind explanation. Great always. :) Also you said always, this method is very handy and useful for many situations. I have to practice it many times with your animation course and contents!!!
Great stuff Pierrick! I'm ordering the course right now :). I guess I know the basics already (I mostly work with mocap for games), but I'm curious about all the tricks you share. I was aware of the space switching, but I have never used it with damped track constraints! And it looks super useful. And the "apply visual transform" trick - wow, that was something I was looking for for a long time :).
An idea for video to further expand on this course - maybe some overview and showcase of useful add-ons? Animation Layers just released V2, Animation Extras seem super useful for both learning and production, etc.
hello, I was following this tutorial, very interesting congratulations, my doubt is that in the end with this method you are left with many keyframes that you do not need.
Honestly I have used similar tricks in motion graphics animations I have made, thougg didn't know it could be done in such an interesting way with character animations as well. I guess I will pick up the course next vacations or something too busy for it atm... Anyways keep doing the awesome work, really respect it mate.
I watched Richard Lico's 2018 Siggraph talk 2 days ago and I was totally blown away with his space switching techniques. This is exactly the reason why I bought Alive. Absolutely worth it. Thank you very much ✨
is there somehting automatic ? so for exmple and it realtime without baking all time ?! mybe that addon to make overlapping there i think 2 addon for blender both free . when go over cours i will see what we can do with thos .
NOTICE- in Your animation tutorial, i noticed you still turn off and on the curves in the graph Editor. by just going to "View" in your graph Editor and ticking the- only selected keyframehandle and only selected curve keyframe, will enable you to click on a channel or curve and display just the curve or channel needed, hope it helps
In Maya, it's under Edit > Keys > Bake Simulation. But it may just be simpler to animate each joint/control or copy the keyframes down the joint/control chain, set the keyframes to cycle in the graph editor if needed, then just manually shift the keyframes on each subsequent joint/control. Constraints aren't needed to achieve this effect.
Hope someone will make an addon to automate some of this, as this technique becomes really tedious when you have a lot of bones... Otherwise great stuff, thanks! I am loving your course so far!
this is a really interesting technique! definitely seems like a lot of repetitive work to get to the end result- seems like an interactive tool could be made in Python to make it more accessible... hmmm.
I've been meaning to find an addon that does this, actually. but searching up "follow through" or "follow up animation addon" doesn't show any results :( I'm glad I'm able to learn it manually though and learned that the term is actually space switching :D
how do you know which constraints to use? You used copy rotation, copy location, copy transform, child of and damped track... do you have to use them all one at a time? Or could you use copy transform/child of for most of the rotation/translation movements. Also, for copy transform constrtains, could you not select both empty and bone and use object to active from the pie menu to snap it to its location, and then apply visual transform? Also, would an addon like wiggle bones work? i dont know how it works fully, but from my experimenting, it seems to do a very similar thing to this, just a little easier, with sliders/values for how much damping, spring, influence, etc etc. if not, this is still a really easy and useful way to get follow through motions... and id assume it would also work for leading animation by offsetting backwards in time instead of forward in time. Super cool 👍
I don't use Blender, but this seems like a lot of complicated steps when you could just animate each joint/control and then shift the keyframes of the next joint/control down the rig? I do this all the time on my rigs in Maya with just setting keyframes on my rigs and then shifting the keframes as I go up the spine, down the arms, etc... No real need for constraining or baking joints to objects and then back to joints again.
Thanks for creating this, I'm from India, want to buy this course but I can't. Is there any possibility you make this course available on Udemy in future? Thanks anyway
It is powerful and also a complicated to prepare but if it is able to make the mecha walk so smooth: It is to learn. Space switching can also be used on other things than walking ? Thank you for this tutorial. However, the price of the space switching course has caused my wallet to have a heart attack.
Pierrick's Art of effective Rigging is the only comprehensive, up to date resource for Blender that I can think of. Sadly most people are satisfied with slapping rigify on any model just to pose it for still shot and never touch it again and as such there aren't many people either knowledgeable enough or otherwise not sharing their knowledge. Pierrick's course however is really good and is considered a part of Blender Bible.
I think this method is too complicated why you don't copy the animation with ctrl +c to another bone and overlap the keyframe? without constraint it's a simple animation..😐
I think you havn't understood the whole benefit of this. How do you get a rotation from a translation? You can't copy the curve from one bone to the other if they don't behave the same or have a connected orientation
