@@OutdoorguruGearReviews you bet. any idea how long the solar component and battery last typically?

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  Рік тому

This is what I wrote in the review on my website: "Where do Garmins battery life numbers and my measurements lead to? Well in the first place I am able to confirm that the minimum of 24 hour battery life with the heart rate monitor on is pretty accurate. In Energy save mode I can only guess. Yes, I tried it but after a while I did not bother looking at the watch anymore and all of a sudden it was empty. 56 days? 60? 50? Don’t know but it was long enough! The fact that the solar panel extends battery life is true without a doubt but in my outdoor life it has not proven efficient and handy enough. And I am hardly in the circumstances that I am off grid and I don’t have the possibility to charge the watch with the USB cable and a wall socket or computer."

Thanks. It's a uniquely comprehensive review. I couldn't get away from the video, even though I have some pressing issues to do. Felt like I would miss an important piece of information if I did. And now that the video ended, I know I was right. Very informative. You've obviously really tried the watch and went through all its features. I have had this watch for over a year, sold it, missed it too much, bought it again and shan't sell ever again. Yet I never knew it had a weather alarm for example, nor had I known the feature of removing hands from the front of the LCD screen for easy reading of what's on it. I especially liked your Machiavellian thinking of contracting the booklet weight by 80%. I never thought of that. I subbed. Hey, doesn't your booklet include Arabic among the languages? Mine does in both times I bought this one of which was from the USA.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews

    Great video, very nice footage!
I've worn this watch every single day for a year now. Its been great. Minor scuffing but that just adds character. Held its charge with normal use and its still on time to the second. A regular watch would look really bad by now, cracked glass, scratched up metal etc.
To the average person this may not a practical watch more of an aesthetical choice. Most functions are already in your smartphone and simple things like the timer and alarm are sort of a chore to get to because of how you have to unscrew the red crank to manipulate them. I got used to that however and its no big deal.
For me, as a hunter and outdoorsman I find some features pretty useful.
The compass is usefull. I can tell where to set up my tent or which way and animal is headed. Probably navigate aswell but I never needed to. Just make sure you recalibrate every now and then because the magnetic fields you expose the watch to if you wear it every day can throw it off a bit.
The thermometer is very useful for telling water temperature and unlike room temperature it picks that up very fast even on your wrist.
Altimeter isnt really useful to me, however the barometer has been useful on occation.
The light is exceptionally strong for a watch. In pitch black its been enough to navigate my kids legos or find something around the tent.
Wearing this huge piece every day, I sort of got used to its size and weight. However the back of my hand develope callous from touching the watch every time I bent my wrist to a 90 degree angle. I usually wear it 24/7 though, I'm surr that could have been avoided.
Make sure you remove and clean the band regularily as it tends to collect alot of gunk in the spaces under the "flaps".
I'd give it a 9/10 thus far. Intially it would have been lower but its been good to me once getting used to the quirks.

Excellent detailed review! The only correction I would make would be the radio control doesn’t update every 5 hours as you mention, since the very low frequency signal propagates long distances only at night. Casio designed all of their RC watches to check for a time calibration signal for the 5 hours between 12am and 5am, on every hour 12am1, 2, etc so it checks up to 6 times to try and get a sync. If it gets a signal at say 1am and syncs, it shuts the radio off to save battery life. It will start the process again every night.

A cool thing about the thermometer is that you can calibrate it so it adjusts to your body temperature. So if it averages say 10° warmer than the actual temperature outside, you can reduce the temp by 10 and then it will give you a more accurate reading. Obviously when your body warms up and sweats it will throw it off a bit, but the possibility to get closer to the actual outside temperature while wearing the watch is definitely there! This functionality is also built into the altimeter, you can measure the pressure and offset it depending on where you are and what the weather is like, though this is much more difficult to maintain since pressure can change so quickly. Great review by the way!

Great review! Thanks for taking the effort. New subscriber :) I have a general question. Even though some products being sold in a shop are ‘ethical’, the shop itself might not be. How do we know? How do you choose where to buy gear from?
    My opinion on such watches:
Short version: how do you replace the functions of this watch, with accurate and better gear. Ie a Compass,Altimeter,Barometer,Timer etc etc and at what cost/ weight sacrifice? A Garmin handheld?
    Long version:
Most of the functionality of this watch is totally useless. More to the point, even without all of these generally inaccurate functions, who requires a massive clock on their wrist, when a mobile phone with apps and an external battery pack, would be a far better option for functionality? I think too many people buy such items because they imagine (the design implies this) they bring them a little closer to being like a Special Forces operative. They don’t wear Casio Mudmasters or if they do, it’s not while on operations because these watches are most often not ‘Milspec’. So the whole design notion is fake.
However, in order to accurately substitute such a device with actual devices means carrying more gear. I’d argue in favour of more gear rather than inaccurate monitoring and measuring. Even a second hand smart phone in a touch case and screen protector would be cheaper and better than this watch.
Besides this, on a personal note, I find having anything on my wrist obstructs movement and often makes wearing some items of clothing uncomfortable.
    Just my opinion.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  2 роки тому

      Thank for subscribing!
      1) You can't. I buy at shops that employ likable and knowledgable people. Online I look at the about page and the sustainablility page.
      2) I use a lot of the functionality. But this one is heavy and big on my wrist. I wear and test a Garmin Instinct at the moment: super watch, smaller en lighter.
      3) Wearing can be uncomfy. Agreed. Buy an alti/barometer that is not a watch. They do excist.
Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

    Hi Guru,
first of all, happy new year :)
Thanks for the nice review. Checking these kind of watches now for weeks but just cant decide. I like this watch but there are better ones? I would need one with ABC, Solar and it has to be so tough like this one. Basicly a watch where you get dropped out in Siberia and the watch would offer you everything you need und survive all the hits and stuff. GWG 1000 1A3ER is realy one of my absolute favorites, but which one would be even better in your opinion, offering exactly the same like this watch and even more?!
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
    Greetings from Berlin :)

      Hi Erayza,
      Thank you and U2!
Super question, tuff answer. I did not test all the watches in the world. I am reviewing a couple of Garmins at the moment and in some respect they are better but on the solar part... Casio is a winner. I know I would not buy the Polar X Grit I reviewed and do know I love my Suunto better than the Casio but is has no solar so it will need to be charged once in a while.
Question for you: what kind of outdoor guy (or girl, new name to me 😊) are you? What type of adventures?
You can share it by email at info@outdoorguru.com if you don't want this public.

Yeah, I red good things about the Suunto but also that few customers were complaying that the bracelet broke :/
I would lave to have solar, better to never charge^^. Its a very important option for me. But I want it at the same time to look good and have god features. I would use it more for hiking in the mountains, hunting and mountain biking.
Just dont know if the Mudman is too big, so a jacket or lang shirt would be unfonfy to wear.
Also want a good readability of the display or numbers and a nice ilumination or light for night.
Crazy tuff decision for me, cause I dont want to spend money on few watches. I want one nice one which I can use for many years and which will offer me absolutely everything I need.

If you have trouble seeing the small LCD display for ALT or BAR measurements, for a quick reading while you're in either mode, you can press the top left button of the watch, and the second hand will sweep to a value on the watch face, so that you can see the change in pressure, or altitude, since the last reading, in either +/-1 increments to +/-10 or +/-10 increments to +/-100 values depending on how you decided have that function configured.
