  • Jupiter's Legacy marks Netflix's first foray into the comic book properties acquired from Millerworld. With two stories running parallel, one in the 1930's and the other modern day it explores the concept of, what if Super Heroes but ethics and real world and also consequences or whatever. Anyways this is out review, thanks for the support!

@@ancientaxolotl1654 idk about the whole show, I liked the fact that it left you wanting more each time it finished the 30s scenes I think they probably just should’ve left the modern day stuff to a cliff hanger, because it felt rather weird to have everything wrap up neatly. But you gotta remember these shows probably have to have this stuff for studio mandates, since they don’t think viewers would want a show set in the 30s entirely

These shows if you take the time to dive deeper are very different and you can see it if you know where to look
      1. This show is basically the superhero equivalent to politics just like Star Wars
      2. The characters here are all superhuman, at least the heroes, the characters invincible such as invincible himself is part alien, while the character in this show is human with gained powers
3.This shows early on that it wants to take a more realistic approach on our real world and a more old comic book style approach to the superhero’s fights and scenes with there powers.
This show feels a lot more like the boys if anything

The Utopian seemed so inflexible and such a bad father and leader (he didn't know the real names of some of the people on his own team, including his son's best friend, he didn't know his son was the godfather to his friend's daughters, he barely seemed to register the deaths except as "fallen soldiers") to me that it harmed my suspension of disbelief.
One interpretation I had was that the older characters had grown up during/after World War 1 and some of them at least had picked up a pacifist mentality which was relatively common in the 1920s/30s. But they never really say that, and thinking about it, they brought guns on the expedition, which doesn't really fit with that. I think it's more likely that it was just, as you say, a transposition of the trope of Superman and Batman never/rarely killing, which a lot of other superheroes don't really adhere to (if you look at the MCU, many of the heroes there kill people left right and centre).

I felt like Brandon's first scene (sitting incognito in the diner in a hoodie, going and fighting the bank-robbing supervillain alone) set him up as a more dark and rebellious character, but then afterwards he feels very focused on trying to live up to Sheldon's expectations, in contrast to Chloe. It feels like any guilt or conflict over him killing Blackstar('s clone) gets brushed aside by all the repetitive arguing about "the Code". There could have been a more interesting story/debate there e.g. his killing of Blackstar being "justified" along the lines of a police sniper shooting dead a bomber or school shooter but indiscriminate killing of supervillains in the vein of real-life police brutality not being justifiable, as opposed to "HE BROKE THE CODE!" "THE CODE IS BAD!" "NO IT ISN'T!" "YES IT IS!".

Most of her character just seem wasted being a junkie when she could have been an anti-hero or an actual person than a boring loss cannon. Sheldon didn't tackle family problems and became more of the alterego than who he was like Bruce Wayne being Batman's alterego thing. Brandon seemed more interesting but that way just that edgy I wanna live up to something deal than actual interesting character. He just seems like a duller version of Utopian after ep2, like one day he was like yh I agree with ma dad's code even though my friends keep dying my fam don't care.
Utopian doesn't have an opinion that doesn't fall in line with his superhero self. He just seems cold, too much alterego not much Sheldon. His wife seems the same and lack her own character just as much in light of a code they follow jeopardising their followers and only switches cuz she realises she's costing people lives but only cared when someone that was closer died spewing they didn't break no code. It just feel like moral high ground that's cost is lives than solving problems.

One thing that really bothered me was Grace and Sheldon and everyone keeps saying "How hard it was to get their powers" and "How much we sacrificed to get the powers". What exactly did they sacrifice?? After Walt and Sheldon's dad died, nobody of the 6 had anything left lose. Grace was fired, the factory worker was fired, Walt and Sheldon lost the factory, George lost his fortune, Richard Conrad lost his entire ship. This is unrelated to the "sacrifices they made on the island" which was what, having to get along? Not murdering each other? Also the scene where Walt, George and Sheldon have to "forgive" each other by looking at one another for 10 seconds was 1) incredibly dumb 2) wasn't even true! Walt still resents Sheldon and Sheldon still doesn't listen to anyone after it.
The writers just feel like they have something to say about superheroes in the present (but never quite get there) and keep cutting to this adventure story with no deeper meaning whatsoever. I'm just not sure what the point of all of this was.

The flashbacks were more interesting than the present and it’s clear why. Imagine if they told the the Civil War story to kick off the MCU with cuts back to Iron Man and First Avenger while Cap and Tony were arguing. We’re obviously going to care less about the characters if we haven’t seen them develop. We need to see who they are and how they got there to care about where they’re going. This should have been two seasons or one longer season told chronologically. It would make all the twists more engaging and less flat if we actually cared about the Walt-Sheldon-George dynamic before we knew it broke. Such a weird film making choice.

Sheldon is driving me crazy. The villain seemed clear from the beginning. The point was how they use their powers. Walter always showing opposing opinion to Sheldon. It’s clear Walter is biding his time. Brainwave and Chloe are interesting too. Less so than George and his son. They need more time to cook. Walter was odd and seemed switched because of plot with nuggets of why. He’s portrayed always as a really cocky dude. He also has a deep mistrust of his brother. He blaming Sheldon for the company demise and father’s death. Sky fox’s son is building a machine to get to his father. His staff can’t get him to his dad. It always teleports to a house of ill repute. Probably a joke by Walter. Hutch that’s his name. Hutch’s staff may be alien tech due to his father’s ability coming from Jupiter. I think they will have Hutch find Skyfox’s mind prison. Hutch is going save the world from the autocratic Walter. Walter may have good intentions but power will corrupt. He will realize after killing Sheldon and his wife that his balance is gone. The super kids will be split between Chloe’s rebellion and Walter’s regime.

I don't even thing those shows gave this a high bar. If certain elements were better this would have been a better show. The past was great, certain elements of the code was good like how it created friction but the code it self was bad and no one cared outside of the young heroes at the deaths they were suffering.
Utopian and his wife had a strong code bordering on moral high ground, they didn't have good relationships with their kids like not being actual parents but superheroes. Chloe was a mess and revealed Utopians contradictions but those scenes had no impact on him, Chloe's character was a mix bag of uninteresting tropes, if certain parts of her were handles better she'd be the most interesting of that family. Brandon was bland and just wanted to be his dad or get his recognition, he hardly has his own identity. Only the twist and 1929 stuff was interesting but they killed a character for no reason at the end so made it kinda boring.

    **SPOILERS**
    *
    *
I've never read the comics, but I worked out that it was Walter who was the real villain from, like, episode two? I felt it was really obvious. Quite apart from the Loki-energy that the actor was exuding all over the place, there was just this kind of disconnect between his 1930s self who was this insecure control freak and then the modern version who somehow seems really laidback and sure of himself. And that made something twig for me: the only reason he would be acting like that in the modern day, where everything seems to be spiralling out of control, is if, actually he *has* everything under control and things are working out just as he wanted while they're going to cr*p for everyone else. Then Sheldon made a big deal about how Walter can't read his mind, and we know from ep. one that actually Walter CAN read Sheldon's mind - we 'hear' him hearing Sheldon's thoughts about how 'Brandon isn't ready' etc. And finally, we can see in the 1930s that if only one of Walter or George is going to go supervillain? It's CLEARLY going to be Walter. So I just felt like, clearly Walter messed with Sheldon's head to turn him against George out of spite, jealousy etc. and George was probably a good guy all along. I still liked it, though.

How fitting that the name of the episode is "what's the use?"
Kinda my thoughts but I don't hate it as much as a lot of people. It's still not really good.

I had to force myself through some episodes honestly, Some episodes were just the right amount of middling average to annoy you.

Should’ve just been about the 1920s storyline, was way more interested with that any of the present day scene

I found the 30's story line way more interesting than the modern day stuff. The makeup and hair is awful. If you paid attention to the first episode then the twist at at end wasn't a surprise. The show overall was ok.

The flashbacks were the only good part of the show. I honestly would rather watch a series all about them starting out as superheroes. It'd be like the CW shows but with decent writing.

Ohhhhh I think I finally heard what Nick often says at the end of these videos: is it 'guys go grab that gem'? I still don't know what that means but I'm glad I know what words he's saying.

Yeah almost certain that’s correct as grab that gym or Jim would make even less sense. My new theory is it’s some reference to the infinity stones as his avatar is wearing the infinity gauntlet, but I’m probably way off.

Its kinda sad that the show got pulled down from awful effects, direction and design... after the boys, doom patrol and umbrella academy there's no excuse for that early cw aesthetics...

It may be because I've watched them in such close proximity, but I feel like Jupiter's Legacy makes for a good companion series to Invincible. Because if you boil it down to the bare essentials, they have the same premise: "what if Superman was my (bad) dad?" But what's interesting is they take completely opposite approaches.
    ***SPOILERS for Invincible***
The Utopian has this honorable code he upholds over all else. Never kill, and never interfere with human affairs, since it would be unfair and we need to let the Earth make its own decisions. Omni-Man, however, we find out is something of an asshole. He believes (as an extension of his people's philosophy) that humans are too tiny and stupid to act in their own self interest and be allowed to govern themselves. It would be better for them long term if some super beings came along took away their freedom.
And in both series, it's the actions of their sons that pulls them a little closer to center on their ideals and that conflict is a big plot point for their characters.

All I want to know is, if they got the suits back in the 20s how did they stay clean and in one piece? Like at some point surely they'd have been torn or ruined, are the suits magic too?
