EGO Snow Blower round 2

  • After getting feedback on my last video. I decided to make another as some of the questions raised I had myself. This video has also been minimally edited or sped up so you can see in Realtime how the Ego functions. This was a light fluffy snow. About 7 inches and then at the end of the driveway it was around 11-12 inches. More so towards my mailbox.
I have to say being a Honda owner for many years now as well as having a now blower over 25 years old. I still love Honda. They just work! You can’t kill the motors in them. However after 25 years the maintenance on it became extensive. Every year we were spending 5-800 dollars on replacing something. This year the Auger went and it was 1200 just for parts. I do plan on keeping and fixing it.
But the fact an electric can hold up to its performance. The EGO SNT 2400 ran way better than expected. While a battery overheat was disappointing at first. The fact someone was able to advise me that there was a better way to run the machine. Only to find that not only were they right. But I was able to do an 8 car driveway on one charge and then some.
EGO has been a batch of products that I now hope to make part of a regular line up. The fact that I have a Tesla battery back up to power them. In a storm I won’t have to weight whether I will use the gas I have to clear the snow in case of emergency or run a generator. Which I barely even need now.
It looks like the future is electric and I no longer think that’s a bad thing. I hope the electric battery’s as well as electronic components hold up to the test of time.

FINALLY! Someone who knows how to use the chute! All the other videos I have watched, kept it shooting straight up in the air. Not only do you get a face full of blowing snow, you blow into the neighbor's. You'd get more battery time if you leave your lights off. You had them on.
Everyone has their own way of doing their driveway but, I prefer to go straight down the middle, chute pointed to my right, turn blower left to come back, keeping the chute as is, working from the center out on each side without having to turn the chute each time. Just making a circle from the middle starting point, wider and wider till done.

Totally agree with you. the first storm i used it we had 10" of snow with a layer of slush at the bottom. I had it on Turbo the entire time and the batteries died very quickly (15-20 min). I was disappointed. The second storm, just a couple of days later, i realized i could simply run the auger at Eco or medium speed and it was just as good, but with 3x the run-time. Now i'm much happier with it! I will reserve Turbo mode for especially difficult areas, but that's it. That seems to be what really depletes the batteries.

    • @heidiwilks5316
      @heidiwilks5316 3 роки тому +5

Same. Keeping it in turbo will also cause the machine to shut down after awhile even with charge left in the batteries just to keep them from overheating, so I rarely use turbo now.
Also, turning on the lights prior to turning on the machine is what causes the batteries to flash red -- they still have their charge and the machine will still work. Just make sure to start the machine before turning on the lights and you'll see the familiar reassuring green glow :)

Agreed! I didn’t notice much of a difference at the lower levels. But the turbo really helps in the thick areas the snow plow leaves behind.

@@dissectingdiy This is such an important point that i would have thought Ego would have mentioned it in the manual, to be honest. I think a lot of people are going to run it on Turbo and then return it immediately for "batteries don't last long enough" not realizing how powerful Eco mode is for the auger.

Just watched 12/22/20. I can see some advantages, personally I'll keep my gas snowblower. I found that not taking full bites depending on how much and if its wet or dry snow, you won't leave stripes. But glad you like the EGO. God Bless.

Thanks for the review. I just tried my unit for the first time and was ready to return it. We were running it on turbo and the batteries started flashing red and it wouldn't run. Makes sense now that I understand the batteries were overheated. I will run it on medium next time and see how it goes. It seems like medium should throw the snow plenty far. One problem I still have is my chute does not stay where I put it. its very very loose and the snow flying through it will instantly swing it all the way to the right if I let it go. I read a response from the manufacturer that there is a self install kit available to fix it. I would return it due to the chute issue if no fix since that is unacceptable. The only thing missing compared to a gas model is hand warmers.

Thats the same reason I havent gone to battery yard equipment. The batteries are to expensive. I figured out for what I spend on gas mowing my yard that one of the Toro mower batteries would need to last me 13 years or more. And for a snow blower theyd have to last even longer. And as far as I know these batteries are good for maybe 5 years if your lucky.

The EGO line isnt really that cost effective. Some are buying tool only units since the batteries work across the platform. The biggest draw to EGO for some is convenience and not having to maintain small engines. It's not for everyone.

They last pretty long already. You just have extra batteries and swap. No difference from keeping a gas can of gas. I have lots of m18 and m12 tools and have many batteries. Rapid charger station charges 3 batteries at a time quickly. If milwaukee comes out with a 2 stage snowblower on their mx battery platform, it will last a long time. My older Core 20v (18v) cordless lawn tools last as long as a tank of gas anyway already and using with my m18 with an adapter on them they last even longer.

batteries are never going to beat out gas for run time. you can simply store a LOT more energy in a fuel that consumes itself when giving back the energy than a battery. Not sure what your expectations of a "perfected" battery are.

Ugh I want SNOW!! I hate the putsy little 2-4" we're getting. I ended up removing some plow piles today out of boredom with the SNT2400 and it's an absolute BEAST. The only thing that would make it better would be a track drive and possibly using 4-6 batteries or a corded adapter.

  • @jdesmo1

A corded version of a 2 stage electric like this would be perfect (for me), and also much cheaper to purchase than this.

@@tjlovesrachel i love hypotheticals so bear with me! I would imagine in such a scenario. I would be going nowhere. However, I am sure local emergency services, DPW, would through rationing have an ability to clear roads at a reduced interval, get me ambulance, and having a driveway cleared would be good. If not having a solar panel to recharge these batteries like with the nexus. Travel would still be needed and a snow blower making pathways for walking would be seen as a huge life saver. Also if rationing ever happened. Maybe many of us work from home and conserve. Lawn care could be frowned upon unless of course you have electric. Things I didn’t think much about until 2020.
