The Baltic tribes were the last in Europe to be converted to Christianity, and indeed there is still quite a big pagan influence passed on from ancient traditions. It is not as common to see it in everyday life anymore due to globalization, but through traditions and special celebrations a strong bond with nature is still maintained. As you already touched upon in the translated description on the video, this song is praising Oak trees. They are a symbol of masculinity and hold a very special meaning in Latvian/Baltic folklore.

This was a nice video :) The song is a midsummer solstice song. Traditionally people wear flower and oak leaf crowns on midsummer. We light boniferes and stay awake all night. Folk groups in the video are wearing traditional folk costumes. Two are from later centuries, like 13, 14. Others typical for various regions in Latvia from ~ 18/19 century. The song basically says that we come together to celebrate midsummer and honor god Jānis.

They mostly come from different regions of latvia. Oh fun fact this song is not sung entirely in latvian but in two languages, the second is latgalian which is my native language in the region latgale, it is in the part where people ar mostly with the blue clothes, you can hear as they pronounce the repeating phrase "Līgo" differently.

My next door neighbor was from Latvia. I did not learn much about her culture at the time but learned that her husband Ervalds (Eric) was a forester before the nazis arrived. I went to her husband's funeral. It was a Lutheran funeral. My neighbor told me "We don't have funerals like this in Latvia. I did not know what she meant until I first heard Latvian music.

People singing are in folk costumes from different periods of time and different regions. Guys playing instruments have a bit more modernised version of a folk costume.

Paldies! Indeed Magical! Latvian music makes my soul soar! ❤‍🔥 The drum is a hollowed Oak tree. The outfits are representative of different tribes. In 1200 the Latvian tribal areas were Latgalian, Curonian, Semigallian, Selonian, and Livonian. Our history is extraordinarily complex!
