    Our differences are only a big deal when people make them a big deal. Unfortunately, people default to making a big deal rather than embracing and appreciating differences. If we embrace others, we could actually learn something. Brother I'm glad to know you worked through you language insecurities. Your work has brought this gift to us and I truly appreciate you for it. "Hablo como hablo" ¡Me encanta!

    On my Puerto Rican side of the family they talk about that all the time where when you speak Spanish they can tell that you're not from the island. It's a common thing

    P.S I’m just me too 😅 My Spanish accent doesn’t define me. I can’t master the Puerto Rican accent, so I try to just speak as properly as I can. Understanding the accent is more important to me. Some Spanish speakers from other countries say I sound like a professor 😭 I guess that’s good since I’m told by English speakers that I speak very formally and proper (it’s just how I grew up as a native English speaker I guess 🤷🏾‍♀️)

    Rocky has the Dominican twang and the boricua twang, too! I totally hear it.
    Sort of related, what I notice a lot with bilingual people who grow up with both languages is that the accents and languages blend. Or sometimes, one accent predominates the other. My kid, for example, is catching a strong Spanish accent with his English, but learns it only from his Texas daddy. He prefers the Spanish, but speaks both. We are doing the split learning technique. I think accents are truly arbitrary, but I would like to dive more into this.
    There's a funny video online of one of the former presidents of Spain catching accents based on the places he visits, and it's hysterical 😅 He's totally unaware of it, too.
    Anyway, keep up the good content. Great stuff! 🇵🇷🙏🇵🇷¡Wepa!

    My second generation Mexican friends in America get criticized and made fun of for how they speak Spanish when visiting family in Mexico. Your way of teaching is so refreshing and real! Puerto Rican and Mexican music is different too. I would like to know Spanish just hear what is being expressed. Love of course! Thank you.

    I enjoyed this video! I’m African American and Spanish is my favorite language. I’ve loved it since I was a little girl so I’ve been studying it for some time. Mi cuñado is Mexican so I’ve learned even more Spanish from being around my sister’s in-laws. Not only that, but I live in the heart of Pilsen which is a Mexican community in Chicago. I would say that I’m accepted in this community. I have been asked if I’m Dominican because of my accent. I have adjusted to Mexican Spanish well, but I would like to learn the dialects of other countries as well.

    I love your videos and your attitude especially!! I can't believe that you get everything! It's so helpful to learn from you! The embarrassment of making mistakes holds me back. (which is crazy!) I always find some people are kinder, and others call you out on it right in front of other people. (act like they don't understand) I think women are difficult. Sometimes it feels like I have to prove something to be worthy of speaking in their language. That's troubling for me because I've always wanted to fit in! And I work hard for that! I am an ESL teacher so that makes no sense to me. So I appreciate your humor and insight! When my Mexican family (thru marriage) or my Russian relatives make mistakes in English it doesn't bother them. They just talk! I think that "fear" or perfection thing is in some of us too! That's how they tell where we're born! Your accent is so perfect. I'm sure there's many people who can't guess where you're from! It's just you think they do! Keep making videos! You're a natural teacher! THANK YOU!!! I'd write in Spanish but then you would know where I'm from !!!

    i'm learning and i'm at still what i feel is very basic level, but i've hit the point where, say, on an online game i can go for a few minutes without having to stop and ask for clarification or not need to stop to think of a word, and people have started guessing where i'm from based on accent or vocab. it's always funny and gratifying when they ask me if i'm mexican or spanish or colombian, real evidence of the influence of my friends. my spanish is a frankenstein mishmash and i'm happy with that! every bit of out of very niche vocab or quirk of accent is a mark of time spent with cool people.

    Oh my gosh thank u so much because i stuggle with this too alot. Also i have a band where they are from different countries too. One from the dominican republic, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, and Puerto rico. They talk about how they know they sound like a mix of different accents. And how it can be really tricky for their family and other people to understand them, Because of them being together all the time for so long. But i love how they sound. And they got to learn about each others different cultures. 🎉🎉🎉😊

    Puedo un preguntar ?.. what accent does a native Spanish speaker have when they speak English ?

    • @lokienvy
      @lokienvy Рік тому +1

      Depends where they're from. Someone who speaks Mexican Spanish will have a slightly different accent from someone who speaks Chilean Spanish when they speak English. Dr Eric Singer is a linguist who works as a therapist and dialect coach has a video on YT where he points out the difference (he's talking about Gus Fring in Breaking Bad).

    • @breakena
      @breakena Рік тому +1

      @@lokienvy here is the thing when I am learning Spanish I am told to try and acquire an accent and I find it strange that native Spanish speakers still have their strong natural accent

    • @lokienvy
      @lokienvy Рік тому

      @@breakena i mean, it makes you sound more natural and easier to understand if you have a specific accent in Spanish. There is nothing wrong with having a neutral accent, imo, it just sounds jarring to a native speaker. Hard to explain. Like the movie The Expendable, the Hispanic military guy spoke Spanish but it was so weird and stiff, no accent and the wording made him sound like his lines were written in English and put through an electronic translator. You can understand him but it just sounds "off" to Native speakers.

    • @breakena
      @breakena Рік тому

      @@lokienvy thanks ……I have a better understanding now thanks for the explanation .. what accent do you think is easier to acquire ..

    • @lokienvy
      @lokienvy Рік тому +1

      @@breakena No problem. I think that is a matter of personal preference and skill. I would say the accent of the Native Spanish speakers you are closest to? Or the materials you have access to (like shows and podcasts and music). I am Dominican, so if you are in NYC, that might be easy to pick up on because there are lots of us in that area of the USA. If you're in SoCal, a Mexican accent; Florida, Cuban. Europe, Andalusian Spanish. etc etc. But, again, it's all up to you.

    It was so helpful! I grew up with PR parents that spoke to me in English and Spanish but predominantly English. I'm the oldest sibling so as my parents had more children it kind of went to straight English. My Spanish is intermediate but I only know the PR accent so I pronounce words as such when I speak. But I work with 2 girls from Ecuador who speak no English, when I speak to them I speak very proper (enunciating my "s" and "r") because I don't want to mess up! Which I do (a lot) and they help me finish my sentence if I can't think of the word. I also help them learn English words too. It's a win win!

    Por mi parte (si a vos te importa) soy Argentina estadounidense de 1a generación.
    Cuando era yo mina - asistí una clase de español p un par de meses - pero el problema es q los maestros solo saben conjugarse y cosas así - no se saben conversar como seres humanos.
    Es p esa razón q cambié al italiano en colegio - pero en la uni - SIEMPRE los profes me decían q fuera IMPRESCINDIBLE q yo aprendiera a hablar de una manera más neutral

    I can relate to some Puerto Ricans thinking I sound Dominican and Dominicans thinking I sound Puerto Rican. lol For the most part, people see that I speak like a Puerto Rican. I kinda just stopped caring how people think I sound and overtime I started sounding more like a boricua. Sin embargo, lo que sí me molesta un poco es cuando una persona me dice que soy dominicano o aspirante a dominicano, porque no lo soy. I don’t claim that or pretend to be that.
