That's one reason why redistributing income to workers, say in the form of higher minimum wages, will stimulate the economy because they will spend whatever they get. If the lower wage jobs were viable we would see far less of this sort of crime. That's why crime shot up when the manufacturing went overseas along with good but accessible jobs.

I had this happen to a friend of mine. They just dug around the kitchen area. A lot of people have car keys hanging on a cupboard or on the kitchen counter.
And if everyone is upstairs they have 1 minute to dig around and hit the garage right next to the kitchen and go with the stolen car
It’s called a “inside job” my friend. These days you have to be soo careful who you let into your home: especially on a regular basis: maids, cleaning services, teenage friends of your children, adults you invite to a party at your house: someone who had been invited into that home before likely knew that he kept the keys to the luxury vehicles in that office room and that person passed the info on to the perpetrators.

Even accidentally left my equipment shed door wide open the whole time filled with blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, gas concrete saw, couple of 1" tire guns, & a lot more. I live in town so it was in full view of lots of people yet nothing was touched (one of my cats escaped right as I was locking up the house - forgot to lock everything up in the panic).
Also, I have a lot of packages delivered here including at least a dozen guitars, often clearly marked Epiphone or Gibson. Sat on my front porch the entire day, still there when I got home. Never had a package stolen from anywhere I've lived since I escaped Illinois. So yes, there are still decent places to live even today. As a bonus, I get to look at birds, deer, turkeys and squirrels that hang out in my back yard.

Many people leave their keys on a hook by their main entrance, often the front door. My keys are always in my bedroom, and if I am not driving a certain vehicle (I have two), or am out on foot or cycling, my keys are locked in my safe.

Oh wow, this house is in my hometown of Winnetka. I pray and hope that the residents in my hometown would be okay. Those criminals are starting to go the suburbs as well. I love living in the Indiana Dunes because the residents would look out for you and give you a warning because they're all scrapped. At one point Witnekka Illinois was the most affluent suburb in the US. I had a really good friend of mine from Marquette University in Wisconsin who was raised there and she looked like a young Julia Roberts and extremely smart. Well, we must come to an understanding that these individuals are financially challenged. They probably grew up in poverty, which is the true cause of crime. Not character. So they must do these crimes to keep afloat in today’s world. I’m surprised that the homeowner wasn’t arrested for trying to stop this robbery. He should’ve told them in a soft voice to stop. And after the robbery was committed, call law enforcement. And asked if he was going to like to press charges, the homeowner should’ve stated that out of respect for the criminals and their financial circumstances he was declining.

So a gun is of no value if your aim is poor. This individual put himself and his well-being, and the protection of his family on the line, and he did that because he had a gun.
So think about if he had not had that gun, and simply picked up the phone, and called the police. It is possible that the police may have in fact apprehended these morons, but because he had a gun, and went outside, and confronted them, he could’ve gotten himself killed, leaving his family vulnerable, because he would not have been there to protect them.
The other thing is, firing a weapon, because someone is trying to steal your property, even breaking into your home, could land you in front of a judge, and or a jury, because deadly force could be determined to be unjustified in such a case.
So be careful, when using your firearm, know your rights under the laws of your state, because property can be replaced, but life cannot, and so don’t take the law in your own hands, call the police because that’s what you pay them to do, enforce the law.
