The AI personality was a great call. The crew is supplying enough angst. A seemingly fun AI shifts the tone. As a bonus, pleasant psychopaths are much scarier as they reveal themselves! (Norman Bates, The Ice Truck Killer from Dexter, Any version of The Joker)!
My sense of the AI is that it's playful with the same way a cat is playful with its prey. That tone is almost--if not outright--more terrifying than overt hostility.
I think it depends on the session 0 and the vibe. My first long-form campaign started fun, ended serious, and looking back, I think I'd have much preferred to keep it light and silly for them -- but that was the party I was working with. We'll see how they respond to your "evil" or EVIL AI ...
How NOT to GM: don't give your players a Ghost in the Machine, then base your plot on them obtaining info on a name in the system AND don't prompt them with a message that contaminates an admiral's systems!
I would watch an official Star Trek series with this crew. So much fun to watch!

Great episode, thanks!

I thought the AI was pretty ominous, sense of humor or not.
(I've been watching the game live on twitch, so catching up on your commentary sections now).
