My understanding was that the study wasn't so much wrong as it was being interpreted incorrectly since it was about wolves in captivity, not in the wild. Wild wolf packs just sort of consist of families with the father and mother acting as the sort of "alpha and beta" leading the children. But in captivity, it's more about which wolf is the most physically dominant since they're basically stuck in there together like a prison forced to compete over food and territory instead of roaming freely. It was a behavior that was the result of their captivity, not something you'd observe out in the wild.

Tbf (even though I fully agree with you) there's also the question of who wrote the book the term comes from, and what zoo were they at. Meta jokes start to become real mucky when we start asking for irl scientist sources. I mean, evolution literally doesn't exist in dnd. Gods are real, and made everyone personally. Even the tabaxi/catfolk who seem like they evolved form cats, didn't. Also, the world isn't round, outer space doesn't exist, and there are no laws of physics. So like 90% of the meta bs we try and bring into the world, like "my level 20 artificer would absolutely be able to build a thermo-nuclear missile" doesn't work, cause none of the science behind it exists in their world. (you can't split the atom when atoms don't exit. Just something silly like tiny gremlins, or pixie dust)
Matt seems so personally offended by the concept of alphas but I felt Chetney’s specific philosophy on it was actually very motivational. He’s not trying to say he’s a sole leader by blood right. Just that anyone can be if they step up and see it, and he wasn’t super toxic about it either.
I'm going to get hate for this, but I think he's so offended because he either doesn't have those leadership qualities outside the game ( he's even said he has imposter syndrome) or he BELIEVES he doesn't. Being surrounded by Hollywood types isn't the best for your masculinity either, as they attack any for of masculinity as toxic. I'm not saying leadership is a male trait, but it IS a masculine trait.
@@lextheap1638 If I thought I'd get hate for something, I probably would pass on saying it online but I appreciate that you wanted to share that anyway because it's genuinely an interesting insight. I don't wanna pass that kind of judgment on him because it's a very speculative reach and I think speculating on someone I don't know, especially negatively, is kind of nonconstructive. But the latter half is wise stuff. All people have a spectrum of feminine and masculine traits and it just so happens that positive masculine expression is lately almost as discouraged as negative masculine expression, and I could see that happening in some social groups in Hollywood as well. But positive masculinity should be propped up and set as an example for men and women. So stay strong and keep modeling that "positive" expression.

One of my favourite facts about that theory is that Dacid Mech - the guy who created the theory - has spent his life's work trying to prove that he was wrong
The think I love here is Travis got exactly what he wanted. Like it’s this psychological play mind play that make Travis the actual alpha. He knew what he was doing. He knew Matt was going to bit that bait hook line and sinker. Travis set Matt up so that the only way for him to show he isn’t influenced by an alpha is to say and or do nothing. @@jeremycampbell4021 I believe it is just an inside joke, I doubt Travis actually believes the alph mentality in any case, in the sense of what it has become culturally speaking for humans.
And as he is a werewolf it is specifically about the misconception of wolves, and not other animals in this case.
As there have already been other jokes about the alpha from the group, that was clearly fun jokes taking the piss on the idea of "the alpha" again, as it is seen in human society which is just plain wrong.
I don't see anything wrong in that interaction or any kind over triggered response, it's all fun and games ^^
@@shmeebs387 I said that the person doing the original study said that he himself was wrong in how he had understood it to work.
The difference between captive and wild animals will always be different, and will be near impossible to compare to completion. even studies done in the wild have proven themselves, through many different species to be hard to get accurate.
However, in any case, the way that humans, especially the stereotypical "alpha male" way of thinking, and idea of such
Is in itself just plain wrong
@@Zepulchure There definitely are personality types that are more geared toward leadership. Trying to classify it as alpha, beta, whatever is kind of silly, but that doesn't change the fact.
I think a lot of the disagreement people have about it is in trying to map a rigid structure on it with all these labels.
Gotta love Laura's internal monolog probably just sighing going "yep I married that one"
“Yes, regrettably, that is the man I love” ❤
I think they’ve both had ample opportunity to think that about each other.
I feel like Matt had a highschool flashback to some big dumb bully saying something similar and it triggered his fight response XD
Would be funny of this got an animated series and the narrator cut in to correct Chetney.
"Royal Tinkering Academy" Actually pretty damn close!
I wonder if Matt knew what the tattoo meant at that moment, and hated what Travis came up with as his cover.
The intelligence check just so Matt can destroy dudebros kills me every time. 🤣
The study he quoted as wrong is not wrong tho.
@@felipevitorino3183it is, and the guy who published it spent most of his career doing all he could to try and get people to realize he was wrong. But, dudebros be dudebroing.
@johail3510did you think posting this would help you get laid or internet points? Alpha male chads are deluded but you reek of nice guy energy.
@johail3510 because being a corporate consumer slave & the state raising your children is so much better. Everyone has to serve someone. You should serve your own. Biggest failure that a handful of generations could ever be still has the gaw to lecture the same failed principles. It's baffling to me. Bottom line, you can't get around without a head, if authority isn't inside the home then the home is a satellite or a vasal. A house wife is not a houseslave. She is single strongest weapon humanity has to preserve itself. Don't even mention housewives without giving praise.
@@BlueRadium Even so there's still a hierarchy of sorts, there are stronger men and weaker men, the leaders and the followers. so while the study of alpha wolves has been debunked, it is still a fact that a stronger man can and will dominate a weaker man.
Travis’ voice is like a mix of Dutch Van Der Lynde and some family guy characters.
Just need him to say “I have a plan! Tahiti!”
Without spoiling… just wait.
I like the idea that it's like recognizing your best self
This has to be an inside joke, or at least Travis has heard this rant from Matt before, so he decided to fuck with Matt. It's great because Travis actually does make it about recognizing "the alpha" in all of us, it's actually very inspiring. Which is even funnier, because Matt shits all over Chetney being supportive, just because he hates the history of the word
Whoosh
@@blablubb4553 You've been on Reddit too long my friend. Either that or I have lmao!
Travis is always a helpful supportive character in these games. It's strange how many people don't realize that
Yeah Matt was so ticked off by the use of the term "Alpha" that he couldn't even notice Travis/Chetney had subverted the selfish/ignorant concept of an "alpha wolf" into something that was about everyone having self confidence no matter who you are. It was funny and positive!
@@ASB-is-AOK Yeah, that rubbed me the wrong way. Matt knows that Travis doesn't subscribe to that way of thinking and didn't even let him finish talking.
Marisha almost spoiled his plan right at the end there lol
This episode should be titled "Every blood vessel in Matt's head explodes at once, killing him instantly"
I love the long simmer of what the tattoo actually was for.
I saw a tweet that said "When men refer to themselves as "alpha males", I hear that in the context of software, where alpha versions are unstable, missing important features, filled with flaws, and not fit for the public."
I think of it like radiation, where aplha particles are large and energetic, but easily blocked by intervening objects.
I guess an alpha female would fall into the same category then.
@@williamsmith3349 damn here's your like, you crushed em
@@williamsmith3349 nobody really describes themselves as an “alpha female” tho lol
@@galm14ever Who did they crush? I have literally never heard nor heard of any woman referring to themself as an "alpha female". They're swinging at a scarecrow and you're standing on the sideline going "Yeah dude, you're kicking his ass!"
Rocks fall, Chetney dies
funny thing is in cmpaign 1 they met a werewolf pack in the fay wild and he referred to the biggest one as the alpha so he has now contradicted himself. got no problems with it just found it funny.... posted this in a reply but eh
Just goes to show it's only the social stigma against the name that everyone has issue with. If we just rename it to the male equivalent of a Boss Ass Bitch, nobody has a problem with it anymore (and anyone who says it's OK when a woman is a boss ass bitch, but bad when a man does it, is just blatently sexist)
Wokeness destroys worldbuilding.
Just now realizing how when marisha says “the royal tinkering academy” travis’s face goes “ah shit”
Inside everyone is Alfalfa. It grows wild there.
I feel like no matter what Laura rolled, Matt would have given the exact same response
I like how Matt comes in with the 'studies have shown that this theory is debunked'
I'm just like "...What studies? I don't remember a National Geographic in medieval times"
The "studies" didn't even debunk the idea. Those studies just went on to show that wolf packs in the wild are family units, not random wolves grouped together following an "alpha". The "alpha" wolves in a wolf pack are the breeding pair.....
So funny to watch this and realize how close Marisha was to what the tattoo actually stood for lol
Travis just knew he'd get that response from Matt, what a guy 😂
And I would have counted with "exactly what scientists and what study in this fantasy world without global communication networks, and how the fuck would I have ever heard it when I NEVER GOT INTO THE ACADEMY WHICH IS MY BACKSTORY?!?"
true matts response was pretty cringe, I mean Travis was trying to be a bit cringe it was the humor of his character, that was the joke, even if it was pretty inspirational in its simply way. Meanwhile matt pulled a genuine "Whell ACKCHYUALLY" and it came off very forceful and sincere.
@@galm14ever Yeah not a fan of that. I know Travis did that whole bit just to needle Matt, simply by Matt's reaction. But forcing a player to make a roll just so you can make a canon statement on camera is a bit too much. And it is not the first time Matt has forced information, feelings or reactions on the players, rather than allow the players to decide how their characters react.
Everything works how it works because somebody said it does. No atoms, no electrons, nothing.
It's all just magical bs.
IT’S A UNION??!
@@lextheap1638
He is offended by it, and rightfully so, because the whole "Alpha Male!" Mentality has nothing to do with traditional leadership skills. Or any Leadership skills at all for that matter. Not to mention that the whole Alpha bullshit is founded on something that has long since been disproven, as Matt stated.
this makes A LOT of sense@@lextheap1638
@@lextheap1638it's impressive that you could fit so much bullshit into a couple of sentences that it became remarkably terrible even for a youtube comment.
the answer to pretty much everything you said is no.
I love how Travis goes from: Big Can Hit Hard, Smart Can Think Ship, to I OFF'D SANTA IM THE ALPHA
So obvious that this is something matt has talked about in their friend group, especially with how they all ooooh'd when travis started out
These are the moments when everyone is rolling their eyes and simultaneously falling in love with the most ridiculous characters. Thank you Travis!!!
and the Santa pun was the rexintrum toy authority 🤣🤣🤣
I feel at 1:28 Laura fights not to break character, but in that brief second of regaining control, you can just see humored love in her eyes lol
They likely planned this together just to mess with Matt.
This is exactly the reason Matt plays the reckless dwarf in Exandria. Sweet sweet vengeance 🤣🤣🤣
reminder that Travis is Mat Mercer's boss
This and Sam making his character a flat earther is so goddamned hilarious. They gotta get Matt back for all the things they know he’s gonna pull. Matt doesn’t go easy on these guys so they gotta get it back with hilarity
Marisha was so close!
after months we finally know what RTA stands for!
Get your third character ready....now THAT is a threat of biblical proportions
Travis' shit-eating grin is pure fucking gold 🤣🤣
I'm so glad Matt responded as he did because it's exactly what I was thinking lol
And Matt almost definitely knew what RTA really stood for.
That probably contributed to his rage.
Fun Fact: "Respect the Alpha" is from the Christmas One-Shot the idea for Chetney came from
after all those ep his like the energizer bunny... his still going
1:34 ooh so close
Marisha almost had it right off the bat
Quite possibly my favorite Matt reaction of all time. 😂
Matt debunks Travis, casually sips his tea then immediately and ominously states his next character is about to join the game because this one isn't much longer for the world.
Travis is a god damn #LEGEND
See alphas don't exist among mundane wolves, but werewolves they would.
Human mentality of a pyramid leadership, and since the "alpha wolf" thing came from forcing wolves into none family groups, it works out
One of my favourite facts about that theory is that Dacid Mech - the guy who created the theory - has spent his life's work trying to prove that he was wrong
this is incorrect
David Mech was the guy, my guy
The legends say that chair was bolted to the ground but Matt was to far done
This is a real _real recognize real_ situation.
We now know the truth: Rexxentrum Toy Authority 😂😂😂
1:32 Wow, Marisha was so close.
I mean I agree with matt on this, the research was debunked by the very researcher that wrote the paper. But for the drama and fun of the show it’s golden!! Well done Travis. Legend.
What's so good about this is you can see Sam's reaction as soon as Travis says it and it's pure unfiltered Sam. No goofy Sam filter, no hamming it up, just pure honest genuine disgust. 0:08 Travis is a genius.
Matt staring at the camera when he takes a drink is GREAT
I'm glad their LA-like oversensitivity to these non issues tends to not pop up regularly in their games.
A grown man shouldn't have such a visceral reaction when someone uses a word.
Maybe, maybe not. But dominance hierarchy is a real thing that exists.....
I mean when Marisha says the Royal Tinkering Academy, it's kinda close to the Rexentrum Toy Authority. She was as close as anyone could've guessed really.
This still doesn't beat "Are you going to anoint my mighty balls?!" but it's pretty close.
Love how Matt stares into the camera as he sips his drink like “Go ahead, try me internet “Alphas””.
Alpha: An early, probably unstable version certainly not fit for public release or use.
Real Alpha's don't care anyway.
@@233Deadman isnt being a peaceful type more unstable? if all wolves just got along and had no leaders or fighting they would eat everything. that is unstable if you ask me. humans often have peace after war times for this reason. the same resources split less ways. if humans had true Peace and never fought would we not consume the world in the process? imagine what our population would be right now without any wars. we would be shoulder to shoulder.
Matt really learned what true rage was then.
*Cough* Chimpanzee literature *Cough*
I could feel the aneurysm in matts head
Sadly it still applies to werewolves since primates and by extension most mammalian humanoids have alphas.
"This one's lasted much longer than I thought."
This Thursday, May the 4th (be with you), will be the 40th episode since Travis made this statement.
I don't care about the wolf theory. Travis is absolutely an alpha and gigachad.
Well at least we don't have to worry about watching Matt run a werewolf the apocalypse game.
Matt's stare
Sams reaction absolutely kills me
Mats face was just 😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣😆🤣
The best part of this is big man Travis doing it in that voice
