People who grief are free to do what they want on their own servers, but hacking your way into private servers just to destroy things that hold value to others is not the same thing, and does not fall under the umbrella of creative destruction.

I prefer funny pranks like filling someone's base with water, not straight up destruction.
I once filled a whole base with water and added fish, corals and kelp to it, that shit was fun
see as someone who hates greifing this is more funny to me. sure its a pain to fix but then id build a fishtank in memory of that prank rather then be sad and depressed my time was wasted.
i really like those kinds of non-destructive pranks. my personal favorite is building a ton of 2x2x2 cobblestone cubes like a thousand meteors landed on the base ! it's absolutely unnerving but still easy to clean up : )
and they get revenge by doing something even crazier, hich then allows you to one-up them again. Its fun to try to find a way to annoy them. Griefing just leads them to grief you and its done.
i do that but sometimes i lavacast if they have a exact scaffold structure made or a bunch of cobble just as a joke to the fact they have a bunch of placed cobble or that they have big staircases. I also do stuff like the iron door trap and noise machine and the "put a bucnh of boats in one spot" prank and the "no sleep for you prnak (nametaged zombie bellow bed)

@@MaskedAnonymous They did "Minecraft is a game where no one can tell you what you can or cannot do", servers can tell you what you can or can not do, they worded it incorrectly, it should be "Minecraft is a game that doesn't tell you what you can or cannot do", but even that isn't true anymore now that chat reporting has been added. (And even then you run into the issue that telling and enforcing are two different things.)

People get upset over not being able to kill new passive mobs (God forbid we have unique methods of collecting items) for drops or try to use the creeper as a talking point when we got the warden standing in the corner

the context of that Team Avo clip used through the video makes griefing feel like a worthy endeavor. they tore down this guys house and turned it into a nature reserve. it's one thing to TNT and be done, it's another to completely reshape that part of the world into something entirely different.

I don’t really understand how they’d prevent griefing in the first place. People will find a way to bypass anything, and unless there was some dystopian 1984 style system to ban people from the game who are misbehaving, it’s probably best mojang doesn’t even try and leaves it to the server level.

I'm suggesting a "building fatigue" potion effect that adds a cooldown to placing blocks in the trial chambers/near bases that doesn't really help as people can just bonemeal megatrees and lava cast the tri-state area

You could probably prevent most griefing with mods that negate or reverse what the griefers are trying to do.
For example Knarfy has a video demonstrating a mod that makes it so when a player or a mob attacks someone or something else it kicks the damage onto the attacker instead.
There are mods that allow players to form groups and claim chunks in the name of the group and then disallow anyone not in the group from right or left clicking in that chunk.
I think if someone comes up with a mod that either completely disables lava casting on a server or limits it to certain y levels and enough servers implemented it that would eliminate the current trend of lava cast griefing.
Griefers don't survive on their own, they need other creative players builds to destroy in order to do something. They are parasites that subsist on the enjoyment of destroying what others have poured hours into. That doesn't mean they are wrong or don't have a place. What does a griefer do when they have nobodies build to destroy? I could see the people who grief probably not enjoying minecraft all that much when they don't get to destroy stuff.

true grifers need builders but builders dont need greifers
a lot of it is internalized spite. most of these people are pretty much losers in real life. They hate everything, everyone. The enjoyment of destroying other peoples stuff (since they cant destroy the person, though they absolutely would if they could), comes from sort of taking them down a peg or 2. By destroying their creations, they feel in control and powerful, if not just for a moment, and for that moment, the societal playing field is levelled.
Its really sad, more than anything. behind the griefer is a person with few skills, poor social skills, who is resentful and spiteful of the society around them, that they feel doesnt care about them.
But at the end of the day, who cares, they are losers, and thats the natural order of things.
It’s just a game if you’re really that upset that someone destroyed your build then you need to take a break from video games

I wish there was an upkeep mechanic to prevent active bases from getting griefed.
Having to use plugins and commands is not intuitive and doesn’t feel vanilla, along with being able to lock chests or wooden doors.
they wont add that because its a sandbox. if your base gets griefed then idk what you expected. dont build elaborate bases on a server without rules/plugins.
@@atomicaxiom7573 It’s impossible to protect a base in a server without plugins. That’s the issue I’m referring to. Elaborate or not, as soon as someone finds the base, it can be destroyed within minutes, even if the server has rules.

@@atomicaxiom7573 That’s just it, you need to hide your base. What if you don’t want to travel a long distance and live underground? What if you want to live around other players? Minecraft on its own without plugins doesn’t support player civilizations. If there was a city with 100 players, no matter how well they build things or try to protect it, if there is no land claims, it only takes one player to ruin everything.
I think it would be a good idea for there to be a vanilla mechanic that makes griefing more difficult or slows it down to where the griefer can be stopped without the use of plugins or commands.
I just recently learned about factions in Minecraft, and it fits what I want pretty well, so I think it would be cool to have something like that in vanilla but using blocks, items, or structures to protect land instead of commands.
@@TheRealToaster2 the grinder can already be stopped. As long as there are people in the base, they probably have pretty good gear and then it’s just a 2v1 / 3v1. And yes the base can be damaged still but you can repair the base. I think area claims in vanilla would make it feel kinda weird and also babyfied. But I respect ur opinion 🥄
As someone who was part of that old culture where we were the ones who discovered lava-casting, and made one of the original slime block based greafing machine. I kinda feel ashamed. I know that many people independently discovered all of this, but we all have our part to play in what we have made.
Crazy to me why some people would destroy beautiful mega-build bases, works of art. I get why, but I just could never.
how to fix greifing in a few simple steps
1. remove all explosives
2. remove the ability to break blocks
3. remove lava and water
4. remove multiplayer
5. delete the game
6.- Remove the world

Ever since I saw the tweet from Notch saying, "Then don't Grief," gives off a neutral tone. Which made me think Mojang just don't really care at all about griefing so long as it doesn't mean to harass, stalk, dox, or support known historical and currently known hate groups in real life.
After all, like kingbdogz said in 11:32 ;

Him saying "it's a sandbox afterall" just deepens my perspective of the game is that everything is made and built within Minecraft is crafted only by the players themselves. Us. The stories we make, adventures, friendships, connections, communications, and many other things I cannot name for there is too many.
What we do in the game is what MAKES Minecraft fun. If you aren't having fun, then you aren't making it fun for yourself as it is a *Sandbox* game where you are free to do anything you will in the world you created for yourself or the community in Minecraft. Be it through adding mods, making mods, building creations and allowing others to be inspired by it.
You create memories for yourself, or you share it with others around you. This is Minecraft.
it's definitely a "read the room" situation. you should know whether or not the server you play on allows griefing, and if it does and that bothers you then leave. there are alternatives out there for you with grief protection. granted that doesnt even take into consideration the nuances of anarchy/semi anarchy communities, most people dont just indiscriminately grief other players.
I actually thought that him saying that was surprising becuase I thought he would be more neutral towards it. Like they get banned for griefing so it’s obvious that mojang is against it despite what they said and notch is saying they got what they deserved. Like yeah I think notch is the type of person to say your actions have consequences which does line up with what he said but I also think that he would say it’s up to the server owner to ban them which kingbdogs said too but someone at mojang disagreed obviously and that’s why I found it surprising for notch to say that too

@@zacvh they already shown their reason of ban from 10:50 . Apparently, whatever the user did, the offensive was abusive and harmful enough towards someone or some group. For what specifically? We will never know. Just that it was enough to "hurt" someone or some group.
Though it is pretty clear from this video talking about it, points to Mojang being neutral and don't really care about people griefing as it is part of the game since the freedom to do so is there from the start. Rules are set to help create a sense of safe and comfortable environment in the Minecraft community. But it doesn't mean people can and will follow it every time... people can lie about agreeing to rules too. Just to do acts in the server of their own personal benefits at the cost of others.
I do like to dive into why orsondmc's account was suspended. Just as of now, I looked through their twitter and their pinned tweet was mentioning notch and telling the kind of servers they grief with an attached image of a hate symbol within the said kinds of servers. I do question whether if their level of griefing is justified. Not that hate groups shouldn't be griefed for what they believe in, but for how far the griefers are willing to go to harass people to the point of suicide. No matter who it is. It morally isn't right to harass people to that point even if they believe in a hate group.

It’s not a “griefer vs business” problem it’s “a55holes vs normal people” problem. The only thing the report feature should do is to ban griefers and trolls
Half of this comment section is like "oh griefing is actually a good thing", and that is just sad; this means that a huge amount of people actually supports destroying what somebody spent hours, maybe even days of hard work on for mere minutes of their own enjoyment. And if that's what the view on the situation is for a large part of the community then I'm very much happy I only play on private servers with only my closest friends.

for the most part, players who play on online servers should know what you are getting yourself into and what risks come with it. Griefing is inevitable and anything worth keeping should and must stay in private servers

Someone at my school recently started a server and I spent like 50 hours on just my base and they sweared they wouldnt grief or steal but they did causing the server going to anarchy and everyone’s base being destroyed

Honestly that's exactly how I would imagine any server for school friends/classmates would go.
Thats the fun. If they find your base and want to destroy it then they will. But you can travel very far and hide your base, get geared up and beat their ass. The problem with newer players like you is that if there's any mild inconviniece you will just keep bitching about it. So how about you do something?

I really don't like griefers, be that in Minecraft or other games. All they serve to do is ruin the game for others.
Griefers also just so happen to be some of the most annoyingly persistent people out there. Anything done to try and get rid of them, they'll either find a way to bypass it, or even turn it against you. This is what you get when a manchild who never grew out of kicking over kids sand castles over has too much time and nothing better to do.
With just how extreme and malicious griefing is now, it just becomes a mental and emotional drain to have to deal with persistent and beligerent trolls n' griefers when all you want to do is have fun. It eventually makes you quit the game just to avoid having insults thrown your way or being targeted and bullied in game. And even then some griefers who are *especially* malicious follow you outside of the game to spam you with abusive messages, saying awful things to you that just drain you even more. And good luck blocking the guy, 'cause they have like 50 more accounts to continue harassing you after ye try to get rid of them.
At what point does griefing go from being a harmless n' simple prank in a game to actually malicious harassment and threats?

I've never enjoyed large multiplayer survival servers, the insane griefing or alternatively the insane lack of griefing always makes public survival servers boring one way or another. It's why I only play private survival. You'll never catch me playing survival with people I don't know, it's just an awful time...
Yeah there's no in between anymore. It sucks, the trolly small-scale/slow kind of griefing was legitimately fun, especially if you did it while the builder was there and trying to fight you off. Now it's all just tnt, withers and lava casts, super boring

The reason that your peaceful server is less popular than your violent one, could just be that it's newer. And your original audience of hardcore minecrafters just don't want to play on it.
2 Ideas to balance TNT and lavacasts: 1:Obsidian Plating: Vertical line of 3 obsidian for 30 plating, transparent, only plates connected blocks, but strong and blastproof 2: Cobblewrecker: a tool that can veinmine cobblestone, but only cobblestone. probably made with 2 breeze rods, 2 netherite ingots, and a heavy core.

This is why most of my Creative-mode builds have TNT-explosions turned off. I just don't trust people around my builds.
One of the scariest things thats happened on my server was a random bot joined letting me know it wasnt whitelisted. i turned whitelist on but i wonder how many servers have been destroyed from people scanning ips and griefing.
As a person who joined your server, I hadn't even realised that the survival smp was the griefing one and got so dang confused that I just left.
I though that the rpg server was some random extremely non vanilla thing so I didn't even think about it.

I sometimes troll friends. nothing major or destroying their stuff. stuff that is mildly annoying or moving items from their chests somewhere nearby. current server I'm on, holding onto a curse of binding book to stick on a pumpkin. keep inventory is disabled so not really an issue if someone gets stuck with it. been wanting to use a map and a banner to send someone on a long trip to get their stuff back, mark the location with the banner on the map. leave map in their base with a sign explaining things.
How TF did I guess that you were planning on sending them on treasure hunt for their loot before reading the whole comment?..

I like the addition of team avolition breaking stuff in the background
In my opinion, they should add some redstone blocks that make griefing difficult, that way you can stop players from griefing easily, turning it into a battle of intelligence
i wouldn't be surprised if someone came up with a Redstone based counter within the week, let alone other workarounds but i like the idea.
One idea I had which moding idea but could maybe work structures. Use block Conor blocks then scans entire base upwards to sky limit unless set something above it say anchor then. Save builds when someone greifs it just get all stuff rebuild again. Then pull item auto build it. So still semi intelligent. Takes resources force people think outside box
Definitely would be funny to have some security stuff that makes it harder to grief but not impossible. Makes things more interesting without completely taking away the choice from server owners
If you're waiting for Mojang to do something so groundbreaking as that, while also maintaining "vanilla" aspects, might as well lay in a coffin ⚰️

I used to go on a server a few years ago, I checked the world map more recently (there is a website of the map for this server) and I found that the town that I owned eventually got unclaimed and on the map it looks like it’s entirely gone. Idk if it’s got lava cobble mountains or just blown up with tnt but it’s still sad to see cause I wasn’t the only person that liked that town and what others and I built there.

Ahh, yes, the great wither-ing of pw blazes... despite happening over a month ago, and I and a few others working to purge them, someone found like a dozen stragglers yesterday.

One time just to try it. I joined the survival Server on life boat. I built a beautiful house by a river. I got a dog and I built another portal and got almost full diamond armor and then I logged out whenever I logged back in. I was on a pressure plate and TNT was all around me. That's not cool, bro.
When I played your server and saw that lava cast wall I was amazed... it gave spawn a surreal sort of menacing atmosphere...

I completely agree, it sucks when people grief public places or grief every little thing that they come across. I play anarchy and I can confidently say that there are a actually a lot of people would also agree. Just look at all the highway builders. Griefing is a powerful weapon, and thus should never be used indiscriminately. Modern griefs are so dull, always the same tnt, big ugly lavacast, and some renamed withers. I miss the days when me and the boys could just get up to some trolling shagginess, flood a base with mobs, put the whole base under water, make all the stone blocks silverfish, plaster the base with inappropriate map arts. What has happened to modern griefing? The goal of griefing is not to just nuke everything that you come across, no, it has to be done with purpose and with art. When I grief a base, I don't destroy it, I add to it with my own unique artistic flavor and I feel that people just don't get that nowdays.

A server I play called survivalmp allows griefing but nothing has happened to the spawn. Also it rotates seasons so the map doesn't have a problem anyways giving no incentive for large craters and lavacasts as well as rtp being a thing you will not have lava walls around spawn. So its very nice

I don’t know why this is a surprise. The concept of Minecraft revolves around doing anything and being creative. This includes destroying other structures
The problem is that destruction here only brings twisted sick joy via the realisation of ruining someone's efforts. The process itself is just boring and repetitive(aka cheat/blow up/spam withers and/or lavacasts), there is no creativity in that anymore

Minecraft is ultimately a creative tool, I believe griefers are parasites in every sense of the word. Builders do not need griefers, but griefers need builders. If your only enjoyment out of the game is to take pride in the destruction of other peoples hard work, then you are a bad person. It is like throwing paint over someone's recently completed portrait, just because it exists in the virtual world doesn't make it ok or right. However, Minecraft is a sandbox game and if you want to participate in griefing, take it to a server which allows for that.
In general, I believe that griefing is wrong except in a server where it is within the guidelines set by staff. People should be able to feel safe on servers they specifically chose to avoid griefers and griefers can play with each other and those who enjoy the thrill of surviving in an environment with hostile players.
If griefers aren't just griefing other griefers - which they're not - then they're actively ruining other peoples experiences, people who don't want to grief others.

Griefers tend to use far more bot accounts than non griefers too. So this artificially inflates the population of griefing servers.
I used to play with friends on a no-griefing smp with Land claim plug-in. I had a little garden on my roof and a friend would constantly gone and jump on my fields to turn it into dirt. It was annoying but the funny kind of annoyance you do among friends.
Griefing is the reason Multiplayer doesn't exist in commercial games like Cities: Skylines or SimCity, but they do in non-commercial like OpenRCT2, because you can also just play it with friends only and not have griefer issues if you don't like it.

I used to be a little shit on the minecraft server/club I was in (it was like a weekly camp thing) and would steal people's crops (also some Weighted pressure plates off of someone's door for some reason) and would steal stuff from unlocked chests and occasionally blow up land. It was fun but I also feel kinda bad about it now. The memory is a bit fuzzy but I remember the layout of the server perfectly. We had a final party at the end of the day camp and I kicked ass at rocket league. Dude, I miss that so much. Not gonna drop the sole counselor's name but I like to think everyone else in the camp remembers him, too.
P.S.: that ladder up to build height (it was dark oak wood, I think) took so long to climb but it was so fun to jump off of onto the slime blocks :] favorite spot along with the fireworks bridge

Me and a few friends have our own private server with griefing enabled. But when we grief, it's doing stuff like covering a house with snow or filling up all the rooms with dirt and flowers. Silly pranks that don't do harm , but still are a lil annoying to clean up. We can do this because we trust each other to not take the joke too far. But that trust is gone in public servers, so I prefer to play on ones that have anti griefing measures
I have an acquired taste with my griefing. If I see a player trying to build a quick starter house, I might repeatedly mess with them and troll them. Although, if I were to play on 2b2t and came across an enormous mega-base, I wouldn't leak the coords, I wouldn't destroy it, etc.
If I saw a new player making a base and wanted to troll him, I'd just built a mountain (actually decorated, naturally looking one) over it with a small opening leading to his house
