    Pro tip: you can simulate the "overdriven" MPC60 in the MPC Live by purposefully raising the volume before the MPC60 effects plugin. So say you set the MPC60 effect in slot 2, then in slot 1 you have for instance the AIR EQ or something, use that effects main output volume and set it at +12dB.. then in slot 3 you add another AIR EQ and set it's gain to -12dB. Now you've overdriven the mpc60 effect and it will definitely sound different to your "overdriven" test 2. This is a more like for like comparison if you are interested in the emulation of the MPC60, instead of overdriving the inputs or outputs of the MPC Live.
    Pro tip2: it's also fun to "under drive" the mpc60 effect.. send it a really weak signal, like -24dB down.. then compensate in slot 3. This brings a different tonality.

    For me in both initial performances I like the 60 better. The overall tone is warmer, but I also get more details from the open hi-hats, more prolonged ringing. From the Live each instrument is more separate, with space around them, but the melodic sample is very receded. In the 60 everything is closer together and closer to my ear but the sample is very present.

    The MPC 60 can even actually brighten the sound (if you sample the sound in pitched by an octave at the source and then pitch it down the same amount in the MPC, it actually nicely invigorates the sound!) I think the power of the device just like with all old Akais comes from running the input stage reasonably loud: sounds so good with drums.

  • @jackpijjin4088
    @jackpijjin4088 4 роки тому +22

    The 60 definitely has a more 'bottom-middle'-focused sound, while the Live has a lot more 'high' in the mix, especially noticeable with the driven samples. Both sound great, though. I'm positive with more EQing the 'high' could be tamed from the Live and give it the 'warmer mellow sound' of the 60. Kind of surprised they didn't account for that in their emulation/filter, but of course old equipment ages differently from unit to unit, so sound will vary.

    • @RickyTinez

      If im not mistaken (which i often am) the 60ii applies a filter to reduce some high freq noise. Maybe this is similar to the sp1200 trying to filter out aliasing.. hmm

    The mpc60 sound is beautiful. That said, with the live you have flexibility that you can emulate that sound on the unit (or later in your daw) or go with a million other coloration type sounds. I really like Ricky's attitude, very chill but the best bit is the open mindedness, like the when he says inthis video, why not run a $4,000 synth into a $100 sampler?! Why not indeed!
    Actually I've ordered a P.O 33, because its really well designed, sounds rough and gritty (its 8 bit). It seems we live in an age of digital perfection, yet we seek imperfection. It reminds me of how something like handmade pottery is beautiful, in part due to its imperfections. The P.O 33 is a real winner, everyone should get one. Lots of fun, chic design and plenty of warm, digital dirt!

    When overdriven the 60 retains a much smoother sound. It added some nice character to the sound. The live sounds good as long and it's not overdriven. Except on that one crash sample, the live handled that better than the 60. Still I'm impressed with the live.

    Hi
    Just completed a degree in Sound Engineering and Music Production- we studied this topic in class with out great tutor Sam Willis - 8bit /16bit analogue being continuous vs digital being limited - great video - but what’s most interesting is that the Live sounds so very very close - you’d be nit picking to find a huge difference and whatever one has over the over can be gained through plugins - maximum respect to Roger Linn - the MPC 60 is the legacy instrument whose workflow still beats a DAW - simplicity/ limitation breeds creativity

    Most of the “Analog” sound people talk about is usually the lack of brightness. Newer technology is usually going to be more brighter. Also digital sounds have less of headroom when it comes to driving sounds for a nice “Distortion”.

Now to be honest I’m no expert in the subject but even in traditional music recording it’s understandable that “you can’t polish a turd” so if your sound source is already at its limit then just over sampling will just create other problems. ua-cam.com/video/l0CsAqCtZXo/v-deo.html

    i think MPC 60 more crispy ... am i right ?

  • @OdinOfficialEmcee
    @OdinOfficialEmcee 4 роки тому +2

    If you know what to listen for it is extremely obvious and easy to pick out. The big changes are clarity, punch, detail, and headroom. The MPC 60 actually has less of all of these but it also has a low mid bump that warms things up and makes it feel punchier - EQ for free.
    I think to get it closer to the original resampling or or printing at much lower resolutions would do the trick. The SP1200 for example is 12 bit @ 25 kHz, the MPC 60 is 12 bit at 40 kHz, the 3000 is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz. In comparison, the live likely defaults to 24 bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz. By down sampling you are going to get a lot closer to the original sound by capturing the information the older units would have actually been able to capture and shave off the excess that gives it the modern feel.
    The only difference left will be the differences in the samplers soundcard that actually does the audio conversion. While the plugin gets you close, if you want it near perfect down sampling should get it to where it is near imperceptible. If it still isn't quite what you need a little shaping EQ or compression will likely do the trick.

    knead" the sound while the mpc seems to be more clear but a little bit closed on the medium high frequencies. This probably due to the digital processing that tend to "spread" the sound's frequencies to the same level acting allmost like a glue comp. Maybe to avoid peaks in the final master track.

    The Live seems to do overdriven sounds better if you use reduced bitrate samples.
    I've been sampling on an old Yamaha SU10 and then resampling on the Live and that seems to give it the grit I was looking for.

    This is fantastic and the format you did was perfecto. Didn't have to jump through hoops to find out which was which. I liked 1. A, 2. B. Both! Dang...the 60 definitely has a better overdriven sound which I suppose is expected. My S950 gonna get some more love now. Bro, inspiring me to do a Live vs SP1200 shootout.

    Interesting: for the clean I much preferred the overall sound on the 60. For the distorted/overdriven I liked the Live quite a bit more especially that aggressive high end. I think I overdrive and distort my drums 99% of the time, it’s just baked in to my music at this point, so for the specific sound I like to make the live has the edge for me. But real talk when you start mixing and hitting the eqs you can get both to sound excellent, but this was fun to see these differences under a microscope!

    I previously wasn’t into newer samplers because I felt like they were too clean to the point where they sound like your average DAW but with less capability. I preferred older samplers because the less advanced tech caused them to inadvertently have distinct sounds, making them useful for sound design.
    I think it’s very clever and forward thinking for Akai to create emulators for their older products. I would’ve never thought of a brilliant solution like that.

      Been a feature of Maschine since day 1 (idk if it’s as good as the Akai version, but they got 60 and other models in there, more since newer versions of maschine as well, so the standalone might compete pretty well when it comes to sound quality, well see!)

    • @apoclypse
      @apoclypse 4 роки тому

      @@JamieClark Maschine hasn't had the feature "since day one", they added the Vintage modes almost 2 years after Maschine was released. As for the modes, Maschine has the SP1200 but in varying modes and the MPC60. The Live has the SP1200, SP1200 Ring, MPC3000, and MPC60. Having both I feel like the MPC versions sounds better overall than the ones Maschine has, especially the MPC60. The MPC has had these modes since the Ren was released so many moons ago. That being said you can't go wrong with either.

    • @apoclypse
      @apoclypse 4 роки тому

      You can also put the sampler effects into the insert chain and sample with it on to "print" the effect in. You can also actually change it so that the Live use the effect globally in the preferences so that it's basically on the master output.
      One thing Ricky is doing here that will really bring out the sound of the vintage plugins is to lower the pitch of the sample, that works exceptionally well for the SP1200 engine, but still works on the MPC60/3000 mode as well, though it doesn't get you the same crunch imo.

    In the AB tests, the B (MPC ii) sounded fuller, while the A (MPC live) sounded a bit brighter. Overall though I think the LIve captures the vibe, and it sounds way better than the ab shoot outs I've seen with the mpc live and the sp-1200 shootouts.

  • @justdope1963

    MPC 60, to my ear, gave more muffled sound and breaks up rather nicely when pitched down. Not surprised as I had an S612 until I sold it a week ago and would get a similar effect. The MPC Live had a much more overdriven sound on the kick. Very punchy, but not dissimilar from what I get in software. The shootout I really want to hear is MPC 3000 vs. S3000 and/or the other Akai rackmount samplers of that era which supposedly share the same sampling engine.

    60 has that body, no surprise. the crucial thing I see a lot of people missing is that it's not about how the same kick one-shot sounds in comparison. its ALL about how the machine sums multiple signals. only two things in your machine actually shape the output sound: workflow design (directly dictates how you will work inside the machine) and summing algorithms/converters (headroom, overall spectral shape, etc.)
