Thanks for the shout out bro :D I haven't had any issues with the computing power at all actually. Now... I haven't made much music with multiple instances of any of the new synths or went crazy like that so I can't say that it won't become an issue in the future for sure. I also just try to keep my projects pretty clean in general, no matter what sampler I use. I rarely have programs open that I don't use, that's just me. Great video! Always love checking out your stuff
Accurate, I LOVE your videos as well!! Hey, help me understand the way to get my brain over the “program” situation. I love the freedom of my Maschine - any pad, any type of sound/program/synth/etc… i found on the first MPC Live, years back, that the program limitations drove me nuts. You work with both… Do you have this same issue, or did I misunderstand the ”limitation” back then? My PLUS is not stable… so in almost every other way, the MPC Live mk2 looks superior!
A useful tip is that you can save your project as a preview. It saves in pretty much the same way but it will save a MP3 file of whatever you select - say 4 bars. So when when you go through your library of songs you can hear an audio preview before you load it up. Such a great feature and I use this method instead of selecting recent projects on startup
regarding folks' concern about CPU usage: I have left mine on all day loading samples, building drums, using plugins, etc without issue. the mp can handle it. plus a few of the of the issues that occurred here are firmware version-specific. 2.10 has some kinks to work out because it does SO much. we've got to remember that. this series of mpc is a full blown music computer. 2.9 was incredibly stable and the next mini update they do (2.10.1 or so) will address everything going on here. just like our laptops, run samples and heavy use items on an external USB or SD and your mpc will be all good. play the hell out of them, my friends
I've had the OG since launch and that was my issue and still will be my issue often. Discovering what all the buttons I don't understand do years later really feels foolish but it keeps the MPC around.
Wow, i just have to say.. The MPC Community is Badass!!! Thank you everyone for all the tips and tricks that you've left in the comments. If you're new to the MPC please scroll through the comment section because you'll learn a lot more about it from other users and not me haha! Tubedigga, Poli Popo (nicest guy ever), MG The Future, CMP (Craftmaster Productions), iamSight, Lifted Noise, Elbowmedia Studios, Marcello, Masada MPC, Chris Galactic. Def check out Musician Paradise free chord progression packs and arps patterns too. The progressions you could add to standalone too.
Also, Kit-maker.com for converting all your sample packs and NI expansions to MPC expansions (one click). He's got another program for making custom keygroups from samples too. And one more tip you could convert all your Ableton packs to MPC expansions but it involves a bit of work (Leoson video).
everyone, remember the touch screen is robust on purpose because when you're in a real setting playing a set, you're naturally gonna press everything with more force than when sitting in your bedroom with headphones on. like an ATM screen: built to be abused. if it were as pressure-sensitive as an ipad, that would lead to even more incorrect buttons pressed when there's a PA blasting behind u while playing your mpc. for example around 9:50 once Ricky starts jamming he's pressing the pads much harder than earlier on the touch screen. On this series of MP, the screen can also be played like the pads and thus, needs to be durable. enjoy the new MP's
That’s a good explanation as to why it’s not the most sensitive , makes sense , I dig in to mine using XY and im scared of cracking it , but now I know that’s not going happen , I’m happy
I've had my mpc Live for 4 Years. I know it in and out. Hands down its the best beat machine/daw/sound engine I've ever owned. I'm still surprised by how much they keep adding to it. I've worked on almost all the mpcs . The 2000 was my joint. I've been producing since the 80s. Give it some time and you'll make more music in a year than the last 10 years on the Live 2....MPC X....or ONE. ✌
I just jumped out the window and bought one on sale. 🤦🏾♂️ I know they say the economy is supposed to have a downturn in 2023. I was thinking about returning it before it's even shipped bc it would probably be wise to save that monthly payment and put it in the stock market. However, your comment - you'll make more beats in a year than in the last 10 - kinda comforts me. I haven't been in the studio in a few years but I feel the inclination to give the world a gift b4 I die. I always wanted an MPC. F it. Why not 🤷🏾♂️. I know the Live II is going to inspire me. Coming from Maschine. Super excited. Just the metronome alone sounds more "rap" on the MPC ! I'm about to turn up 1000. I apologize for the rant. I guess I'm still reassuring myself that I made a good & timely purchase 😄
man the prices for a used MPC X dropped to around 800-900€ wtf O_O i bought my mpc live 2 around 2020 for around 1000€ and yesterday i saw the prices for used mpc x...
One thing that you didn't mention in your video is how easy it is to move your work in the MPC to Ableton Live. These MPC's have Ableton Live export, so you can play around as much as you want in the MPC, and export your work as an Ableton Live Set. It really has the best integration with Ableton Live than any other standalone groove box/drum machine.
What it's really missing is usb audio. It's wild that it can host interfaces but you can't just plug usb from the live into Ableton and track out like that, especially with things like the s2400, sp404, elektron gear, Roland gear, etc all doing it no problem. It's a small price to pay for everything that's in the live 2 though
Had an MK1 for two years and upgraded it to an mk2 and oh my. The new physical additions with CV, speaker and the buttons are just fantastic. Not to mention the free software updates that just makes it better and better. Such a great platform and I'm still finding new possibilities on it after all this time. All the best.
Wow! Great to see you've got one of the newer MPC's :) I bought a One (to keep costs down) and have had relatively few problems, but then I'm not as quick as you. I've never really looked at or worried about CPU as I've not had any problems. Yes, Marlow is awesome and the review of the 2.10 release is great. Also - I'll vote for a 1 hour stream of you on your Live II would be SO AWESOME! And yes, the community is great as I'm terrible (lazy) with manuals and just like to feel my way. Whenever I've had problems, people have always been there to help - pretty quick too. Welcome to the club and can't wait to hear what you produce - especially when you hook it up to Ableton, some synths and modular. PS I've had a Push2 for ages too, but it's so limitless which is why I got the MPC One to introduce some limitations and go DAWless (although the irony is I now use it with Ableton sometimes) after being originally inspired by you.
#1 put a SSD in it (WD Blue 3D NAND or Crucial MX500). Change timestretch algorithm to Pro Ten in settings. Change display resolution to 96ppqn. Change default drum/keygroup filter to Lowpass 8 pole. Set instant track mute. Set up 414 mode template (sp404) on qlinks (A1madethebeat videos).
@@_thevaporz yeah im soo stupid .. i didnt think of scrolling down to find it "EXACTLY WHERE IT ALWAYS WAS" tnx Zach for your helpful reply . but dont worry im not gonna message you next time i loose a sock or sum sheeeet lol
“Signing up for a credit card at Macy’s” I laughed at this interestingly particular and accurate example that allowed me to exactly know what you’re talking about 😂😂😂😂
I bought an MPC ONE in January, just to augment my aging MPC collection with a higher resolution sequencer. Also like the sample chopping for breakbeats and midi data extraction for groove templates. - Twice my unit has glitched on me, - both times I was performing repetitive functions, so I was building up speed with the button pressing, and I feel the machine just couldn't catch up with itself. I'm now looking at the X, but would prefer just an expanded ONE XL, larger pads, fixed tilted screen, more physical ins and outs. Definitely not selling my older units though. The only cons with the new MPC units for me, personally, are the pre-loaded sounds - I'd rather just have the spare memory, the AIR effects plugins aren;t for me. I don't use the soft synths, as I have a large vintage collection of hardware, but the built in soft synths are very capable. love to ALL, feel no hate
I've had this exact problem with my Force (not an MPC but shared DNA). I can reliably crash it by clearing too many pads too quickly (I imagine missing synchronisation in the code).
This thing is great for chopping up breaks. I almost never did it on the rs7000 as it was so slow and tedious but holy shit now I've got my Mpc One i can't stop chopping and sequencing breaks
I’ve no idea what is going on with so many MPC users having these issues. I literally haven’t had one single problem with my MPC One. I had a few minor bugs with my old MPC X on 2.6 and 2.7 and definitely the software has been buggy, much more than standalone.
I’ve had the MPC Live 1 since 2018; never had a single issue with the CPU. I’ve used it for some live sets but mostly production and I use a lot of plugins and tracks with no issues
CPU is exactly the same in all the MPC Live/Live2/One/X. So far it's been no problem at all. You can literally play hundreds of samples at a time with full 4 slot effects. The CPU meters do not scale linearly or realistically. The highest I've reached in an actual project is about 90% and that was a BUSY project.
I use MPC One and I also found the touchscreen was not very touch sensitive which caused some issues working on grid mode or naming track/programs etc. But now I got an inexpensive stylus and it makes things unbelievably easier and faster.
ricky, i love my MPC and i think you will too. here's some dope features. 1. class compliant audio interfaces 2. the effects section (mother ducker for sidechain and and the sp1200 mode [not the 12 bit ring] 3. hype synth (oh my god amazing) 4. phono preamp 5. sound design with drums 6. portamento with 808s 7. drum synth (christ its so good, it just lacks a waveform view) 8. automation with effects also, please try to pair this with an sp 404. it's amazing.
I performed my first ever live show on an MPC one using the mellotron and odyssey plugins alongside samples and sequencing a synth and I didn't have any problems luckily.
I’ve had 8 synths , 4 drum samples and recorded guitar and bass plus a load of effects and XY on a 32 bar sequence with muting to layer and it’s never crashed , pretty awesome
I loved the video and thoughts, but can I just take a second to give you full kudos for the visuals? The lighting and ambience are off the hook dude. Amazing🙌🏻 As for MPC, I had the live 1 and currently own and use the X heavily. Until now it is very stable and I have never hit a wall with the CPU nor the ram (no disk streaming yet as of 2.10). The more you use it the more it amazes me. Thanks for the inspiration bro, peace!
To save on Ram you can Bounce your tracks after recording them in the “pencil icon” menus on the main screen then delete them out! Hopefully that helps… also the W and R icon on the top right of the screen is read and write for whenever you wanna record in your automations. Fun to use with the X Y effects!
For the issue with the sound of the sample BEFORE you load it. Check that "Warp"/"Sync" (not sure which) is not selected. Otherwise, the sample will warp to the BPM of the sequence and that example sounded like it was squeezed into a 1/4 note time frame.
I bought the MPC one, and with the new firmware update we can get 32 I/O with a class compliant mixer/audio interface, so powerful. If you could make a video with an hybrid live setup [mpc + modular] it would be awesome!
NO NO NO - you have NOT talked too long - more more more - ! I love to hoover around my studio, fixing cables , listen to you , believe me - i learn somthing new every sec. of youre video´s ! ;-)
I think this is the best sampler up to date. In my opinion they did amazing job. It doesn't mean it couldn't be done better. You can always do things better. Just wait for another mpc bro 😉
Someone prob already said it, but top tag on th right is r or W. Read or write. The track on the eye icon then has the same option to record automation. Next thing you’ll need is deleting it, so go to the track or step view. Look for something like the word velocity, and a drop down arrow. Tap it and it will open the automation line. You should be able to figure out deleting the automation from there.. use the icons top of page to select delete or pencil tool.
I bought my MPC One 2 weeks ago. I love it! I attached my rme interface to it and all my external gear with MIDI and Audio. It works perfectly! By the way, buy the mpc bible for live, one and x. I worked through it on one weekend and I now know nearly all corners of the mpc. Really good book.
For me, the best short cut is to hold main and then you can quick select tracks on the screen with one hand. Well, almost one hand. If you're in bank A, you can select track 1 to 16 this way, you need to press the bank button with your left hand to switch to another bank. It would be so good if Akai would add a small set of bank buttons on the bottom of the touchscreen so you can quick select banks with one hand 🙏🏻 also the new 'BANK A' etc text over the on screen pad buttons is madness. It means you can't quick select with one tap anymore. 😠 I'd also highly recommend the Akai Midimix, you can assign the three knobs on 8 tracks to do what you like. So can control the filter on any synth at any time and also fade volumes in/out or toggle mutes with the buttons. It's great.
So many negative comments about the touch screen, I don't get it... It has both - advantages and disadvantages over a button / knob layout but all we seem to hear is negative criticism. Not all touch screens are the same, the one in the Live feels incredibly responsive to me. Overall I see that as a plus but in some situations you have to watch out not to tap on stuff unintentionally, same with the Q-link knobs. Almost too responsive... But when I imagine having to use knobs for parameter automation values I'm so glad to have the touch screen instead, it's just such a joy to use for this application and so much faster. And being able to use the screen as an XY controller like a KaossPad is also tons of fun. There's two sides to every coin....
Funny my touch screen is fine but sometimes can be "touchy" trying to select tiny midi regions. (Slivers like double triggers) So i use select and then highlight it instead. But the xy pad is super responsive and i never have any problems...not gonna hate on my mpc because of a minor issue, i just adapt and overcome....people need to blame their problems on something...if only my touchscreen worked better it wouldn't suck so bad....i grew up when you had to work to program a machine to work and it was slow clunky half the times it did shit you couldn't control so you just rolled with that and used it , and if anything didn't work right you made it work. If i had mpc 2.10 at say 15 I'd probably be a millionaire...
Workflow is fast for me. If you make a 2bar loop with drums, go into the sequence properties and increase it by 2x, it will double it into a 4x loop and so on. I can work on each sequence as a portion of the song from intros, copy the intro into the verse and arrange it differently, copy it into a chorus and add or change instruments, effects, automate volume levels to pull down sounds and increase others. Its a learning curve no doubt, but I've yet to hear someone say they were born knowing how to use a DAW to its full functionality. much love for the channel!
USB (typing) keyboards work with it, I keep a cheap little one near by to avoid using the awful touch keyboard. Some keys like delete work in the grid editor and stuff too.
@9:01 that middle button that says "audition" is a drop down menu with the option to "sync" the sample with your projects tempo. As a default tempo, the mpc can confuse 1/8th notes with 1/16th notes, making some samples play bask SUPER fast.
Because you forgot to arm the track it didn't record automation, I'm with Milo on this one😉, cpu wise never had issues, and I think that live mk1 must have been iffy as I've had 2 x lives mk1 since they came out, never an issue?
@Uncommon Knowledge UK with Unknown Nordic hopefully we get disc streaming and then we be sweet, I did work out you can get 60 mins of samples in it but that was based on longer 4 min tracks sampled...
Reason I like really intricate instruments is I seem to outgrow most my instruments even if they are pretty tough to learn. I like things with a learning curve as I like to figure out perspective of the creators when they made it. Very interesting
I think the best way to approach this unit is to think of a DAW but compact and outside a compurter. I think the parameters you're referring to reference recording filters and such can be done in the recording of automation. Like steinbergs cubase, you create an automation track, assign the fx and tweaks you want and away you go with the capability to record automation in real time so it will be there forever in your track. It is a bit big for the small box. A bit like the new Wavestate synth by Korg that has you gettin bogged down with parameter tweaks rather than playing. A bit of billy wizz and you'll be fine but, you don't really wanna be doing that. assigning automation trax to q link will get you recording fx etc, it's just as you say, 'the learning curve you have to negotiate.' I hope to pick one up soon. But, cannot understand why only one pair of stereo trs inputs but three pair of stereo trs outputs all at 6.3. I would have thought 2 pairs of stereo outputs would be enough for booth and main out leaving you the chance to have 2 pairs of trs stereo inputs from external gear with a possibility of 4 mono as opposed to 2 mono of the on stereo pair. But I guess, we all work our way through what best suits us. I'll be reet in five years time I am sure. I will have found the on off switch by then lol. Great vids as always Ricky but, whereas you seemed keen some time ago with the MPC Live II you are now giving a somewhat subdued account. Last comment wuz for entertainment purposes only. If I give ET a giggle he might not kill me. take it easy.
I love that this isn't sponsored knowing you have some mpc knowledge. I bought a retro a few months after it released. First MPC. I'm using mine to sequence 4 synths, add a drum program or two. I use my synths onboard effects mostly, but also use the octatrack. I'm a noob, but I'm having fun. Lately I've been trying the digitone as a sequencer and having a lot of fun. Chopping is a breeze on the mpc in my opinion for sure though
Soooo! Happy you have a MPC in front of you right now .Love your channel and what your doing for the community. Would love to see more on this MPC. I Noticed you didn't mention the MPC X just wondering what your thoughts were on the X.
the touch screen is booty, PLUG A KEYBOARD in the USB it’s a game changer. I have the MPC One and the button layout + keyboard are 🏃🏾🏃🏾♂️💨💪🏽🤌🏽. I don’t have an issue with CPU even using 4 plug in tracks , and would love to see live set up ❤️
Hey Ricky! Thank you for all the knowledge you share. Watching your videos on the newest mpcs and your little fights with it (😂… I’m the same), I would like to tell you to keep on because they are amazing. About the CPU usage, you’ll have to take care like you had to on the old ones with the project memory. About the bugs, the last 2.9 was much more stable. In this 2.10 I’ve already get a lot of bugs including the edit all pads thing. The midi maping is losing it’s sources but not the ccs, and a bunch of others, and already send email to akai with some of them. We hope soon will be fixed. I’m working for at least 1 year only on Live and X, off the box, as standalone, and producing whole tracks from ideia to finish on them. Sounds really amazing!! Don’t forget to split your sounds outputs to submixes that changes EVERYTHING!! I already made a trick to do Global automation, so i can automate plugins in submixes and outputs, since they are outside the sequence and there was “no way” to do it, but I figured out how. If you’d like to hear some of the projects I’m doing, send me a message and I’ll send you some of the music, since they are unreleased yet. Thank you from a friend from Brazil!! 🇧🇷 PS If my English wasn’t the best, sorry! 😂😂
i have a MPC one, an octatrack, a polyend tracker. The polyend crashes quite often, a bit light in tools but still extremly fast workflow, straight to the point ...and it is perfect for nomad use. The Octotrack is really efficient with many sequencing features but don't like how it sounds. The MPC one didn't crashes and didn't get CPU overloaded. It sounds good, is easy to use and fulfilled with tools and possibilities to manipulate samples and sounds, so obviously requires a bit more time to get things done... i use it a lot for its sound design possibilities. I like all of them and use them equaly but in different ways...i'm very curious about the isla SP1200
@@AveMcree not even that far...32 steps pattern playing > instrument parameters 2/2. it freezes. can't even turn it off and have to unplug from power. already reach Polyend about it and latest update didn't change anything. It happens one out of 20 times, mostly when i quickly change screen menu...btw i meant isla SP2400.
ya I just got one last night while changing time signatures....maybe you wanna try to replicate. the steps are... - open empty project - sys > edit sequence - insert bars before bar one, with your new time sig. I used 5/4 - delete the bars that fall after the bars you just inserted. - then MENU Browse to find a kit - load kit.... - crash, machine restarts to startup screen. if I do it in a different order, kit first change time, it's fine.
Nice catch. I never had a crash until the new update just the other day I had a few keygroups, drum programs and plugins going then I tried adding Odyssey plugin, my cpu went to 85% and crashed, turned off and rebooted. Never really paid attention to cpu as it hovered around 30% most times. Tried it again and it was fine. I'm trying to find where to submit bug reports but Akai customer service is def lacking.
MPC One user here. I use mine for live show finger drumming performances and production in tandem with FL Studio. Never ran into issues with CPU while playing standalone. I've ran out of memory plenty of times, but that's due to me being dumb with sample file sizes. Got a live show coming this Saturday so y'all will see this thing in action.
By the way, not sure if someone already told you, but you can easily assign a q-knob by simply push and hold the Q-link button and then tap on a knob, and then hit Learn, and then tap on the screen of the soft knob you want to assign it to, and then release the Q-link button again. It's not super intuitive, but it's much quicker than navigating to the setting you want to assign through the menus.
Hey Ricky. Awesome to see you’ve bought the Live II. Been waiting to hear your thoughts on it. I’ve been getting the Internal storage error too. Only since updating since 2.10. I’m hoping they iron that out with a 2.10.1. Glad you’re enjoying it for the most part! It’s a great machine. Let’s see some more! Also, Marlow is awesomeeeee.
Hi Ricky - still relatively new to all this - looking for something that is effectively a mobile sketch book for ideas, that I can play with chopping and drums, then finish the work in my ableton workflow with push 2 - recommend this on this basis? Love all your videos - been really useful on my journey so far!
Another tip do not mess with the internal storage drive data (mmc/sd card) as it could brick your unit. As much as you might want to delete the stock demo projects and sounds etc, just leave it alone. Store all your data on a sd card/usb/ssd to be safe.
I really appreciate the fact, that you do NOT take money and/or equipment from Akai for this. Of course everybody is biased in a way, when having a piece of gear, but not beeing paid makes it REAL, which is a good thing on the way of making decisions. Thank you.
So on the CPU note - it genuinely took some serious effort to get the thing to max out (half a dozen synths including three or four AIR Tube synths, maxed out effects on most every pad in program, every program and group, about a dozen or so programs). I have found the internal resampling workflow to be solid way to manage that. I’m working on embracing the USB ports and feel like the MPC Live II really comes alive when you embrace a sort of hybrid workflow. The sheer connectivity lets me integrate with a lot of my gear and help minimize CPU usage (I really like using the ports to power and drive the MicroFreak and a Typhon). The class compliant MIDI and Audio is also hugely helpful, I’m using the MIDI to drive a PolyEnd SEQ and MIDI interface, works quite a treat! Class-compliant audio also helps with the biggest frustration for me - the limited inputs. One stereo pair given all the MIDI and CV I/O just seemed odd, so I’m glad the 2.10 update addresses this. My final gripe is that the file searching is just absolutely arcane, and can be frustratingly cumbersome if you have a large amount of samples on an SSD. I’d love to see Akai improve this on a future update. I know search isn’t easy (I used to work at a company that builds search software), but clumsy the file indexing and frustrating inability to return results from nested folders on the MPC Live II seems like an oversight. Final note: amazing as always Ricky. You sheet joy and honest frustration with parts of the machine made this a lovely watch and I learned quite a bit! Thank you!
Dude, just name your files...( example....sd card(name )....samples....company names....sample pack name....sample names...then program the sample page to open with preferences to always open in the folder you want....i think you open the page you want to bookmark press shift then hit the page number 1-5..it saves it...
lol, i wrote Akai a while back to make a Eurorack module sampler ... and now i saw it has a eurorack gate inputs on the backside. that's a cool thing. you can make a DIY drum sticks with a Piezo element, transistor + some resistors and trigger this device.
You only worry about CPU because you can measure it. What did it measure on the 3k, 2k etc ? We don't know as they were not metered so we didn't worry.
I use it to control a Minitaur and a Minilogue XD. It's super awesome about it. I basically just keep the MPC plugged in and controller the synths like you'd control an internal device and, eventually, once I'm all arranged, I'll record it just before final mixing. Works amazingly well.
in the top right hand corner of the screen you’ll see your automation button, next to the cpu button. To record automation just make sure it’s set to W for write. You might have had it set to R for read when it wasn’t working during the end of the video. Once you get around to saving templates for your workflow, you’ll fly through this thing- especially coming from Akai legacy 🤙🏼
Just found your channel....You're so refreshing and calm and draws me into what you're saying. I love your channel and ur my new fav! You keep it real and I'm very impressed....
It just hit home & I was LMAO @ 25:55 "Dude this things crazy. It does too many things !" It is an unbelievable piece of equipment to say the least & im learning something new everytime I use it. Good video Ricky I really enjoyed it Bro. Thanx
Your soothing voice lets me run this video in the background even though I dont own an mpc. Thank you for content. I came to you via the PO videos. Thanx!
Awesome stuff, but in the end, I was shouting at you to turn on automation recording. It's actually cool that automation recording is separate from midi recording, and you can just have fun with param changes without recording those, then easily switch between automation read/write.
Had an MPC One. Got rid of it, (for stupid reasons). Regretted that. Bought another one. Loving it; even bought a case so I can take it with me when I'm OTR. Personally, what I'd love for Akai to bring out a spiritual successor to the MPC 500 in terms of size and portability. A battery operated box that could work on it's own, but hook up to a tablet for the touch screen would rock. Sure, they have the Live, but it's a bit too much for what I'd need and I'm sure I'm not the only one. :)
@@J-Hz adding the Omnicharge Omni 20+ as another option for battery portability. I found out about this one from Accurate Beats talking about it in one of his videos while playing outside.
Yeah. I'm aware of the battery pack options, but I would still love a spiritual successor to the 500 that would be reasonably priced and could compete, (and possibly dominate), at the groovebox level. Roland's MV-1 is essentially a grovebox that can produce a finalized song at it's core; I'd just love to see Akai do something like that even if they also had to use a companion app for the touch screen.
OMFG I cant believe you purchased a MPC workstation. It should be snowing in Los Angeles by now. I still have not taken the plunge. Dont plan on doing it any time soon. MPC 2000 classic for life. 32MB is more than enough memory for me. But I like watching those Ave Mcree Live II/MPC One retro videos. Marlow Digs and Accurate Beats are cool too. Cant forget about Dilliot2k
Why the hesitation? Jump in, Diane, the water is cool! I think you could still load 2kxl files in the new ones, not totally sure. But that'd be cool to a/b your projects on both and see how you like it. The huge leap in speeding up workflow from loading/saving and chopping alone is worth it!
The MPC is pretty good. All these people talking about work flow, really don’t want to learn the equipment. They just want to press play and make music. RTFM
I wanted to thank you. I spent a few months looking for a set of Studio headphones. You mentioned some in passing in a video you did (aiaiai). I got them Friday, assembled them, and have never been happier. They are made of recycled material, designed to be repaired by the customer, and have the option to have the response I want (flat). The best part, they are cheaper than the pair they replaced… That’s a brand (the replaced brand) I’ll never go back to no matter how much the parent company PRETENDS they are environmentally responsible. Oh, and I’ve got an MPC Live II that I’ve had for a month that I’m learning too. So thank you for that as well. Hit us with a bunch more MPC Live II.
No issues with cpu using mpc live original for three years now. Upgraded to MPC X. If you think about the cpu is more powerful than the previous. Mpc 4K, 2xl, 3k, 1k and so on. All which I had before and they had no cpu indicators to see. Still have my 4K though. The more you learn the mpc live the more you can do. Remember every mpc is different 1k, 4K, 3k workflow so RTM or Akai videos are essential I see that you are still learning.
i noticed you can browse through the plugins filtering by manufacturer. i thought that was weird, since all plugins are made by akai. Maybe that’s a foreshadowing of akai opening the platform to other manufacturers?!
@@unknown9274 AIR was Pro Tools before Akai/InMusic bought them. I'm sure it's different teams of developers or they're all AIR developers now as they don't release anymore Akai plugins for it. It is a bit confusing trying to remember where every plugin is located but you can make a favorites folder for em. And yeah third party VST support is coming as well as disk streaming maybe by next update.
Great video as always, agreed with marlow being THE man, recently upgraded from the 1010music bb to the mpc-x and its nice to see some new-gen mpc's content in your channel, I never had to look at the cpu levels, as you said, if you keep the 'old' workflow you will never have a problem with hardware resourses on this
Yeaaa ever since the 2.10 update,I’ve been experiencing crashes for like the first couple days, and now I just save frequently and haven’t had any problems. You Tha man Rick
I had the same thing happen twice since I had the MPC One. It happened for me when I was scrolling through the stock kits too fast. Just don't scroll through your samples too quick. It cannot keep up with playing so many sounds at once. Besides that, I had no problems other than the pads retriggering from tapping them very lightly without using a stiff finger approach. It's just like when you change the synth content sounds. When you scroll, it takes until the second hit of the next sound that you chose to play and hear the next sound. All that I would say is just slow down a bit. Take your time, and you shouldn't have a problem. And do not EVER overload your internal storage. That will cause big problems. The unit won't work then...SBN RESONATE
Dude, you just seriously laid out the main issues not only with the MPC line but the Force as well. Once Akai brings the Force up to 3.0.7, it will be not only inline with the MPC Live in terms of features, but exceed it in many ways (if the rumors are to be believed). It's sad though, because you coming from the Push 2 and loving it, the Force should have been a legitimate option for you. When the next Force update comes out, i'd seriously see if you can test one out. It will be the best all in one solution that is on the market (if you don't want the build in battery or speaker)!
Recovering from an internal error is something I have regularly with my AKAI FORCE and AKAI MPC ONE. Beware that this can get the project file corrupted. You will get the message "Unable to load project". I reported these incidents every time. Never got a response. This problem exists since early firmware versions.
The simple solution for Akai would be to always have a backup file of the project that you can load. But Akai chose not to acknowledge this problem. Project files are really tiny files, they don't contain the source data. TIP: always create a backup yourself.
I have just purchased mine. A little on the pricey side compared to offerings by Bondara and Uberkinky but what the hell. My wife will be forty soon and still hasn't gotten a clone of my phallus after 15 years of marriage. The one thing that got me here to choose this one is that it glows in the dark when set of which will be great fun after a few beers and strip off in the dark. Warranty is also a box to tick and my so many with multiple choices but at the end of the day it is the euphoria once she has arrived that gets the thumbs up. Has anyone got the recipe for creamed beef? No I am not referring to curtains - just missing chow down with the North Carolina massive. Speaking of which, I must give ashville a visit for a matriarch dark edition. Top video clive, as always. BTW. We got a live contact goin on overhead. Let nova scotia know they may have to park somewhere else for a while. Catch ya soon. Much love from a limey.
at the end - you need to turn on automation - upper right hand side it's the green icon labeled R. Click it and it changes to red with a W. That allows you to record automation when you hit overdub. Just remember to turn it off again.
@Ricky - regarding your sample playback being messed up in the browser at the beginning.. It’s because you have sync and warp on in the audition settings and the sample is trying to sync to your project BPM. Try turning that off - it’ll play back fine in the browser audition.
Thanks for this! I hope you do a few more videos, maybe showing a bit more of the shortcuts or different ways of doing things with the MPC Live 2! *In order to add automation, turn the Green R in the top right to a Red W
I just picked this up myself this past Friday. Main reason was portability. I was pleasantly surprised with the speaker. A bit heavy for portability but it will work for me. I've already picked up some ideas from you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a ways to go but I like it so far.
The only time I got that "MPC Recovered From An Internal Error" message was when I went to Controller Mode with the MPC 2.0 Software, and it got stuck on the "Looking For Computer" even tho the Project Folders populated in the Documents window. Like I was able to click on the project I was working on,but that "Looking for Computer" never went away ont e screen of the MPC Live, then I disconnected it and re-powered it up,then that "Recovered from Internal Error" came up then went away. Also on another note: Akai is probably going to debut the MPC XL at this upcoming NAMM Show, and I'm willing to bet that they are going to blow out the RAM to at least 16 GB and increase the Internal memory to a TB and include all of the VST's that are in the MPC Key 61 along with other features.
Don’t worry too much for cpu load. You can always resample if needed. And for the effect you can use internal send/return to not use for example 5 time a reverb and just send to an internal effect which carry multiple signal. I’m sure you will enjoy it a lot ! I will never go back to mpc 1000 jjos. It was great but, the new one are definitely good and do lots more !
Awesome video, man. I love your attitude; you have such a teachable spirit, and that creates a very safe-feeling atmosphere for those trying to learn. Also - you have the cleanest-looking website of all time, haha. See you later, oscillator 😎.
I know 16 gig seems like enough, but just wait until you feel the pleasure of loading a 100G library of whole mp3 discographies on the internal HDD along with another 100G of drum and sound samples for later use wherever you are. It's addicting. Between SD card and SSD, I have half a terabyte of storage and it's luxurious, lol. I just pull up whole tracks and chop through them. I'm still on Live 1, haven't grabbed the 2 yet... speaker is making me think tho... I've personally yet to see any CPU messages in my 3-4 years or so with the machine.
Awesome, yea, i've been going to town recording a TON of samples and loops, and programs and i think i might actually max 16gb haha. Thanks for the CPU info Tommy, truly appreciate you coming by.
I've only owned my MPC One for a week, but so far I've arranged a complete song with lots of fx on the track, program and even pad level, and 7-8 tracks with 6 synth plugins (bass, subbass, arp, pads, lead, lead 2) and playing at the same time, along with some XYFX and filter automation - and the CPU is peaking at 36%. My guess is that it quickly reaches roundabout that level of CPU usage and stays there because it needs it to power the virtual synths. Adding 10 more synths of the same kind probably won't effect the CPU much. So, I don't think CPU is an issue in practice, though I suppose you can always flatten down samples etc if you end up pushing it a bit too hard. Anyway, I thought I'd share my fresh perspective. The CPU is so far a non-issue. :)
Thanks for the shout out bro :D
I haven't had any issues with the computing power at all actually.
Good to see you here, dude! Love your videos 💪
Such a great feature and I use this method instead of selecting recent projects on startup
i cannot find any information how to do this. Is it possible on standalone ?
regarding folks' concern about CPU usage: I have left mine on all day loading samples, building drums, using plugins, etc without issue. the mp can handle it. plus a few of the of the issues that occurred here are firmware version-specific.
I have the same MPC Live MKII Retro Edition for 6 months already, all the issues I faced actually turned out to be user errors, this thing is a beast
That’s basically where my head is at right now haha. Thanks Nicks for the reassurance
I've had the OG since launch and that was my issue and still will be my issue often. Discovering what all the buttons I don't understand do years later really feels foolish but it keeps the MPC around.

everyone, remember the touch screen is robust on purpose because when you're in a real setting playing a set, you're naturally gonna press everything with more force than when sitting in your bedroom with headphones on. like an ATM screen: built to be abused. if it were as pressure-sensitive as an ipad, that would lead to even more incorrect buttons pressed when there's a PA blasting behind u while playing your mpc. for example around 9:50 once Ricky starts jamming he's pressing the pads much harder than earlier on the touch screen. On this series of MP, the screen can also be played like the pads and thus, needs to be durable. enjoy the new MP's
Take the screen protector off, much smoother.
A really good point!

@@raywill9149 You made a good purchase. I have the One and can confirm!
man the prices for a used MPC X dropped to around 800-900€ wtf O_O
i bought my mpc live 2 around 2020 for around 1000€ and yesterday i saw the prices for used mpc x...
He did mention it. Just not details.
Yo I can’t find the time stretch option in settings since the they release the new firmware version ..

“Signing up for a credit card at Macy’s” I laughed at this interestingly particular and accurate example that allowed me to exactly know what you’re talking about 😂😂😂😂
CPU throttling could be due to running on batteries? Try plugging it in and see how the CPU runs then.
Yes we should have an update with the option to remove all the factory crap.
Yea the I’m honestly surprised how well the built-in synths sound!
Thanks for writing all this out Corrosive!
Counter argument the x goes with the klingon bird of prey aesthetic of the kaossilators.
I’ve no idea what is going on with so many MPC users having these issues. I literally haven’t had one single problem with my MPC One. I had a few minor bugs with my old MPC X on 2.6 and 2.7 and definitely the software has been buggy, much more than standalone.
Same here, not having any issues at all...not even the cpu spike...my one is good. Sorry that your dealing with this...
@Tubedigga I've got issues on standalone on my X. eg chopping up breaks & Q links not functioning correctly.
@@ceciliafbrown373 Try and reset the factory settings from the preferences menu. It might help.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thanks buddy!
9:05 Fix: Your sample audition is set to warp. you want that off trust me. it auto warps everything you hear to the tempo for some reason
When I heard that, I kinda dug it. I can sample my sampler to another sampler type syuff.
I’ve had the MPC Live 1 since 2018; never had a single issue with the CPU. I’ve used it for some live sets but mostly production and I use a lot of plugins and tracks with no issues
That weirdness you’re experiencing with the samples is time stretch being automatically applied
1. class compliant audio interfaces
2. the effects section (mother ducker for sidechain and and the sp1200 mode [not the 12 bit ring]
3. hype synth (oh my god amazing)
4. phono preamp
5. sound design with drums
6. portamento with 808s
7. drum synth (christ its so good, it just lacks a waveform view)
8. automation with effects
also, please try to pair this with an sp 404. it's amazing.
Amazing🙌🏻
As for MPC, I had the live 1 and currently own and use the X heavily.
I like the use of the classic Akai logo on the device.
I used to run my mpc beats through a Roland sp404 just for the effects(not good for making actual beats) and got some really dope sounds out of it..
Would love a Compact Creations with the MPC Live and the record player!

It's great.
I’ve been learning my way around the Live myself and I feel you on the “how did I do that thing I just did?” Glad to know it’s not just me :)
Hahaha! And the the inevitable.. “how do I get that to go away 🤔 “
Didn’t know that with deleting in the grid editor. I will try it since editing with the touch screen fells a bit laggy
LOL, I should have read all the comments before I posted. Nice work!
Very useful tip, thanks
@9:01 that middle button that says "audition" is a drop down menu with the option to "sync" the sample with your projects tempo. As a default tempo, the mpc can confuse 1/8th notes with 1/16th notes, making some samples play bask SUPER fast.
This is the answer!

PS If my English wasn’t the best, sorry! 😂😂
Big up Marlow. Great to see his channel growing 🤟🏾
Thought you would never ... this thing really rocks.
Lol i can still hear some hesitancy in his voice
super happy that Akai is still providing meaningful updates on their MPCs
i have a MPC one, an octatrack, a polyend tracker.
Your tracker crashes? You must be making movie scores 😂
- open empty project
- sys > edit sequence
- insert bars before bar one, with your new time sig. I used 5/4
- delete the bars that fall after the bars you just inserted.
- then MENU Browse to find a kit
- load kit....
@@_thevaporz ya AKAI needs to do something about their website. It’s super bad. Everything else is great :)
We don't know as they were not metered so we didn't worry.
beyond true haha, it was probably at 98% all the time
I use it to control a Minitaur and a Minilogue XD. It's super awesome about it. I basically just keep the MPC plugged in and controller the synths like you'd control an internal device and, eventually, once I'm all arranged, I'll record it just before final mixing. Works amazingly well.
Sounds like a super capable compact setup
Minitaur and digitone here 🤙
Is it possible to control CCs with an LFO? Synced lfo on the filter of the taur for some wobble action...
in the top right hand corner of the screen you’ll see your automation button, next to the cpu button. To record automation just make sure it’s set to W for write. You might have had it set to R for read when it wasn’t working during the end of the video. Once you get around to saving templates for your workflow, you’ll fly through this thing- especially coming from Akai legacy 🤙🏼
I feel so in the way of this machine 😫 hahahah
@@RickyTinez that’s how i felt my first few weeks with it, you’ll be good trussssttt 👍🏼👍🏼
Just found your channel....You're so refreshing and calm and draws me into what you're saying. I love your channel and ur my new fav! You keep it real and I'm very impressed....
It just hit home & I was LMAO @ 25:55
"Dude this things crazy. It does too many things !" It is an unbelievable piece of equipment to say the least & im learning something new everytime I use it.
Good video Ricky I really enjoyed it Bro.
Thanx
Thank you for the honest review. I appreciate that
Your soothing voice lets me run this video in the background even though I dont own an mpc.
The MPC Live is a beast on its own. Love the ease of use, especially while being portable.
Xt power portable battery works well with the One
RTFM
Exactly, it’s simple to use . I made a beat 10 minutes after I used it for the 1st time ..
Hi Ricky! From today‘s perspective: would you buy mpc live 2 or maschine + for live performances?
Where can I get that little MPC model 4000 toy that you have in the video? It’s DOPE!!!!
I have maxed out my CPU with very long samples (more than 10 mins) and audio tracks with tape delay.
Right! i've been using them for yeeeaarrsss and i love them
No issues with cpu using mpc live original for three years now.
Really down to see your version of a live set on the Live 2 man, I'm sure I'm not alone on that.
Wish they’d release an SDK for it. Seems like a great platform for development.
i noticed you can browse through the plugins filtering by manufacturer. i thought that was weird, since all plugins are made by akai. Maybe that’s a foreshadowing of akai opening the platform to other manufacturers?!
@@unknown9274 The desktop version has the Air effects as separate VST. But I believe hardware version has them statically linked with app.
Awesome video! Would love to see you explore the MPC Live2 in a live context!
The automate button is on the touch screen at the top right. If your tap that, any modulation of an effect or filter is captured.
You got the legendary Mpc Live2! 🧔🏽♂️😏 It’s amazing. It does that sometimes but it’s not that big deal. Glad you got it and you would love it.
at the end - you need to turn on automation - upper right hand side it's the green icon labeled R.
MPC don't need no midi cables, USB midi through a hub now! You could even hook up ALL your gear!
Yep, I use a mio xl hooked up to the mpc and it’s awesome.
It was great but, the new one are definitely good and do lots more !
got a great feel for the instrument. great camera and audio work. thanks for sharing
