JEEP XJ Repairs! Bent Sway Bar / Engine Servicing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The sway bar has been in need of some reinforcements since I hit a pot hole at high speed and bent the arm on it. Its been on my jobs list for a while. So before I start hitting snow banks this winter I'm going to try and cross it off my list in this video.
Fixing some of the diesel and oil leaks on the engine is also a must do! Since I rebuilt the injectors its seems i've made one of them worse. Its been poring diesel down the side of the engine so its got to be replaced. Hopefully by the end of this episode I will only have the NP231 to fix which unfortunately requires a full rebuild.....
It seems like the neglected issues on my Jeep are all finally failing simultaneously. Hopefully It will be ready to roll again as soon as the T case isnt sounding a washing machine full of marbles.
Thanks for all your support!
Mike

Mike I fully understand exactly what you're talking about. You fix you paint you repeat, fix paint repeat. They are a labor of love. My XJ is exactly like yours but with the 4.0 that I have taken apart rebuilt. And the Jeep itself I have touched and rebuilt or replaced every part of this thing. So the Lil Monster which I've had since 2014 it is a 2001 I will continue to be under, be in, and be around just like you. We will never get rid of them. Because then what will we do? Lol😂 I enjoy each and every video and I also learn a lot. Take care mate.
I'm glad I'm not alone, I feel somewhat less insane now for starting this channel and hearing from like-minded soles around the world. I must admit there are some jobs I just don't want to revisit, like body work and such, but the mechanical stuff I can sort of forgive and understand better.
All the power to you on your XJ, and thanks for watching and the comment.
My husband and I watch your videos every week (except when you’re on vacay)and we love your videos. My hubby likes all of the shop stuff you talk about. I don’t know anything about vehicles or jeeps-I watch for your sense of humor. We both enjoy your humor. So thank you!!
Thanks for watching! My humour is pretty terrible, but I'm glad you guys are enjoying it all. Hopefully, the jeep will be up and running soon, but in the meantime, the old 4.0 shall take the stage.
Thanks again guys!
yes Mike you will be here again and we will be with you watch you work wile we give input from around the world
That's somewhat comforting in a what, haha 😄 sharing the madness from Sweden! Thanks for watching
It’s the cycle of life Mike! It’ll never end until we do 🤣
Never give up my friend! It's our destiny to keep our xjs alive. Winning is where we can make it through the weekend trip! 😂
It's called "testing to destruction." Eventually, if you live long enough, you eliminate the problem by replacing every relevant component.
I fully agree i actually worry when my jeep runs perfectly watching your vids push me to work on mine and im really looking forward to the 4.0 build as i want to rig mine up like yours
It's suspicious when everything is working fine for too long. I start to look for problems and occasionally find the jeeps' next problem brewing before failure.
Thanks for watching!
I plan on doing some solo winter camping this year and I’m 50:50 with the RTT. I just built those drawers which means my sleeping platform would be about 5-6” higher leaving less room inside, but it’s doable. Or I take the RTT out but when snow wheeling it’s nice to reduce weight and not have to deal with taking it off and drying it afterwards like you talked about.
The only RTT I’ve seen that could work with a family would be those iKamper style fold outs again, basically a King Size floor plan.
I wonder if we’ll ever see an overland trailer build on this channel 😉
I've taken the tent off now, and I honestly love how the jeep handles and looks. I think I shaved off 90kg I calculated. Crazy!
12kg of that will go back on in solar panels, but it's certainly less top heavy without the wind noise and drag. I've started on the platform, and it's a tricky one. Not as much head room, and I probably won't be able to sit up in the jeep while in bed, which I won't like. I guess I can sit in the passenger seat 😆
It's tradeoff, but the tent is becoming challenging with mould, plus it's too small for us all, so it's sort of lots of its long-term sustainability. What do you think you will do?
Once u become numb to the endless cycle u are one with the jeep the jeep is you , you are the jeep through and through lol
9:50 I had this happen to my mint 1979 Ford F-150. 7" lift, 38x15.5x15 Radial TSL Swampers. My friend builds lifted trucks, how we met, and the worse idea he had was to build the sht out of the 351M engine. 4spd NP435 trans, 205TC, 9" rear and Dana 44 front. The more I built one thing everything else was blowing up. Engine mounts, trans mounts, trans to TC adapter in 13 pieces, had to put in a SHD clutch kit in, standard was worthless. Split the T18 trans in half so swapped a 435 in, two 9" rears. Huge list... Fix one issue and gain more. I should have swapped an auto C6 trans and it would have taken a lot of violence out of it.
**Sorry for writing a book about it.
Wow, that's an incredible build by the sounds of it. I guess once you start chasing the weaknesses, it's a rabbit hole that almost never ends. Hopefully, you can get to a place where you know the weaknesses or plan them so they are easy to swap. I hope that making my jeep lighter it will help reduce the damage.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness I didn't expect you to respond to that. Might mean nothing to but it means a lot. I take pride in everything I touch/build and I know you do as well.
Huge respects...
Wow ok thanks for responding, I follow your channel and constantly watch your videos. Love the camping and repair videos. I have a 2001 XJ sport with the OLD MAN EMU 4.5 lift with 35's just installed the ebay front and rear bumper I'll keep you posted on my progress 👍🏾

I found it. He still makes it. I went through the worm hole or Ebay and eventually there it was.

Or is there this one. Similar but more expensive.
Really enjoyable to watch as always. You provide motivation for me to work on my own stuff that requires constant maintenance (mainly old tractors and boats). Sometimes I think I waste a lot of time redoing the same stuff. But probably most people are the same I guess. We have similar workshop setups, ie mine isn’t quite big enough either. Always have to move a load of stuff of the way to do one job, then move it all back again for the next, then repeat many times. I have solved many weeping seals on my tractors by using hylomar blue non hardening gasket dressing on every seal or o ring or gasket. Even those that don’t call for any monkey spunk to be used. I’ve found it to be very good over the years.
I used to use Hylomar Blue. It's decent stuff, although I've not seen it here in Sweden. I used to use that stuff everywhere.
Yeah, the workshop is small, and it gets messy very quickly when I'm into a project. It certainly doesn't stop me, like you, but I clean it constantly. I'm glad you enjoy the videos and happy screwing on your own machines!
If you never use it, it’ll never break. It’s definitely worth it
I still miss the old channel Mike, but I do enjoy the new one! It looks like your living your dream. 😁
MCQ for life 😂
You are exactly right Mike! Strengthening the weakest link in a chain just means another link has become the weakest.
My Truck-Camper setup is the same way. Break, Fix, Repair, REPEAT. Constantly.
Thanks for making your suffering so enjoyable to watch, Mike.
Hi Mike. Excited to hear your going to try sleeping inside the Jeep this winter! Less weight on the roof/jeep should also help in the snow.
I know your diesel heater from the engine blows in through the passenger footwell. So that should help with moisture.
I sleep inside my Jeep Mike all year. And condensation is still an issue. Especially in the winter. I have those plastic covers on the rear windows. So I can drop both rear windows 2” without any rain coming in. And then use bug nets that fit over the rear doors. But condensation is still a problem. So I’ve decided to try a 3” vent in my side rear aluminum window panel. (Like your gull wings but mine don’t open).
Then have a 3” almost silent computer fan mounted to the back of the closable vent. Running off my portable power station. To blow air out of the Jeep all night. And air will get pulled in from my rear windows. I’m hopeful it will work just like a bathroom fan!? To help keep condensation to a minimum from bigfoots heavy breathing 😉
I will report back over the winter if it works. I’m still in the process of building in the vent/fan setup.
Cheers 🍻 Mike.
I would love to sleep in mine all year round. I don't think I will be able to hack the 24-hour daylight and flies in the summer thought. I will probably use the awning room or just make some mosquitos net thing inside. I will see how it goes next summer.
It's interesting to hear about condensation. It must be a constant challenge. I have a silent computer fan, although it's not installed yet.
My entire back window will soon be aliminium, so that's where it will probably go.
With some windows down and the diesel heater on it will be fine, but I personally hate sleeping with it on for safety and for noise.
You will have to report back on your condensation when you install the fan.
Hi Mike. Yeah I forgot about your summer 24hrs of daylight! You also mentioned about the mosquito’s which are ridiculous at times in your area. And the need to keep an area clear of them. So I think in that regard the RTT is still probably the best option for the summer. As the awning room you’re in and out all day. Especially if camping with the kiddos.
Summers are getting hotter and hotter over here. So Im actually now sleeping outside sometimes in the summer in the awning room. As it cools down faster than the Jeep.
In regard to condensation. It’s arguable at its worst on my side rear window aluminum panels. As they conduct the most cold from the outside. So I’m thinking of putting some thin foam on them to help reduce the condensation. You might need to consider that for your rear window panel. Then it’s the glass where the condensation builds. I’m sure it’s everywhere behind the headliner etc. I just can’t see it of course. I’m going to do a roof rack mount diesel heater setup. Exactly like your old setup on your tire carrier. And plumb that in through my aluminum side windows. Much like you only for initial warming and to help deal with condensation in the morning. I also can’t sleep with that on. Noise and it’s a potential safety risk. Co2 etc.
Impressive amount of patience and commitment.
9:40 good, more videos for us :D
Maybe try filling the cover with some diesel fuel on the bench, overnight, before you install it, that way you can make sure it's not leaking and also it will make sure you don't have any hidden cracks.
My favorite channel Mike! 👍
Thanks mate!
awesome as allways. you make working on cars look so enjoyable......
It can be a lot of fun, but also a total load of shite lol 😆 mostly fun, though. Thanks for watching.
great video, greetings from germany
It's a Jeep thing... And I love it !!🇦🇺👍
I always enjoy your videos, thanks mate.
I did enjoyed the video, as always :)
Great episode 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Great job. Informative and entertaining.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Mike, my Girlfriend told me you just need a Beard and your Problems will go away 😊👍
8:40
"Faustus: How come it then that thou art out of Hell?
Mephistophilis: Why this is Hell, nor am I out of it : Think'st thou that I who saw the face of God, and tasted the eternal joys of Heaven, Am not tormented with then thousand Hells, In being deprived of everlasting bliss?"
Nice vid... Mate.
Will the tire "width" increase once its on the ground and supporting the full weight of the vehicle? I know nothing about cars or tricking out Jeeps, but idk if tires expand once they're off of the jack.
It's a fair point, but it shouldn't factor in this setup. The tire will mostly be fatter at the bottom when contacting the ground. So technically, the profile should be much different up top. But I've been wrong before, and before that 😆
Mike where did you get the front bumper with the jeep name on it , I would like to get one.
I bought it in the uk from Ebay. A Polish guy makes them, but I can no longer find him.
Knowing what you know now with the jeep what would you redo and what you leave out
That question has a long answer. I can make a Q&A about it for you.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness thanks that would be great
Bro you bent the sway arms because the panhard bar is to short for the long arm so when the axle drop it goes away to much to the drivers side that's why the arms bent. Maybe you should put at least One limit strap in the middle of the axle to help avoid that axle SIDE movement.
It bent because of the impact of the pot hole at high speed alongside the steep link angle that put side pressure on the arm. The side movement is taken up by the hiem joint, and it's not enough to bend anything. I know this to be true because I've tested all of this with and looked at it all.
Might not have bent if it didn't have the superficial cut outs.
Yeah, those holes didn't help. Hopefully, now it stays as is. It feels much stiffer when driving.
See you in 6 months again?
Do you not get notifications for each Sunday? I didn't quite understand the comment as you might just be joking, and I missed something 😅
First!
Mick I would love to see driving Land Cruiser 80 series
If you drive down hill the air gap in cylinder head no 1 will disappear :)
Luv ya, cool vid as always.
so, not sure if it applys to that engine, but on some engines you put the timing cover on, then put the balancer on. use the balancer to line up the seal and then tighten the cover so the seal is centered on the balancer.
Ah, that's clever, I never thought of that. It might work on this one, but I wouldn't trust it in this case. Thanks for the info!
Mike, if you tip the antifreeze bottle onto its side when filling up it allows more air to escape = less splash but great work 👌
Damn Mike. The 10 minute mark got existential and metaphorical and really is true about life. And ain’t it grand? Hovering in that space of measurable progress against the immeasurable infinite is where we should all aspire to be.
It certainly feels true, although a choice I'm making knowingly. I do enjoy it, although I understand it's ultimately not that important in the grand scheme of life. But saying this it brings me great joy and satisfaction, and I've begun sharing my adventures with my almost five year old boy. He brings meaning to everything to me. Anyway, onto the next project, haha 😄
Thank you for watching and for the comment
Been watching you since MCQbushcraft! I'm looking into starting this as a hobby, despite your warnings. Going to buy a wrangler to build it out similar! I need it for my quest to find bigfoot.
Despite my warnings, it's a lot of fun and good if you enjoy learning mechanics. I personally really enjoy the variety of hands-on work involved in it all, plus the adventures and using your builds.
A wrangler is a nice choice, and it should get you to those remote locations where Bigfoot likes to lurk. My personal recommendations would be to weld up a 1/2" thick chastity belt for your first expedition. Once he smells fresh meat, he will come in hot but should get bored with you once he's been trying to chew the belt off for at least an hour.
I have recently found your channel and have been watching your videos from Australia and although l own a GU Patrol l find your content very interesting and inspiring. I like your trip videos your hummer and you working on your Jeep, pulling it apart messing with it and putting it back together hopefully for the better. Compliance rules are very strict over here and we can't do the modifications you guys can or l would be in a Jeep too.
Thanks for tuning in and for watching! I really like GU Patrols, probably a better choice than a Jeep. They are rare and expensive here. I'm pushing the mods to the limit, I think, although not the lift and tires as you can do as you will with that here. It's all of the small things they tend to look closer at. But with the roof tent off, they will like that more as it lightens up the rig.
😊 Appreciate you sir 🙂
Thanks for watching!
5:45-5:54 lol bro you had me cracking up. Wtf... 😂
A moment of clarity before permanently welding up the uncertainty 😆
@WorkshoptoWilderness lol, it was priceless. Keep up the good work.. you and maybe 2 other people on UA-cam keep my motivation for my xj.. thank you for that. Cheers!
Love watching your videos. I got job to do in my jeep grand Cherokee mvmotori 3.0diesel wk2 - water pump, thermostat, sensor and probably air suspension compressor and instead do it I am watching you do the thing…… I have no will now to go to garage and work on it. Zero will. Will need to call tomorrow to work and advice them that I will not be there for rest of week do to my pinky pain😂😂😂😂😂
Well, all the power to you! I know the feeling all too well. It's hard when the drive is gone for a while. I feel like I'm almost there on my diesel. Although the 4.0 is decades away 😆 I have little drive for it, but I will try.
I hope it all goes well on the 3.0. I imagine it's pretty similar to the 2.5. I almost bought a 3.0 for a cheap price. Can you find mechanical pumps for them? I often wondered what it would be like to tune one up.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness It is a good engine even I slash it online on forums before lol. My model is A630DOHC you can remap it to Maseratti map 275HP and 600nm but what for?. I got 241hp and 550nm and fuel consumption with 285/65/18 mudterrain Tyres around 11-12l per 100km in my teuchter ride. The car overall amaze me how capable it is off road. I wish only it had a proper on demand lockers front and rear. I got lsd at the rear which I can control using obdJscan but each year I need to change the lsd motor due to how it is build and expose to water. Overall it’s a jeep one day something work other day not so much if coming to electrics. I got motorbike for moving around so transport is not a issue the "will to do" is the issue. I really like your videos and push them to my colleagues in Poland who off roading in the same jeeps like yours, just to prove them that this engine can do something more than brake down lol. Lots off XJs is there but mostly with 4.0 engine. You will discover new world with this engine…. If I can suggest something move to Nissan Patrol swap engine and trans lol to m57 set and you will have mad machine.
