Winter Jeep Camping Going Wrong In -25C

  • Extreme Cold -25c Solo Wilderness Jeep Camp.
    Temperatures are extremely low at the moment and daylight hours are at there lowest. I venture out to one of my favourite spots to spend a couple of nights camping in my Jeep Cherokee XJ. Temperatures started at around -13c and dropped steadily to -25c in the early hours of the morning. These kind of temperatures are extreme for camping and my setup is obviously taken to its limits, including my camera gear.
    Water freezes, gas bottles don't gasify well, batteries read 0 percent even though they are fully charged. My setup was never designed for such temperatures but for me personally I enjoy experiencing these difficult conditions to see where the cracks are.
    Unfortunately one of the main areas I need to improve on is the insulation under my sleep mat which I underestimated due to my previous camping experiences with the 8.1 R value on the EXPED MegaMat Duo 10.
    Despite trying to insulate under the mat with the what I had with me I couldn't fend of the cold for longer than a couple of hours. Insulation is needed under the mat and I have since solved this issue with a thick thermal layer which can be removed and stored in the summer.
    Thanks for watching.

    I think this video surpassed everything you've done so far - and i have watched your productions from the UK to Sweden. Soooo impressed with the atmosphere you created around the full moon, fire light, aurora borealis and music. To my mind that is something that is difficult to recreate anywhere else but in the high arctic, but you need the essential creative genius to make it happen. I have the same RTT and it is an excellent piece of kit. I think someone else has already said that you should have kept the original foam mat as an underlay for the air mat. Additionally, you could look at installing the inner quilt that is an option for the tent; strangely enough you did mention it in one of your earlier videos which made me investigate fitting it to my tent here inn the UK. Unfortunately, mine lacks the attachment hooks so that is not something I can use. However, why not take a lesson from our antipodean cousins in OZ who regularly use electric under blankets in their winters. But you would need a working battery to power it; it would work with your original one I suspect. Thanks again.

      Thank you, I really appreciate the comment. I really enjoy filming and trying to give the viewer a feeling like they are there or feel some kind of emersion into the environment. The tent is fantastic and I have made it worse by stripping it of its original mat.... I have added that mat back in with the inflatable on top and a mylar blanket under the mattress. Hopefully this will help a great deal as its added about two inches. Its stupid really as I have so much camping ger at home. I should have at least taken out another mat with me as a backup.
      Anyway thanks you again for watching!

    One year watching Rally Sweden in February we were sleeping outside under the open sky down to -25°C even waking up one morning with a 5cm thin layer of fluffy snow on the sleeping bag. But one night it got down to -35°C, felt it was to cold so had to be "a coward" sleeping sitting in the car running at idle the whole night with the heater at max the whole night.
    An old diesel doesn't heat up much at idle in -35°C conditions 😬
    I absolutely understand why you go out camping during the winter, it is a magical time of the year that everyone should experience, especially on a full moon night.
    In Norway there are many places where you can go from cabin to cabin, either in the low lands or up in the mountains and the cabins are open to everyone so pack your skies and set out on a full moon adventure in the mountains :D

    Beautiful video mate, and you are def not talking crap :-) I have a campercar with good gear and I would like to do some more wild camping. However, the anxiety of being alone in the wilderness has until now prevented me from doing so. I shall though take up the challenge as you are indeed showing the way, thanks :-)

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +3

      I don't see many talk about the fear of being alone in the wilderness on UA-cam but its a reality I try to be open about. Obviously sleeping in a city center as a homeless person is far scarier but I cant help but feel a gut instinct at times that steers me away from certain places. I try not to ignore it regardless of how my rational brain talks me out of it.
      Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    I just came to the end of your video where you are talking about the cold coming from underneath. I could suggest you get a 10cm self inflating mattress, as still standing air is insulating whereas blankets are not 🙂 Your body heat will help keeping that small volume of air warm. Whatever blanket you put underneath will not keep you warm as it will be compressed by your body weight. I wouldn't go for solid foam mattresses either. The -20C is not too bad, I have been sleeping out in -33C in northern Greeland and kept warm. I have also been out in -63C with chill factor. But I do admit that it turns around the -20C, that is where you feel that 'grip' on your head 🙂 Any advice needed of keeping warm in extreme cold, please reach out as I have 7 years of experience from the Arctic. In fact, sleeping directly on the snow but sheltered from the wind would have kept you more warm that night, Best, Bjorn

    A few options for your next try, a solar generator and electric blanket. Second option a diesel heater, just got one and it works very well. I plan to use it ice fishing here in Minnesota USA. We can get to -50F in the northern part of the state, so we sleep in a trailer made for ice fishing. Ice can get 3 feet / 1 meter thick very safe for vehicles.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому

      Some sound options. Although I don't think the solar generator will work with the lack of light. My friend has a setup like that and it bearly works in winter. I have an 750wh lithium battery with a diesel heater on the truck. I mentioned the battery died and had to be returned for warranty before this outing so I was back to my old crappy battery which failed in the cold and the diesel heater wouldn't start.
      We get it here with the ice being a meter or more. Then the ice racing starts in town which is fun.

    I also use the Megamat. What I do because of my back is that I kept a 3’’ high density foam that came with the tent under the Megamat. It work very well as an air block. That’s the thing in winter, safety comes first. Ok second after tea/coffee 😁.

    You for sure have watched the informal documentarys: "Trolljegeren", and "Troll"? Very good to know this stuff when stumbling around in their territory.
    I would have stuffed alot of pine twigs, green ones between the jeep roof and the tent floor, maybe snow around to keep the air still in there. For later trips i would have had insulation mat there, the ones with yellow plastic around. Also, you can not beat reindeer hide (fur?) under your body. And over.. everywhere.

    Good decision on getting out of there, those kind of temps aren't to be roughing it! Might be a bit of a cowboy move but could shoving a load of ferns/pine foliage in-between the bottom of the rooftop tent and the roof of the XJ help a bit? Or grab a heated mattress topper when you have your power source back 👌

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness

      Ah no worries, I'm glad you enjoy them. Hopefully the next one will be a bit more successful haha. Its that air gap as you say that's the problem. I thought about packing snow in there but it's so cold the snow is like granules and it doesn't hold together. The wind sort of blows it about but spruce bows could work too.
      I was too cold and tired to attempt it to be honest. Once the cold got into me I just wanted to get warm no matter the cost. I guess I could make a blanket insert that packs under it all. That would probably work well

    Mike - I think it was a rational decision given the conditions and the amount conduction loss you were experiencing. What about adding a layer of reflectix, even a double layer to slow down that process. Hello to Meg and MaxMcQ 🙌.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому

      I managed to get it sorted with another double mat and some Mylar under my mat. Its a lot warmer but its actually stil a slight problem and it all depends on the weather. The air gap between the jeep and the tent is the weak spot. I have an old army sleep bag that I will stuff between the roof and tent which will probabaly make a huge difference. Thanks for watching, Merry Christmas to you and the family!

    Yeah Mike, you yourself mentioned that you should sleep on the ground, in the owning room. I just thought when I was watching you, that you should sleep by the fire on the ground, on the matress. But the point is, that it is very dangerous to sleep by the fire nowadays in these modern synthetic sleeping bags and synthetic jackets, on synthetic mattresses, under synthetic lean to tarps. Those can melt on you, those scan cauth fire... here comes in the picture the wool blanket you mentioned. That cannot cauth fire. In the 19th century cowboys in the US had only a canvas bedroll and two wool blankets per a person, and they easily coped with the minus temperatures on the prairie. If there was really cold, they slept around the fire, but their canvas/wool/leather gear cannot cauth fire (see Dee Brown's historical books about the Wild West). Sleeping beside a fire is a fantastic experience and because of it, I am experimenting with these old school materials and methods lately. Something else: I always have in my first aid package that foldable emergency heat reflecting folia. If you wrap that around you, or put it underneath you in the sleeping bag, that can reflect back surprisingly much of your body heat. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video and your utmost honesty, as always!

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +1

      I think the coldest I've slept in a wool blanket by a long log fire was -7c. We did an course some years back when I was an instructor. That kind of setup, although simple and romantic, has its limitations. I think I did a video on it on the other channel. I camped in my wool blanket setup for years. I use to sleep on spruce bows. I abandoned it for a bivi setup due to the issues with moisture, packability and weight when wet. It's different in a 4wd of course because you can carry a lot but I can also carry a much more comfortable setup.
      -25c is too cold for basic wool blanket setup, even with a fire it won't be a sound night. You need to tend to the fire and build a reflective barrier behind your setup to get some minimal radiative heat. I guess I feel like I've done my fair share of roughing although I still practice many old skills to keep my hand in. Thanks for watching and for the comment

    BUT the second lake just gives me the willies for some reason. If I stand near it I feel very uncomfortable and won't even camp near it.
    Maybe some kind of ancestral memory kicking in or evolved distrust of a location that could harbour danger.

    Avid Carp Thermatech Heated Sleeping Bag. Runs off any power bank. Probably not what you're after but it popped in my head so I just had to say about it.
    No idea if it would work in your situation but I'd try a 30mm or so layer of closed cell foam mechanics mats. It's what me and my daughter used in the tent before I got us camp beds. It worked far better than any sleeping mat at keeping the cold away from us. It is rock hard though but it was excellent at keeping us warm from freezing ground.
    You made the right choice by going home, you don't want to get ill just to prove a point.
    Regarding your power station, is there no way to install the previous firmware? It's possible the firmware you installed bricked it but there must be a way to sort it. Don't suppose it matters now though seeing as they're taking it back.
    That Firefox and campfire segment with that music was to die for.... Not from the cold though lol.
    I imagine you'll be better prepared next time. Its all a learning curve. In time you'll be the master of all weather conditions.
    The only thing I thought of at the time while watching you freeze was packing snow between the car roof and tent floor, sounds good but it might also be dumb, I really don't know. Oh and also using animal skins under the mat, just thinking out loud.
    Thank you for effort you put into filming the trip, I wholeheartedly appreciate it. Hats off to you.

    Great video, knowing when to call it is smart. 8 R factor is definitely not enough. Insulation board with reflective material may help.( may freeze also since up in air. I am now partial to extra wool blankets (good ones) totally changes bags R value. You need more nest material under you. I have found that an air mattress makes it worse ( you can’t produce enough heat to heat an air gap in those temps). All good content that others need to see

    Great video Mike! I've done tons of winter hammock camping ( Canada). There is something about passing the -20C that seems to make the management of the cold exponentially more difficult with every degree...and like you, its not the top which is problematic, but rather the bottom where my body is compressing the loft of my sleeping bag. My solution for ''comfort'' is doubling up on the underquilt. That extra pocket of air trap between the underquilts seems to make all the difference...and proper positioning so the wind doesn't go through my setup and take away all the air that my body warmed up. So I wonder, could you make an ''underquilt'' under your setup.

      I've added in some mylar to reflect the heat back up I to the mattress but in addition another 10cm of insulation under the mylar. In total its pretty thick and it should help but I still doubt that it will work for extended periods in such temperatures.

    I guess I am confused if Gollum has a semi you would hear him coming. Then it is easy just run out on the lake and when he drives the semi out after you he goes through the ice. problem solved. Now big foot that is a whole different deal. Here in north Idaho I aways carry two bags family size Oreos double stuff of course. Usually by the time he finishes the second bag he goes into a sugar coma and I just slip away. But be very careful if you meet him again he will want to share and thats when things go south.😁

    I cut us each a length of "Reflectix insulation" 24"x6'. It's great to have behind you while sitting around the fire. Then it helps under an airmat. I guess one way to look at it is R value is R value. But I think the ratio of your heat going in is far exceeded by the heat being extracted from the big mat you don't cover. An airmat is mostly covered by you and there is a lot less mass to heat. Reflectix, wool blanket and airmat works great.

    The roof top tents look tempting, but so darned expensive. Do you think it's better than the awning room you've got? Definitely a little faster to set up I guess.
    One of the best pieces of gear I've ever bought was a ridge crest foam sleeping pad. I bought it when I was 20 for backpacking when I was tougher. I'm in my 40's and it's still in decent shape. It's great to put under another pad to boost the R rating and comfort, you can also sit on it on rough terrain without fear of popping it or embers from a fire damaging it. It stays in the back of my truck all the time. In the summer I even set my groceries on it to insulate from the hot metal. It's even been used as a privacy screen by my daughter when she was 3-4 and sitting beside interstate on a training potty.

    • @WorkshoptoWilderness
      @WorkshoptoWilderness  Рік тому +1

      Yeah they cost a bit for sure. It's how much use you get out of it I suppose, although I got mine on sale so that was a bonus. The awning room would be warmer on the ground, although time consuming to setup and the plastic clips that hold it together have begun to shatter in the cold.
      Its also hard to peg down on frozen ground and the wind moves it about a lot. I mainly use to for longer durations and family outings.

    Hi Mike, friggin brilliant vid, I was captivated. You really conveyed the extreme cold challenges and the winter landscape to us. Totally get it about that unease vibe in certain spots when out camping…as for camera batteries dying… have you tried the ‘hothand sachets’ i used them on back of my camera ( admittedly it was not minus 20!) as for under bed freezing,…aagh…I am sure you will come up with a solution… not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but have you tried out a think lose wool under blanket ( like a 4 inch wool mattress topper?) also dodo 18mm floor insulation for campervan flooring.. just installed on my van. Anyway wishing you Meg and family a very Happy Christmas , stay safe… best wishes Vee

Ah no worries, I never knew how to suck an egg so good to get tips on anything really. I haven tried ‘hothand sachets’ and its a great idea! I have some in the basement so I will pack a handfull when I'm next out. I since made a insulated battery box which seems to be better but below -15c things start getting really tough.
      It was -35c today and my god everything just died. The LCD on my hero 5 just cracked as soon as I walked outside lol. I've packed a thick wool blanket and made some additions to the insulation in the tent.

Far from being more experienced than you, specially on that temperature range... but what that issue with the mattress brings to my mind was, back in the day in an older video, your surprised face when your lovely wife said that she prefers the foam mattress rather than these super rated thermarest... That being said, my question for you, thinking about what you had available, is: does that sitting pads that you had around the ice for fishing, wouldn't help to cope that? P.S.: I wouldn't concern with gollum, he probably got his balls frozen 10 degress ago.

That was a particularly special night for me in this video, amazing northern lights and a frozen arse due to my oversight on insulation under the roof tent. Good memory's though. Fortunately I addressed the insulation and can comfortably deal with -25c and perhaps even a bit below.
      Sleeping on the ground though is superior, and lighter. I backpack and use an MSR Tent and there is less effect from the wind. The RTT is just convenience and a compact footprint for me as its always flat and only ever as big as the jeep itself. Swags are unheard-of here. Are they raised camp beds inside a tent tunnel?
