You’re literally the only guy who makes good guides for mages in classic!!! Might be a lot to ask for but.. PLEASE UPLOAD MORE. Thanks for the awesome guide.
Edit 2: Now that we're into the phase, Fire is pumping with T8 4pc and also due to extra HS procs on any fights with cleave, so go fire if your arcane dps is suffering. I still recommend arcane for FL, iron council, and vezax if your guild is prog'ing on them or still is struggling with dps check on council. Edit: Sorry for late update to this. Gen Vezax: 100% arcane. If your guild is progressing on it and you need to carry DPS, only go to 3 stacks and use Mbarr as soon as it comes up. Save Iceblock of Mark for animus phase. Go up to 4 AB stacks for animus, but don't spam unless you know you have the mana for it. Also replace haste gear pieces with sp/crit since haste isn't needed on that fight as arcane. There's even a meme spec specifically for Gen Vezax if you really want to min/max the fight for your guild (definitely not needed tho). www.wowhead.com/wotlk/talent-calc/mage/23002523310003215032313250522-03-023003 Algalon: For Algalon, if you're struggling with damage as arcane then go fire. Algalon is a long fight with a lot of movement, and as arcane it requires a fair amount of optimization with IA and frost warding as well, so if that isn't working out for you, then go fire, as both arcane and fire can do well. As for the fire spec, I recommend having magic absorption for progression unless you have good gear with high stamina or your disc priest has your back. If the latter and magic absorption isn't needed, then any fire ST spec will do fine (i.e. you could go FFB or fire ttw, whichever spec is best with your gear and raid situation). Thorim: Same could be said for Thorim, fire or arcane, but I still think Arcane IA spec is better than fire on Thorim if you play it right. XT: I originally suggested Arcane for this because arcane burst can help with killing the heart without the need for heroism/lust, and thus heroism/lust could be used elsewhere in the fight to meet the insane dps check of the fight. Now after the nerf, there really is no advantage to being arcane. Either spec can do well here, but I think Fire will be the better choice here due to multi-dotting and cleaving of life sparks and the movement on the fight. There's a couple reasons fire is doing well on the logs. One is gear scaling, since T8 4pc is a lot stronger for fire than it is for arcane, so that's a huge boost there, and similarly for some other gear out of Ulduar. The other major part I'm seeing is that while the sims assume optimal play, that isn't what happens irl. It's a lot easier to play fire optimally than it is arcane. Ulduar fights are longer and have a lot of movement, which already closes the gap between arcane and fire, and you toss in mismanagement of mana, cooldowns, and not playing incanter's absorption spec correctly, and arcane performs quite poorly; while for fire, mana management isn't really a thing, cooldown management is very straight forward, and movement isn't nearly as punishing, while arcane requires some finesse to minimize movement's impact on DPS. All together this is definitely weighing down the average of arcane on some fights. That said, overall it doesn't change much. If you're progressing on fights than it's still good to have an arcane and fire spec so that you have arcane for Iron Council (since P3 dmg is all that matters on that fight, and no, on average fire cannot beat arcane burst in p3) and also Gen Vezax. If your guild has everything on farm at this point and doesn't need your dmg in P3 of Iron Council then sure you can drop fire all together. _________________ **NEW** Arcane Algalon Spec - IA www.wowhead.com/wotlk/talent-calc/mage/23002503010033015032313250532-03-023023001_001wr211q1b21q1y31rj441rj551kd8 ua-cam.com/video/8EgBr9K_0PQ/v-deo.html After killing Algalon a few times this weekend I'm convinced this is the spec to go. IA+Frost Warding is just too good, and while you can get Frost Warding with Prismatic Cloak, Prismatic Cloak just didn't seem necessary and the extra dmg from IA really makes Fire Ward always a good GCD. Take this with a slight grain of salt as I had top notch healers, but I don't think you should have survivability issues with the above spec as long as you use Stoneblood Flask. If you're still having issues though, then sure you could spec back to Prismatic Cloak, but with Algalon its likely other issues that are going on that are the problem and not your individual survivability (unless your gear is shit or something).
Making me a better mage with every upload! Thanks mate. Excited to see the Ulduar BiS / Gearing guide too. The Naxx one was really helpful for me making my That's My BiS List for the guild loot council

Grats on partner! And for making these vids. Unfortunately this just confirms my suspicions of having to swap back and forth all the time, hopefully fires good enough to close the dps gap p3
Great vid Crat. Only thing that will be difficult to do is optimizing gear for duel spec. It ends up looking like Arcane is the way to go, but I am still thinking that FFB or TTW Fire is going to be more ideal just because of specific encounters that those specs are ideal in. Yogg being a huge one especially for that 0 kill. No question early on pushing with Arcane, but I definitely will favor Fire for farm unless I can definitely do good gear swaps with Arcane. Those aiming to run Arcane as there primary spec should build there second spec around FFB since there is less hassle in gear swaps just for how similar they are.
@@sergeevichryan5577 Depends if we are talking about TTW or FFB. TTW is a big difference because you end up with a lot of wasted stats via hit pieces. So you need items that can swap into those for Arcane to become more optimal. In total, there are 5 slots that have different BiS between those. FFB, though, only has 3 pieces that are different for BiS and you generally can run the Arcane Set with FFB without too massive of a difference. Just certain pieces FFB favors with Spirit/Crit while Arcane favors Haste.

With different variations being optimal on different bosses, what would you recommend as a more one-size-fits-all progression dual-spec setup for someone who doesn't want to/can't go respec between bosses for a full run?
Depends if u can play arcane or not, if u can position good and also pump arcane is the way to go, most guilds will have 1 arcane mage in whole raid so that 3% dmg also matters
Great guide, Crateria! Thanks a lot for the insight and time. I'm a little confused as to what to settle for going into the first ID as there are a lot more talent builds than there are specs we can have. With some fights being suggested to take prismatic cloak, others IA. Then on the fire spec end - you suggest FFB and other fights TTW. If I'm having mana issues with TTW in Naxx when not critting enough, should I rather go FFB until I get better gear?
this might be an incredibly troll question at this point. But why not opt for the 2 points into the arcane tree into 3/3 spirit (not for progression) and drop DB/flamestarter/2 points in reach for 6% spirit increase I feel like this is a way bigger throughput to ST but maybe im under valuing the range increase.
you can def do that for certain fights where you don't need the range, but for fights like firefighter I think the range is def worth it you can also sim the value of each point of spirit of the mind if you want to see the dps increase, it's ok but each cast that range gives you is a lot of dps as well. Also remember that the subsequent points in spirit of the mind are worth less spirit than the first point (4% vs 3%)
