How to Take Notes Productively (Notion Template Included)

📝 The less friction you experience, the more effective the note-taking system - Productivity Nerd Jeff Su
One of the biggest issues with our default note-taking method is that it's very hard to "re-surface" relevant notes when the situation actually calls for it (we've all forgotten about notes we've taken in the past), so in this video I share How to Take Notes Productively and even include a Notion Template I've been using for the past few months that solves this problem!
Effective note-taking systems pass the "Before," "During," and "After" tests:
1️⃣ Before - How easy is it to start taking the note?
2️⃣ During - How quickly can we get our thoughts down on paper?
3️⃣ After - Are we able to resurface relevant notes when we need them?
While I personally don't think the application itself matters all that much, I've found Notion to have the features that check all 3 of these boxes. Whether you're a student or working professional, this Notion note-taking video (more of a tutorial if I'm being honest) may give you some inspiration on how you can optimize your current note-taking process ✌🏻

I have a very minor suggestion. As a newbie to Notion, I felt that too much was happening too quickly when you actually got into Notion usage. I am not sure if it was because you wanted to keep the video short, or perhaps you assumed that most people were already familiar with the platform etc. In my humble opinion, the video would have been much easier to follow through if you perhaps changed the pace and format of your presentation (for some technical topics such as this).
Except that, I loved the video, the edit and the overall quality. Hope you consider this feedback positively! :)

This is so satisfying to watch and exactly what I needed! I've been taking notes on my Notes app but it's so difficult to keep things organized especially since I tend to take screenshots of topics that I've been reading or reading self help books that I'm trying to apply to my life. I have tried to use Notion for work and I failed miserably as I have a lot of my notes taken by my apple pencil.

Keyboard clicks -> Clean Shot X! I hesitated using it at first since you have to pay 29 USD for it but MAN am I glad I did! It sped up my workflow like crazy!
Pop up -> That's just a plugin I bought for FCPX

One addition I made was making a property for the source of the information in the note. That gives me a way to filter by source in case I remember who said something but not what they said! 😅

Thanks for a video that is nudging me to change the way this old dog takes notes. Maybe I can learn a few new tricks. The video and templates you offer are super helpful but for me it is like trying to drink water from a fire hydrant. Hi James! Believe me when I tell you I've been there. Trust me. I actually "gave up" on Notion for 2 weeks because I was so frustrated with all the features, and I didn't even know how to move the blocks to the right hand side. But from watching more videos I realized the potential of the app was too great so I forced myself to come back and use it...and here I am!

Why not Google keep for simplicity? You have options to label and archive.
You also have options to collaborate.
This is a very interesting question. For personal use, I rarely need to collaborate. And unfortunately Google Keep can't do the "multi-layering" feature I need, like what the different "notebooks" offer me

Also, Why do you use the Magic Mouse 2, when you also have the MX Master 3? The gestures are pretty easily recoverable with keyboard shortcuts. Control and arrow, switches between Desktops, and much more?
So this is a VERY minor thing, but the Magic Mouse 2 is like smoother by 1-2% 😂I found

can you set dated reminders for a note in notion? i would like to link the notes to a calendar.
Yes you can choose the specific date to be reminded!
I actually have one single inbox (filtered list from my main database), where I vomit every single idea, event, todo etc. And once I do sorting, apply eg. a label "uni" for an idea of a paragraph to my thesis and it'll pop up filters I my page for uno and I can drag&drop it to my uni-database.
But thanks for the video! Been drowning in so much stuff recently, I've pretty much omitted my fairly fresh Notion setup even though it's amazingly useful and I've made it super frictionless to use to the point I actually have a shortcut on my phone to my filtered inbox view, so really 0 friction in getting my thoughts down. Should just remember to get back to it.
(Replying to both of your comments) Oh wow that's intense! But if that works for you, that's great! Oh man if you have a fairly fresh Notion setup you should get back to it 😉, I myself love using a "new" setup I have even when it's related to software! haha
Great video. I am using Evernote very similarly. I have found it easier to resurface notes in Evernote when compared to Notion.
Oh that's interesting! I've never really used Evernote myself. How do they resurface the notes?
@@JeffSu You have a couple of options. You can save specific filters to bring up specific sets of notes. You can use search to find notes using tags, notebooks, titles, dates. You can also create mini wikis by linking notes together. Evernote is more like a digital filing cabinet. Great for research and quick notes. Little friction and setup. Plug and play or plug and write.

Jeff, love your channel. Question for you, how do you use Notion and Google Keep together? I saw a video of yours for Google Keep as a note taking system and now this one for Notion. Did you remove Keep for your workflow?

@@JeffSu Thanks Jeff! That makes sense. I've been working on my own system and had been using Drafts as my capture tool of choice since it can practically export anywhere. Only down side is it can't export to Notion. Based on your videos I might do away with that completely and only use it for voice notes on my Apple Watch and just go Todoist to Notion. I have truly embraced the GTD system, is a life changing experience. Keep up the great content and being authentic!

This was a great video but following how you got to each page as related to your 'index' that housed your 'backend' and 'frontend' notes was a bit difficult. I never understood what you meant by 'database vs doc'?
Database = Table. Document = Page

I’ve also transferred my notes to Notion since early this year, and I started to think about how to unbox the logic within Notion’s complex relationship of blocks and pages when I’m trying to sell the idea to others.
Maybe attaching a simple logic flowchart that pops up somewhere when illustrating the Notion Setup somewhere after 03:01 will be much easier to help subscribers "resurface" it right after the 1st watch? 😃😃😃
Hi Lincoln, thanks so much for your feedback! To be honest I thought about having a "flowchart" that illustrates the resurface workflow but I couldn't figure out a way to do it with my limited video editing capabilities 😂. I think next time I'll try to draw it out using a sharpie and using that in my B Roll, but I'm worried it'll also take away from the production quality. In the end though I hope the useful content outweighs the "ugliness" of the B roll... 😅
@@JeffSu Hi Jeff, thanks for the quick turnaround, I’m a video editing rookie but truly impressed by your evolutions on the creative scene changes and visual effects from your early video till the latest one.
Still quite a draft idea, but perhaps you can firstly start on the Note-taking intro, meanwhile pinning a "logic tree" on top of the scene, and "highlight" the part you are narrating.
Then move the "highlight" to "UA-cam" page or "Content strategy" page, the upper logic of your video, so subscribers can be mentally easy to follow your guide and have a quick visual check when re-surface.
Again, hoping to see more of your output on productivity videos!

Likewise I want to create another Notebook to work upon. But it doesn't opens up with the whole database set up instead just a text. Am I missing something?

Hey Jeff, how do you decide when a new note is archived vs resurfaced? It seems like any time I have a new note on a good UA-cam video, it would forever just be resurfaced so that I can have it available all the time
Re-surface = I know I will need to reference this at some point down the line. Archived = it's basically outdated, there's no way I would come back to this
