Your method for recording acoustic guitar with the mic Angie’s towards the neck is the best micing technique I’ve ever tried. I’m re-recording all my acoustic tracks now using this method. Thanks for your awesome channel.

This is what you have to do when you're recording: be meticulous about everything that could screw up your recording. Don't pay much attention about the rest. A total newbie would lost hours with errors like this. Way to go Graham!
Something I do that helps, is to remember to leave room for a "count down" or count in, at the start of the song. A count "in" really helps for coming in on that first note or beat. 1, 2, 3, 4 can be done in any fashion as long as it lands me on that first note and beat. When I first started doing it, the process seemed clumsy and a bit wobbly but the more I did it, the more I got at ease with the counting and thus the coming in on time. You can always mute the Count later or substitute Drum Stick clicks for the numbers.
I''m going to build my own personal music studio, I am a new to this, so I have no idea of what I'm doing and I am so glad that I found your videos series as I think they will help me get started in something I have dreamed of doing my whole life! So thanks for these excellent videos I think they will come in handy in getting my life's dream going in the right direction.
I’m using Bias FX by Positive Grid for my virtual amp going into Reaper for my DAW. One thing I like doing in Bias FX is splitting my signal between two amps at the same time (this is an awesome feature) and panning to each side and recording those on separate tracks. I’ll do the with a total of four different amp types, but it only takes two takes (not counting do-overs) to have four different guitar sounds to play with. This has cut my workflow down a TON!!!
Nice looking tele. Sounds great. What a wonderful age we live in. One of my first jobs was working in a music studio in Nashville. Massive analog equipment that filled huge rooms and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in 1990s money. When I wanted to record at home, I had to satisfy myself with a Tascam 4 track tape deck that was still several hundred dollars. Flash forward 25 years and for the cost of that single 4 track tape recorder, you could have a ton of exponentially better sounding recording equipment. What a time to be alive.
Now getting clear concept, Recording Music and Vocals. Never felt I could record my own music, thought only an engineer could. I wrongly second and third guessed myself, not capable to record my music. I always understood arranging all my songs and does it joyfully easy. The Music Recording Tutors here WOW: You pushed me on I got confidence at last. 24/7 my whole Atmosphere Home and everything exciting and hopeful, Positively Successful. People wonder what going on with me. I don't explain. Educating in Recorded Music Production was easy for me to understand. I'm fully prepared to perfect in these courses. Million Thanks and blessing to all of you.
GREAT VIDEO AND TIPS!! I've been recording since the mid 80's, and I always learn a few great tips from your videos. You definitely have a immense understanding of the new way of computer recording. Much of the modern equipment and software is so easy for the younger generation to grasp and relay to us "OLD FARTS"!! keep up the good work my friend!!
Thanks man this has opened up a whole new world for me to recording seriously I learned on a 4 track so much easier than ping ponging everything on earth
Hey Graham, we met at Hybrid and NAMM recently. Just want to mention an acoustic recording tip for those self producing singer/songwriters. I have got some great tone recording direct through a Zoom A3 (it does acoustic modeling, with FX and mic modeling). The biggest benefit is for live playing but if you do that it's also great for recording and getting a huge variety of acoustic tones. (I realize this series is about recording on a budget, this is just an extra thought.)
Graham loves his Behringer B1. He always looks so proud of that mic. My first XLR mic was the Behringer C2 Matched Pair and it was definitely worth the $60. I put it up against AKG C214's as overheads and the C2's get almost as good as a recording. I also like them better than the C214's for acoustic guitar. Just thought I'd post about those mics on here. Try them out, if you're looking for a nice, inexpensive matched pair of mics.
Wow great series. Thanks man. Can't believe how different digital is from analogue in terms of the order of laying down the tracks. Looking forward to the finished song.
Excellent video! Concise; well explained; not too long; not too short. Will read your Radio Ready Guide. Problem is, the kind of Alternative Rock that I am interested in is very radio, flat TV and (God forbid) computer speaker unfriendly and require headphones of Sennheiser Momentum quality. Even Audio Technica Ath-M50X headphones can sound muffled when listening to the music of some Alt Rock bands.
For recording, the level after the ampsim shouldn't matter as it is the dry signal that is being recorded by your daw. This means you can change those settings post recording.
I love these series of videos you are making Graham! I love the step-by-step approach! You're truely sharing great content :) I might not be your usual target audience but I just love watching your videos, they have helped me a lot not just in recording, but also in getting me to find the proper mindset to go foward and stop looking back at my old stuff, and overall develop as an artist! I'm currently building a fanbase on Twitch, with a lot of great people and an awesome community, and I must say that a part of the success comes from your tips and advices. Thanks to you xxx
Graham, you’re so much more comfortable on guitar than bass. Less frowning (hard concentration) and more smiling (relaxed). Always a joy to hear good music being put and come together. The tip for doubling up the electric guitars is genius for me (even though it may be a standard thing to do). I’ll experiment doing this with my instrument (Caribbean Steel Drum) with various settings. Love the idea for panning alone. I was wondering how I could create more depth and interest. This is certainly one way that would help. Giving Thanks 🔥🙌🏾😎💫 Blessup
WRITE A BETTER ONE!! HA HA. it's a great riff for sure..... don't watch this video then go back to a similar sing you are writing lol That REALLY mess ees s with you!!

Another excellent tutorial Graham...you are really on the right track helping many that need this tutorial to get going on recording. Cheers. Ps. I see you have a 300,000 fan base to, congratulations.
Awesome video, song sounds freakin awesome, I'm recording for our church and amps are a BIG problem for me, they give me so many problems with the hum and distortion , what is a good amp plug in that is a reasonable price,
So how do you record with latency? Graham, I have the same soundcard and a beast of a computer but still getting tons of latency. If I try setting up Pro Tools to 64 or 32 samples, then the audio is completely glitchy - even in a blank project with no plugins on! I'm sure I'm not the only one struggling with this. Would appreciate some tips and tell us your settings please!
i7 4790k 32GB of DDR3 Ram Running Pro Tools and files from a Samsung 850 Evo SSD Like I said, it's a beast.. Should be more than sufficient to run PT without latency but i just can't figure it out.
Really appreciate these - you speak very clearly and are a great teacher! How would you record a Yamaha Grand Piano (mic placement, etc)? Would you prefer to record the real piano or use a midi and have a grand piano software sound? Thanks!
Good day. I just wanna ask if would it be okay to have a condense microphone for vocals and an shure sm58 microphone for acoustic guitar? Would that be good for a live sessions or for video recording?? More power bro. Learning from Philippines..
Great Guide! Well pleased because your using the interface I also use. what kind of settings do you have for the interface when recording and what's your latency?
Hey Graham! One quick question.. I own a POD HD500 and it says it can be used as an audio interface. I have been using this to try to record my songs and, honestly, it's worked just fine. BUT Do you think I should get a different audio interface? I mean, one built only for that purpose? Thank you! (greetings from Brazil!)
I think it probably depends on what two tones you use, but it might not change all that much. It's best to just record it twice for the subtle differences.
I just started making (well, attempting to make) music, and I really was wondering, how high or low the gain should be when recording vocals, electric, and acoustic guitar respectively? And how should it sound?
maybe this is a stupid question, but do I have to turn up any of my knobs ON my guitar (not the interface) to record, or do I keep it as low as possible? I'm facing a problem where by my interface just needs very little gain up and it's already 50-75% of the track level, the gain ring doesnt even light up. is it a must to make it so that the green ring on the interface lights up everytime i strum it? sorry for poor english.
Hi Graham. Loving your videos! I learn almost everything I need from your channel alone. Just have a question about how you managed to get the Focusrite plugin to work in Protools first. I've got the Scarlette 2i2 studio and can't get any 3rd party plug ins to work even in the right format. Thanx!!
Bevan Soga I have a first gen 2i2 studio and afaik it comes with the same plugins which are vst2/3's which iirc aren't compatible with ProTools First as it only supports the aax format.
Can I just put out that panning guitars 100% left and right is a bad idea. Fluff from Riffs, Beards and Gear mentions that when listening to songs in a car you lose definition of the other guitar, but I find that hard panning just takes away from a coherent sound when listening through headphones. Panning 90% left and right gives you the same wide effect, but solves these issues.
Hey! Could you please tell me how to get rid of the noise on the higher gain guitar tracks? I tried noise gates but they tend to cut long notes when they're dying out.
Hey Graham, nice video here... I have a hollow body electric guitar which does have a good acoustic tone, so I recorded it for an acoustic part of the song, with the B1as you do, but there's too much noise from the pick I'm using, any advice on avoiding it?
Daniel Ramirez You could try another pick or strings, try to work on alignment of the pick during playing. But try to work with the mic and mic-placment. I like the sound of a small condenser pointing to the body under the bridge but it trends to pick up the pick hitting the strings. Sometimes the mic can suppress the pick noise if you placeret the mic like Graham in this video and move it further up the neck of the guitar away from the sound hole. The large condenser used has a lot of brigtness and the pick attack is also very high in freqency so also try out a dynamic if you have one. Play with the mic and listen closely to what you get, you can find some sweet spots where you can suppress the picking sound :-)
Just recorded without a pick, just my fingernails, and it sounded good, Thanks so much Martin I'll give it a try on what you say and I'll update the post.
To anyone. Does having an interface remove the hum on a guitar when recording? I plug in straight into my PC and I know it may be the guitar or cables but generally speaking, would it make a difference on the humming? Thanks.
Thank you so much for that very useful video, but for my ears your guitars out of tune. It's very important thing because even such a detail can spoil all mix. Cheers!
I have a question. My DI signal is really really weak, and i have my gain knob on my 2i4 set to about 2 o'clock and its about 15 % "headroom" when i watch the fader in Studio One, so if i crank it more im close to clipping. Does anyone know how to help me?
Hey Graham, REALLY appreciate the great work you do! My audio interface is a Focusrite 2i4, and I'm often unsure whether to choose the Line or Instrument setting - especially when using a condenser mic. It looks like you remained in Instrument when using your B1 for the acoustic guitar. Could you please clarify the differences and how to know which to select? Thanks!
The instrument setting is the correct one, other than that I'm not sure about the technical differences with line level and what it would do to your sound but when recording the mic into the 2i4 with phantom power your mic signal will be brought up to instrument level so that's the one to use.
Hi guys! Using the "Instrument" settings is for microphones or instruments that need to utilize the preamp of the interface! The "Line" selection should bypass the preamp of the interface. Sometimes, if I'm recording bass or a direct guitar into the interface, with an external preamp like a SansAmp or Pod, I'll use the "Line" setting so that I don't run my tone through another preamp.
^^And there's one of those 'differences' I was talking about, thanks Johnathan :) I'm fairly new to this as well and although I've researched meticulously there are always little details and tiny changes that can be made so that everything sounds clean and correct.
Hi Graham (or anybody else who cares to chip in), I'm trying to record acoustic finger-picked all through a song with an electric strummed all through as well......it's hard trying to get them to sound nice together, any ideas? Thanks!!
Can you please make a video about having good harmonies..i cant seem to have a good harmony i.e. Boyz ii men.. also doubling for me seems flanged and robotic
Start messing around on a piano or humming while your vocals are playing and try to come up with something! Think of harmony as a group: lows, mids and highs and keep them 3 separate voices with their place that doesn't cross each other
I love this guy. He's just doing it without all the elitist bs.

I like how every time he plugs something into the second input for the video, he switches it to line just to show that he's setting it to instrument.

might be assio fault,,reinstal drivers ,,im runing 64 sample on 1,6ghz amd laptop apu on steinberg ur22 mk2
also try another interface if you can,,borow it from somebody,,i had presonus shitbox and i could barely get 512 working min,,and it was laggy as fck
Really appreciate these - you speak very clearly and are a great teacher! How would you record a Yamaha Grand Piano (mic placement, etc)? Would you prefer to record the real piano or use a midi and have a grand piano software sound?

cool song cool tele ! Im old and Im going to spring for the interface solo and try it ?
Good day. I just wanna ask if would it be okay to have a condense microphone for vocals and an shure sm58 microphone for acoustic guitar?
Would that be good for a live sessions or for video recording??
More power bro.
Learning from Philippines..
You should really do an updated video on how to record a drum kit with just one microphone. I don't want to use drum loops or ez drummer.
Sure love your videos. A quote from Mr. Rogers, "Won't you be..... my neighbor ?" lol
yet another great video sir!
Really liking this
Another very useful video !
Can you explain how you use markers to mark verse, chorus, bridge, etc? Thanks
I'd watch his video if he was explaining the Yellow Pages. These videos are awesome.
BUT
Do you think I should get a different audio interface? I mean, one built only for that purpose?
Thank you! (greetings from Brazil!)
Could you just duplicate one guitar track, change insert amp tone, then pan the two? Or is the subtle track differences the goal?
I think it probably depends on what two tones you use, but it might not change all that much. It's best to just record it twice for the subtle differences.
great!
more acoustic Graham!)
Hi Graham! Are you using a laptop or desktop? If laptop what specs do you suggest for home recording with drums. Thanks!
This series is perfect for someone like me. Thank you :)
Perfect! Thank you!
What do I download to get the eleven lite amp? I bought the Scarlett 2i2 but the amp simulator is nowhere to be found.

Would like to see that as I haven't used mine for recording yet 🤔
this is a good song.
Hello! What is your guitar? Thanks!
What are other virtual amps you can use for pro tools first? You can’t get any third party amps with it, and I don’t have that interface.
I am " just1morgan" !! -:) and a bonjour from France
I have this same scarlett solo and I don't have this amp simulator, how do I get it?
It's free in pro tools
garageband also has some great amp simulators if you have a Mac
@@skitelsstudio8787 I'm getting a new PC just for music and recording. What do you recommend? Still Apple?
Hey Graham, nice video here... I have a hollow body electric guitar which does have a good acoustic tone, so I recorded it for an acoustic part of the song, with the B1as you do, but there's too much noise from the pick I'm using, any advice on avoiding it?

Just recorded without a pick, just my fingernails, and it sounded good, Thanks so much Martin I'll give it a try on what you say and I'll update the post.
Is the microphone placement for condenser and dynamic mic the same?
sadly, the link for the PDF doesn't seem to be working.
Graham, should we not be recording around the -18db that you say should be the right level?
As long as you don't clip it, you're fine and can always move the volume around after recording. Better safe than sorry
when using a usb mic should i change the input levels to get the 50-75% recommended signal?
excellent - thanks
To anyone.
Does having an interface remove the hum on a guitar when recording?
I plug in straight into my PC and I know it may be the guitar or cables but generally speaking, would it make a difference on the humming?
Thanks.
Great video!
how do you get eleven lite
It came free with the Focusrite audio interface he is using
where im from we pay around 250 U$ for that microphone. a sm Beta 58 A goes for around 500 U$ now.
we pay more than 200% mark up for any piece of equipment here.
Its in africa.
Thank you so much for that very useful video, but for my ears your guitars out of tune. It's very important thing because even such a detail can spoil all mix. Cheers!

Thanks for all the good information, it helps a lot.
Hi Graham (or anybody else who cares to chip in), I'm trying to record acoustic finger-picked all through a song with an electric strummed all through as well......it's hard trying to get them to sound nice together, any ideas? Thanks!!
Why is it that much different to double the guitar and pan it left and right?
Can you please make a video about having good harmonies..i cant seem to have a good harmony i.e. Boyz ii men.. also doubling for me seems flanged and robotic
Start messing around on a piano or humming while your vocals are playing and try to come up with something! Think of harmony as a group: lows, mids and highs and keep them 3 separate voices with their place that doesn't cross each other
