So what does Hoobastank even mean? Well I honestly have no idea. *
That’s because for al ot of interviews the band gave early in their career they told interviewers different answers as to where the name came from. One was that it was a name for someone from california who has a shoe fetish, another was that it was a street name in Germany, while another answer was that it was the middle name of their bass player. My favorite answer was that it was the H in Jesus H Christ. In reality it seemed like the band just came up with the name thinking no one else would have the name.
The group would spend a few months recording their major label debut that was self titled. Estrin would be the principal songwriter first coming up with song ideas telling the buffalo news “i’ll break out all my recording equipment. - my guitars, bass guitars and drum machines and play a riff over and over again. Eventually I’ll create the whole song, record it and i’ll take the tape to rehearsal and show it to the other guys.Doug Robb will take it and try to develop a vocal melody over what im playing and develop lyrics. ” The band would work with Incubus producer Jim Wirt who they credited with having hone their sound and he would also help the band write some songs.
Hoobastank would release their self titled major label debut in November of 2001. The lead single Crawling in the Dark would be their breakthrough hit. The introspective single Crawling was the catalyst that helped kickstart sales of their major label debut record after LA Station KROQ started playing the song. reaching No. 3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 7 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart while also having crossover success peaking at number 68 on the hot 100. .
But Crawling in the Dark wasn’t their most successful song from the album. Their second single Running Away would be the biggest song off the record peaking at number two on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and was a crossover hit peaking at number 44 on the hot 100 chart. The third single Remember Me would peak at number 28 on the mainstream rock tracks chart. The success of the singles helped propel their major label debut album to go platinum. THe press made it seem like the band were an overnight success and riding the coattails of Incubus, Robb would joke that the album was selling so well because it was cheap but would later add that he received a lot of emails from fans who stated “the songs have really reached them in a deeper way than just musically and they can relate to ta lot of the lyrics. “ with the band being credited as being more introspective than it’s peers.
The New York Daily News would publish a story on the band in 2001 “Landing a major label deal is a lot like selling real estate. Both sometimes operate on the same mantra “location, location, location.” Since the members of Hoobastank went to the same high school as members of linkin park and incubus, record labels soon started circling the area like sharks. It wasn’t just Hoobastank who benefited from their association with Incubus and Linkin Park as other local bands including Hot Wire and Vent also got major label deals. Vent would feature Incubus frontman brandon boyd’s younger brother. However, Incubus would probably have the biggest influence on Hoobastank with their frontmen kind of looking similar, Incubus taking Hoobastank out on several tours and with the groups sharing a producer in Jim I
rwin. The New York Daily News profile would use the headline “Hoobastank, At Least The Name is Original,” ouch. But the band chalked up the similarity to hoobastank because they both shared the same influence Mr. Bungle. their guitarist Estrin at one point was even a roadie for Incubus
First Major Label Studio Album - crawling in the dark, running away.
While Hoobastank would frequently be labeled as nu-metal in the press, would call their music between the extremes of metal and pop with Robb telling the kansas city star “i don’t want to be like one of those bands that can go only go out with certain musical styles or for that matter be only able to write one certain style because there’s a lot heavier stuff in us to write and there’s a lot of mellower stuff to wri
Hoobastank or Incubus?
I like both but kinda prefer hoobastank more as I know lore tracks.
Not by alot but reminds me I need to delve into Incubus more.
I don't think they're a incubus rip off either.
@@jonw3462
Their Crawling in the Dark Demo (I think thats what it was called) was included free with many of the purchases of Morning View thats how I discovered Hoobastank
@@jonw3462 What are lore tracks?
I love Incubus' S.C.I.E.N.C.E more than anything Hoobastank has done.
Hooverstink don’t have anything as memorable as Drive or the Warmth. So Incubus easily.
That Moutain Dew opening 🤣🤣🤣
Young Channing Tatum before he blew up
I don’t know what happened to them, but I’ve been crawling in the dark, looking for the answers….I’ll show myself out now…
That was really bad
Geeze dude
So that's The Reason for you to be here? Why are you Running Away? This is Gonna Hurt
I remember my friend Corey and I walking down old town Pasadena on a Friday night in 2001 and hearing an acoustic set playing from a cafe. The song ended and the singer said we are Hoobastank. She busted out laughing and said they’re not getting nowhere with that name. A few months later we saw them feature on MTV. We still weren’t into them.
Thanks for putting these episodes together!!!
Were they playing Equators? Used to play there with my band around that time 😅
Yes it is!
That’s cool you played there, it’s a nice looking place!
I had to google map my steps.
At the time i didn’t catch the name of the location.
All I remember was. My friend and I left Qs and started walking west on the leftside Colored Blvd. The
the cafe wasn’t exactly on Colorado Boulevard. If you walk down an alley the cafe was there.
Hoobastank did sound good acoustically but when I heard them on MTV , I didn’t like what they sounded.
I'm about to put $7 worth of Hoobastank in the jukebox.
I came to the comments to say the same thing 🤣
Awesome reference. 😁
Hoobastank means Uber Stank or really good weed. The original bass player was foreign/Scandinavian with an accent and he once told them "I have some Uber Stank." and they were like "What is Hoobastank?".
That made me like their name at least
I still continually listen to my Incubus albums, especially make yourself, science, and morning view. Heard “science” in high school and became an instant fan, thank you Scott S for sharing cds in school.
Hoobastank and Incubus are super cool, I remember listening to them when I was in school, it was a shame that they dropped the saxophone, because I was a saxophone player in school.
They were always jokingly referred to as Incubus lite... then The Reason blew up and they just stank
You get compared to incubus you’re doing something right
@@michaelwills1926 Not when everyone is saying, "You're trying to be like Incubus... and you're failing."
Unironically still love this band. Most of their non-popular tracks are actually better than the singles. "Did You" still goes hard
Hey Nick didn't think I'd see you here! Just got done watching your Twisted Metal season 2 video
@@nvstronaut
Hoobastank...at least we're not LostProphets!
Well, not many molest babies.
100% though
Yeah, but the bar shouldn't be in hell. If you have to compare yourself/someone with the worst to look not so bad, you've already lost.
I had the pleasure of seeing Hoobastank and Incubus back to back at a show once. They are very similar, but they come out of the same scene and have the same influences. That show was one of the most awesome nights of my life. They both kicked ass, large amounts of substances were ingested, and we even had a 20 person hackeysack game, lol. It was awesome.
A rare case where the critics were correct
Ouch. I didn't expect as much hate as these guys are getting in the comments. Running Away and Crawling in the Dark were great songs. Didn't like The Reason at all. But all hate? Come on.
I agree. I even the the reason. Idk why that song gets the hate, it was catchy AF.
'Without a fight' is my jam. Where's my EBA gang at?
That’s what I’m sayin lol weird❤
Personally I love Hoobastank and they’re in my top 5 favorite bands!
My brother was in rehab in Georgia and my grandmother wanted to visit him from Tennessee so I drove her down. While driving her car I noticed she had the hoobastank album that just came out. I was shocked.. turned out she bought it just for “the reason” she hated the rest. We ended up listening to that damn song 30 times on the way to visit my brother. She dedicated it to him in her own little world. She loved me but REALLY loved my brother. My brother turned out fine and my grandmother is gone but it was a nice memory spending that time with her
Someone brought up that mike shinoda went to a different high school, but Buffalo news feature on hoobastank mentions him going to the same school here buffalonews.com/article_972bedc0-88f1-5617-86bf-ea99d8eb1be6.html
Thank you for the post! ✌🏼😊
Kooterstank
Bootystank
😂😂
My friend called them Hoochie Skank😂
naming the band hoobastank was biggest fumble, still a fan
Exactly. Right up there with Goo Goo Dolls.
Well at least they didn't name it "I wrestled a bear once" yes that is a real band name...
@@allencarey7336 Was. They broke up. Also, they played nutty metal so it kinda fit.
why do names have to be so serious lol its the best name ever
Smart plan. It makes people still think of them
I don't care what people say bad about the Stank. Their first 2 records are fantastic in my opinion. Out of Control is still on my frequent listens.
doesnt mean theyre good 🤣

HoobaStank? " they Stank"😂
Chris hesse (drummer) is one helluva producer/engineer he did good friends of mine "get dead"'s most recent release they are killing it on that album. Highly recommend.
Get Dead rules.
@vednev6931 indeed. I have a cameo in this ones for johnny. I don't think it would have been possible to be more hung over 😆.
Funny seeing all the hate for this band on here.
I still listen to all of Hoobastank's Albums
Singles are good - sit down and listen to some of the non singles and you might be surprised!
Great video.
Thanks!
I've always called " The reason" the douche bag song/anthem.
Thank you! It is such a messed up non-apology song. "I messed up HARD in our relationship, but I'll be better for the next girl BECAUSE of You." Gives me the ick. 🤢

What Happened To Us is a pretty solid track
Only remember Zack Galifianakis goofing on them when he hosted SNL for the first time in Mar. 2010
Is that the piano monologue?
He also makes fun of them on TAEASGJ
I saw Hoobastank in Kuala Lumpur. At Hard Rock Cafe.
I get Hoobstank, Simple Plan, and New Found Glory mixed up. Yellowcard too.
There was no Reason.. Nuff said!
I loved them, still do
“Just One” is another great song by them. I’m surprised it wasn’t a big hit
I personally love their songs and The Reason is maybe 5th on that list
I always thought it was “Whobuttstank” hidden for tongue in cheek purposes
Never heard of them
Liked a few of their songs, but that name. I just couldn’t take that name seriously.
Haha what are the odds I refreshed my feed and you’re doing a video on Hoobastank, after i just commented about them on your P.O.D. video I just watched (that I think you posted 5 or 6 months ago)? I’m supposed to be starting prep for gig tomorrow, but I have a few minutes. Lol.
Whatever gets said in this video, I had a great experience working as background on their Remember Me video. K, time to watch…
I can't not giggle every time I hear someone genuinely and ser3iously say "Hoobastank."
I imagine that's what happened to them.
I didn’t mind the few singles but always thought of them as radio candy lol sweet for the airwaves and nothing more 😁
Crawling in the dark is a banger
They were an amazing ska band. Their first album they don’t make basketball shorts like they used to was GREAT!
It was disappointing to see them let the horn section go in order to adopt a more mainstream sound ESPECIALLY because one of the saxophone players was their biggest supporter and was always the one out promoting them at the shows before they were signed.
I was a huge fan and they had a huge following and I imagine those other fans have just as little respect for them as I do.
It astonishes me when a band "complains about the success" of a song, album, etc.
If their name had been used by a band for late 80s Seattle, it probably would have blown up(in a good way). I think they genre of music makes their name just seem goofy.
marku is one of the nicest & greatest guys i've ever met.
totally underrated band, some recent trivia: The Reason charted again in latinamerica but as a Salsa version (mostly in spanish), yes you read that right xD (and it's not bad either) venezuelan singer Jonathan Moly released it on 2022 and has Hoobastank as a featured artist on it, they even performed it together on latin music award shows
I listened to them because incubus was my fave band and they didn't have new music at the time. Morning view came out later that year so I was done with them before the reason took off
Hey! That's Jeff!
Their song on the Halo 2 soundtrack is still pretty damn good.
I still like the Reason. Do people hate it because its slow or consider it "mushy"? Seems like some people just need everything to always be turned up to 11 🤷
I bought a pair of B&W speakers off Chris Hesse at his house near Malibu (might have been Topanga) back in 2008. Hung out for a bit and talked speakers/music. The buddy I took with me knew his band and asked him what the name meant - Chris said it was a street in Germany they couldn't read and just made up the word of what they thought it looked like - not sure what the street name was but if you look at how the Germans spell street, it kinda makes sense: straße) He was a chill guy.
staged
The critics were right in this case.
Yeah they hoobastunk
As in many cases though
Ayyo
They Ultimately Sucked!
The song. Up And Gone. Is one I like.
😂 bro, I completely forgot about this band!
I still dig em’
This is what actually happened. The lead singer couldn't hit the notes live. There are several live videos of him sounding bad.
I don't know if it's been done before, I'm new to the channel, but it would be interesting to do something with the theme... songs that were/are protests and became hits
Denny's doesn't have "The Hooburrito" on their menu anymore, but if you ask the kitchen nicely they'll still make one for you.
For(N)ever had some great songs on it!
I actually saw them with Incubus and Phantom Planet. It wasn't a bad show once Phantom Planet was done.
Thats cool must of been around the same time I saw them in 2004 with phantom planet and lost prophets at Purdue university.
@@5starview I think it was around then
Phantom Planet > Hooba Stench
I didn't know critics hated them but i genuinely think they suck mainly just by vocals and not making sense at all. They may not be bad people but i just think its all over the place
John Cusack
That mountain dew commercial is god tier
Yup
Not a horrible band but pretty milk toast. Funny enough, when I saw you did a video about Hoobastank I thought I remembered a couple of their songs but quickly realized I was remembering Incubus songs :). Crawling in the Dark is a banger, however I hear no Mr Bungle influence in any of their music I have heard, despite what the band says. As awesome as Mr Bungle is, I dont think any band can be featured in a Mt Dew commercial with Mr Bungle's sound permeating through their music. I feel like a lot of bands say Mr Bungle is an influence to try to gain some credibility.
They may have a bad name, but that won’t stop me from enjoying them.
I always assumed their name was bongwater related.
Surprised you didn't mention that 2004 MTV awards show botch.. I remember that very well.
Man I was obsessed with Hoobastank when I was a teen. I don't think they sound anything like incubus.

Cerious to hear a story on seven marry three or days of the new
I love radio rock/metal bands. I may not buy their albums. But I'll jam to their popular songs and attend the shows.
I thought of them as Incubus Junior, but without the level of talent that Incubus had, which is even more of a dis since I thought of Incubus as Mr Bungle wannabees in the beginning. Then Incubus grew up and these guys got left even further behind.
I just got a Tour Notification today for them to play in Edmonton, Alberta : )

he looks like mike shinoda - 2:08
I heard it was a fraternity term for "Who's Butt Stinks".
Hoobastank means Whose Butt Stank.

Hoobastank was one of those rare cases where the critics were 100% RIGHT! They SUCKED!
Same direction & Running away are still sneedzy bangers! 🤘
Everyone called them an incubus rip off back when they came out
Never saw the Incubus similarity
Lmfao these guy's hoobastunk then and they hoobastink now 😂😂

I think this band along with incubus came around at a time when rock no longer had any identity. There weren’t any new youth movements sprouting up and it was kind of like rehashing older trends and pissing in the wind to see what sticks. They weren’t the worst bad ever, but it wasn’t the clash right? The Mountain Dew commercial was fitting, because It felt more like a product than a band
Love Hoobastank! Definitely one of my favorite bands! Glad they made a comeback and are doing live shows again!
Recommend listening to some of their songs like Pieces, Out of Control, Crawling in the Dark, Escape, etc.
