My notes: 1. A substrate medium of fine sand, fine pine mulch and pearlite - free draining 2. Liquid hormone called Dip’n’Grow 3. Warm, humid environment. Out of direct sunlight. 4. Root around July (January for Southern Hemisphere). 5. Cuttings at 15:40 6. Don’t push it too deep into the substrate. Only about 12mm. 7. A successful cutting will begin to have the first roots after about 8 weeks.
This was amazing info, thank you very much, I have to try and work out the flipped months/seasons as I am here in Australia. But its a great start. I want to root cuttings from my late Grandmothers Camellia, beautiful red flowers, but have zero idea what it is. Interesting story, when I was 8 I got it off a random person selling at a car boot sale and have it as a gift to my grandmother. For which she always loved it, grew pretty massive. When she passed 5 years ago, dad had to sell the house, so we pruned it hard, dug it up and moved it to this house, amazing it thrived in its new home just like its old one (think my Grandmother had something to do with that haha). But when it flowers a year later looked amazing, and then after that, it flowered again, but with different flowers, at the time I worked at a big box store here in Melbourne, and our horticulturist identified the flower as a Lilac. So its seems it wasn't 1 tree but 2, a Camellia and Lilac intertwined. Luckily both have the same soil, light, water requirements. While I will propagate the Camellia, not sure if I should do another bonded planting.
Thank you for sharing your expertise ..trying to root a camellia from my daughter in laws grandfathers special garden…hope it works as beautifully for me as it does for you…stay blessed..
I tried to root camelias and i was told to put the cuttings in dry soil then just spray them every day. They all died. I tried again this time i put them in damp soil and mist them every day cause i was told to not let the cuttings dry out. Now the soil is drying out and they look like they are dying again and the leaves are falling off and they look dead. I do have them on my back verandah In a mini plastic green house that is shaded except for some filtered sun in the morning on just one end of the green house with a zippered front door. I just wanted to ask, am i supposed to keep the green houses zippered door closed all the time even on really hot days? Is this why they are drying out cause the air and breeze is doing it? Should I water them when they are dry and how dry can they get before I need to water them. What am i doing wrong? These cuttings came from my parents plant that they left in the garden after they passed and it means so much to me to get these cuttings to root. Please help :(
I live in Riverviw just South of Tampa and I am trying to grow camellia sinensis. The planted in full sun with a common garden soil. The plants are doing poorly so I wanted to know if they should be replanted in a shady area with a more acidic medium like pine fines with peat moss etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Howd it go with your camellia? I live in Temple Terrace and have a sinensis in a pot and some japonicas, i have all mine in part shade and they are doing ok
Hello Mr Phillips, can I propagate new growth from Camellias? The stems is still soft easy to bend and its lime green stems unlike the old growth where its has a brown skin. Thanks
I can not find pine bark mulch in my country. There is peat moss or peat moss based potting soil,( peat moss with fertilizers) and garden soil ,clay based, with PH~7. There is coconut coir, but with high PH. I have perlite and vermiculite, but if I put lot of perlite, I am loosing optimal PH. I can by rhododendron potting soil, but it is peat moss with fertilizers. I am repoting adult camellia, that is very sick. Can I mix peat moss 40%, perlite 15%, vermiculite 15%,10% garden soil and 20% potting soil that have ph 6,6. That mix is PH 5,72 and with 25% potting soil instead 20%, is PH 5,76.? Is that good or adult sick camellia? Camellia live in the pot, because I am in zone 7.
I'm listening to this on my cell phone and I have a Bluetooth speaker that I can use and that helps magnify the sound. And another thing that helps with these low-level sound videos is to watch it on your cell phone or your tablet and use earbuds or headphones and the sound is much better and clear and you can get it louder than just the regular volume hope that helps

Thank you so much for the lesson & great stories. We're still laughing at "...Daddy gets around..." LOL LOL
Is it good to propagate from cutting than to plant its seed if we need a similar looking plant like its mother plant.
Did anypne catch what was mentioned for the fertilizer, just before "liquid fertilizer"?
What a lovely guy❤
