They have pushed back the date to 2025 now. So just keep listening for when the ETIAS system actually goes into effect.
Thank you for the update!
I’m landing in Rome on 12/15/23, do I need this??
@@jasnp1 no
Thank you, just triple checking before I land 😂
Thank you for the update!
The Visa Waiver (it is not a Visa) begins in 2025. The cost as of now is around 8 euros. The link is not available yet as the date isn't for another year. The date has changed multiple times so it may change again.
Cheap compared to the $21 to apply for ESTA 😁
And they say it’s not a visa but I think it really is in a way sort of like the ones from people from Europe to get in for the Esta they say it’s not really a visa but in a way it is because you’re paying extra money and you already have your passport to get in the country which used to be your passport did not require anything additional.
I guess this thing is sort of tit for tat since the US did it to Europeans then the Europeans can get extra money from American travelers coming over.
Uh yeah 😆 I was gonna comment that ETIAS isn't a VISA it's a pre-clearance that will make your trip easier, and get you in their system so future visits don't come with that "Are you a threat to our security" possibility.
Unless you are 1. a drug kingpin 2. have overstayed in Europe in the past or 3. been convicted of drug-kingpin-ery or bashed someone's jello out their melon (YIKES then you shouldn't be out PERIOD lmao) it's not going to stop your visit.
And you have a year and one month to worry about it if you're really that big a risk (shouldn't even be trusted in the next TOWN maybe?)
It's more tape yes, but it's blue tape with a green light, if you show no red.. Begrijpen jullie? 😅
We don't need a "VISA" to cross the pond, WOLTER clickbaited your attention for a good cause, so you don't get paranoid
@@enjoyslearningandtravel7957 Well, all you do is fill out a form. If you want a vida, you have to go to an interview at the embassy and wait for them to check your information. Tgen you have to go back to the embassy to pick up the document. That could be expensive if you live in Californiacand all the European embassies are in DC
@@wncjan And ESTA is only valid for 2 years not 3 like ETIAS.
It feels like international travel is getting complicated. Thanks for helping make it clear!
We leave next week for Europe and my heart nearly stopped when I saw this video! I thought I messed up and didn't do something I needed to get done before we travel. Yikes! Great information and I definitely will be putting a reminder in calendar to get this done. 😀
Only for 2024 not if ur traveling on 2023
Thank you so much for keeping us informed. You're my go to for up to date travel information.
I know this isn’t that complicated but it does make travel a bit more complicated. It’s a pity that the United States made the so-called visa waiver requirement for the European travelers. A passport should be enough for most countries.
It’s annoying that people get so offended at border security. Countries have a right to protect their borders and as an American I would NEVER think to get offended at any other country for requiring me to get a visa, go through border security, answer questions, or whatever. I want it here and it is completely natural for any other country to protect itself too. I want to give the same respect to other countries when visiting that I want to be shown here.
Say that again
USA should impose a visa to Europe 🇪🇺 too!!!
@nerysghemor5781 WOW you don't get it don't you?
The REAL threat to EU security is in their own backyard
Thanks for this video. I haven’t been to Europe since the Pandemic and wasn’t aware of this requirement at all.
It's not until November 2023
Enjoyed your last few videos. My daughter lives in Freiburg, so it was interesting to see your take on it. Regarding the new Visa Waiver, I guess it's only fair that the Europeans have instituted a similar program to America's, although it is cheaper. Your viewers should beware of possible scamming sites, I know that there are a number of official-looking sites offering ESTA assistance that charge people more than they need to pay if they are on the official site.
Thank you for posting this. I think your videos are great!
Thanks for this! Travelling to France next year.
Thank you for the update
Glad to help
Great info, thanks Mark!
Thank you Wolter. I completely missed this new visa requirement for euro travel. Thanks for posting this very informative and helpful video! Thanks again from Boston (and great Boston Travel videos 👍).
It doesn't go into effect for another year so we are all good u til November 2023
@@woltersworld There isn't even an official website for it yet, so I bet a few fake sites are going to pop up until then, and a lot of people will be scammed (they will either overcharge people while acting as an unnecessary intermediary or flat out take their money and run). Hey Marc, awesome video and great tips.

To clarify this is NOT a visa. It's an electronic travel authorization ONLY for visa-free nationalities to the Schengen countries. A lot of media outlets have been mislabeling this as a visa but it is NOT a visa. It's a system like the ones in Australia, New Zealand, Canada (though US passports are exempt from it) and the US's own ESTA system and none are visas at all. The UK is going to implement something similar too in the next couple of years.
Well I don't understand how it's practically different to an evisa you'd need to go to a country like Turkey or Egypt
@@grassytramtracks No difference. Just fancier way. 😅
@@grassytramtracks It is a semantic difference. A Visa is an approved document allowing you to travel to the border of the country the visa has issued to present yourself and ask for entry (based on the visa class). It is a legal document - a visa is meant there is no other simpler way of someone to be allowed to visit that country. If the immigration official does not let you in despite having a visa you can appeal in nearly every country at least.
The travel authorization is somewhat different. On the underlying basis, those countries were visa exempt - so there was/is a legal basis to travel to the US, or to the Schengen Area having the "correct" citizenship's passport. The Authorization is a hurdle to be able to deny it on an ad hoc basis, without legal recourse. A denied ESTA or ETIAS is non negotiable and you have THEN go to the embassy or consulate to apply for a visitor visa.
Money grab
@grassytramtracks It’s different because with ETIAS (and ESTA and ETA etc) is that you pay once and it lasts for 2-5 years and decisions you usually take mere minutes or hours. The evisas to Egypt and Turkey are not like that and they cost more. And they’re different from regular visas because with regular visas you have to gather a lot of documents to apply and spend way more money and if you don’t have a job you might not be able to get the visa and sometimes you might need to go to an embassy and get questioned etc. And with Schengen in specific they might only give you a visa for just the duration of the trip and the dates that you put in the application. So ETIAS is 1% of the labor and cost that it is for a regular visa and that distinction is important. But westerners almost never have to get visas and so many western outlets have been using the word visa very incorrectly in this context.
Thanks for the info.🙋🏻♀️
You're welcome
Gosh - the start date on this is a moving target! One always needs to check, no matter how often they travel. Things change.
I filmed thisbwhen it was January, then it switched to May. Then moved to November. Probably will change again
LOVE the video editing!! Looks so good 🙌🏾Oh they did move the date back! My son has a US passport (mine is Irish) and I was googling this last year when we were travelling back to Ireland 😆 this doesn’t apply to him until he’s 18 though. if it’s anything like the ETAS to US it’s very easy as long as you follow what you said about not leaving it till the last minute! Easier than the Covid testing red tape we all just went through 😂
Thanks for the warning.
Thank you!
You are welcome
It's not a visa, and Europeans have had to do the same thing coming to the US on vacation for the past 20 years.
Okay so what
This got pushed to 2024, thank you for the video and bringing this up!
I bet it gets pushed back again
@Wolters World I wouldn't doubt it. It's a huge undertaking.
amazing, im going to Europe in a few days so i guess this is no longer something i need to worry about
@@woltersworldthey have to do something about the long process time for people who get flagged.
As a English 🏴 person and being a (British passport holder) we will have to get ETIAS too. I have always had to get ESTA to visit the USA 🇺🇲 also. Apparently the countries of England 🏴, Scotland 🏴 and Wales 🏴 will as part of the current UK 🇬🇧 (subject to change) be launching a ETA travel authorization for non British citizens and permanent residence too but I'm not sure when that will launch. So it looks like this will become the norm.
Another "benefit" of Brexit, this ETA/ETIAS between the UK and the EU.
travelers from Africa come to Europe free of passport and visa ... US citizen may use wooden boat over Atlantic to avoid EU immigration camp.
I’m planning on traveling to Greece next year and I’m hesitant to book my trip until I’m able to actually get the ETIAS visa
My daughter is studying abroad in England next year, thank you for telling me!
This doesn’t apply to the UK. Though if she is in the UK it can be very cheap to visit Europe, and then she would need it, so could be worth getting anyway.

I'm going to be traveling to England in 2024, then taking a cruise ship to Norway.
Will I need 1 set of paperwork to enter England, and another set for Norway?
Thanks!
Thank for the info. Is a layover stop on the way to my destination considered a destination on my ETIAS visa application? Thank you.
I would recommend you look on the official ETIAS web site.
While aware of the upcoming ETIAS and EES, I did not know that you have to state which Schengen country you intend to visit first. Of course, not a problem for people booking their holiday months in advance, but citizens of countries bordering Schengen may wish to get their ETIAS immediately to avoid complications later, then need to cross a border without 72 hours notice. I think that requirement needs to be addressed.
The list of countries bordering the Schengen Area that will need ETIAS is: Albania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Ukraine and the UK.
Also, 72 hours is supposed to be the maximum, I'm sure most will be approved in a matter of minutes if not instantly.
@@reo.incognito it's citizens of all visa exempt countries, so all except EU, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swiss and Liechtenstein citizens
@@grassytramtracks I was replying to another comment that was talking specifically about countries with a border with the Schengen Area.
Those are the ones I listed, The rest of the countries that will also need ETIAS do not share a land border with the Schengen Area.
Now they’re saying it may take up to 30 days to get a response in some cases. Apply early folks!
someone knows what happends if you are dual citizen like from USA and Spain ? i need to get the ETIAS anyways for going back to the USA for example ?
No price information on the ETIAS site yet. Guess we’ll see how this pans out……
Hey will you still get stamps traveling all over Europe.
I had no idea that you need to fill out this form in order to visit certain countries in Europe.
It's not until November 2023 and you only do it once every 3 years
It is not just for Americans. It also applies to Canadians, Britts, etc.
Damn
I think they copies are because some people don't have smart phones
It will apply to us Brits as well
Yes it will
Indeed it will. I'll avoid with my French passport, but everyone visiting most EU countries who is not a citizen of the EU/EEA/CH or one of the 4 European microstates will have to do it
It's how it always should have been. We need visas to travel to US why shouldn't Americans need visas to travel to Europe.
It will also require you to submit a facial recognition photo that will be put on a police facial recognition database of non EU citizens.
Will people with long stay visas issued by member countries (France) have to apply for etias when going or returning to Europe?
Love your videos, always full of great information. I am planning a trip to Europe before November. I plan to visit 18 Schengen country. I have 8 blank page in my passport. Will I need more blank pages? Thanks
18 countries in 1 trip ? That would be so American.
Can you please provide a link to apply for a visa! Thanks.
Hi I’m planning on traveling to Paris April 26-28 . Reading your pinned message and title I can travel normally with my US passport? Thanks in advance
It's not actually a visa. The US has been doing it to visa exempt travelers for quite some time. I think it's called ESTA. More like an online registration just to alert the state that one's entering their border in advance. Last time I've heard, UK is gonna follow suit as well
But it seems like once you enter another country with your passport especially with the new chipped passports then the information is already in the computer
Yes it’s not a visa, but people can get rejected for it just like esta; I’d say it’s similar to an e-visa
You are right that it is called ESTA The one that the US made for travelers such as the ones coming from Europe so didn’t used to need it but already have a passport.
@@RomilCPatel i’m curious, how can people get rejected for things like an ESTA And the reverse such as what the United States is going to come out with.? Would it just be if people have a criminal past or something major like that? But it seems like a person would be rejected for a passport anyway.
@@enjoyslearningandtravel7957 you can get rejected for ESTA if you have travelled to certain countries for example Iran. Also for having same name as internationally wanted person or if ever deported from the country. Not sure if ETIAS has list of countries you shouldn't have travelled.
Whats the maximum stay in the uk with just a passport... I looked that i can still up to six months but im still confused cuz the. I also see that i need a standard visa.. is my passport a standard visa this is my first time traveling to the uk.. I'm really confused I know it's not part of Europe as anymore but I need answers
What do you mean 90 out of 180?
this still easy... some contries want visit ausa they need america visa more complicated than this
The target should be to make travel easier - not more difficult. I cannot understand that.
Here's a simple question. I'm an American citizen with a current, valid U.S. passport. I'm visiting London in April 2023. I want to take a train from London to visit France. What do I need to enter France? Thanks.
Nothing, it is still visa free until November 1st 2023.
Why? What's the rational with these new visas? Both the US and Europa.
It has been case for Europeans going to USA for some years now. I don't remember when it started, but it was eell before pandemic. I believe it's to give the counties an idea of who is visiting. I can also add, that if you answer just wrong, your ESTA authorization will be denied and you will have to apply for an actual visa via tge US embassy, which right now will take you around 6 months to get an interview in Denmark.
A research showed me that USA has demanded ESTA since 2008.
@@wncjan it seems like the United States would know who’s visiting by their passport which the border patrol can enter or scan into their computers I imagine.
I know from a German friend who was traveling to United States and one of the questions on the visa waiver was, have you been involved with it any Nazis things in the second war? This is not verbatim. Actually it’s sort of a strange question because she wasn’t even born then and most people traveling would have to be at age 80s or 90s I suppose.
@@enjoyslearningandtravel7957 I am asked if I have ever committed a crime, if come tonUSA to commit terror ect.
Thanks, Wolter.
Since last summer people from my country (the Netherlands) are eligible for Global Entry in the US. Does this omit the need for ESTA, or would I still be needing that?
Global entry is just to expedite the process at the border, but you still need permission to enter the US, so if you are not a US citizen you either need a visa or a visa waiver (ESTA)
Of course, if you are from Afghanistan no passport or I'd is required, in some cases you get a free hotel, food and free medical etc
How long can a US citizen stay in the UK?
Have you heard of the proof of income when entering Spain being an actual thing?
I have heard so many different points on that topic. I just can’t find anything officially that say you need to bring copies of bank statement
It's something they ask if they are suspicious of a specific person
You need to go prepare . Its a thing in any EU country .
A little warning from a dumbo who fell for this before: There is a good chance of dummy websites will crop up that look like the real thing and ask for €80 or something. Dummy here did that for Australian ETA & my aunt fell for it with ESTA. You still have it processed but you just paid €70 odd more for a third party to do it for you. So make sure you keep official sites and if it asking for way too much take a double take that you’re on the right website. Don’t do what my dumb ass did 🤡
That sucks :( thanks for the reminder on this.
@@woltersworld No problem,. I’m sure the dummy versions of the EU version will pop up. For a little while the actual ESTA website ranked lower than the fakes on Google
Do you know if ETIAS is pushed back to 2025 for Canadian?
Do you need a visa to go to france or portugal as us citizen once you arrive to those countries, besides the us passport, do i have to show hotel and plane ticket and where i work and my paystubb and bank acount and checks or just my us passport, plane ticket and hotel where i am staying either in france or portugal for 2024
If you are landing in an EU country and changing planes on your way to your EU destination, do you list the stop over as the first country visited?
I guess not. Hotel reservations etc will prove which country you visit first.
Is first country the country in which you land before going on to another country? Example: Land in Germany to transfer to a plane heading to Portugal.
I would say it's the country you go through immigration in. If you have connecting flight without leaving airside, the country will be Portugal. If you need to re-check-in your luggage in Germany on your way to Portugal (two different tickets), you'll put Germany, because for that you need to clear customs and immigration first.
@@mikiqex I don’t think this info is correct. The normal procedure is to clear immigration at the first point your aircraft lands in the Schengen area. The flight from Germany to Portugal in this example is the equivalent of an internal flight. Pax flying just from Germany to Portugal will never go near an immigration check. On the Customs side your hand baggage is checked as you first enter the EU. You normally don’t need to recheck hold baggage, it is customs checked at your final destination. With all of this remember that the EU and the Schengen area aren’t the same thing.
Thank You! I do have 1 question though. Example: US citizen flies to London. Boards a cruise ship in Southampton and visits Portugal and Spain, then returns to Southampton. Will an ETIAS be required for these port stops?
Yes of course. The ETIAS requirement will apply to all points of entry to Schengen countries, including marine ports.
I've booked a trip for Italy thru Expedia for 2024 and nothing was mentioned about this. These travel sites need to alert people about this. I've talked to so many people that knew nothing about this. And how accurate and detailed do you need to be when filling out the form? They want to know your first stop when you apply. Yet, it is good for 3 years (or expiration of passport), meaning it is not necessary to indicate your first stop for additional European trips? Doesn't make sense. And no date is set when in 2024 this will take effect.
@Randy.
My friend they did mention this all over the news and social media. It was mentioned a few months ago when this was just a plan to help ensure the safety of the ppl. But I think it's due to $$$ I mean how many ppl travel to Europe every year??? A LOT!!! so, to make more $$$ out of us travelers, they want to charge us without saying "give us your $$$" even though it is only $7.73 USD. Still just imagine how many ppl travel every day? Anyhow, it's stupid and I heard that USA might do the same thing to the other countries as well.
Good luck friend.
@@tristachau490 The US system was introduced in 2009 and it was free. Now it costs $ 21 for 2 years.
ETIAS will be introduced in September 2024, but before then you can enter any EU country with your US passport.
From September 2024, you will need to apply for your ETIAS travel permit for the country you are visiting first. You can leave the country in any other EU country.

i don't even know how to fill out for a regular visa never mind an ETIAS one I've never traveled outside of the United States ever I don't even know what's in volved in the process of it all sounds over bearingly complicated to me. Do You Need This ETIAS To Travel To The United Kingdom London As Well ?
Not for the UK. It's a simple online form. I'm guessing the airlines will be helpful in reminding people to get it
So as of now do I need a visit to go tour/ visit UK?
I plan to travel to Austria in a few months
Just to be clear, I dont need to apply unless i go this NOVEMBER RIGHT?
I’m us citizens. Am going to London, France, Rome, and Greece on this June. Do I need to apply anything yet? Thanks in advance.
No, this will not come into action before 2025.
This is going to cause a nightmare for dual citizens. Airlines I assume will want proof of visa (a rose by any other name - it’s a visa) to check in, but if you have an EU passport too you can’t (can only enter with EU passport) get one. However, it has long been an issue that none of the airlines let you put in info for two passports. And you must leave the US on your US passport by law, so you have to enter it with airlines. Another issue is that first trip. We often have to go with no notice for family reasons. What a pain. Thanks for all the great info.
Sure about leaving the US with US passport? Pretty sure for entering the U.S. though.
@@cs296 According to the US The Government FAQ says you are suppose to for “leaving and entering.” Interesting though they recently updated to include the word “normally” and added a statement that use of a foreign passport does not endanger US citizenship. We always follow what they say, but we have friends with dual citizenship that just use one passport and don’t worry about it and there has never been an issue. But we don’t take any risk with it.
How do you think dual citizens who reside in Europe travel to the U.S. now with ESTA and all? So same thing. You can book a ticket to Europe using any passport - when exiting the U.S. you can show your U.S. passport because the TSA doesn’t care what passport you bought the ticket on. And even if you bought the ticket on your U.S. passport, at the check in counter all you need to do is briefly show them your EU passport and they will leave you alone ETIAS-wise. Simple.
It won’t affect much, I am Australian and also EU national. Before I embark on plane from Aus I use my Aus passport and then when I travel to Europe I use my EU when I land. Flying companies accept dual passport if they would even say something.
@@nicschintee1511 unfortunately the US Airlines are not as sophisticated. They have issues with understanding dual citizenship.
Actually, the American authorities don't treat equally the Europeans. I am a EU citezen, but as a Romanian I have to go to the American embassy in the country where I live and apply for the tourist visa and have an interview. All this because Romania, although being part of the EU for the last 15 years, is not part of the Waver program, like all the other 26 countries.

Do you have to update the entry country on return visits within the 3 years? I understand the first time you apply. I can't remember what we do with the ESTA in that respect. Also crazy you need to print two copies out
It may change in the future. This video was filmed based on this summers rules.
I think you have to but it's free of charge and only an edit on your existing ESTA.
The States also recommend to have a copy with you.
Welcome to a European's experience of visiting the US. Only an ESTA is valid for 2 years, not 3.
