Great point! In my experience cruise lines are pretty good about ensuring their passengers' paperwork is in order, but it's certainly good to be proactive about it.
It’s the Americans freaking out about the ETIAS (what will cost I think 7 EUR). The Americans have their ESTA (what costs I think 21 USD) since decades. I think it’s just a problem for the Americans because it’s something new. They don’t like new things/systems.
Thanks Nora for this very useful video. However, I am a bit confused. So, it is postponed to 2025? I was thinking of applying for it in December as I was planning to go to Spain in April 2024. Would you mind clarifying? If it is 2025, you gave me the best news of the year and you are a star!,❤❤❤
Sounds like a USA ESTA the rest of us apply for travel to the USA, but cheaper. No big deal. For the avoidance of doubt, EU citizens in non-Shengen countries listed such as Cyprus and Ireland do not require any documentation or ETIAS for travel throughout the EU, as their passport or approved ID card will suffice. This also applies to citizens of Northern Ireland who hold an Irish passport, despite Northern Ireland being part of the UK. (Confused? If this doesn't apply to you or your family members, ignore it.)
@@SN-bl6xm My understanding is that citizens of the EU member countries and participants in the Schengen Agreement like CH will be treated the same, not requiring them to file an ETIAS for free travel within the area.
Neither they (boat people) nor the migrational jihadis are affected. It is to control the (primarily) Western tourists (read: sheep) that contribute hundreds of billions to the EU economy yearly.
Of course not. Rules are only in place to take money from, and inconvenience the law abiding people. Criminals don't are not law abiding. No one needs to leave France and seek refugee status elsewhere, anyone claiming to be a refugee when leaving France (and the eu) is both a fraud and a liar!
To me the challenge with ETAIS is airline tickets that are non-refundable. So I would want to have travel authorization before booking flights and then I'd have to see if flights are still affordable/available. That probably means no travel two-three months after approval. It would be very helpful to be able to apply well before I plan to travel. The alternative would be travel insurance which is pretty expense and I'm not sure it covers an EITAS refusal.
You do the same as Europeans do with the US ESTA. You apply for it in advance before you buy the ticket. It takes maximum 3-4 days to get the approval. And it is not only valid for one trip, but for two years. So no stress there needed.
They even recommend that you apply at least a month before your departure. You will be able to apply earlier but of course that shortens the remaining validity period after that first voyage. Your ETIAS will be valid for 3 years or less if your passport expires before. I don't think any insurance will be willing to cover ETIAS refusal as you should know (or are able to find out) if you are legible for ETIAS or not.
ETIAS will basically be the European equivalent to the American ESTA that we EU citizens have been subject to for quite a few years now. And, as Nora puts it here, truly not a big deal. It's not a visa; I've worked at a consular section in th past and, you can believe me, the procedure to obtain a visa is a different story, and a lengthier one, than the simple ETIAS or ESTA formalities.
@travelvideos And now from another European: Finaly they can actually check the security status of those crossing the border. You might not like it, I do.
Hello, I intend to go at the end of July this year with my brother to carry out the administrative recognition process for Italian citizenship, but I am uncertain about my immigration situation. On my first trip to Europe, in July 2023, I returned to Brazil in December 2023, exceeding the legal limit by 2 months due to the birth of my cousin's son, who needed my assistance in Portugal. Entry and exit registrations were made in Madrid, Spain, without any warning. Can you tell me if I will have any problems with immigration from Italy, even after completing 180 days outside the Schengen area? Thanks!
As a us citizen do you need a visa to go to france, netherlands, germany, italy, and portugal, what do they ask you once you arrive to these countries in europe once you arrive in the check point
No, you don't need a visa. These countries are in the Schengen zone, and you are allowed to stay for up to 90 days (in all combined). They may ask you where you're going and how long you plan to stay. They may also ask you for a copy of your flight out of Europe, though I don't think I've ever been asked for it.
Once I arrive in these countries they may ask where I work, and show where I work and my pay stubs and bank acount and how much money do I bring and they check my phone, or just my passport and plane ticket. So the etias is going to start on the mid 2025
The ETIAS is the same like the American ESTA what everyone visiting the USA needs to have. Since decades travelers to the USA fill out and pay the Americans for the ESTA. I don’t know why for Americans it’s such a scary thing to fill out a ETIAS and pay for it. On other YT channels they say that the ETIAS is even much cheaper then the ESTA.
Hello there, thank you for your video. I'm a bit confused....I looked on ETIAS website it says not operational. Where can I get apply because I have a trip coming up.
Does an ETIAS application require a specific flight number, or can we just apply at any time and have it cover any travel for the blanket (3 year?) period?
Good vid, again (you should do this stuff for a living! 😂) There are currently 27 full EU members - EU27, which was EU28 until my fellow countrymen decided to leave the biggest & most successful tradin bloc in history to Take Back Control (note the capitals) and re-enter Splendid Isolation. Luckily, I'm legally Irish, which means I have no probelm travellling in the EU, Schengen, or continental Europe, though my British registered motorbike is occasionally a red flag!
I'm not Irish, and i have zero problems travelling into and through the eu... Just like the Russian woman i was talking to on the ferry from St Petersburg to Helsinki 10 years ago, who was travelling to Berlin, but chose the quickest, easiest way out of Russia and into Schengen, where she could then travel freely. I guess that like all anti brexit pro eu extremists, you thought that the eu awarded you the right to travel freely, when the actual fact, is that the eu pillar you refer to, is the 'free movement of labour'. And it isn't for your benefit. It exists for the big multinational businesses to move HQ staff around departments in different eu countries. And was then used to move cheap labour en masse from the east to western europe, to keep wages suppressed. But it's cute that you think the eu is a good and successful thing. It's main success is the erosion and destruction of democracy... So i wonder what that says about its supporters?

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. On the official ETAIS website it says slated for lauch in and required for travel in 2024? Where was the move to 2025 mentioned?
Yeah it's odd that they haven't updated the site yet. They have an article buried on the site about the delay, which has also been published on other media. etias.com/articles/etias-implementation-likely-delayed-to-2025
Hi there , May I know the latest update, do I need a EITAS visa in 2024 from Malaysia, or the EITAs visa will effective on May 2025 so can wait until 2025 to apply? Tks
At this moment it looks like it will be delayed until 2025. I'm sure the airline will let you know because they will have to check for it when you check in.
So i saw online the app asks for your medical info & pre existing conditions. Is this true and are there any they can ban you for? Like, i have an old hip replaced & some sciatica, but i don't see why it's their buisness to know. Also, they ask about travel plans on the app, but can you still apply for the E if nothing's written in stone just to be sure you're cleared?
I'm not sure about the medical info and pre-existing conditions. I'm surprised these are questions! Regarding onward travel plans, technically it has always been the case that you need to show proof of onward travel, which is perhaps what they're asking about. I don't know if you can still apply fr the ETIAS if nothing is firm; ETIAS isn't going to take effect until 2025 now, so I suspect things will change between now and then.
@@NoraDunn OK, thanks. I guess I can wait until I actually have concrete plans. I know when I applied for my passport, it asked about plans and I left it blank because I just know I wanna go somewhere, but not sure exactly where or when. @@pinkfreud62Official website says, ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are collected at this point. Other websites with application, you can currently found, are not official. No; the length of stay depends on your passport and the type of visa you're getting. ETIAS is an additional step/screening process and covers you for however many times you enter Europe in three years.
I live in Texas. I could spend decades exploring the United States. I've been to Europe many, many times, but if this is the new normal for Europe, I'll keep my money at home.
I hope you realize I wasn't criticizing you. I recently retired from being a flight attendant after 33 years. Nearly all of it was international travel. I haven't seen as much of the U.S.A. as the rest of the world. I, for one, never want to see the inside of an airport or airliner ever again.@@NoraDunn
Same with Europeans who could spend the rest of their lives exploring Europe instead of filling out and paying for the American ESTA (what costs more than the European ETIAS). 😉
@@NoraDunn Many thanks for the update Nora. Although the UK is not in the EU any longer, I'm from Northern Ireland (and hold dual citizenship UK/Ireland) and also have an Irish/EU passport. I had anticipated that an ETIAS would not be necessary for travel to Europe. In addition, the 90 day rule does not apply to EU passport holders which is a bonus.
Thank you. I had forgotten to tell you that I'm in the USA and traveling to Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein and Austria, but you must've figured out that I'm from a non-Schengen nation traveling into at least one Schengen nation. Thanks for the quick reply. @@NoraDunn
I think if you have residence you're fine, but I can't say for sure. The ETIAS website should have that info (and if they don't yet, they will, closer to the 2025 launch date).
@@NoraDunn I went to their site and found this in the FAQ: "I have residency status or a residency card in an E.U. member country, do I need ETIAS? No, if you have a residency card or residency status in an EU country, you will not need to apply for an ETIAS but will need to travel using your proof of residency and a valid passport."
Yes. As I say in the video and the description, it has been postponed until 2025. Indeed, no need to worry - but as I've been getting emails and questions about it for many weeks, I thought I would create some content about it.
Gate agents watch the hand/arm sign the flight attendant uses to alert gate agent the door is armed.DONT OPEN DOOR! If a/c door is armed and is opened. Slide blows out with such force it would kill anyone on jet bridge
Yes. The UK and Republic of Ireland have 'the common travel area', which is basically a smaller version of schengen, just between our 2 countries. It is because of this common travel area, that the Republic of Ireland can't join Schengen itself... To join Schengen, they would need to leave our common travel area, and set up a proper hard border with the UK. They probably wouldn't do that, as the Irish make massive use of what is called 'the land bridge', polluting England and Wales with hundreds (maybe a thousand) of lorries everyday, driving across us, to get from the Irish sea to the English channel or North sea.
@@amateurcameraman The UK is to introduce its own ETA at some point. The Common Travel Area (between Ireland/UK) protects citizens resident in Ireland (an EU member but not Schengen) from needing to apply for ETA if travelling to Northern Ireland or Great Britain. There may be an issue as regards tourists visiting Ireland and wishing to travel to Northern Ireland or GB. This is a recognised problem although I doubt it has been resolved.
@@AndrewKNI it works the other way too. The ESTA is a schengen policy. Ireland not being able to be in Schengen, whilst still in our common travel area, means anyone travelling from the UK to ROI won't need at ESTA. If they then travel from ROI direct to a Schengen member state, then they will need an ESTA to make that journey, whereas an Irish Passport holder making the same journey into Schengen can enter with just their Irish passport or national ID card.
ETIAS going to exist at sometime in the future seems a stupid reason to cancel a trip. How do you cope with everyday life? What would you do if you needed to actually do something hard like a visa? Millions of people fill in the US equivalent (ESTA) every year to visit the USA. Seems a daft reason. Booking rail tickets is harder than the ESTA, and based on the information given, the ETIAS isn't much different.

I don't believe there is an official official start date yet, so don't sweat it. You'v'e got time :-) Also, the airline will most certainly be contacting you about ETIAS if it's going to be in effect when you fly.
I'm not totally sure, and I don't want to lead you astray. I think you'll be fine. You'll know for sure when ETIAS is launched - which isn't for some time yet.
If I have dual nationality do I have to use the same passport when entering and leaving the Schengen zone? For example I have UK and German nationality, can I use my UK passport when travelling from Germany to the UK, the UK will also introducing a pre-registration system called ETA, and the my German passport when travelling from the UK to Germany. Similarly a friend of mine has US and German nationality, can they avoid ESTA and ETIAS by using different passports for each trip?
It’s the exact same like in the USA. Since decades travelers have to have a ESTA and pay for it, while people cross the US border illegally. It’s everywhere the same in every country globally.
And then there are the exceptions - fx Greenland, part of the kingdom of Denmark but not part of the EU 😊 and also not part of the Schengen zone 😊 Some other EU countries have similar areas 😊 Just saying
I hope these governments involved have realized how badly they have screwed themselves. I was going to take 9 months and spend $18000. Now I will spend 3 months and spend $6000. Perhaps if the Europeans catch on to this they'll change it.
The Schengen zone is about much more than tourism. I believe it's more about the lack of border control and free trade, which is way more consequential than long-term tourism dollars, since most tourists don't travel for more than 3 months anyway, relatively speaking.
And how long can a European spend in the USA with the American ESTA? I think also max 3 months! So perhaps if the Americans catch on to this they’ll change it. 😉
I heard that Europe was going to start requiring VISAs for US travelers in 2024. The company we booked our cruise (June 2024) with hasn't updated that with their travel documents page yet. I suppose I should go google that, huh?
No, Europe is not asking for visas. But they will have the same like the American ESTA. The European one is called ETIAS and will be starting in 2024/2025. It’s not a visa. It’s the same as the US ESTA, just called ETIAS and for Europe.
According to the British newspapers, this ( ETIAS) only applies to British travellers and was introduced to victimise the British for Brexit . ( Yes I know it is rubbish. Tell the UK newspapers )
Travel to the USA. To enter you need a ESTA form what will cost you 21 USD. Or you can travel to Europe where you will need a ETIAS form what will cost you 7 EUR. 🤷🏼
I have decided to require all residents on earth to have a valid earth presence visa, valid for one year only. Payable to myself for 5 dollars. Now is not that a great bargain.

I think you'll be able to apply well before you travel if you wish. The ETIAS is good for a couple of years once approved.
ETIAS should be valid for 3 years
You do the same as Europeans do with the US ESTA. You apply for it in advance before you buy the ticket. It takes maximum 3-4 days to get the approval. And it is not only valid for one trip, but for two years. So no stress there needed.
@@PascalGienger Exactly. Thanks Pascal!
Apologies for ETIAS. As a European, I never supported such thing.
It's truly not a big deal. And you certainly need not apologize! ;-)

Thanks!
Sorry this is outside my area of expertise.
@@NoraDunn No problem, thank you! :)
Now it says it will start second half of 2024 so around July 2024
Really? Last I heard it was postponed to 2025. Let's see what happens!
@@jorgeurbano7881 Great point, Jorge! They can ask about your work and proof of income (to demonstrate you have the money to travel).
@@NoraDunn ok, but there are not strict as canada
Will you need to fill one of these visa type forms if you are not leaving the airport but just waiting for your connecting flight to your destination
If you are transiting through without leaving the airport, you should be fine.

Just wanted to say I am enjoying your videos very informative
@@markhosbrough9180 Thanks Mark!
I’m glad I traveled to Europe in 2021 before this ETIAS mess. I had a great vacation!
It truly won't be a big deal. Not to worry!
You still have time for another great Euro trip before ETIAS goes into effect.
Thanks. But I’m out of money! 😅
It will take effect in 2025.
Does an ETIAS application require a specific flight number, or can we just apply at any time and have it cover any travel for the blanket (3 year?) period?
I don't yet know, since it hasn't been launched. But not to worry - it looks like it has been postponed until 2025.
Good vid, again (you should do this stuff for a living! 😂)
There are currently 27 full EU members - EU27, which was EU28 until my fellow countrymen decided to leave the biggest & most successful tradin bloc in history to Take Back Control (note the capitals) and re-enter Splendid Isolation.
Luckily, I'm legally Irish, which means I have no probelm travellling in the EU, Schengen, or continental Europe, though my British registered motorbike is occasionally a red flag!
Nice! And thanks, Ian :-)
?????????
I’m going to Italy in April and May
So what do I do
You'll be fine. This has been delayed until 2025.
Good afternoon Nora me and my husband planning to visit next august 2024. Me and I holding a U.S. passport but I’m dual . If there any requirements, to bring or just only plane ticket and passport .I’m am right. Please respond immediately for peace of mind. Thank Nora
ETIAS won't happen until 2025, so you are good with your passport!
Hi Nora… if I land in Hamburg Germany and transition on to Egypt do I need a ETIAS? I will not be leaving the airport.
No, I believe you won't need an ETIAS if you don't leave the airport.
@@NoraDunn I think it’s confirmed delay to 2025 spring right? From what I saw from the actual website?
@@travelkingdom8987 Yes, you're right!
What happens if you are a dual citizen. Say you live in Canada but are an Italian Born. Do you still need to do this?
I don't believe so, as long as you have an Italian passport and plan to enter using it.
I suppose an US passport holder that also has a EU passport then doesnt need to apply for Etias if travelling to Europe
I believe you're correct, as long as you enter using your EU passport.
Can you stay for three years with the ETIAS ?
No; the length of stay depends on your passport and the type of visa you're getting. ETIAS is an additional step/screening process and covers you for however many times you enter Europe in three years.
Luckily I am only planning on Serbia for my next trip.
Easy peasy!
So it’s now 2025? I don’t have to apply for ETIAS for my trip to Norway this June right?

Wow!
I beLieve that older predating laws on Irish independence allow for freedom of movement between the uk and eire
Hm. Interesting - let's see!
@@amateurcameraman Good point, thank you.
Thanks for this video. We've cancelled our 3 week tour of Europe because we don't like complicated restricted travel.
Oh no, really? Because ETIAS has been delayed to 2025.
If you don't want any complications or restrictions then there is only 1 solution : stay at home.
