When I was young the only manga the bookstore in my tiny coastal Oregon town had where assorted Shonen Jump issues, so I'd always have to not only come up with my own ending to the series, but also the beginning too, since you'd get like chapter 24 of the manga and that's about it

Honestly, the cool part about living in an European country is that anime was a much bigger thing here 20+ years ago than it was in the US. I’ve still got multiple VHS from old anime that was famous her back in the 60s-70s, and, additionally, these constantly got DVD rereleases. Grew up watching Future Boy Conan, Maya the Bee, Heidi of The Alps, Marco, and multiple others thanks to this (even though I’m only 22).
Additionally, we just had much more anime on TV here, from Sailor Moon to Doraemon.

Extinct theme park attractions are my favorite type of lost media because since there was only ever one, they're PERMANENTLY lost and literally can never be experienced firsthand ever again. It adds a sort of magic to it when you find a recording of the attraction or even just a photo if it's really obscure. Like I don't even know if we have very little documentation of Rube Dugan's Diving Bell at Silver Dollar city, which is a travesty in itself, but it's even worse since the attraction was partially designed by the legendary Disney Imagineering team.
Oh! You might want to check out the NiGHTS into Dreams datamine project going on right now. Lost media that's been right under our Saturn 3D Control Pads for 26 years. The team is getting really close to finding lost boss character Selph, and may have even already found what the shape of her head looked like.

10:11 Ive been studying the early days of anime and manga in the United States. I find it just as fascinating as you do. In fact, I study both media forms starting from the 60s (Astro Boy, Gigantor, Speed Racer), up to the early days of the internet (early UA-cam, web forums, etc). With manga, I study it from the 70s to the 00s (Studio Proteus, et el). I must add that you mentioned bootleg VHS, I actually have 100+ bootleg anime tapes in my collection.
13:26 Back. int he 80s and 90s, conventions had bootleg vendors set up shop in the dealers room. Although this was illegal, even having cons go as far as have bootleg police walk around the venue to shut them down, they still managed to sell these bootlegged manga and anime to fans of the medium.

24:27 Hey, that's me! Never thought I would be featured in a LSSQ video lol
To correct you on your coverage of Animax dubs:
Animax themselves did not make these dubs. They were outsourced to other recording studios, usually Omni Productions and Red Angel Media in Hong Kong. Contrary to popular belief, the voice casts are primarily composed of native English speakers and actors that lived in the area, several being from America.
Dubs by these studios would be done cheaply and quickly, actors often finding themselves working on three shows per day.
You are correct in that Animax only had broadcasting rights to these dubs and VERY few received a home video or streaming release, the biggest exception being Cardcaptor Sakura. According to one of the former owners of Omni, he estimates he worked on over 300 dubs during his time with the company, most airing on Animax and Cartoon Network Asia. The majority are lost to time.
Also for the record the FMAB dub from Hong Kong was in production the same year the anime came out: 2009. This dub, like many others made in Hong Kong, doesn't take into account anything done in American versions. Most VAs I talk to from HK haven't even heard the American version.
I am very passionate about trying to preserve these dubs or at least hunt for details. I'm glad I could help discover part the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood dub.

I know this is going to sound strange, but the kind of lost media that fascinates me most is "lost creators/credits"
This is when you have a piece of media where the people who worked on it are not known.
For me personally, this is especially fascinating when it comes to old games (especially the bad ones).
I love interviews with people who worked on bad games and finding out what may have caused it to be rushed etc. I cannot tell you how much I'd love to see an interview with the people who worked on The Uncanny Xmen on NES. What the hell happened?
The book "The Lost Story of Japanese Game Development" is filled with this stuff and its amazing. I would LOVE to see this kind of thing for the Western games industry. Before these people die and their stories are lost forever.

that possibly-lost-if-there-even-is-a-full-art of Super Sonic has me interested cuz i cannot think of many times for a JP game where icons that are clearly based on using cropped out versions of character artwork not having a full image source from somewhere.
there are indeed many times of an icon made just to be an icon, but i'd like to believe this is one of those cases where they had art an repurposed it where they could. obviously its still possible they just made the head and that was it, its just not usually what happens.
but just because its "not usually" doesnt mean its not still a possibility.
with me not knowing anything about the actual game, i would question if there is a sort of gallery with full character art except for Super Sonic "for some reason". if there is something like that then i would have to wonder if a texture dump has been done on the game yet.
edit: it seems there has been a sprite dump and there are no character art files, just hud icons, but there are like 3 per character for different facial expressions, which isnt much.
edit2: im willing to believe the icons were just made to be icons since the official Sonic Shuffle character images i can find dont match up to their in-game icons really other than its the same artist/art style.
with not knowing the game well i assumed their default expressions were part of the bigger picture, but they arent. even the angle of their heads are off in comparison. so if there IS an official Sonic Shuffle based Super Sonic art then it wont match up with the icons.

Time Crisis' 'lack of growth' is pretty easy to explain: light gun games are expensive, space consuming investments for arcade owners, big investments they're reluctant to get involved with - especially if previous entries in the series are still so profitable - like with Time Crisis 2 (and to a lesser extent 3). TC2 (and to a lesser extent 3) are still common in arcades because they still make money, so less people would be keen to order 4 or 5. Compare this to Tekken or Soul Calibur who are smaller, cheaper cabs with boards that can be swapped and that have a much shorter shelf-life (though not necessarrily due to popularity).
That said - how about a new collection, Namco? 1 to 5 and Crisis Zone? With new guns? Expensive collectors edition bullshit that you know we'll fall for?

Adding some tangential information about Animax: the channel also had a latin american version with latin american dubs. Sadly as stated in this video the quality of them was often rather poor. It was easy to tell that they were done with piss poor budgets as they recycled like the same 5 voice actors for all the shows and you could tell they were phoning it in. Yes, it was that bad. It got a chuckle out of me to learn that it also had a bad reputation for English dubs. At least it was a nice way to find new shows and a few of them got lucky with better, higher budget dubs like Death Note and Blood+. I wonder if any of them are lost media now.

I *swear* that I saw LSuperSonicQ talk about Blast Wind for the SEGA Saturn at some point, but for the life of me I cannot see, to find it right now if the video even exists anymore to the public.
Basically, the reason it was brought up was because the rumored story behind it was much more interesting: Apparently it started life as a test arcade game before it flopped, then they tried to basically humorize it way more for a second test which also failed, and now for the third and final version it is closer to the original but still changed some small elements, ultimately never ending up in an arcade release at all.
Wether this is all true is a mystery, but what I *do* know is that I discovered it from him. I think it was from a video listing off some obscure things he knows about. For all I know at this point maybe the video portion in question never existed at all, but either way it's still an interesting thing to mention since the game itself is pretty good and that the story behind the supposed inception is weird.

Thank you for finally covering Dodonpachi Campaign version!
Dodonpachi SaiDaiOuJou's arcade version was recently dumped and release (in a slightly altered form) after years of having no roms available to play on mame. As the only version that could be played at home was the Japanese only Xbox 360 port
M2 has ported Cave games before and even included the obscure Mushihimesama Futari 1.01 version for the Xbox 360 release, which I believe the original arcade PCB was only available in a contest.
And recently M2 included another obscure and unported/unreleased version of Ketsui in the Ketsui Deathtiny port for PS4
So if the relationship between Cave and M2 is still strong, they could make efforts to preserve it and track down the remaining copies

I remember that vulture short. It even had a "making of" bit where they talk about how the giant turkey wasn't actually cooked, just covered in iodine, and apparently giving it a strong smell.
And speaking of obscure/lost english dubs of anime, Crush Gear Turbo had an english dub, but it seems that it only aired in South East Asia and Oceania. There's just so little mention of it, that it couldn't have possibly aired in the US (also, an early episode had the line "gear fighters can burn in hell"). A handful of episodes got released on DVD, but by a company that only ever really did bare-bones DVD releases (even in 2006, their releases advertised "interactive menus" and "scene selection" as the sole special features on some of their releaes). Even then, they had a mostly instrumental version of the Japanese into rather than the english version that was made. They also had an instrumental version of the intro for the credits music rather than the original Japanese ending "Ai Da Yo Ne" that played during the first airing of the dub in Australia (introducing me to the awesomeness that is "JAM Project")
Though at least uploads of all the dubbed episodes still seem to exist.

Man, I had no idea DoDonPachi even had such an obscure version! It makes me wonder what other pieces of lost media there could be for 2D shooters! Shmup focused channels I watch such as Shmup Junkie haven't talk about such things before and is totally something I wish to see more of. The genre is definitely more obscure these days so having a video to catalog some of it would be really cool!

If there's one thing I know about Cave shooters, it's that there's seemingly a ton of versions with small changes between them (and I'm fairly certain a handful of them are arcade only and don't have public dumps). Considering how many of their games don't have modern releases past the Xbox 360 ports, I doubt we would see that campaign version come from them even if they still had the rom on hand. If ShouTime found a board, there's a good chance it's privately dumped, but it won't come directly from them anytime soon. Although SEGASonic Bros. somehow got out despite similar circumstances, and DoDonPachi SaiDaiOuJou got out in a weird way recently, so who knows.

    • @serraramayfield9230

SDOJ had around 100 boards. The worst case scenario for DDPCV is that the board held by NAI is the only one left, however it's also possible that Shoutime has another board. According to Cave, they've lost the source code & whatever PCBs they may have had...I wouldn't be surprised if they were sold off by accident or are simply lost in storage.

The issue I have with looking for lost media is the things i'm interested in looking for often don't gage interest from anybody else. I usually do what I can on my own, but when nothing comes up and I ask for help, whether through making threads on the LMW forums, talking about them on the LMW Discord, or even contacting Lost Media content creators, no one seems interested so at that point i'm at a stand-still. What's especially frustrating about the forums in particular, is that I know a significant amount of people have read some of my threads but yet chose to not reply.

For me it helps to just say that you really want help with it and that even just a little comment helps. I don't like asking for help usually, but ive learned that a lot of people don't like offering help because they don't know for sure if you want help, which may seem weird but hey, brain wacky lol.

Maybe you could seek out a specific community that involves your topic and see if there's interest there?

I have a recommendation (I don't know if you take recommendations). There was an animatronic pizza restaurant chain open from 1982-1984 called "Tex Critter's Pizza Jamboree." They had an animatronic show called "The Country Critters" and some of the shows survive today (one person that owns a full set is CavitySam). The hunt is for more footage of them as the only piece of footage we have is from the AVG demo reel (AVG Productions is the company that made the animatronics). Some more information about DDP Campaign Version
-The hyper mode probably didn't make the player invincible, the theory with Campaign Version is that it was made as a test for the scoring system in the game's sequel, DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, so it's likely the hyper mode worked the same in DDPCV as it did in DOJ. (See also: The bee tokens, they give score based on your current hit count, which is a feature that doesn't exist in the original DDP but does exist in DOJ). Can't know for sure though since, you know, we can't play it.
-There is one more known winner of the contest, that being SOF-WTF, who is the player in the VHS tape. It's also suspected that his board was the one at Daytona III since he regularly visited that arcade at the time it was there.
-The most likely way it would be found if M2 ShotTriggers decided to port DDP, which definitely isn't impossible. M2STG likes to include a bunch of different versions of the games in their port, and a lost version of Ketsui was actually found because M2STG released it in their port of that game. However apparently CAVE's relationship with M2 was kind of soured by the ESP Ra De port because they felt like they didn't have enough control of it and Atlus had too much, and Atlus also published DDP, so... (UPDATE: CAVE published new streaming guidelines which includes a full list of games they own the rights to, which confirms they DO still own the rights to DoDonPachi)
Also unrelated but a fun easter egg in the DoDonPachi games, the default leaderboard is the top 5 scores of the previous game in the series at the time of that game's release with a digit or two removed (ie. DDP's leaderboard was the top 5 highest scores in DonPachi in 1997 with the last digit cut off)

It seems that the hyper in DDPCV doubled the base value of whatever you killed, which I don't think was carried over for DOJ. Also if hyper buffs your Shot+Laser like it does later on is not known, as there is no hyper specific shot+laser animations. But the ability to cancel bullets upon activation seemed to have carried over, and DFK and SDOJ seemed to have gone go back to the DDPCV system of making hyper ready as soon as the meter filled instead of DOJ's hyper being a item one needs to pick up.

You should discourage newcomers from reaching out to ex and current employees. In the early days, the proto game community messed up interactions with developers. They hassled and pestered them and caused several developers to cease communication with the public. To this day it’s left to select members because not everyone does it correctly.
In regards to Naruto and every other subject you talk about, you shouldn’t assume that lost media is only what we have sparse documentation of. Businesses experiment internally and rarely does that material see the light of day. All kinds of products get pitched to owners of popular IPs. Plus I’m sure Naruto has early drafts of scripts, art etc that we don’t know about.
It’s great that you’ve branched out to other consoles and video games. Video game obscurities from Nintendo tend to hog the spotlight. There are countless games, several consoles and computers that deserve love too.

It showed you being nice to the girl at the party, then cuts to her cinematically running up and saving you in a battle, then cut back to other scenes as a kid and how those choices effected the world later, none of which ever made it to the game. Ive never been able to find it again and was really disappointed in fo3 because of the lack of impact in these desicions but also thinking it was an over the top FPS action game when its really a slow paced rpg.

So I thinkbi got a lead on the balloon short.
I'd recommend checking out the random cartoons show nicktoons ran around that time.
They aired a wide range of shorts including the adventure time pilot.
I'm almost sure that was where it was

I believe Time Crisis 5 is still getting updates and support...in Japan. So they might expand on it once that game's done with. The game did end on a bit of a cliffhanger.

The balloon short sounds/looks like it would be a bumper relating to the Nickelodeon TV version of the web series Making Fiends. The stick creatures remind me of Vendetta's fiends and the boy also looks like a Making Fiends character.

My first forays into anime that I actually knew were anime (not counting Voltron or Thundercats here) were the FUNimation Dragonball dub from 1995 (Goku, he's gonna show you! Power of the wolf!). I loved that show when I was 8. I became a total weeb long before PBF coined the term. I was obsessed with Tenchi Muyo!, Robotech (I know...I know), Ronin Warriors, Galaxy Express 999, and a whole bunch more. It was so hard to get my parents to allow me to rent any anime stuff because of them seeing the box art for Armitage and just assuming anime was just porn.

If anyone wants to go down a possible rabbithole: I remember watching this sesame street special where big bird was wearing a headset with a mic and there were chickens singing "I've got a new way to walk"
I have no idea if my mind mixed multiple episodes together or made it up entirely, but I would love to know if it actually exists and if it's lost media

The song itself was originally sung and preformed by a group called Destiny's Child with Beyonce in it. I don't know if that could help your efforts

Another good piece of lost video game art is Mega Man, currently 2 drawings of 2 bosses aren't accounted for, that being:
    -Ballade's 2nd Form
    -Bond Man

I know back in the late '80s, earlier '90s, sometimes non subtitled anime videos would be in video stores. Probably more mom and pop places. I know I watched a couple of things that way and I was more interested in the animation then needing to know everything that was going on so I didn't mind. Also there was some stuff on cable back then.

Ok so the stickman popping balloons cartoon I have indeed seen! Grey buildings, kid had a yellow shirt, and alooooot of them clicked almost when they walked, like needles almost. But alot more jagged like he drew but they had this eerie clicking to their walk. This I remember vividly. Iirc it was the same mini-show to get Adventure Time’s pilot. I will research this further and update here.
UPDATE: So it was apparently a “Nicktoons Random! Short”. Further research required.
If you wanna reach out to me, feel free. My brain is racing over this as I stumbled upon a memory.

The animax one is... interesting. I live in SEA and I had access to animax around 2013-2017 or so. Sadly my cable tv automatically set the dubs to the original japanese one so I've never heard the FMAB english dub.
