Kensington Expert TrackBall Bearings Replaced

  • Though my Expert (wired) trackball is working fine, I wanted to try the silicon nitride ball bearings based on their reputation online. Sure enough, they make a significant difference in smoothness feel and glide. It's not for everyone, but if you are a neurotic i'd recommend it.
I've replaced bearings with zirconium oxide for my Elecom Huge and Deft Pro and found that the difference was negligible and non-noticeable. I did replace the bad scratchy bearings on my Elecom EX-G Pro and the zirconium bearings made a world of difference. It shows that it's a luck of the draw thing, but if your trackballs are harsh and gritty feeling, replace the bearings with anything. But I can tell you that subjectively these silicon nitride bearings are at least 50% smoother and glide more freely than the zirconium ones. Probably it's because silicon ceramic balls are just more slippery than zirconium.

I replaced the 3 bearings from my Kensington expert mouse with the bearings you recommended and I also put 1 drop of pure silicon oil on each bearing. Works better than when it was new.
    Thanks so much.

Thanks for the video! I bought a set of the silicon nitride bearings for my Expert Mouse Wireless. That alone made a significant difference. A dab of silicon oil on each one and it's even smoother now. Almost no resistance with the trackball, this made a massive difference.

Any plans to discuss fountain pens again? I loved your reviews. Enjoy the DC Show if you are attending.

Going to try this. Right out of my slimblade is terrible. Doesn’t roll good no matter what I do to it. And it squeaks. Was going to send back but may try this first.

I just got the slimblade and I like everything except the static friction (from static to small slow movement), it's a jerky mess at small movements from static, no matter how i lube it. Not sure if this is how it is or if I got a lemon.

@@davidcauley9400 the ball is heavy and there is also a cutoff. If you move it really slow the sensor does not detect the movement at all. I assume it was implemented intentionally to remove the jitter. I was trackman marble user for many years and noticed what you are writing about too.

@@Advadva thanks for replying. Oddly the issue has basically gone after a few days usage, so i guess it just needed time to wear in. I also used a Marble about ten years ago and always liked it, but I'm really starting to enjoy the Slimblade now the sticking issue has nearly gone. I have RSI so I think the flat presentation means I am not constantly gripping my hand and that seems to be a big plus for pain. It definitely could use a palm rest though, and lighter quiter buttons. I rather like the scrolling too, once you learn the required dexterity.

@@davidcauley9400 I'm still trying to figure out what affects smoothness of slimblade. I tried ball polishing and bearings replacement. Black ceramics, white ceramics and POM. The ruby ones are indeed breaking in after some time. Those made of ceramics are a bit better but not as a day and night. It could be that the ball doesn't have to be perfect. The smoother it is, the more static friction appears. Different lubricants such as recommended somewhere lanolin attracts dust.

@@Advadva i have to admit I'm pretty darn happy with mine now, happy enough that I am not rushing to try other bearings yet anyway. Ive pretty much found that after a few days wearing in and the advice to rub the ball on your forehead does the trick, along with a quick bearing wipe with a finger to remove debris ehen it starts to lost smoothness. I'd like it even smoither, but its just fine now. Interesting what you say aboyt tge static friction/smoothness. I'm not have a big SF issue now and can confortablly do selecting and highlighting text accurately.

This is true but at least we know the proper stance.
