Just in case folks don't notice, most choirs sing, "Let us live to make men free"...except any choir affiliated with the armed force, who sing, "Let us DIE to make make free."

Like Marni, I too sang with the NYC All City Chorus. We rehearsed for weeks every Saturday and I can assure you that Dr. Wilhousky was a great conductor.

We sang this in (Osage, IA) high school chorus and the director was fantastic. The arrangement, tonality, tempo, changes in volume among other aspects seem to be the same from what I can remember. It was in the early to mid 60s. If I say so myself, our chorus was pretty darn good and I wish I had a recording of us. Needless to say, this Portland choir is super good.

Hi all. Wow. At my advanced age, I realized what a privilege it was to be part of the N.Y. C All City Chorus -- directed by Peter J. Wilhausky himself. Of course we ended with "The Battle Hymn" which we sang with the All City Band accompanying. :) I must say that in listening to many versions, it wasn't quite the way he directed it:) As I recall, he was a bit less dramatic re: speed. that must have been amazing! Just curious how he was as a conductor? Did he rehearse you or just step in at the performance?

When I would sing this piece with the Saginaw Valley Chorale, the conductor would always call on me to sing the lead in the make quartet section.

nice performance ! great musicians, but it has an interesting contrast of interpretations with the Army Band & Choir. Both are fantastic !

It is not "let us live to make men free" it is "let us die to make men free". We must die to ourself, accept Christ so that He can do a work in us and through Him, lead others to salvation. In our flesh, we are like filthy rags.

    • @wesleyjaskulsky9414

'Let us die to make men free' is the official and original term to use but changed at a certain time to make it less unhappy sounding or something like that i suppose don't know the exact reason.

@@wesleyjaskulsky9414 I like to watch various bands do this song. Surprisingly, many Christians singers do not use the words of the original song lyrics. John 3:3

@@wesleyjaskulsky9414 This is just my guess, but it seems to me that the origninal "let us die" refers to the deadly struggle of the American Civil War, and likely was replaced by "let us live" about a hundred years later during the Civil Rights Era to ackowledge the need for committed Americans to live and work for much-deferred justice and equality.
