  • After a hard fought race, it was BYU's Conner Mantz who took home the individual title at the men's NCAA cross country championship with a time of 29:26.1. Mantz became the first American to win the individual title since Oregon's Galen Rupp in 2008. Meanwhile, Northern Arizona won the team title, giving them four NCAA cross country championships in the last 5 seasons.

    NAU’s coach Mike Smith is a MASTER MIND of a coach and a genius strategist.
    First, outstanding performance by Grijalva ! !having to change strategy from a Track & Field mentality to a 10k Cross Country race & then place Top 10 is short from incredible.
    After Grijalva’s ability to lead, pace, and set the rhythm for the pack through the first part of the race, the NAU team then grinds together until the smoke is fully cleared.
    This then opens it up for Nico Young, Abdlhamid Nur, Ferro to lead the pace for the pack right into a top 10, finish for all four runners including Grijalva. The remaining of the NAU team pulls impressive runs for the caliber of this race.
    Mike Smith = Master Mind. This shows that there’s levels to the sport of cross country. Great job NAU

These guys run so many miles and are in incredible shape. Sometimes when these guys double or triple in track, their better race is the second or third one. I did run at NCAA D1 level, but certainly not amongst the top like these guys. Even for me sometimes my second race of a double would be the better one. My conclusion is that Conner Mantz is the fastest collegiate runner at the 10k distance. He ran a fantastic race strategically, he was the most prepared, and it was his day. All-American Brandon Garnica ran aside Clinger up until the final kilometer before heat exhaustion caused him to be pulled from the race.
      “Brandon had a little heat exhaustion problem with about 500 meters to go and went down,” Eyestone said. “He was running in a good position at the time. At that point in the race, the chance to win the title had already slipped away with NAU in a stronger position than anyone could handle. As an Australian, I still can't understand how this team thing plays into it all. I can vaguely understand the scoring, but who cares if the team runs altogether? Wouldn't you want a bunch of studs that can possibly win races? Tactically speaking, why would you want your fastest guys to slow down to run in a pack? Surely morale / wind resistance isn't that big of a deal. Love the sport, just can't understand that and hope someone can spell it out to me! Cheers :)

    • @BenDoesSomeStuff
      @BenDoesSomeStuff 3 роки тому +3

      maybe i can help a little bit. not many teams are like NAU where they have 4 in the top 10, so when you have a team that has one really really fast dude, you may want to work together as a team and come in together all at once. that’s why notre dame was able to scare NAU just a tad. They don’t have a crazy fast runner like Connor Mantz, but a lot of pretty fast runners that were able to work together. there’s also the possibility that you blow up because the pace is way too quick like the hofstra runner. if your fastest guy drops 10-20 spots where he’s supposed to be it makes winning a title a lot harder
