How to Throw MID RANGE - Disc Golf

  • In my opinion, the most under-appreciated mold in disc golf is the mid range. Usually, disc golfers either LOVE mid ranges and bag 5 of them, or don't throw any at all. Well, in this video, I'm going to show you the nuances of how to throw mid range - disc golf, and WHY it is one of the best, most consistent shots in your bag.
    (And it goes pretty far as well 😉)

    Been struggling with my release for a long time. Finished work, watched this over dinner then went straight out and put your advice into action with my mako3 and buzzz and dude, the difference is amazing. Thanks Ben, each one of your videos I've watched have made a noticeable difference to the efficency of my practice and the quality of my throws.
    Once again thanks a million, you have a great way of making things make sense in a way that the other experienced players on the course haven't been able to get me to understand. Looking forward to more videos!

    I think you're generally right, but I'll critique your physics.
    MR and DVR discs get their spin during the same duration of the release. Since the MR's rim is smaller, the distance from your pinchpoint to the center of mass is greater, resulting in a greater distance it needs to rotate around the pinchpoint in the same time as the drv. Because the MR needs to rotate further, in the same time, the disc needs to be rotating faster, causing more spin once you release.
    Its not the radius from the pinchpoint to the edge of the disc that matters as much as the pinchpoint to the center of mass.

    • @snikwahjets

      Total agree with your tether ball analogy explanation. Saved me from writing the exact comment.
      A better analogy would be to compare holding a tennis racket at the end of its handle (MR) or middle of handle (driver)
      Having a smaller rim would allow you to get more outside edge speed, and therefore spin, for the "same" amount of wrist moment.
      If you have a weak wrist the driver might actually be "easier" to get rotating due to having a shorter center of mass to rotate

      It's also important to note the difference is much more trivial between a midrange or a driver compared to what the weight of the disc is. If you want to throw farther, put more spin on the disc, and pull through faster....get a lighter disc, because there are scenarios that you'll want to use a fairway or driver instead of a midrange, and vice versa.

    Sick video! Throwing the back end of the disc at the target is an interesting concept. I feel like that's why I tend to "griplock" because I am thinking about the front end to the target. I will have to try this on my next round. Midranges are my favorite discs in my bag beside my sidewinder. Gator3, Buzzz, Buzzz SS, Meteor are my go-tos!

      I started with a shark, and quicky expanded to using big z buzz, big z meteor, and for laser straight shots, I use a fuse. So far, they have been great tools for fade, turn, and straight shots, plus the discraft mids are easy to throw forehand. I still have a lot of experience to gain, but I play every day, so I have learned a lot so far. Quite a challenging and addictive sport that gives you loud and concise feedback with every result.

    I love throwing midranges! So much more control, and on days when I’m not feeling it with my drivers I like to lean on my midranges. My favorites to throw right now are the Wasp, Buzzz (in crystal sparkle since I just can’t get myself to trust the ESP yet), and the Discmania Origin. I find that even though the Origin and Buzzz have similar flight ratings that their flights are different with the Origin being more under-stable. I feel like these 3 discs cover 99% of my midrange shots for my game from 250’ and in. I really enjoyed your video!

    I'm new and only 3 weeks in. I'm not fast enough to throw anything higher than a 7. My main plays are a fairway driver, to a mid, then I worry about my approaching. This makes the most sense and has been what has allowed me to par more often than not. Mids are the most versatile discs, specifically due to their low speed and ability to hold angles during those slow speeds. I can't imagine how mundane and limited a game would be not having the ability to shape my shots on a wooded course.

    On the index finger, does the rim seat into the crease of the first knuckle/joint? This is most natural for me. If I deep seat the disc in my hand the pinch point is more the fleshy area between 1st and second knuckles. I throw decently either way. Is there a more correct way. The pivot seems more pronounced in the crease of the knuckle but sometimes wonder if that interferes some with ejection. Thoughts?

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  2 роки тому

      The way that I do it, is the pad of my pointer finger and the joint right behind it make almost a 90 degree angle, so that the real point that I'm pinching is the bottom most point of the rim of the disc. This helps me get all of the real "squeeze" onto the nose or the rim of the disc, and then the fingers that fold in behind it really just support the flight plate to help with angle control. I would think that having it deep in your hand looses some of the snap, as if you're sliding the disc further down the tip of the whip in that analogy, but it's really up to you and whatever works best for you, go with it!

    I agree with most of your stuff, but I respectfully disagree with the midrange pinch point. Most midranges are a slightly bigger circumference than drivers (why they can max weigh 180 g). You need more spin on them than drivers. Throw midranges better you will throw drivers better. Look at ultimate players playing disc golf. They get crazy spin on their dinner plates of disc

    Ben, I did not really track the first 2/3 of this video. I am not sure the rather all analogy worked. You realize that you made a video about throwing disc but only threw one disk at the end? Supporting the whole disk made sense.

    That idea of "spinning the back of the disc towards the target" is really helpful. All the physics stuff and midranges-get-more-spin-theory is not...

    Innova probably need a UA-camr like Ben. Their pros don’t really contribute anything like this, unlike other companies, like Discraft with Brodie, Uli, Paige and Paul, Discmania with Simon and Eagle, and Trilogy with all their content from DD and Latitude64. And obviously Prodigy have Thomas, who sneaks into every other video.

    why wouldn't the measurement be to the center of the disc (center of mass)? the center of the disc is whipping around, so it's not twice as far, it's only a little. There's probably more in throwing technique that has an effect on spin.

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  2 роки тому

      This is a good question and one that I thought about, and the reason I put it this way is because practically, when you put spin on the disc, you're spinning it around the rim of the disc at the pinching point you've made with your fingers. After it leaves your hand it'll stabilizes and spins around the middle, but when instructing, I focused on the rim of the disc because that's the part your hand has control over. Thanks for your insight!!

    How does this theory affect people that use a fangrip on midranges instead of a powergrip?

    • @aaronmayhew2.0
      @aaronmayhew2.0 2 роки тому

      I only throw mids and putters with a fan grip. I just recently added a couple fairway drivers to force power grip. I see some field work in my future. Trying the grip feels awkward.

    • @Beaglefaust
      @Beaglefaust 2 роки тому +2

      I think the power grip only works well with drivers. Obviously hands are all different. But if I try to power grip a putter or mid, I get either a solid pinch/fan grip or an unstable power grip where the disc flops around if I move my hand up and down.

      I started playing in the 1990s. So there were no wide-rimmed drivers. When I would go to grip a, say, Innova Cobra (a mid before any discs were called mids), I could "power grip" easily with my index finger. But my ring and middle fingers, being longer, had to be unnaturally forced into the rim position. So just because it felt solid, I used a pinch grip (some people call it fan, but to me that's with fingers close to fully extended) with those fingers. A pinch grip to me is where fingers are nestled on the underside of the flight plate as close to the rim as they can be short of forcing an unnatural power grip and losing control, by causing a wobbly hold.
      Compare to any 10 speed or above where it's not only easy but a good idea to power grip with every finger (unless you have huge hands). Scott Stokely pinch grips drivers. He's like 6'7" or something. BTW, I only started throwing these wide-rimmed drivers two years ago because I quit DG for a long time thanks to tendonitis from shooting basketballs. So I had to figure this out recently.
      I think he's saying a power grip with the index finger is a pinch point of control, or "the tip of the whip" allowing you to get more spin. IOW, literal pinch, not the grip. Which is true, but like so many terms and concepts in disc golf can lead to confusion because the pinch grip is a thing some teachers say. While to others the exact same grip is a fan. Hope that didn't make the confusion worse.😆

    Your 'physics' seems messed up.
    Can you show the equations that back up your claim that it's twice as hard to generate spin on a 20mm rim vs a 10mm rim?
    What you're saying is that it takes twice the effort to spin a driver compared to something smaller. From my experience I'd bet not.
    The way you phrase it any putter would have many times the spin rate of my 14 speed drivers. That's just not how it plays out.
