  • Paul McCartney recently uncovered photographs he'd thought were lost - ones he took during The Beatles' first tour of America in 1964. The pictures - candid shots from the vantage point of newly-anointed superstars - are the basis of the book, "1964: Eyes of the Storm," and an exhibition currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum. Correspondent Anthony Mason gets a private tour with McCartney, who talks about documenting the astonishing welcome that the "lads from Liverpool" received in the U.S. (An earlier version of this story was broadcast on June 18, 2023.)

    This is great! Paul didn’t make his living taking snapshots, but like every good photographer, he’s an *artist* who knows what moments to capture and how to go about it! 📷

    The audio is really off in this - because of the Beatles audio?

    Wow. CBS publishing split track audio, un-mixed, with no music.

      I can't remember from when this was first uploaded, but maybe the original used clips of Beatles songs and they got swatted down by UA-cam?

    • @StephenMann
      @StephenMann 3 місяці тому

      @@fustigate314159 That’s a good observation. They may have run into UA-cam’s copyright bots. But, I’d hope that the network would at least do a remedial mix on the audio before publishing - even without the music.

    • @fustigate314159
      @fustigate314159 2 місяці тому +1

      @@StephenMann, right, you'd think if they were going to repost it several weeks later (instead of just totally dropping it), they'd spend a bit more time on the mix.
      It seems a bit unlikely to me that in the original, Paul McCartney was panned fully left and Anthony Mason was fully panned right. Sooo... this isn't just the original with track for the Beatles clips dropped.

    I bought the book a while back. At first some of the photos seemed unimpressive, but then I realized that the Beatles didn't have their "posing faces" on. This was them being themselves, so it's a chance to see them being ordinary. That picture at 1:34 is really delightful, capturing one female fan's recognition. After seeing so many pictures of them during their first U.S. visit, it's interesting to see the view from the opposite side, especially taking pictures of the pro photographers.

    slightly off topic but does anyone know for a fact what the state of the beatles catalog ownership is? there's been decades of controversy and paul trying to win back the rights ever since MJ bought the catalog in 1985. A few things i saw in my research: 1// MJ owned the beatles catalogue until 1995 when he sold 50% to sony for 100 million$. then MJ's estate sold the other half to sony for $750 million in 2016. 2// there is a 1976 law that says music goes back to its songwriter after 2 separate 28 year periods, so in paul's case he should have regained control of some of beatles music in 2018 which is why he sued sony in 2017 which they settled but its a secret what the arrangement is and is supposed to regain control of the rest of beatles songs in 2026. 3// lennon's 25% ownership in the beatles catalog was sold to sony by yoko and will stay in sony's possession until 2050, 70 years after lennon's death then it goes back to john's estate.
    can anyone confirm or clarify any of this information? something doesnt add up, and its alot of legal mumbo jumbo.
