Let me know in the comments what kinds of cool events or small details that I missed on my no guide playthrough! I definitely only scratched the surface of what this game has to offer.
Wish there were more Nikki content creators. When you're finished with this game, you can check Yume 2kki if you want; it's a fan sequel to this game, and it focuses a lot more on exploration than Nikki. It is a collaborative project, so there's tons of different takes on the same game.
you will probably need to use a guide if you want to find where all of the cool events are because of how obscure they are. Also, if you want to play more games like this, I'd recommend you play some of the fan-made sequels to yume nikki like yume 2kki
This really reminds me so much of the first time I played this game, especially the beginning! It actually struck a really sentimental chord with me, as I was that kid who'd scrounge the online web for games to play on Game Jolt, New Grounds, and where I found Yume Nikki, Steam. I missed many things like you on my first real playthrough (I had briefly played before thinking it was only a shitty boring stock game since I had only explored the surfaces of the Foreat, Snow, and Puddle World). So glad I gave it a second chance though, and my second time playing was filled with shenanigans, messing around and giving my own context and meaning to this very open-ended and highly-interpretational game. I actually played the game until I had 21 effects without the use of a guide, but certain effects like the Witch and Nopperabou Ghost being near impossible to find without a guide forced me to use one. I was certain I had found everything (50+ hours playtime...), but after using a guide and getting the ending... I was extremely disappointed. Now that I'm (at the very least a little bit) older and can appreciate the ending with a greater understanding and open mind rather than when I only looked at it at face-value, it really wasn't so bad. Similar to the decision the director made in the movie 'The Mist', giving it a painful "bad" ending that too also angered me, but I've now come to understand and love for it's genuis. Thank you for putting together such a beautifully sincere video. You captured exactly what it was like for me playing this game (albeit a bit more exagerrated and not as slow as how my 13 year old brain was when I first began my impending obsession).
9:31 really convinced me that Monoe is the only other instance of an actual npc full screen jumpscare in the whole game (besides Takofussen, the balloon guy that sometimes appears in White Desert)
I seen the doors at the beginning and immediately thought of this one manga i randomly read… which was yume nikki… lol, didn’t know there was a game of it.

Glad you enjoy it :-)

The manga was made after the success of the game. From what I’ve heard, the manga is not very popular
maybe im wrong but it feels like you are only pretending that youve never played before
