  • West Virginia University (WVU) football's recruiting success is particularly impressive given the state's limited pool of high school football talent. Unlike powerhouse programs in states like Texas, Florida, or California, which boast a wealth of elite prospects, WVU faces the unique challenge of recruiting from a state with a smaller population and fewer top-tier recruits. Despite these constraints, the Mountaineers have managed to build competitive teams, thanks to a combination of strategic recruiting efforts, a strong football culture, and the ability to attract out-of-state talent.
    Strategic Recruiting Efforts
WVU’s coaching staff excels in identifying and targeting talent beyond the state borders. They have developed robust recruiting pipelines in neighboring states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia, and extended their reach to football-rich regions in the Southeast and Midwest. This strategic approach allows them to tap into larger talent pools and compete for recruits who can elevate the program's performance.
    Strong Football Culture
West Virginia’s passionate football culture plays a crucial role in attracting recruits. The Mountaineers’ storied history, including numerous bowl appearances and conference championships, resonates with young athletes looking for a program with a tradition of success. The fan base's unwavering support creates an electric game-day atmosphere at Mountaineer Field, which is a significant draw for recruits seeking a vibrant college football experience.
    Attractive Development Opportunities
WVU offers recruits a compelling package of development opportunities. The program's commitment to player development, both on and off the field, is evident through its investment in top-notch facilities, experienced coaching staff, and comprehensive support systems. Recruits are drawn to WVU’s ability to develop talent and provide a pathway to the NFL, as evidenced by the program’s history of producing professional players.
    Overcoming Challenges
Overcoming the challenge of a limited in-state talent pool requires resilience and adaptability. WVU's recruiting success demonstrates the staff’s ability to build relationships, sell the program’s strengths, and effectively communicate the opportunities available at West Virginia. This resilience ensures that the Mountaineers remain competitive in the Big 12 and nationally.
    Conclusion
In summary, West Virginia University football's impressive recruiting success, despite the challenge of a limited in-state talent pool, underscores the program's strategic acumen, strong football culture, and commitment to player development. These factors enable WVU to consistently attract and develop talent from across the country, maintaining the Mountaineers’ status as a formidable force in college football.

Disagree that it's the worst job recruiting wise, the WVU recruiting is about 5 to 6 hours out..there are several major cities within the radius. CORRECT, the state isn't stacked with talent....but the school doesn't have the winning history it does without having SOME clout in those east coast and midwest cities. WVU is known well enough to be a location where kids can play, have good facilities, national exposure and make it to the NFL. Check this past calendar years baseball, football, women's basketball, men's and women's soccer ....basketball is on way back...we get recruits, and it does not have to be in state.

You guys need to do your research/homework when it comes to WVU’s NIL fund. It is SO much better and much improved over the past 2 or 3 seasons like another WVU fan pointed out. West Virginia has ALWYS made a living recruiting FL, Ohio, PA, NC and recently GA for their players.

We ( West Virginia) only have 1.5 million residents, which reflects the lack of HS prospects...You are correct, it is a miracle or maybe it's that West Virginia is a special place with special people, easy to make fun of and stereotype, but when a person experiences our "culture" often they get hooked and love it.

Yet Martinsburg HS is somehow able to beat the top ranked teams in VA year in and year out? Hudson Clement is prime example scoring 8 TD’s (4 receiving/4 rushing) in the State Championship game and wasn’t offered by any D-1 schools including WVU. What did he do, he went out and earned his scholarship as a preferred walk-on last year! The simple fact is, recruits in WV are under evaluated by these so called scouting experts.

Considering the trash can that Brown inherited and how long it was going to take him to rebuild a completely depleted roster and the results on the field werent great the first few years, Brown & staff have actually recruited quite well. Now results are showing on the field, Ive noticed recruiting this year is on a different level. We dont get a lot of 4 stars, but when you closely analyze 3 star players, theres a very fine line difference(usually) between a 85.00 recruit and a 87.00-89.00 recruit. This year we have a lot of 87-89 players that are "warm" and have taken an official visit.
Brown inherited one of the least talented rosters thats been in Morgantown since before Don Nehlen, compounding that they was also one of the youngest rosters in all of D1. The formula at WVU has always been leaning heavily on quality evaluations, development, and upperclassmen heavy rosters. Have a great strength & conditioning program with Mike Joseph, one of the best S&C coaches in the country, and be patient to allow a recruit time to develop, so he can produce at a high level in his Jun & Sen years. Brown wasnt given that luxury when he took the job, as he had to play a lot of true freshmen, RSFresh, & soph the first 3 years.
Now our NIL collective is in a good spot, all of our facilities have just recently been upgraded(on par with the best in the country now), and results on the field are good, I think a realistic ceiling for WVU in recruiting rankings would be in th 18-24 range after another good season, or two, I could see this staff consistently recruiting in that range. Though, I think WVU can be successful with a quality development & evaluation program recruiting in the 26-32 range, as long as we can retain the players we invest in to realize their productivity in their best years(Jun & Sen seasons).
Brown has a lot of structures in place that maximize player development, like in their RS fresh year, they get more S&C work in through the entire season, they also have scrimmages for the development players in addition to regular practices.
Recruiting in WV has improved some lately. While we dont see massive numbers, there are a few good players in the state each year. Zach Frazier, Doug Nester, Wyatt Milum, Nick Malone, Bausley(All quality OL) Sean Martin(DL), and the last couple years its been WRs & DBs with Clement brothers, Fox, Dues, Robinson, Collins, Price(RB), Biser Brothers & Jones(LBs) And a bunch of quality walk ons. So the last few years theres been about 15-16 or so scholarship players from WV, another 10 or so walk ons. Considering the state's size, thats a decent number of D1 level players from such a small state.
That said, recruiting strategy has always been draw a 4 hour drive circle around Morgantown and recruit those areas hard. WV, VA, Maryland, PA, OH, NJ, DC area, then go to Florida for more speedy players for WRs, DBs, RBs
The underlying formula for success at WVU has always been dual threat QB, with elite speed & shiftiness at skillset positions, upperclassmen heavy for OL & DL, combined with creative schemes & hard nosed blue collar mentalities. Every period historically when WVU has been competitive at a high level we always had a dual threat QB, elite speed, creative schemes. We finally found our way back to that formula, and fingers crossed Brown's staff dont get sucked back into their old ways of recruiting statues at QB. Im hoping Greene has opened their eyes, along with what other non blue bloods have accomplished. Kansas, Lousiville, Cincy(when they played in CFP), the formula for a non blue blood to compete is simple. You can beat traditional 5 star size & strength body types with elite speed & shiftiness. You make that your brand of football and kids with those skillsets will see systems are designed for them to be successful. Brown & company has done a fantastic job at WR & RB the last 2 years with speed & shiftiness, we just need to find our next Greene that will take the reigns after Nicco's era is over. Nicco has good enough mobility to be a run threat, but hes not quite what I would consider a true dual threat. More like a traditional pocket passer with a high level of mobility & pocket awareness. Good enough where defenses have to respect on RPOs, but the offense will have to be adapted for him a bit after this year. We got a transfer QB this year from BYU thats hopeful, but Greene was not only a dual threat but also an Elite 11 QB. So, im hoping our 2025 QB commit is more aligned with Greene's skillset level. From what Ive heard, we've had some of those QB types visit camps recently. So fingers crossed we continue down that pathway, because the formula for success at a program like WVU has been written & known for a long time now. Just took this staff a little time to accept it. That said, WVU fans are also excited for Nicco's era too. We will lose a few OL after this year, so we will need to find 1-2 in the portal, but Moore has built quality depth in the OL room, so we do have talent in behind our first group, their just a bit inexperienced. Perhaps Moore finds a way to get them some live reps this year in 4th qtrs when the game is locked, tho as tough as our schedule is this year, not to many games will we not be pushed to the last possession.
We have both the talent & experience this year to make it to Dallas, despite a brutal schedule, if we remain healthy and a few bounces go our way, we just may shock a few people this year. Patience is a virtue for a reason, and considering the deviated situation Brown inherited, portal, covid, nil, it took a little longer to get us positioned again, but I think this could be a new Chapter for the Neal Brown era in Morgantown. He has everything you want in a HC, just hope he doesnt get sucked back into his old air raid ways with pocket passing statues behind center.

WVU will never be a top FB school. Especially with NB coach. WVU will always be in the mid, lower half of the B12 if they don’t kick them out. NIL just another excuse for being mediocre or worse for WVU. Except for RR years they are just another mid level college FB team. The ADM is happy with that 6-6 , 7-5 , 5-7 teams and a low level bowl each year. When the planets and sun aline right might get 8-9 win season but never consistent with that type of winning. However, always next year,

How WVU does it now is an easy, two word answer: Neal Brown. He treats people right and understand both the technical side of football and the "life" side. He's assembled a staff who believes the same things, and they find players who believe it as well. There are guys out there who want that family atmosphere, who will take less money for a better place, who understand they may have to work and wait...like Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol. Coach Brown had to start on the far side of zero when building a strong culture, but he's done it, and the players/recruits feel it, love it. Such things don't matter for everyone, and the coaches don't try to get those guys. (And it also helps to have Drew Fabianich.)

This 100% . Not sure how so many WVU cannot comprehend this buts its a fact. The Brown hate I couldnt understand when it was easy to see that he had to rebuild with a different mindset and complete understanding that WVU has to go about this a different way and the NIL only made it that much more difficult. Unfortunately many fans will still insist that WVU is just as attractive as top tier schools and the only problem with recruiting is coaching. Theres a reason why we could never land or keep big time coaches, main reason being how difficult of a job it is. I still have faith in Brown 100%

Although it came out of necessity, at WVU every single recruit/player just means more. WVU has built a very successful program with that culture. All their tools, methods and resources strongly support that culture. It will always be a winning formula and maybe more so now, despite NIL dollar differences, to attract, develop and retain those very special, winning, highly talented, team-oriented, strong leadership, no off-field issues, NFL- ready, type players. What about those programs in talent rich states? How much is each recruit and player valued? What about programs that start to rely on their NIL? What vital steps of a recruit's development will they start to miss? Will those programs not waste resources when new recruits show threads of discontent so early? Will those programs have trouble developing team culture, brotherhood, camaraderie? It was already happening before NIL. One thing is for sure . . . college football is fucking awesome.
