They stuck extra frets in their guitars to get microtonal notes, which are notes in between the notes allowed by the Western 12-TET system. The album this comes from, Flying Microtonal Banana (named for the yellow guitar Ambrose is holding), is heavily influenced by Turkish folk music (because of course it is) and specifically an instrument called a Baglama-Saz, which has moveable frets made of fishing line. These extra frets were inserted into their guitars, and their keyboards modified, to be able to play the notes accessible on the Baglama, or as the band called them, "Secret Notes". Thats part of the sound of this song - since these are notes in between notes, they're out of tune sounding at first, but they're out of tune with each other in that they harmonize still but they're jsut different than the western ear is used to. Instead of having semi-tones as the smallest interval, you have quarter tones as the smallest interval.
Dude, so their 3 microtonal albums are in a category of their own. Great stuff and so many more great songs. I’ll recommend one song per album: Nuclear Fusion, Minimum Brain Size, and Pleura.
nice shirt 👍- I was also intrigued by their frets. From what I can gather, they like to explore microtonal music. "To play microtones, most of the band members had their instruments modified. These mods include adding extra frets to guitars and basses, re-pitching vintage keyboards, and even altering a harmonica"
Here for the foray into Gizz! Legit my fav band of recent times, and it's never a dull time being a Gizz fan. Whether it's new releases, new live material, even just clips of live shows that people put up, there's always something going on in the world of KGLW!
honestly if you’re getting into king gizzard you’re on the right path with their kexp sessions - they’re easily some of their best live performances ever. i would encourage you to check out the muddy water and ice v sessions, theyre two of my personal favourites (but any will do)
Back when they had 2 drummers, Eric left the band in 2020, he was bands manager and didnt usually record drums in the studio he was more of the second drummer during live shows.
Every instrument in this video (drums included) is microtonal. They added extra frets to their guitars and bass, modified their synth, and altered their harmonica to play notes that are halfway between one note and another. For example, between a G and a G sharp is a G half sharp. The song Open Water features some of the most jarring microtones on the album Flying Microtonal Banana (including G half sharp) but I think you should save that song for a full album listen if you ever do one (on camera or not). I'd like a reaction to the I'm In Your Mind medley, live on KEXP. Last thing, did you notice they have 2 drummers? From 2013 up until 2021, they had a 2nd drummer.

They re fretted the guitars to play microtones. That whole album and 2 others are based in microtonal music
That's a microtonal guitar (the one with the bazillion frets)
"Magma" live @ KEXP is a great jam. I think you would appreciate that one.
I concur

MAGMA. MAGMA. MAGMA
Whenever u hear a sound that doesnt quite exist and you need to build the instrument. Jesus that's badass!

Check out their songs Oddlife/Doom city live at Red Rocks for some killer microtonal hard rock.

The drums being microtonal was a joke, it isn't actually
@@kirimanagi1013 I know, I should've made that more clear. Drums don't play notes.
I’m totally down for more live reactions of KGLW
bro didnt realize he wasn't listening to music not restricted to an 8 note octave 🧿
Their three microtonal albums may be my favorites or at least way up there. FLYING MICROTONAL BANANA, K.G., L.W.
LW ends the way KG begins.
their KEXP doom city is a piece of audio heaven
Oh boy, here we go into the microtonal wormhole. Prepare yourself to become a turk in the next few months
check the album microtonal banana, from them ;-)
