The who and the small faces where lip sinking and I didn't l in like the variations. The rest was good and Booker T And The Mgs killed it, stand out in my opinion.
This is great to watch and tho I only watched part of it, thought I should comment and watch the rest later.
Back in 1965/66. I was the Small Faces 1st road manager (driver humper) picked up an old van from Jimmy Winstone's dads pub, swapped it out for a brand new one at a used car dealership???? Drove London to Birmingham for my first gig, I did not have a clue how to wire up the gear and the lads showed me, Kenny Jones assembled his drum kit.
A week or so later the organist swapped out for Ian Maclagan and his Hammond organ and Lesley speaker, the van was now full, then Kenny decided he needed a second base drum. Thats where I had to get creative and make the rear speaker panels easily removable to store mikes cables, etc. To get the extra drum in.
The Small Faces had little control of the first batch of records that were released, but their stage show made them very popular, lots of James Brown and Steve's voice made for a great group, Ian's Hammond had that deep sound and coupled with the Lesley was great. Kenny had a review from the Joe Loss band drummer that his playing style was a very technical and not the bang and crash of other drummers of the time.
The year I worked for them was hard doing TV appearances during the day and club dates in the evenings plus driving long distances between the next day's gigs. But then having a ringside view each night to their great music, was great. Thanks for reminding me off those times on my 79th Birthday TODAY.

Astonishing that there was ever a time in popular music that you could see such fantastic bands all in ONE show! And cool haircuts and clothes and good dancing....There is absolutely nothing to match this nowadays. and great to see Pete and Keith from The Who sitting righting behind the Small Faces, dancing away, really in it, supporting their friends. What an era this was!
As much as I love both bands, seeing them lip sync along to a recording makes it something less then astonishing in my book.
Right, it was great! Trouble is we’re now in our 70s!

That is without doubt the best footage I have ever seen of Booker T and the MGs, god those guys rocked.
Man, I've just seen the first 12 minutes of this, and even 50 plus years later, the 60s seem so far out and other worldly. And "I Can See For Miles" is still one of the most ferocious, other worldly rock songs. Then that's followed up with the Small Faces "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake". A real other worldly, rock revolution. Staggering music.

This is awesome. I still remember the old days and Rock N Roll, Rhythm N Blues, Boogie N Woogie Blues and good old ass kickin rockin music. When I Wake Up and crawl out of bed I'm still playing the Rockin Blues. I never listened to UA-cam until 2 years ago. I always played my technics stereo equipment with six feet tall speakers and I have thousands of old vinyl albums in great shape. I'm old and I can't get enough so play it loud for me.
The Who, Small Faces, Booker T and the MGs.... Paris 1968. That must have been a magical time.
From 1962 to 1974 was a magical time for music. Glad I lived it.

Who even cares if some of this isn't live? This 1968 in full colour showing exactly what its all about! Keith moon and Pete Townshend going mad sitting by the side of the stage while steve marriot throws his guitar around inches from them. Rock and roll history! the people, the clothes, everything. I'm 22 and im just happy i've been able to see this. Get in man!

I don’t understand why they couldn’t play live back then. I just cringed when Steve Marriott didn’t even have his guitar strapped on yet but you could hear him “playing.”

I disagree. Whether it's 1968 or 2023, if a band appears on stage then they should be playing live and if they dont then they're conning the audience. The irony is The Who and The Small Faces were two of the best live bands around.
@@ViN-kr3ri Stuart here. Couldn't agree more. I'm 65 and was only 10 in 68, but I was already a Cream, Doors and Bubble Puppy fan, among others. But even at 10, I would have caught the fake playing and lip synching.
For me ,this is the absolute best footage of the 60s, I had seen the WHO and Small faces in this year 68, add the Pink Floyd ,thank you France for keeping it live!

Agreed. Methinks however, Duck replaced his bass parts, cause there's some spots where he's going crazy and what's comin out of the speakers is, well... different. I'm guessin the bass was poorly recorded and unsalvageable.

@@willbee7925 only the first two bands. I gather that this was a X-mas show filmed mostly in a big film or TV studio and the French TV producers by then already favoured mimed perfos. I think it was down to cost and not paying engineers. also this trend carries through to the seventies when THE CLASH played live on TV for the first time, they were told to bring their PUNK volume down to 2. Pathetic. (I'm reading about the show now and how TRAFFIC was stopped by French customs (presumably) and could not attend day three of the show so a band called THE VARIATION with 16 years old Tobaly on guitar walked in to join the party with all their equipment in the van nearby. The producer approached them, waiting for TRAFFIC caught in traffic and offered them the slot. Peter Green s band blew my top. never really heard F Mac b4. Great outfit.

The absolute best Sixties music I've heard in ages.
I love Moon's discombobulated drumming technique. He was the perfect compliment to Townsend's own crazed gesticulations and frenzied bashing about the stage. These two were about as far away from "by the book" as you can get. I listened to Tommy for the first time in many years a few days ago and reveled again in the glorious power of that classic creation. The power and the glory.

I was lucky enough to be 19yrs old 🧓 in 68, and saw all of the bands playing today's Gig live in Leicester GB, Booker T
was brilliant instrumentally made you want to dance magical memories thanks.
Take me back in the time machine!. I was a high school sophomore, and 6 thousand miles away when these gigs were played. Saw some of these Bands in concert a few years later.

I clicked on this video to watch The Who but was really floored by watching Joe Cocker‘s performance at 1:15:27. So true to the way he performed it less than a year later at Woodstock. (UA-cam) The closest thing we may ever have to a time machine.
Why does it appear that Chris Stainton (usually Joe's keyboardist) is playing bass?

Yes,this really rocks and a big big important slice of British rock history! Kenny Jones later joined the the Who as a replacement for Keith Moon. The Small Faces later became the Faces with Rod Stewart and Ron Wood. Steve Marriott later formed Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. The Small Faces had recently had their big hit "Itchycoo Park". In August 1969 The Who appeared at Woodstock. Also included here are Booker T. & The M.G. s , Pink Floyd, Joe Cocker, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, The Troggs, The Equals , The Variations

I discovered the Small Faces while watching exerpts from that video (New Year 1968) 10 years ago on YT ... The fact that the Who were enjoying the music played by the Small Faces was a hint ... what a gem, and what a shame the world doesn't know enough about the Small Faces! Ever since, when I meet people who like rock, even dj's, I tell them to check out the Small Faces.

The Variations was a french band.They had a little succes in the late 60's and disbanded in the early 70's

Pete sits behind him next to Keith, both are playing air guitar and drums. When Marriott switches from Hammond organ to guitar after the first song Keith punches his leg since Marriott almost skipped a beat in the transition.
@@susanborkenhagen58 looks to me like he missed more than a beat. They started the music before he had a chance to pick up his guitar. Then he looks pissed and doesn't bother with his solo on Song of a Baker. Bless his heart - don't think he likes to mime. Thank you for this film - I believe this as not too long before they broke up? So happy to see them again.

@@susanborkenhagen58 That's correct. From what I have read, SF's were in Paris to record w/ Johnnie Halliday. Glen Johns (engineer) has said that while they were in the studio, a huge fight broke out and it was clear to him that was what broke them up. This was I believe in Nov/Early Dec. This show was recorded earlier than New Years, just shown then on TV. Glen's book "Soundman" is very interesting as he was present when all the greats recorded in the 60/70's.
However, he is too much of a gentleman to spill the dirt - darn! He said in his book he couldn't remember what the fight was about, but it was clear to him that it was serious. Watching this film, I believe you can see that there is tension. So sad, I wish they hadn't broken up....

Thanks Peter Marshall for posting this awesome New Year's Eve show from 49 years ago. Every act (except perhaps Les Variations) is enjoyable (and even watching Keith Moon and Pete Townsend getting into The Small Faces performance was amusing). The hard rock/soul fusion of Equality was a revelation -- I never heard of them before.
I thought Les Variations were mindblowing! that eastern tinged guitar solo during satisfaction just floored me. The Equals were a revelation to me too , I knew their singles and the song covered by the Clash but i wasn't ready for this!

the trafgely ...the tragedy about the BBC disposing of tapes and filmed material. 50s and 60's stars footage will never been seen again because they either dumped the lot or burned the footage. the French scrap their cars and destroy entire historic buildings, trash their environment but we treasure music and books like some old wizard in his castle. 1968 was the year that burned politicians and in a very ageist way, told the old folks to stuff it and dance.

I was 13 when this was filmed. Had I seen it I would have fainted from excitement. I was in a small town in Texas, but I was familiar with all these bands (except one).

Every performance is 100% live except for The who The who lip synced probably cuz for some contractual agreement or something who the hell knows but every performances LIVE

@@chris7brook i don't believe the Small Faces are live. Music for Song of a Baker starts before Steve has a chance to run from organ to pick up his guitar. He doesn't look too happy and doesn't even bother to mime his solo on same song. Still, how wonderful to see them one last time before they broke up )-:

From my knowledge Steve actually quit the band right after this show because he was so disappointed by the performance and was sick of the fact that they had to lip sing everything off of Ogden Nut Gone Flake because of the studio intricacies.

Priceless footage of some great bands!
I was in my teen , a runaway living in the streets of Paris, this type of show was prohibitive for people like me ( the crowd looks like they belonged to the Parisian "Bourgeoisie"), but I managed to see Jimmy Hendrix in a Small club in the suburbs, on his way to England his band got stuck as the airlines were striking, (damn, the whole France was striking in 1968) so he ended up performing where ever he could... Those were the days my friend :>)

This is simply fantastic. It would have been better had The Who and Small Faces played live but that said just terrific. Thank you very much indeed. Booked T were just the bomb. Joe Cocker... wow. And The Equals... where did that come from? As for the FMac at the end... such a shame they disintegrated such a short time later. What a band. Thanks for this wonderful post. Made my day.
Would have been nice to hear what they sounded like live. These songs were voice overed by their studio recordings.
Yeah, it comes off as pretty darned phoney- sounds like Joe Cocker and a few others were actually live...

Like everyone says, "Never see this again". Multiple bands all on the same venue. Man, how I miss those days when everything was new and so much fun. So damn innocent. You could hitchhike and not worry. You could have sex without a condom. EVERYBODY smoked pot. Difficult not to get melancholy.
CLEARLY they are not all at the same venue. There are at least four different venues that I can see (and I haven't gotten all the way through this).

@@chuckschillingvideos yea but still his point stands multiple of these guys were playing the venues. If anything makes his point stronger, it's that multiple of the same bands played at a bunch of different venues together.
I was in London for those years - it was just a magnificent time.
@@chuckschillingvideos This is at different venues but what Sam said is true. There were a lot of great shows back then where there were plenty of shows with multiple headliners, but when those shows were going on, lots of them weren't then.
