  • Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard on Riffs, Abandonment, & The Cure’s Influence on Dark Matter
    Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s latest album, Dark Matter. The guitarist gives us the inside on the joy and abandonment while making the LP with producer Andrew Watt, how it came together so much quicker than Gigaton, and working in a way they did in the early days of the group. On the guitar side, Gossard tells us how he finds space in a song with the addition of Watt and Josh Klinghoffer in the mix, why we never see him playing back-to-back on stage with Mike McCready, and how his focus is completely different than the lead guitarist. Interestingly, Stone also reveals that The Cure were a very big influence on the album, as well as U2. In fact, with U2 in mind, Gossard tells us why he doesn’t want Pearl Jam to play The Sphere, and then gives his thoughts on The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins deconstruction of “Dark Matter,” and, maybe most excitingly, says that he’d love to PJ to start on a follow up with Watt right away.

    Heard the album last night twice at the Global Cinema event in Montreal and it totally rocks! Best album since Yield IMO ! And yes I love all the albums. My favorite songs are react, respond, waiting for stevie, setting sun & upper hand. The drums, solos and vocals are incredible too! 😎

    This is the first album in a while I've heard Stone play some parts that are so distinctly Stone. He's been told to be a guy who won't play anything that sounds like something he's done before. I read that YEARS ago! I think Ed said that. However after listening to EVERY album, you can basically always point out Mike. Ten is where Stone laid the foundation. Since then you hear bits he plays that are descendants of those foundational chord patterns and riffs. He is vital to this band

      Most people are incapable of diagnosing "body language" believe it or not. It is usually just a projection of a person's own feelings and looking for confirmation bias. Meaning I have never seen anything close to "apathy" from Stone ever lol. In fact, he was electric on stage performing the Gigaton songs.

    I absolutely love that he connected yield and backspacer, because I've also felt like there's something similar to the energy of those records that captures whatever it was about Pearl jam that made me want to jump out of my skin when I first saw the music video for aive in 7th grade. so many of the other records are respectable but sort of feel like they're in the doldrums. it's angsty instead of optimistic. dark matter isn't perfect. it's way over compressed and too treble-y on the the guitars, but the overall energy just sounds like you're letting their soul shine through.

    funny that Stone mentions notes not being in the key. I just recently decided to learn music theory after playing guitar for like 30 years and I started noticing things like, hail hail begins with a d then an f, and those aren't in the same key. He's just like whatever.

  • @SpartanPridePod
    @SpartanPridePod Місяць тому

    Stone is right about the Sphere. Just follow the likely news from the 300 and 400 levels over the rest of the year. If they can ever make a V2 of it, about 3/4 the size and safer above the 200 level, may be a better Pearl Jam fit. Let's see what happens to that building here soon. Stone might have some insight there

    • @SpartanPridePod
      @SpartanPridePod Місяць тому +2

      @@cwilkerson3710 I just think it sounds good. I think the vocal is tucked for a reason, that's about as technical as I noticed. I'm no expert, but I'm with the masses. It plain sounds good. I don't know all of Watt's work but the stuff I know sounds good like this record and the Stones' new one. I'm sure others don't hear it that way. Surely there's a bunch of kids at SCAD or USC that have all the answer too.

    It's more irrelevant new PJ music. Haven't had a great album since Yield, and haven't had a legitimately good album since Avocado....18 years ago. Every album: "This is some of our best work and the hardest sounding in a long time." Then, it always ends up being neither of those things.

  • @needley
    @needley Місяць тому

    I have heard the album twice at a listening gathering in London and it isnt a great album at all. Vedder said that this is their best work ever, what a crock of shit. It's such a sycophantic interview. Not a Pearl Jam album the interviewer doesn't like says it all. Pearl Jam haven't made a decent album since Binaural.

    • @craigdavies1117
      @craigdavies1117 Місяць тому +1

      This is much better than binaural, just needs more listens, binaural wasn’t received well at first either. Something’s take time, or maybe it’s just not for you. It’s grown on me, didn’t like it much at first two days in and I really like it.
