    Once I'm done with my makeup, I step away. I finish my hair, get dressed etc. Then I come back for a second look. I immediately notice things that are "off" and try to add/blend/fix.

    I really must encourage anyone that’s older than 40 with oily skin to embrace it!! If you’re lucky enough to have what I’m sure was the bane of your existence when you were younger, it’s really a godsend. I’m past 60 now, and I’m adoring it. It was impossible to work with in my youth, but now I feel blessed.

    I love the dewy trend, because my oily skin (especially when adding sunscreen) is finally trendy and I no longer feel self concious over it. However, I don't wear base make up except for concealer, so I can imagine the experience being very different for an oily skin person wearing dewy foundation..

    I switched to dewy foundation bc I have very dry skin and matte or satin finish foundations stuck on all my dry patches and emphasized the texture. The dewiness provides glow to my skin without looking oily at all and it doesn't break up near my nose or smile lines. Once I switched, it immediately showed that all my other products like blush, contour, bronzer, highlight all melted into my base way better!

  • @katieharris7219
    @katieharris7219 23 дні тому +23

    As I've gotten older, my face shape has changed and I've had a lot of volume loss in my cheeks. BUT, the "lift" your face as the technique prescribed for more mature faces--like blushing and bronzing in an upturned style--was only serving to make my face more gaunt. Once I changed the placement to going across my face (instead of the apple-to-temple style for lift), it has made my cheeks look fuller and made me feel more like myself. Further, I think the horizontal bronzer placement makes so much more sense because it actually mimics where the sun would naturally hit the face. The sun isn't going to "sculpt" your cheekbones! Save that for contour if you decide that is even a necessary step in your routine.
    On that note, I think contour placement has been a one-size-fits-all model for a very long time when it comes to tutorials. Learning how to work with your own face shape and bone structure has been very illuminating for me. Both Kackie and Alex Aneale have done great videos on how to achieve this.
    Lastly, I hate dewy, tacky, flypaper makeup. A little glow can have a time and place, but I'd much rather be in control of exactly where I want that light to peek through, so I powder and highlight strategically. Above all, living in the South where humidity is a fact of life year-round, you will have pry my powders out of my cold, dead hands!
    Great video, Kelly! I am all for anything that encourages folks to feel beautiful the way they are and play to those features rather than using makeup to hide, disguise, and cover up their special, unique beauty. ❤❤❤

    • @CatFurniture974
      @CatFurniture974 22 дні тому +3

      I use cream products, but I’m just so much more used to powders. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, a lot of the cream products available would clog pores and cause breakouts, or, if your skin was oily, would last about an hour before disappearing. And some would oxidize into a shade more orange than I wanted. Cream products have come *such* a long way and there are so many good ones now. But I always find myself reaching for powder products when I’m in a hurry, and just want to “whoosh and go.” And powders DO stay on better when it’s hot. I don’t have that “my face is slowly sliding off” feeling.

    I think dewy makeup is a marketing term especially that it’s always used with “youthful” and that’s going to bring a lot of $$. A youthful glow is not shine of product but by skin fullness and having no hallowness in the face. That’s why they always say you look older when you lose your facial fat cuz the shadow start to appear not the skin turning matte.

    • @sebumpostmortem
      @sebumpostmortem 22 дні тому +4

      Perfectly described. It' s actually skin fullness, tightness and bouncing back muscles. _Freshly boiled egg_ is one of the terms used in China to describe the ideal: round, soft, pale, full, naturally wet and bouncy. Imagine the western market trying to introduce this label and make it desirable 😆😅...

    The only thing I like about the super dewy trend is that I don’t have to do anything to achieve it 😅 I have super oily skin so I literally just have to do my makeup with minimal products and wait about a half hour 😂 and boom SUPER DEW! I actually love a matte look but it’s not practical to maintain if you have extremely oily skin. I shoot for something in between because while the super dewy is super easy for me I personally think it looks like an oily mess. Mixing satin finish all over, glowy just on high points and matte on tzone leaves just the right balance for the day and maintenance is just blotting the tzone throughout the day.

  • @estellehowell4414

    I don't want dewy makeup. In between skincare and SPF, my skin looks pretty dewy verging on shiny before I start putting on makeup, any more shine, and it will be sliding off!
    Having experienced that when going dancing and wearing tinted moisturiser, I now prefer to set my base makeup or even wear a powder foundation. As you say, it doesn't need to be flat matte, but soft or satin matte is good.

    I know it’s said a lot, but the biggest thing for me is using colours that match each other, and match me! If I use mauve on my lips, it goes on my cheeks too, and my eyes if I can! Having consistency in the colours really ties a look together in my opinion :)
    With something more colourful, like a blue eyeshadow, having something in your look that’s complimentary (such as an orange lip, blush or orange inner corner) REALLY makes the look pop!

      Oh my gosh yes! Coordinate those colors! I’m the same way - I will do my whole face in, for instance, plum or mauve. Even if a color is “just” for lips (red) or “just” for eyes (turquoise, to name two) I want to be sure the rest of my face harmonizes. Deliberately chosen complementary colors are great (like your example of orange with blue). Carefully chosen is the watchword. I don’t like looking as if I just grabbed whatever color at random and slapped it on my face - *that* is what often causes that “overly made up” look.

    I think people who get upset when you call dewy “oily” really need to reprioritize their skin concerns. Oily skin is really not a bad thing to have and can actually “delay” aging because it’s a natural skin protectant. Everyone being like “it’s gross” or “it’s dirty” are being super immature

    • @dallasdoesmakeup
      @dallasdoesmakeup 23 дні тому +11

      Like sorry not sorry but oily skin is just by definition less dirty than skin with makeup on it

    • @NormieNeko
      @NormieNeko 18 днів тому

      My skin is naturally "dewy" and not oily except for maybe my forehead at the end of the day. It looks healthy in a way "matte" makeup never will, because it is my natural skin, and I have minimal breakouts. I don't even wear foundation because my skin looks like I'm wearing a dewy or satin light coverage foundation.
      So I mostly find it misguided when dewy is considered the same as oily when it isn't the case for some people. Someone else mentioned a "satin" finish as being better than a dewy finish, but a dewy finish can look more satin than high gloss.
      My real dewy skin has a satin finish. It's not oily skin. It's not dewy or satin makeup. It's genuine satin dewy skin, and it's honestly as youthful and healthy looking as the beauty myth tells. It's just not as common as it should be because people have unhealthy diets, toxic environments, unfortunate genetics, and poor beauty or hygiene practices. There's too much investment in makeup and not enough in actual skincare.
      I use a prescription retinoid because it is far more potent than any over-the-counter retinol. I use the correct oils and serums to moisturize my skin type. I have that knowledge because I've gone out of my way to find what works for me.
      As for matte skin, it can look nice. I'm not saying matte skin can't. I am saying that matte makeup often does not look so nice. It has a tendency to be lackluster and dry or flaky. There's a difference. It's the same story with oily skin that lacks breakouts vs oily makeup or oily skin that is heavily acne prone.
      ...But because I was able to easily achieve dewy or satin skin without makeup, while trying to maintain mostly healthy skin habits and routines, I prefer it over other finishes. I know it's not impossible to achieve, and it's honestly an attractive look that does not age poorly. I think everyone should be aware that it can be done without makeup (with some exceptions, of course).

That is how I apply my primer and foundation but somehow it hadn’t dawned on me yet to do the same with my concealer 😆, thank you I’m going to start trying this

    Ask yourself, how would you do your makeup if you didn’t have any social media/beauty influencers etc. That thought changed the game for me- just wear what you want, it’s your face. Wear it with confidence and you will glow. Once you stop caring about trends or the opinions of others, you feel free to just wear what you think looks best on your own face.

I figured out I have deep-set eyes last year, and learning how to enhance them made me fall in love with eyeshadow! But it definitely was easier and more accessible to learn about the Instagram face than my own features and techniques to enhance them.

    I am, ahem, past 50, and I still prefer a soft or semi-matte. Dewy just looks greasy on me. My oily skin stayed oily as I aged, so if I go dewy I look like a teenager with wrinkles. I also prefer that my makeup *last*, and soft matte lasts longer than dewy, which has a tendency to either soak in or rub off. I can touch up lipstick, or setting powder, but not foundation; sorry, once that bad boy goes on my skin it’s got to stay put for at least 6 hours.
    I have flashbacks to the early 90’s, when dewy once more had its moment after the frosty, frosty, magenta 80’s. I seem to remember a spread from Allure where they mixed eyeshadow with *Vaseline* to get that shiny translucent look. That…is not going to work in real life; it will last about 5 minutes before creasing and running. Likewise the “freshening up” of your foundation with more moisturizer instead of powder. I could not get behind it then and I can’t now.
    So my beloved Danessa Myricks Yummy Skin Serum does get a patting of powder. This way it still has that glowy semi-translucent look, but, I don’t look like the Wicked Witch of the West as she melts. And thankfully if one wants a translucent or stain eyeshadow there are many to pick from and you don’t have to do the jury-rigging that we, or rather, makeup artists, had to do back in the day.

Oh boy, little did I know)) Last year, after a long "minimalist" period during/after the pandemic, I started doing low-key cosplay makeup, featuring bold eyes with altered shape, really bold blush (whereas most people now tend to use bright colours, I love my taupey-plummy blush that makes me look a little bit like a manhwa villain) and bold lips. I really do use A TON of blending, I rely on my natural Caucasian/slightly masculine features (when I'm doing contouring or aegyo sal, for instance), AND I have completely switched to smaller brushes. My larger brushes, especially those for the eyes, worked perfectly when I preferred easier makeup, but for more complex and detailed makeup looks, I have finally realised that you can never get the same results with your regular brushes, you really need something more tapered, angled, etc.
    Btw, as for the dewy look, I have oily skin, so I really appreciate this thend for normalising shiny skin. Although my eye and lip makeup is usually quite heavy, I do prefer light-to-medium coverage and semi-matte finish for my skin. Even though I sometimes have imperfections, I'd rather they were a bit visible, than applying tons and tons of foundation and powder. And now, during the day, I only keep track of my nose not to be too shiny, As for my cheeks, chin and forehead, I have a much more relaxed approach)

    As I've aged I've found too matte makeup makes me look 10 years older by days end. I'm ok being 38, not ready to look like I'm pushing 50.
    Best thing I started doing was applying a glowy primer and a satin leaning matte lighter coverage foundation. Even if I have some acne this had made my skin just pop! Less foundation is going to give you that "I have fantastic skin naturally" look. Also, liquid lipstick makes a fantastic long wear blush that blends seamlessly without looking powdery or slipping away in 4 hours.

    I never understood the hype around dewy skin. The weird thing is: I don't see very dewy make up in real life. Only on UA-cam. I don't live in America, so maybe that matters, but no one in my environment walks around with an all over shiny face. Only online. And the UA-camrs keep on raving about their glow, and I keep wondering.... Do they really think it looks good?

    • @CatFurniture974
      @CatFurniture974 20 днів тому

      They’re doing that look for their audience on UA-cam or TikTok or Instagram, which is going to look entirely different from face to face in real life. Most ordinary folks are going to dress and make up to be seen in real life; which is why you don’t see a lot of ultra-shiny faces on the street (unless they’re runners!). FWIW, I live in the US, and at least where I live, nobody walks around with a super-shiny face either unless they are very young or in the beauty or fashion industry.

    I’ve always preferred a satin finish on the skin. It looks the most realistic.
    Recently, I’ve been doing a no-makeup makeup for my base and brows (especially brows) and then adding the shadow and lip I want to that. That way, my makeup looks more natural overall.
    Edit: I’ve tried downturned eyeliner after watching your other video and I love it! I want to try the lower blush placement next!

    Stopping this video at 3:48 to say that I absolutely agree that dewy makeup can make you look older. I have extremely dry skin so do appreciate some glow to my makeup as my skin doesn't make much on its own. However, I mattify around my nose as any glow accentuates my pores and I hate that. I spent my 30s not setting my under eyes at all and loved it. I am 40 and have been setting for the last few months and thought it made me look older so, 2 days ago I decided to go back to not setting. Big mistake! Huge! I looked at least 65 under my eyes and HATED my makeup. I set again yesterday and realized I actually looked younger that way. I don't think my makeup needs to make me look youthful, I am blessed to have made it to 40, but it also doesn't need to make me look 25 years older either 🤣

    Hi Kelly. Let me start off by first saying that I think you are very beautiful. You have a beautiful, classic yet natural beauty. Which I quite love! This video is probably my top favorite on UA-cam as of recently. The reason is because of the honesty that you give. Also, I love how you touched on one of the most important topics, in my opinion, which is that all face shapes are much different. Every person has a different face structure with different facial features. Therefore, as you pointed out in this video, the way someone applies their makeup is NOT and Should NOT be the same for everyone. I think makeup application/placement is just as important as say each of us deciding on what shades of makeup we want to use. It is just as important as the blending process. Makeup is designed to enhance our natural beauty. Whatever that looks like for each person individually. As you pointed out, we don't all have the same features. Therefore, I agree with you completely. Makeup placement is and should be quite different from someone else's. I believe we all are beautiful. We need to not follow trends so much. But use makeup in a way that enhances your own NATURALLY BEAUTIFUL TRAITS! I love your honesty and how you view makeup and beauty. Not in a way that "all size fits one." You have a fresh take on the beauty community. I think we need more of this type of outlook and honesty. I love your ideas and videos. Keep up the great work you do. You are beautiful. As always!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ❤ to you. I'm looking forward to more of your videos! Take care, Kelly.

    it may seem obvious, but one thing that’s really important for me is picking the right shades. I have lighter features, so i use a brown eyeliner for wings instead of classic black because it seems to make my eyes look way too heavy. a lot of times certain colors can be trending for lips, blush, eyes, etc but they’re not always best suited for your individual features!

    Something I’ve long suspected but finally confirmed and accepted: in order to match my jawline, chin and lower cheeks to my neck, I need to use a foundation shade that matches my neck! The rest of my face, which naturally catches more light, is almost always going to be at least a half shade deeper. And that’s okay.
    Today I tried this method using two foundation shades and finally felt like I had a leveled-up complexion that didn’t look incongruous, because I wasn’t fighting the actual skin tones that exist on half of my face for once!

    Kelly I really enjoyed how you explained the process of using matte and giving suggested products along with application methods. Good video.
    Dewy is a good finish as long as it's not an overkill. Soft radiance or luminous yet it still look like a glow from within. I stray away from matte finishes cause the fear of showing any dry skin or feel too harsh such as tightness. I have done satin which Becca had a VERY nice satin foundation. If it is a softer matte (demi-matte), I can get down with it. Blurred and soft suppleness ---> it's a whole vibe!

    I have dry skin and I am not a fan of super dewey makeup. I'll keep it a bit glowy and natural for work, by using cream products and a powder that is not super drying (sometimes the makeup forever loose powder and sometimes my mac skinfinish). But if I go out at night or to a wedding, I will be MATTE and FULL COVERAGE BABY!

    As an oily girl, doing my makeup with any product leaves me still looking a bit shiny, and this has always been the case. But the glamorization of "dewiness" has contorted my perspective to where I don't hate my shininess like I did when matte was in. Hopefully that continues for me even when matte is back. 😊

      Also I don't really care about skin 'imperfections' like no thanks I don't need my makeup to be 'long wear' or not even look like real skin anymore. I can't even find foundations for my undertone nor do I care to. I prefer to just put on blush, eye makeup, and lip products if Im wearing makeup at all. I don't like the way matte makeup feels on my skin at all I hate feeling like stuff is on my skin so Im not a huge fan of face powders anyways

    I like to use setting spray before I start, in the middle once I’ve applied creams, after I’ve applied powders and then at the end!! I also learned an awesome trick from Nikki La rose and she applies powder to her eyebrows and over her lip liner to ensure longevity! With the eyebrows, it’s helpful to apply translucent power so your brow pencil isn’t sliding all over the place

    Eh I’ve just never embraced the dewy makeup trend. On me, I think I just look sweaty. And not in a good, sexy way. In a, “it’s summer & I’ve been working hard outside, sweating my butt off” kinda way. I’ve got mild rosacea too, so my pink face definitely lends credibility to the sweaty vibe😂 My skin is naturally pretty dry though, so I try to do the most with my skincare just so I can get through a workday with semi-matte makeup & not look flakey.

    Typically my makeup starts out looking a bit dewy, not greasy, but I have very dry skin so by the end of the day, I’m typically looking satin or matte but my skin doesn’t feel tight and uncomfortable and my makeup isn’t cracking and looking scaly and weird. I tend to like the way my makeup looks at the end of the day better than the beginning.
    It’s purposeful and I’ve been doing it this way since before the trend and will probably continue the same way after the trend has passed.
    I also have always preferred light coverage, I don’t like the feeling of a heavy foundation. My makeup tends to not look like I’m wearing much makeup, it usually wears really well but if it does wear off a bit, it’s not very noticeable. And because I don’t use much powder it’s super easy to repair/add a little more in the evenings if I’m going somewhere.
    It’s nice that products for people like me are easier to find right now because back in 2016, when I realized full coverage foundation was never going to be my thing, there were not many options.

  • @rainbowpeachiz
    @rainbowpeachiz 22 дні тому

    I don't like dewy makeup. To me it just looks oily, as someone with extremely oily skin I do not buy anything that says it will be dewy, glowy ect. My oils will break it down faster than it took me to put it on lol. I've tried some satin matte products and they hold up better but not much. I go full matte and then I like a glowy blush, or bronzer and a highlighter. I want targeted glow lol.
    The makeup trick that changed everything for me is using a setting spray after all my makeup is done and then a powder puff to push the settings spray in. It blends everything together, softens any lines that may still be there and helps the makeup to last longer.

    I idk, but last summer i discovered that for me light dewy makeup it better than "holding" (lol) makeup in place with powder. Dewy makes my oily ass look like its shine was intended from the beginning, what is kinda helpful. Because no matt power has ever worked for 9 hours or more on me, especially in heat - it becomes a whole layered mess not to be fixed
    Like, just dont layer too much of glowy stuff lol

I also don't like skin tints, they seem kinda useless. If i don't want any coverage I'm not wearing any product😅

    actually i think your skin looks so fresh and radiant in those clips without powder. i think you are born to wear glowy makeup. it just looks so natural to you. sadly, i dont get why youre so against it. i love this trend it looks so natural when not too overdone and tasteful but not up to a point of being just barely noticeable, satin or matte. everyone look so natural and rejuvenated, fresh and stuff. sorry girlies but glowy dewy soft makeup might be it.

    As someone that sweats easily on their face by doing any sort of effort, dewy makeup is a no go. Add to this my combo skin and it’s a disaster if I don’t use powder. I don’t understand how you don’t set your face, my hair would get stuck to my face, If I touch it it just comes off… just how ? I think it just looks good on camera and that’s why it was so trendy. Otherwise it has no real benefits for long term wear.
