I definitely do that varied phrasing. But seeing this, what is the literal definition of a belt? I always thought it was loud forward notes. Like I think Celine does pretty often.
Hi Chris, I was wondering if you could help with this question please?: What is it called/which technique/or how is it best described when a singer/vocalist changes during the chorus of a song?? For example, a track might start with a soft/normal/open/smooth sound and then the chorus kicks in and they're really giving it some.. aha!.. Is it belting, just a higher pitch, more compression? I'm not really sure what I need to search for, I just know it exists. I'm not 100% happy with how I sound on verses like this, but I absolutley choke to bits when I try and ramp it up for a chorus, which is incredibly deflating :/ I'm just hoping to find out which video I need to search for. Thanks for any help! Example of tracks that do this, though I'm sure 95% of the worlds music does it anyway (Hopefully a nice mix of genre's :) ): "Stars", "Simply Red". "Iris", "Goo Goo Dolls". "Many of Horror", "Biffy Clyro" (Simon starts whatever this technique is called in the verse after a softer intro). "Vienna", "Ultravox". There's so many more but this is already the worlds longest comment, so I'll probably just sto
You’re referring to the chorus “lift”. They raise in pitch and intensity to create a story arc within the song. It’s so awesome! I love when songs do this!
I recently found Jonny uploading to twitch. Just random live streams, some gaming and humming about. He has some footage of him and a buddy doing the actual producer side of some songs, legit coming up with stuff on the fly and BSin in the chat. I was missing him; glad he is back. Handle is thepearlboy4l (that's an L)
Hey Chris, I keep getting this message when I click on the link (This challenge page was accidentally cached and is no longer available.) Any advice on how to get past this?
This is cool!! It seems like you’re fighting each other a little in terms of terminology but ultimately able to find common ground. Does Jonny seem to know what compression is or know if he’s doing it or be conscious of it at all??? Also, is there a difference in muscular effort between that backwards placement and the forward placement??
You know I think Jonny himself is learning about how he does what he does so his next song is going to be ARMED with that knowledge and he’s going to kill it harder than he did on beautiful death.

Hi Chris,
I was wondering if you could help with this question please?:
What is it called/which technique/or how is it best described when a singer/vocalist changes during the chorus of a song??
For example, a track might start with a soft/normal/open/smooth sound and then the chorus kicks in and they're really giving it some.. aha!.. Is it belting, just a higher pitch, more compression?
I'm not really sure what I need to search for, I just know it exists. I'm not 100% happy with how I sound on verses like this, but I absolutley choke to bits when I try and ramp it up for a chorus, which is incredibly deflating :/ I'm just hoping to find out which video I need to search for.
Thanks for any help!
Example of tracks that do this, though I'm sure 95% of the worlds music does it anyway (Hopefully a nice mix of genre's :) ):
"Stars", "Simply Red".
Solid belting
I recently found Jonny uploading to twitch. Just random live streams, some gaming and humming about. He has some footage of him and a buddy doing the actual producer side of some songs, legit coming up with stuff on the fly and BSin in the chat. I was missing him; glad he is back. Handle is thepearlboy4l (that's an L)
I need you to look into Rory Rodriguez from Dayseeker and figure how that guy sings. please!
Hey Chris, I keep getting this message when I click on the link (This challenge page was accidentally cached and is no longer available.)
Any advice on how to get past this?
What’s the song?
This is cool!! It seems like you’re fighting each other a little in terms of terminology but ultimately able to find common ground. Does Jonny seem to know what compression is or know if he’s doing it or be conscious of it at all???
Also, is there a difference in muscular effort between that backwards placement and the forward placement??
He has no idea what he’s doing. He just goes. :) but that’s what makes these kinds of singer fun to dissect!
@@chrisliepe haha! Classic talented folk! Thankfully YOU know what you’re doing, Chris. Has Mr Craig learnt anything from you, do you think??
You know I think Jonny himself is learning about how he does what he does so his next song is going to be ARMED with that knowledge and he’s going to kill it harder than he did on beautiful death.
Can anyone please tell me the song Jonny is singing at the start please? That is some catchy shit!
Yet to be released!
@@chrisliepe awesome, can't wait to hear it!
This dude is a good example of natural talent, gifted.
You should get Russell Allen on here. Another natural.
I might actually cry if Chris gets Russ on. Lord it would be so amazing.
What song was at 0:30? Thanks in advance.
Bruh what is that song called, it slaps and reminds of me old Jonny era DGD
Everybody is talking about the lesson I’m more concerned about what tf he was recording in the beginning?! He’s doing rock stuff again?
He is like this live! It’s crazy with all those tattoos and scams…he’s voice is angelic
This was a good one!
Is the raspiness coming from the false folds or the belting itself?
False cords
What mic ARE you recording all these takes through, BTW?
Forgive me but what song is this excerpt Jonny’s singing from? I love his voice and want to find this song!
Yo whats the name of the song he was singing in the beginning?
