      I mean, I think it's a fair point. Counting next expansion, we will have had 8 new Jobs come into the game since they started doing role quests. That's 23 Job quest storylines in total for the quest team to work on compared to the 5 you get with role quests.

      So no counter argument then? They are unsustainable, that's just a fact. It's better to spend those resources on a new storyline for the new Eureka.

    I was bummed when job quests were retired in ShB, but when role quests came, they were basically an expansion of the MSQ storyline. So I thought, "OK, this is actually good. If they can do the same for DoL/DoH in the next expansion, we'll be cooking." But then we got EW and DT role quests, which added very little to the MSQ and were just below average side quests. It's frustrating and leaves that feeling of, "We lost job quests for this?"

    • @Kanaleah
      @Kanaleah 5 днів тому +6

      I had that feeling, but it wasn't for job quests. It was for how Endwalker was so much story condensed into one badly paced expansion, leaving out so many great aspects, only for Dawntrail. "They skipped two or three expansions worth of content for THIS?"
      It's something Yoshi P keeps doing, and I have no idea why.

    • @SiriusPharos

      @@Kanaleah Is it Yoshi P or is it the fact they keep switching writers every 2 expansions which we do not know if he has anything to do with that perhaps the current writer wanted a break or a shot at a main line Final Fantasy like the ARR/Heavensward writer got to do FFXVI. Most long running series that have the same cast keep the same writer unless he or she passes away suddenly. FFXIV is like One Piece but the writer switches every 2-4 seasons. They then made it more complicated in Shadowbringers by making side content canon. Now we have what two different takes on time travel that contradict each other along with two ways aether work that contradict each other which both can be fixed with more story but will the next writer care enough to address it?

    • @Kanaleah
      @Kanaleah 5 днів тому +6

      @@SiriusPharos It was Yoshi P who made this decision. Before Endwalker, Ishikawa had drafts going up to 8.0. It was Yoshi P's decision to consolidate them into a single expansion. Many interviews and comments from Ishikawa indicate they did not see eye to eye on many aspects of Endwalker. It was Yoshi P who took her off 7.x, who rushed to the end of the Hydaelyn/Zodiark arc, and quite frankly Yoshi P is not a very creative person. He is a corporate guy, his strength was management and putting the best people in the right positions, but he has faltered on this over time.
      Yoshi P is apparently very hard to work with. So much so, that Matsuno refuses to work with him ever again, based on his various statements on Twitter.
      Also, all side content is canon. It's just more dubious when it happens in the timeline.

    I speak for my entire friend group (which we had this exact discussion a week ago) that we would all rather have job quests than the role quests or even majority of the side quests.

  • @8BitCerberus

    At least a "check-in" or "capstone" quest for each job, each expansion, would be appreciated. I'm ok with the role quests, but I really would like to check in with the trainers and npcs we interacted with during the job quests.
    And regarding Solar Bahamut I've heard the theory of it being Hydaelyn but they didn't want to have people summoning Hydaelyn and spoiling anything for sprouts so they went with a Bahamut theme again. And since canonically our WoL is essentially making up new abilities as they continue to progress once they're past the particular job's quests/trainers (lvl 70 for ARR - SB jobs, for example) the idea is our SMN WoL, now bathed in Hydaelyn's aether, crafted a new summon inspired by her, not only the crystals and summong circle, but the "blades" of the wings if you count them there are 14 to represent the reflections and source.

      I was thinking how cool would have been if all job quest NPCs would have been our view in the world of how bad the "turning" was for the average person.
      It would have given so much more urgency if you saw your teachers being affected or fight alongside you from ground level!
      The RDM NPC could have shown being afflicted himself and you toghether with Arya would have to remind him that he is not alone, he has plenty of RDM disciples and citizens who belive in him. And at the end of MSQ you would have this hearth to hearth with him before he yeets himself out of the story.
      Or DRK job quest where it would afflict you and you would have the DRK NPCs trying to help you and keep you calm by assuring you they have everything under control and you have to find your inner darkness and work toghether through this.
      It's mostley just a though of what if, you get the idea.

    I hadn't thought about these in a long time, but I really did enjoy the job quests when I first discovered the game. I loved getting to work with the Tonberry as a Scholar and the lore of Summoners. Also it's a little strange how little the game mentions Y'shtola's sister if you hadn't played these quests

    • @8BitCerberus
      @8BitCerberus 5 днів тому +2

      While brief, you do meet Y'mitra in HW, during the MSQ, so even if you didn't do the SMN quests you do meet her sister. I do wonder if there was maybe some cut ARR quests or maybe 1.0 quests where you meet her regardless whether your SMN or not, because it is a little odd when Y'shtola says something like "Forgive me Mitra" at the end of the ARR patches. I just assume it's not meant to be anything more than her saying her personal goodbye's and not necessarily something the player would or need to actually know about at that point. If you did the SMN quests then you know, if you didn't, then you don't (yet) know.

    I would love them to bring job quests back. The issue they gave for ShB onward not having them is just having too many jobs and having that many extra quests was getting too much, but if they literally just had 3 quests instead of the usual 5/6, with shorter storylines to match (just remove the needless fluff), then you're looking at a similar number of job quests total as there were in ARR/HW.

  • @Kyrrial
    @Kyrrial 5 днів тому +1

    I agree with the justification for WHY job quests weren't continued: it wasn't sustainable in the long term as they add jobs every expansion. But I think a decent workaround to this would be if, instead of ROLE quests, they put the job NPCs into groups, like their own adventuring party, and we joined them. So, say, you'd have group 1 being NPCs from DRK, SMN, SCH, and RPR being brought together (in, say, a tavern), and we'd join them on their quest to do something, and get to see them interact or something. Honestly, like long-running mini-campaigns with these characters, some of whom we actually like that can continue each expansion or something. I just wish we had more to do with them... I go back to talk to them each expansion to see if there's new dialogue with them (they addd new dialogue to some of them with ShB and EW). I mean, I think this would be a far better idea that what we got for the DT role quests...

  • @vampirebite44
    @vampirebite44 5 днів тому +7

    To be fair, I fully support the role quests but only in SHB and EW. There was an actual THREAT to us, to our allies - all of them were about uniting people (or lore in the case of SHB). In DT, the "villains" are just sore losers who got too much into roleplaying a villain. Personal vendeta is fine but come on.. at least try to be menacing or evil, don´t just go around tickling people. Personally, I didn´t like any of the role quests of DT. It worked in SHB and EW so they had to copy paste it and force some "conflict", stupid as it may be.

    At least we got a hand-waving explanation for Phoenix being us surrounded by light-aspected aether and that being what Phoenix was suffused in. And the three big summons can be explained with our journey to Elpis and learning the core of Creation Magic, as well as the Lopporrits knowing the true method to summoning Primals. But Solar Bahamut has zero explanation, aside from the implication that it's Hydaelyn or Bahamut's "True Form" as per Yoshi P's claim. Which was a BS spoiler-free explanation from Yoshi P because Bahamut was a regular golden dragon that otherwise looked like the rest of his siblings as per the official drawing ffxiv released of Midgardsormr's 7 spawn.
    But so many of us don't like the ugly Digimon-looking summon. And I'm sure Venat is rolling in her grave seeing that THAT THING is how we perceived her

    I really enjoyed the ARR and HW job quests, allthough with Stormblood it felt like they were already declining with only some being still strong.
    And that's not even including the fact that you used to learn new abilities from them, which Stormblood only kept for the level 70 ones.
    The biggest offender imho is the "Paladin" quest, which kind of forgot that you were actually a paladin and went back to you being a gladiator. And conveniently around that time, certain other job quests like the samurai one made gladiators - who are supposedly among the best disciples of war when it comes to raw combat skill - seem like total chumps compared to samurai. The biggest slap in the face was when Aldis was like "well, I couldn't get better as a gladiator so I became a samurai".
    They done paladins dirty.

    Take SCH for example…it ends on a cliffhanger. IIRC you go off in search of Lily, essentially the proto fairy which Eos and Selene are just aspects of. Its never resolved and instead “here you go here’s seraph!” Who was never mentioned lore-wise to my recollection. Makes no sense 🤷

    The Job quests were uneven. Some Jobs had good ones, some had forgettable nothingburgers. I wish they'd put all the effort and budget for storytelling into the Job quests and artifact / relic obtainment and make the massively long MSQ optional.

  • @SiriusPharos
    @SiriusPharos 5 днів тому

    I think they should edit the role quests of Shadowbringers to make them canon and in the MSQ along with Warring Triad before they think about any follow up to the Endwalker patch content. I also think they should do away with role quests in general because they present the same problem Crystal Tower, Alexander, The Twinning and Coils of Bahamut present when the story starts to consider things canon. If they do not make the role quests of Shadowbringers fold into the MSQ when they finally bring Zero back it will be a weaker experience for not using Unukalhai and Cyella.
    As for job quests I think they would just complicate things where they have already complicated the story by making side content canon. There is also what I from a outside perspective see as a waste of resources when the game has alternate versions of cutscenes depending on if you did side content before reaching that part of the MSQ.

    Hi there! Resident Summoner lover and lore buff! I have an answer for y’all about Solar Bahamut!
    So as we all know, summoners have the capacity to evoke egis, aetheric entities made from aether being meticulously organized and formed together while be influenced by the ambient aether within that is absorbed by us when we fell a primal and their form dissipates. Phew! That was a mouthful! Mmmkay. So during the end of Shadowbringers we encountered Lunar Bahamut. A version of Bahamut that was gnarled and deformed by the twisted corrupt version of tempering that Anima and its towers caused. Then later, we encounter and defeat (sadly) Hydaelyn. Solar Bahamut is what happens when the Warrior of Light becomes so proficient at summoning, they construct a new Egi. One that combines the influenced nature of Lunar Bahamut with the Light and sheer power of Hydaelyn! This is why the wings are made of swords (Hydaelyn’s favorite weapon), and it summons her glyphs when using special abilities.
    On a non lore level, this was their answer to giving us a non spoiler version of Hydaelyn. If sprouts saw summoners calling forth Hydaelyn, it would give away the fact that one, she’s a primal. And two, we defeat her.

    I always felt like the bahamut we had from the get go is demi bahamut or like a dark bahamut. Maybe not zodiarks but a lesser form. Solar bahamut feels like hydaelyns boon to summoners. Honestly maybe the lore is just that we beat her last expansion and we have grown to be able to incorporate her power into a summon- though summoning her wouldve been better. Now we need ashen phoenix, shiva, ramuh, leviathan + etc lol.

    I kinda liked the Shadowbringers ones. The EW ones were a slog and I still haven't finished them all because they are basically an hour of yapping followed by 5-10 minutes of actually doing something. I liked the physical ranged though because it was amazing seeing Yugiri and Brosetsu again. I haven't touched DT still and doubt I will for a long time. I understand they were crunched for time with SHB and EW, but that time has long since passed. Bring back the job quests.

    Summoners kind of break the lore. The fact we're summoning specifically the Eikons really draws a lot of questions. The fact multiple societies fell to even summon their Gods just for us to casually summon it as a Pet really makes it hard to believe in the Main Plot when you're a Summoner. Summoners if anything should have the most lore significant quests every single patch just because they're so rare in the stories setting. Lore wise the MC is one of the few Summoners in all of the world. It would make sense Hydelin would to be summoned but it also significantly undermines the entire plot of ARR. We see lots Black Mages in the forefront of the story solving the issues or Cids Technology. We never see Summoners in the Main Story and I just have a million questions as to why that is? The fact Summoner is even a class at all is still weird considering everything the main plot has been doing. Whenever I walked around the world map and did all the side quest and raid series there's clearly a lot more going on in the lore than the main story. The fact they're so disconnected makes everything much more harder to understand. The fact the entire NieR raid happens without any of the main casts is crazy. There's just so much content in FF14 that is disconnected for no real good reason. Like how is a Summoner not the main villain of the entire story? There's many plot holes with how they did their Job Quests and the overall story of FF14. There's too many factions that have no interconnection whatsoever. Dawntrail especially makes all these stories feel completely isolated from each other. All that lore and narrative build up.... For Wuk Lamant. Something had to of happened at the writers table. Once the Garlean Empire stopped being evil and all Ascians defeated they really didn't know what to do. Just started tossing cameos and references left and right with no real thought. The narrative peaked and ended with "Endwalker" so it's ridiculous how much of a filler Dawntrail story is when there's a million other things they could've done.

    I dont have any particular feelings about job quests or role quests. Which I think is bad. Questing in this game is particularly dull. However, there were some fun moments in job quests where you can use skills to progress the quest.
    I just wish there was more to the questing experience rather than just having hit-or-miss fetch quests just to get our capstone abilities or job gear. Escort missions as tank where you have to use your defensives on an NPC or stand in front of them for wild charge mechs would be cool. Or quests where you'd have to find some relics as black mage and cast the right spell on it based on a clue. Idk. Something more interesting than walk n talk n fight the next mob.

    I liked the Dawntrail role quests because I like when FF14 goes goofy -- but yeah, I understand that I'm in the minority here. Individual job quests would be nice, so long as we get better design than the Paladin Job Quest, a job based around tanking and protecting people, that is focused on one-on-one duels.

    I always find it weird people miss job quests. Like do you remember how many of them were absolute nothingburgers? Black Mages and Paladins had absolutely nothing of significance going on with them after ARR. Some might argue Paladins didn't even have anything going on in ARR. Some were great, like Dark Knight, but those were the minority. Most job quests were absolutely nothing but a waste of time.
    At least when role quests were introduced they once again had a point and a story significance. Of course that's out of the window with Dawntrail, but that's no reason to bring back something that was overall even worse. Forcing the writers to come up with storylines for every single job every single expansion is an absolute waste of dev time and resources.

Still, Im grateful to the Twelve I don't have to go through a boring uninteresting story with every single job I level.

    Better to have job quests than an MSQ.
    Nowadays the only reason to play jobs is for the damage and how it feels to play. That is not sustainable. Every new job is increasingly obsolete. I miss when people mained jobs for their identity within the world.
    This even extends to actions. Capstone actions especially used to have so much identity and that was part of what made them satisfying. Now that so many capstone skills are devoid of meaning, they are far less satisfying.
    And this makes it so that leveling jobs every expansion is an annoyance instead of fun. It used to be fun to do the story incrementally, see the new actions and what they mean. Playing jobs just to experience their story was worth it. I've barely leveled any jobs to 100 despite playing the game every day. It's just not worth it to go through that just to play the jobs how they're meant to be played, when I'm never going to play them. That means that a HUGE portion of the total gameplay in 14 just doesn't exist to me.
    The difference between "I'm an X job who is the hero" vs "I'm the hero who is just playing X job" is a massive difference to how immersed it feels to be in the world.
    Imagine if we got an expansion with non-linear zones, and each job had their own MSQ level of writing story. Everyone travels the world experiencing it differently. You see someone on a different job and wonder why they're at place and what they're doing for their story. Everyone would be chatting with each other, talking about their stories, trying to get their friends to do the job the played next. It would feel both like an MMO and like and RPG again.

    The role quests are a joke, no I mean an actual joke, a spoof, a parody of actual content.
